How About a Movie?

Summary:

Maya struggles with many things. Many, many things. Sometimes she resorts to rather unconventional methods of coping, and her boyfriend, Megumi Fushiguro, tries his best to help her when times get tough.

Notes:

TW: Graphic depictions of self-harm, suicidal ideation, and self-hatred. Do not read if this may put you at any risk mentally or physically.

As of right now, I have no new work to share. I'm still filing through old works and deciding what I want to keep, share, rework, etc. and in order to (hopefully) get myself back into writing new stories, I want to share my older stuff as well. However, with that being said, be warned that the older the writing is, the worse it will be.

This was originally written in June of 2022, so nearly four years ago now, and I haven't rewritten it whatsoever. I wrote all of these words down in a notebook in the middle of my 8th grade science class (ugh... I remember this specific piece so well...) and they have changed VERY minimally since then. The only alterations have been a change of name for the main character I came up with and the correction of some grammatical errors I found while deciding whether or not I would post this. What does all of this rambling mean, you may ask?

It's simple. This story is horrible, in my opinion, four years later. Brace yourself.

Work Text:

Maya sat in her room, resting on her bed as tears rolled down her cheeks. Her hands were shaking, itching for her blade. She knew she shouldn’t- and she had promised she wouldn’t. But, she had underestimated how hard it would be to keep such a promise.

She stood, giving in to the enticing urges. Maya walked over to her desk and pulled the drawer open, grabbing out a small, silver blade. She pulled her sleeve up and brought the blade to her skin, drawing her arm back as she felt her skin tear. She smiled as she watched the red pop, dripping down her arm. She led another stroke down her wrist and continued to repeat the action.

Maya could hear the voices whispering to her.

“It can’t hurt to go deeper, Maya.”

“You know you deserve it, Maya.”

“What if you just... let it kill you, Maya?”

Maya’s smile faded as she realized she had accidentally gone deeper. She could feel the blood running down her arm. She knew she needed to stop, but she couldn’t find it in herself to drop the blade, no matter what she did.

Just as she was about to add another cut, she heard the door to her room open as Megumi Fushiguro walked in. His eyes widened when he saw Maya’s arm. He ran over to her and grabbed her hand, pulling the blade away from her and setting it on her desk. He pulled her hands apart and slowly moved closer to wrap his arms around Maya’s waist.

“Maya... come on, love. We’re going to go to the bathroom and clean these, okay?” Megumi kept his voice calm and reassuring, even though he felt anything but.

Maya nodded and they started walking to the bathroom, Megumi keeping their hands conjoined the whole way- the blood running onto his hands being the least of his worries. Megumi lifted Maya onto the counter and turned the sink on. He grabbed a washcloth and ran it under the faucet, the water warm, before bringing the now-wet cloth to Maya’s wrist. Megumi held her hand in place as she tried to pull away, the pain and shame too much. Megumi could hear Maya’s sobs as he continued to clean the cuts.

“I know it hurts, love, but we need to make sure you won’t get an infection,” he informed, looking up into her eyes, worry filling his own. Maya nodded.”Can you tell me what triggered you to do this again?”

Maya shook her head, not wanting to talk about it. Megumi sighed and held her face in his hands. He contemplated pushing the subject but decided that wasn’t the best move at the moment. He reached into one of the drawers connected to the sink and pulled out a roll of white bandages, beginning to wrap them around the gaping wounds. When Megumi had finished, he pulled Maya into his arms and carried her out of her dorm, grabbing both of their phones on the way, and took her to his dorm.

He set Maya on his bed and locked his dorm before walking over to his mini fridge and grabbing a few snacks. He walked over to his closet and grabbed a tee-shirt and basketball shorts for Maya to wear. He tossed them next to her and headed into the bathroom. “Go ahead and get changed. I’ll be in here if you need me at all.” He quickly went to the bathroom, not wanting to leave her alone for too long, while also knowing she’d want a few minutes to have some space. He brushed his teeth and hurried to make sure anything sharp was hidden before leaving the bathroom.

He walked out of the bathroom to find Maya already dressed and curled up in his bed. He could hear her crying as he walked over to her and laid down next to her, wrapping his arms around the girl and pulling her closer. “Do you want to watch a movie and eat snacks?”

“I guess... but I know you’re going to make me talk to you at some point anyway. Can we just get it over with now?” Maya was pleading at this point, dreading the upcoming conversation.

Megumi nodded and sat both of them up, propped against his bed frame with Maya’s legs wrapped around his waist as she rested in Megumi’s lap. “Let’s start with why you did it. What happened, Maya?”

She sighed as she looked at the worry displayed across Megumi’s face. “I dunno, really. My thoughts just... got away from me, y’know?” That was her reply, more of a question than anything. “I tried to stop myself, I really did. I promise. It just seemed like the only thing that would help.”

Megumi nodded and pulled her tighter against his body. “Why didn’t you find or call me? I need you to let me help you, Maya,” Megumi told her, his voice full of reassurance.

“I didn’t want to bother you. I’m already annoying enough as it is,” she admitted, averting her eyes and cowering away from Megumi as she tried to hide herself.

Megumi angled Maya’s head so she was looking up at him before speaking. “Maya, you are not annoying. I need you to come to me, no matter what. I’m going to help you, but I need you to work with me here,” Megumi declared, looking down at Maya before laying back down, letting her rest on his chest. “Now, what movie do we want to watch?”
