Chapter Text
Could hear a pin drop after the words out of James Potters mouth.
“I don’t think I want to be with you anymore. Don’t get me wrong, I love you Reg. But,I think I love her more.”
Her being Lily Evans. Of course her, the one that James would follow around like a stupid puppy. Or should we say deer.
Regulus was speechless. He sat there opening and closing his mouth. Trying to find any words to come out of his mouth.
In the end, all Regulus could do was stand out of his chair so fast that it landed on the hard resturant floor. He picked up the glass of red wine that he was nursing and simply, just left out the door. Fronting James with the bill plus paying for the glass and damage to the chair.
Regulus grabbed his phone and dialed his big brother.
“ Siri, can you come get me?” Reg said with the smallest voice. Almost so quiet as if he took up too much room then he would break down.
“Aren’t you out with Prongs? Why can’t he drive you home? I am out with Mary. I also am 6 beers in. Not risking it étoile sorry.” Sirius slurred over speaker phone.
“I can’t even look at Potter right now. It’s okay really. I will just haul a cabbie or walk home. Thank you for picking up the phone.” Pulling the phone away from his ear about to hang up. Sirius stopped him in his tracks.
“ Remus is home, didn’t want to be a third wheel. I’ll give him a call. Share your location with him. He owes me a favour.”
Remus had just reciently moved in with the brothers after moving into the city to be closer to his job. Sirius says Remus owes him a favour every time he needs something. At this point it should be the opposite. But Regulus wasn’t going to question Sirius after this awful night.
As Regulus sent his location he started walking further away from the resturant to make sure that he wouldn’t have the chance to see James.
Regulus can hear the rust bucket of a car before he sees it. The grey car that had started to rust in random places pulled up just has he started to hear yelling down the road.
“Hey! wait up!”, James shouted as he was jogging down the street. Reg tried to cross the street to avoid him. But with the traffic it was difficult. Luckily he had a moment and took it. Regulus sprinted towards Remus but he was not fast enough.
“Hey! Why are you running away? I still want to be in your life Reg. I told you I still love you. Do you not care about me?” James said as he grabbed a hold of his shoulder. At this point he was so close to breaking. Regulus started shaking like a leaf.
“Please. Let go of me. You can’t ask me that when you are the one leaving James.” Reg said trying to build up a wall that James had broke down fully with three years of being together. With his back still turned to James, Regulus tried to get out of his grip.
James was holding firm, to the point where it was going to leave a bruise in the shape of his hand. James has always been gentle with Reg. I guess that was before when they were together. As Reg was about to cry out in pain the sound of a car door slamming made him more alert.
“What you think you’re doing Jamie? You’re hurting him!” Remus spoke fast but loud. Kind of in a stance, like he was squaring James up.
“He’s crazy Moony! Stole the glass of wine, and broke a chair. Stormed out of the resturant. The drama queen he is. All I did was break up with him. Now he is acting like I am nothing to him. What else am I supposed to do?” James was getting defensive. He started talking with his hands, which he did when he tried to get people to not pay attention to what he was saying. Usually to avoid getting in trouble.
Luckily Remus wasn’t a distracted type of guy.
“You did what!?” Remus yelled, His jaw was on the floor.
With the bit of distraction Regulus moved away from Potters grasp. Slowly making himself further towards Remus’ passenger door.
“Thats what I was thinking, truly unbelievable. Lily would never act like that in public.” James stammered on as if the question wasn’t directed on to him.
Remus still has his jaw on the floor when he let out a disbelief laugh.
“No, Reg did nothing wrong. You are luckily he didn’t break that chair by smashing you over the head. Also what the fuck does Lily have to do with any of this?”
Regulus was shocked to say the least as Remus defended him instead of his friend. Remus also started to back up away from James, as if putting himself as a human shield infront of the younger boy.
James got a furrow in his brow. He was starting to get even more mad showing more red in the face that wasn’t from the cold.
“I didn’t deserve to pick up after that scene he made. I also don’t need to feel bad. I stand by taking the chance to finally be with Lily. She is my soulmate Rem. You wouldn’t understand, Am I sorry for hurting Regulus? Yes! But he doesn’t need to act this way. We can still be in each others lives.”
Regulus felt like he was a ghost as his heart sunk to the floor and shattered into even more pieces. Regulus had held strong for the whole time. But the moment he herd those words his whole world tipped off its axis. He couldn’t hear anything anymore. Felt like he was drowning on his tears that started to pour.
Without being able to see properly he felt two hands on him. Lifting Reg off the round and setting him in the car. Not having a fight left in him, Regulus just let it happen. Could hear muffled yelling and a slight ring in his ears.
He just let it all out and cried.
Three years to waste, Three years of memories with James and even with Lily, now tainted. How could they do something like this and tell Reg they still care about him. He hiccuped and curled into a ball not even caring if he puts the seat belt on. Remus a couple minutes later gets into the driver side. Doesn’t start the car, just sits there flexing his now slightly bruised second and third knunckle . As time passed Regulus hiccups became less. Just leaving slight sniffles in its place.
Remus broke the silence, “It’s going to be okay Reg. I know it doesn’t feel that way now. But one day it will get better.”
Reg just stayed silent. Remus moved across the seat and grabbed a hold of Regulus seat belt and clicked it into place. Put the car on and started towards home.
