Chapter Text

Dylan and Jun had never liked each other. They met through mutual friends, Thame, Nano and Pepper and as soon as Jun saw Dylan he smiled—an infuriating smile and Dylan hated him at once. Dylan's mood soured even more when Jun named himself Thame's best friend, Dylan wouldn't say it but he thought that spot was his.

Anytime they met Jun would do his best to annoy Dylan until Dylan was ready to throw hands and their friends would have to pull them off each other. They competed silently in everything, who could walk the fastest, who could hold their liquor more, who knew Thame better, who drove better, who could dance better and Thame or Pepper would do their best to diffuse the situation whole Nano watched them.

So when they met on a deserted road and there were no friends around to stop them, it was bound to end terribly.

The night was gentle, unseen birds kept Dylan company with their song, the hum of the engine, the sussuration in the trees in the valleys on both sides of the road and the soft breeze that brushed his hair and messed with his collar put him at ease. He relished the softness of the night, steering the car with one hand while the other dangled out the window. He had gone on a little evening drive away from the bright lights and noise of Bangkok and it was the most peace he had felt in weeks. And then Jun appeared.

He heard the obnoxious hum of a motorbikes engine and looked to his right, curious as to who else might be on the road with him and even meaning to give them a little nod of acknowledgement, and then through the window on the passenger side Jun rode into view on a motorbike that looked like a lithe black and red monster. He knew it was Jun because the moron wasn't even wearing a helmet and he was smiling at him. Dylan's mood soured instantly, the man couldn't let him enjoy a moment of peace or happiness without showing his annoying face. Dylan hoped he'd crash and die but gave up on such a wish quickly because Jun was so thick skulled he'd probably hurt the road if he hit his head on it, Dylan was fine with letting Jun pull ahead so he could return to tranquility but Jun turned and stuck his tongue out at him and he was incensed. The soft night sounds faded away and there was only the road and his enemy, he sat up and jammed his foot down on the accelerator. Jun's eyes widened when he saw him and he too increased his speed.

They drove at speeds that would get them pulled over in any other setting, they felt the same rush of adrenaline, grinned whenever they were leading and keeping their eyes on each other instead of the road. The wind blew in Nuts face mercilessly and he wore the sunglasses that were dangling from the front of his shirt. Then they turned a corner with Dylan in the lead and were immediately assaulted by truck headlights.

Dylan had no time to think, his muscles acted on their own, he swerved left, right into Jun and together they tumbled down the steep slope. His only coherent thought as they went down the steep slope was "please let him be fine." And he said it over and over in his head in the few seconds that their tumbling lasted so that it the words ran over each other and lost their meaning. Tumble, crash, he heard glass shatter, the air bag exploded into existence and hit him in the face, knocking him back into the headrest and making him see stars for a split second, tumble, he winced as shards of glass embedded themselves deeply in his face and arms, the car flipped over again and he was smacked against the top of the car. "please let Jun be fine" He begged. The car crumpled in on him and he felt a heavy object slam into his chest and knock the wind out of him. And then the tumbling stopped. He dangled upside down, hooked to his seat by his seatbelt and as he stared at the grass outside, unthinking. The pain came to him all at once, he tried to scream but there was no air in his lungs, just blood, he coughed up drops of it and they splattered onto his face. Move! Call an ambulance! Get to Jun! He screamed at himself but his arms were heavy weights dangling on both sides of his head and he could hardly feel anything beyond the pain. He coughed up more blood and brought his arms, scraped and riddled with glass shard cuts, down to unhook the seatbelt. He fell against the roof of his car and his sight went blurry, everytime he moved he could feel the piece of metal rubbing against his insides, digging deeper into his chest and scraping against bone and all he wanted to do was lie there until it was over but Jun was somewhere in the tall grass and it was his fault. He dragged himself out of the car window, stood on shaky legs and spotted Jun lying about a yard away from his bike, unmoving. Dylan's heart hammered against his chest and tears clouded his vision, he stumbled towards him, clutching his wound while he coughed up blood. He fell down halfway there and crawled until he was by Jun's side.

"Jun?" He called. Jun couldn't respond, the side of his head was smashed in against a rock and he could only shiver with the pain. Dylan wanted to touch him, wanted to take the pain and add it to his own so Jun would be okay and return to being an asshole, a living asshole instead of being moments away from death's door. Dylan grabbed Jun's clammy hand and tried to say his name, to beg him to stay alive even though he could see the light fading from his eyes but his lungs were filled with blood and the air he needed to speak was escaping out the wound.

"...my fault." He wheezed. It hurt to breathe, the blood bubbled in his lungs when he tried and then all he got was a mouthful of blood and still no air, he wheezed and clutched at his chest and removed the metal rod, then curled up, shuddering from the sharp pain. The blood poured more freely now but he still couldn't breathe.

Jun squeezed his hand and smiled at him but it wasn't his signature smile, it was pained and small as he almost couldn't move his face. Dylan turned away and tried to call for help but he couldn't speak. He clawed at the ground and squeezed the life out of Jun's hand as he cried and a tear escaped Jun's eye that wasn't smashed against a rock. The blood gushed from his chest to join the halo of blood that was slowly forming around Jun's head to make a wide pool around them. Eventually his limbs gave out and he dropped completely beside Jun and stared up at the stars with him as he choked on his blood and coughed it up and their bodies went cold.
