“Hurry up, Rainbow Dash!! We’re gonna be late!!” Scootaloo raced forward up the hill, leaving her not-sister-sister behind. Her eyes scanned the grounds further out, relieved to see that the competition hadn’t started.
“Calm down, squirt. We got plenty of time,” Rainbow Dash responded, hiking up beside her.
“But what about the planning for the events? And seeing the other teams? And stake outs?”
Rainbow sighed and continued walking. “The events haven’t changed in 20 years; the teams are most likely the EXACT same as last year; and as much as I love a good stake out, there’s no need.” The blue girl slung an arm around her buddy as they passed the Sisterhood Social banner. “We got this in the bag. Plus, you’re trying a new leg,” she pointed to her friend's prosthetic leg under the track shorts. “Take it easy.”
Scootaloo flushed, and scanned the crowd until her eyes landed on a pair by the food table. “But what about Applejack and Apple Bloom? We both know that almost nothing can stop them…”
Rainbow’s eyes dashed up to where she was looking and immediately regretted it. Her best friend, Applejack, was leaning on a pop-up table, tossing an apple in one hand, looking as cool as ever. Her blonde hair was in a low ponytail, draped over her shoulder. Her emerald eyes held intensity, but her grin was kind and polite.
Rainbow Dash looked away sheepishly, like she was worried about being caught.
Which was stupid, cause AJ is a friend and that’s it.
The voice in her head was reasonable but it didn’t stop her mind from forming a billion different images where her friend was more than that.
Maybe if you got the courage to ask her out, that could happen?
Are you insane?? Don’t do that.
Why not?
What if she says no? What if she laughs? What if she hates me? What if—
You sound like Twilight.
Shut up, brain.
“RAINBOW DASH! Are you even listening??”
The blue girl blushed slightly and played it off. “Er, uh, yeah! Totally! Got it!” So cool.
Scootaloo sighed and dragged her towards the crowd, mumbling something about “stupid crushes”.

“RAINBOW DASH!! SCOOTALOO!! OVER HERE!!” Apple Bloom shouted, waving her hand wildly. A couple of the other teams glared in her direction but she didn’t notice, considering the two younger teens were excitedly talking back and forth.
“We are so gonna destroy you—“
“Like hay ya are—“
“Oh, yeah?”
“Yeah! Applejack an’ Ah can absolutely—“
“In your dreams!”
Applejack stepped closer to her friend and chuckled. “Ya remember when we were like that?”
Rainbow’s mind flashed to when they were in school together and would constantly smack talk each other on the playground. She laughed at the memory and responded: “Remember? We’re still like that!”
The two girls laughed, when the megaphone crackled and Granny Smith’s shrill voice hushed the crowd.
“It’s this thing on? Hellooooooo?? Huh? …Oh, yeah. Thank ya, Big Mac.” She cleared her throat. “Hello, kids and teens! Welcome to the annual Sisterhood Social! Y’all know this is the 50th Social? Ah remember when Ah was just a lil’ kid…”
Applejack sighed and whispered, “Ah knew she’d do this. Quite a storyteller, that one.”
Rainbow grinned at her friend’s discomfort then said, “at least her stories are interesting. It would suck if they were the boring mumbo-jumbo old people say.”
The blonde cracked up again, her smile widening. Rainbow always took it as a win when she could make her laugh. Something about her expression makes the blue girl brighten up inside, and—
“Anyhow, where was Ah? Ooh, yes! Considering that this is the 50th annual Sisterhood Social, we’ve decided to switch up the rules a little! You can pick anyone in the crowd to do the competitions with, a sister OR a best friend!”
The crowd erupted into chaos as the people all chose who they wanted to team up with. Apple Bloom and Scootaloo gasped and grabbed each others’ hand screaming, “WE’RE A TEAM!”
“Well, there goes our option of working with our sisters,” Applejack sighed and followed her sister with her eyes.
Now’s your chance, Rainbow.
She leaned onto the table, closer to her friend and said, “we don’t need their help, anyways. And, you know, we could team up and destroy them?” She left the ending like a question, waiting for an answer.
Luckily it was an ear-to-ear grin and her saying, “you betcha barrel we will.”

“AND THE WINNERS OF THE RACE ARE APPLEJACK AND RAINBOW DASH!!” The announcer yelled into the crowd. He leaned in and added, “by a looooooong shot.”
The two girls smirked as they looked back, realizing they left everyone in the dust. It took over 3 minutes, and six other teams, for Scootaloo and Apple Bloom to finish. When they made it past the line, both girls were hunched over and gasping for air.
“How—did—y’all—DO THAT?!” Apple Bloom yelled, gesturing to the older teens who were casually standing, not tired at all.
“Yeah, we saw you two totally blast through that race! It was epic!” the other girl added, stars dancing in her eyes. “You two are so good together!”
She gave Rainbow a knowing glance. She glared back.
Applejack laughed again and ruffled her sister’s hair, not noticing. “Well, sugarcube, when ya have as much friendship experience as Rainbow and Ah do, it comes easy.” The blonde winked in her direction.
Rainbow Dash blushed but covered it up with a smile. “I guess we make a pretty good team, don’t we?”
“Sure do.”
