Chapter Text
Yoongi's eyes scan the room, taking in all the newly graduating college students.
Why was he here?
It's not that Yoongi would be considered old, he was just 25, but he was definitely older. He had a job, maybe that could lead him into an actual career. He had his own place that he was quite proud of.
Yet here he was, at a house party filled with 21 year olds about to embark into the life of adulthood. They really have no idea what's coming to them.
The real truth was Yoongi knew exactly what he was doing here. His best friend's younger brother asked if he'd like to come. And well…Yoongi's never had it in him to tell Jeongguk no.
It'd been a while since he'd seen the omega, both busy with their own lives. But when Jeongguk had called and asked if he'd come, he agreed without thinking.
"It was nice of you to come, Yoongichi," Jin walks to where Yoongi is leaning against the wall and bumps his shoulder against his.
Jin was Yoongi's best friend and Jeongguk's older brother. Yoongi had met Jin in middle school and they'd been stuck together at the hip ever since. And back then, where Jin went Jeongguk followed. Yoongi didn't mind, though. He was a good kid with gigantic eyes. He was cute in a bunny kind of way.
But now Jeongguk was grown, he was an adult. Officially. Yoongi was proud of him, he’d worked hard. Or that’s what Jeongguk had told him, anyway. They’d drifted apart in the past few years due to life; Jeongguk with college and Yoongi with work.
“Hyung!” Yoongi and Seokjin both turn towards the voice. Jeongguk rushes towards them with a blond boy in tow. “I can’t believe you actually came!” He discreetly nudges Jin to the side as he wraps his arms around Yoongi’s neck.
“Of course I came,” Yoongi wraps his arms around Jeongguk’s waist as Jeongguk begins swaying them from side to side before releasing him.
Jeongguk’s scent was stronger now than the last time Yoongi had seen him. A sweet scent of vanilla, enjoying the way it seems to accentuate his own scent of amber. He looks radiant, his smile so wide that his normal big eyes are just little crescents.
“This is Jimin,” Jeongguk pulls his blond friend forward. “This is Yoongi Hyung!”
“I’ve heard a lot about you,” Jimin reaches out his hand with a slight bow of his head. Yoongi takes it, bowing back.
“I practically raised you and this is the thanks I get,” Jin huffs from beside Yoongi, a fake look of anger across his features.
“You’ve already met Jimin,” Jeongguk glares before turning back to Yoongi. “I’m done with school, can you believe it? I thought this day would never come.”
“Hyung is proud of you,” and Yoongi was. He was immensely proud. Jeongguk was practically like his own younger brother.
“Taehyung just got here,” Jimin announces, dragging Jeongguk away as he waves at Yoongi. The vanilla scent lingers though, and Yoongi finds himself wishing it was just a bit stronger…
The next morning, he wakes up and fixes his usual morning coffee, only he adds some vanilla creamer in it this time. The vanilla creamer was actually at his apartment for Jin but finds himself using it anyway. If it’s because it reminds him of a certain omega…well…that’s no one's business.
Yoongi finds his entire day is filled with thoughts of the vanilla scented omega, in a way they’d never been before. He finds himself opening social media more than before, checking the omegas instagram for new posts and looking at his old ones. He finds himself opening his texts with him, unsure of what to say before closing them.
Why had Jeongguk infiltrated all of his thoughts?
The answer comes that night in the form of a dream; Yoongi dreams that he’s in a nest that smells like vanilla with a doe-eyed omega in his arms.
He wakes confused but also with a warm feeling flowing through his veins. He wants to court Jeongguk. But does he want to court Jeongguk just because of his dream or does he actually desire Jeongguk as a chosen mate?
He sits and dwells on it. Dreams can leave a huge impression on one’s psyche. But the more he thinks about it, the more it feels right. As if the dream was his alpha telling him “this is the omega we want. This is the omega we desire.”
And what a perfect omega to have as a mate. Jeongguk was caring, kind, funny…
Yoongi then begins to panic, Jeongguk is all those things. He is, to Yoongi, a perfect omega. What if someone is already courting him? What if it’s someone from his college? What if it’s someone closer to his age that he’d have more in common with? What chance would Yoongi have?
He can feel his alpha getting restless inside of him, can basically hear it growling at the thought of not going after Jeongguk.
The worst Jeongguk could do is reject his courting, but he knows Jeongguk and he knows Jeongguk would do it gently. Courting doesn’t have to be some huge spectacle, it can be something small. Yoongi is just about to pull out a notebook to write down ideas when he sees his walkman sitting on his desk.
A mixtape.
He had plans that night to go out to eat with Jin and Jeongguk so he gets to work quickly, grabbing his favorite cds and a blank cassette. This first gift is going to be a test, an experiment if you will. Nothing too fancy, just a little present for graduating if he needs to mask it that way.
He meticulously picks out the songs, making sure the flow is perfect. But he also goes out of his way to make sure the lyrics and mood of the songs give the message he’s trying to portray. It’s more than just Yoongi’s favorite songs and artists, it’s a love letter exclaiming his intentions. You just have to listen.
Once he’s done, he scribbles To: Jeongguk From: Yoongi on the label and puts it in the blank cassette case. He glances at his walkman still sitting on the desk and grabs it as well. He can buy a new one. But he needs to make sure Jeongguk is able to listen to the mixtape.
By the time he’s done, he only has a few minutes before he needs to leave. He changes quickly and heads out the door, the cassette and walkman in his pocket. He walks into the small restaurant, immediately spotting Jin and Jeongguk who are currently arm wrestling on the table.
“You’re weak old man,” Jeongguk laughs. Jin’s face is bright red as he puts his left hand over his right in an attempt to push Jeongguk’s fist back. Jeongguk just smiles as he releases the rest of his strength, beating Jin as his fist hits the table.
“Good job, Jeongguk,” Yoongi announces himself. Jeongguk looks at him with a bright smile as Jin mutters something under his breath about letting him win.
“Are you going to sit down?” Jin asks as Yoongi stands at the edge of the table.
He’s debating whether to give Jeongguk the mixtape and walkman now or wait until it’s just them without Jin. But…Jin would find out anyway. So he pulls the walkman out of his pocket along with the mixtape and sets them in front of Jeongguk. And without saying a word, he sits down and picks up the menu.
“Hyung? What’s this?” Jeongguk picks up the walkman in one hand and the attached headphones with the other.
“Just a gift,” Yoongi shrugs, daring not to look Jeongguk in the eyes.
“A gift huh…” Jin deadpans from beside him and he can feel Jin’s stare.
“This is too much, hyung. I can’t accept this.”
“Yes you can,” Yoongi says again without lifting his eyes.
“Did you make this for me?” Out of his peripheral vision Yoongi can see Jeongguk lift the tape. Yoongi just nods with a hum, afraid if he opens his mouth he’ll reveal everything. “That’s really sweet of you, hyung. Thank you.”
Yoongi finally looks up as Jeongguk carefully takes the tape and puts it in his jacket pocket and sets the walkman to the side.
An acceptance of the gift. If Jeongguk realizes it or not, he’s accepted a courting gift. Which means he’s accepting Yoongi’s advances. Yoongi feels like a weight has been lifted from his shoulders. He might actually have a chance.
