I’ll Believe In Anything

Summary:

The night Oikawa left for Brazil felt unreal, maybe if he closed his eyes hard enough he'd wake up and discover it was all just a bad dream. He wasn't actually leaving to become a pro-volleyball player. That's what he wanted to do but he also wanted this to just be a moment where he takes a peak into the future.

But no. It was real. This wasn't just some preview into his future. This was something happening right now.

Tomorrow he has to leave his family.

His home.

His Iwaizumi.

Chapter Text

The night Oikawa left for Brazil felt unreal, maybe if he closed his eyes hard enough he'd wake up and discover it was all just a bad dream. He wasn't actually leaving to become a pro-volleyball player. That's what he wanted to do but he also wanted this to just be a moment where he takes a peak into the future.

But no. It was real. This wasn't just some preview into his future. This was something happening right now.

Tomorrow he has to leave his family.

His home.

His Iwaizumi.

That thought makes it hard to swallow, his chest aches and his heart burns with desire.

It's selfish but he would ask Iwa to come with him. He knows his best friend can't follow him to Brazil but some part of him feels like it could work.

It had to work. They've been best friends since childhood. He's never known his life without Iwa.

They're walking home from the gym. Oikawa wanted to pretend they were still in high school practicing late for a game.

"It's getting late and you have a plane to catch." Iwaizumi said.

Oikawa smiled, "Eager to get rid of me already?"

"Yeah, something like that."

They walk side by side while their arms occasionally brush against each other.

Iwa was almost like a magnet, Oikawa always seemed to gravitate towards him. They were in sync all the time and it made him wonder how he would be able to live without Iwaizumi by his side.

“You okay?” Iwa’s voice was so soft that Oikawa almost missed the question.

“Yeah. Just making a list of things I have to pack.” He lied.

Iwa knew he was lying but for right now both of them refused to acknowledge the truth.

The walk remained quiet until they arrived at Oikawas place.

Iwa bit the inside of his cheek, “Do you need help with packing?”

Oikawa nodded before smiling, “Awe that’s so sweet of you!”

Iwa frowned, “Shut up. Let's just get you packed and ready to go.”

Iwa followed him inside the house, he’d follow him anywhere but he knew he couldn’t go with him. He planned on going to school here in Japan. As much as he loved volleyball it was really just something he used to bond with his best friend.

They both sat their things down on the floor before taking a seat on the bed. Oikawa's room seemed empty, everything was put away and organized. It was really happening, Oikawa is leaving tomorrow. The silence between them wasn't uncomfortable, it was a reminder that they wouldn’t be able to be in each other's presence like this anymore.

“What’s going to happen to us?” Oikawa blurted out.

Iwa froze before gathering enough courage to look over at him, “What do you mean?”

Oikawa didn't look at Iwa, his eyes remained focused on the floor, “Will we still be friends?”

Something hit the back of Oikawa's head, it didn't hurt but it was enough to look over at Iwa who was frowning at him with a raised hand, “What was that for!” Oikawa asked as he rubbed the back of his head.

“You idiot! What do you mean what will happen to us? We remain friends obviously. You act like we will never be able to talk again. I’m just a text and call away. Facetime exists. We can still communicate.”

Silence fell between them. Iwa began to stand up from the bed, “I’ll be right back.”

Iwa felt something warm wrap around his wrist, it wasn’t a rough grip but it was grounding. It was firm and desperate. He turned around and looked at Oikawa who was still looking down at the ground. Iwaizumi shifted so he was in between the boy's legs. Oikawa released his grip from Iwa's wrist.

“Toru.” Iwaizumi said softly.

Oikawa leaded his head forward to rest on Iwa's stomach, “Don’t go.” He choked out.

“I was just-” Iwa was cut off by a quiet sob. Iwa lifted his hand and held the back of Oikawa's head. The gesture was soft and slow. Oikawa's hair felt delicate against Iwa's palm, it felt familiar. It felt right. Feeling bold, Iwa began to thread his fingers through the boy's hair.

“I’m not the one leaving.” Iwaizumi whispered.

Oikawa remained quiet as Iwa carefully and slowly knelt down so he was at eye level with the brunette.

He lifted his head up enough, allowing Iwa to see his eyes brimming with tears. Iwa was so close that their noses almost brushed together, “Come with.” Oikawa pleaded.

Iwa tried to swallow the lump in his throat, “You know I can’t do that.”

Oikawa blinked, allowing his tears to fall from his eyes. Almost like it was muscle memory, Iwa lifted his hands up to cup his face. His touch was firm and grounding. It felt like home, a place he would have to leave behind tomorrow.

Iwa’s breath smelled like mint and Oikawa imagined what would happen if he got a taste. He hesitated just for a second. He wanted to capture his lips before they were out of reach. Oikawa leaned in just a little bit but before he could register what he was doing Iwa already met him halfway.

The kiss was sweet and yet it was desperate. It was gentle but also rough. They never kissed anyone before, especially not each other. Oikawa didn’t know why he kissed Iwaizumi. No one kisses their best friend on the lips. This kiss wasn’t platonic, it wasn’t even romantic. It was a cry for help. It was a plea to make Iwaizumi come with him.

And if that made Oikawa selfish - that's fine. He hopes Iwaizumi remembers how nice their first kiss felt. The amount of emotion and desperation poured into one kiss. A kiss that will never slip from their minds. No matter how many girls they would kiss, it wouldn’t be the same. It wouldn’t feel as warm and loving.

Years of hiding feelings from each other poured out the last night they would be together until- no one knows when they will see each other again.

Once they finally pulled away from each other, Oikawa had the strength to look at Iwa, “What are we?”

Iwa blinked a few times, “Best friends.”

“But-”

“I should go.” Iwaizumi said as he grabbed his bag.

Oikawa didn’t say anything.

Iwaizumi didn’t look back.

The next day Oikawa was at the airport getting ready to board.

There was no sign of Iwaizumi.

Notes:

I haven't written a fic in like seven months but I'm in a bad writing slump and cannot write my book that I'm trying to finish by the end of the year so I decided maybe posting on ao3 will give me motivation.
