Dog Of War

Summary:

What happens when life trips you up and gives you a whole alter ego to maintain? You cope, complaining all the while about the change in your schedule.

In other words, I made a self insert that’s so self that’s inserted into this story that it’s not even funny. My beta readers all had one of two reactions, “he’s so you?!” and “I have ADHD, good luck getting me to read anything.”

Hey, also, yell at me in the comments if I haven’t finished a story/fic and you want to read more of it.

Chapter 1: Prologue + Chapter One

Summary:

I dislike the disconnect between chapters that happens bc Ao3 doesn’t know what a prologue is, so here’s the first chapter too.

Notes:

What uuupppp I have like four hours of sleep and no food at all in me. Enjoy the inserted self.

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

Half lidded eyes, shielded by a visor, scanned the streets below. The creature scratched at its muzzle, mild irritation tingeing its actions.

It heard shuffling behind it, and it turned to see a policeman behind. The policeman cleared his throat, and said “um, excuse me… Hound? But you can’t be up here… sorry….”

The Hound tilted its head, then cracked its neck. The policeman swallowed, then stood aside as the Hound strode past him.

As the Hound walked towards the door, the policeman worked up his courage to say “Sir… or ma’am?”

The Hound stopped.

“Uh, us at the station just want to say… we don’t really know what you’re doing here… but you don’t seem to be malicious, so we think that… we, uh, we…”

The Hound watched silently, eyes barely visible through the visor.

“…never mind. Carry on,” the policeman said hoarsely.

The Hound spun on his heel and kept walking to the door.

Chapter One

Jacob grumbled at the sound of his song alarm, rolling over and burying his face in his blanket. He nuzzled deeper into the fake fur, a light floaty feeling enveloping him. The song kept playing, keeping him from falling fully asleep.

Then reality hit him.

Jacob groaned, not bothering to open his eyes as he reached for his phone. He peeled his eyes open and blinked away the eye gunk as he unlocked his phone. He checked his work schedule, noticing that he was on call but that no one had booked him.

Looks like I have a bit of a free day to go out today…

He set his phone down and rubbed at his eyes.

The pollen, though… even if I wanted to go out and get some sun, the allergies would make it unbearable for me.

I’ve got to mask up.

Jacob took his allergy medicine, filled his water bottle, and pulled his industrial strength face mask over his head. He blinked rapidly, feeling the irritation accumulate even as he stood in his own home, and he sighed.

Do I have any… goggles? Would sunglasses work?

He rubbed at his eyes again and turned to face his boxes of storage.

Oh!

Jacob sat up, holding an old ski visor he bought from a street market.

Didn’t I want to make this into a cosplay? Well, it’s a good thing I didn’t mutilate it.

He readjusted his mask and settled the visor over his eyes. He blinked a few times, satisfied.

Ooo, I think this’ll work!

Jacob stood up and stretched, pleased with his find. He meandered over to the sink to wash off the residual pollen from his eyes, then he pulled on his trench coat and grabbed his messenger bag and water bottle.

Woof, okay, it’s time to go…
