Summary:
May 2026 Drabble Challenge
Day 2: Demon
Alberta didn't mean to become friends with her would-be murderer's mother.
Notes:
Hello all! Welcome back to my May 2026 Drabble Challenge attempt! The theme this year is "Alternate Universes" and although the only rule is that you have to use the word prompts in the fics, I decided to lean into the theme and create an AU of my own to set these in! It's a Modern Day/Living AU, although all of the ghosts have had near-death experiences similar to how they died in canon.
I wrote six of these in advance, and I don't know if it's the subject matter or the terseness required in writing a drabble or both but they all have a really sad, dark tone. I hope they get a little lighter as the series goes on.
Work Text:
The wealthy hostess was mortified when Alberta collapsed at her party. She monitored her recovery, at first for insurance’s sake but soon out of friendship. But Henrietta agreed with the doctors: “It was a heart attack, Bertie. You need to lose weight.”
She didn’t tell Henrietta about the poisonous look her son gave her. No one would believe Tommy Woodstone had spiked her drink. Could she accuse Henrietta of raising him poorly?
Alberta returned what she owed after Henrietta’s own crisis. She walked in on Tommy weeping over Henrietta’s hospital bed, and she learned that even demons grieve their mothers.
