Work Text:
“It’s just a few more weeks,” your big sister says. “We’ll be living together before you know it!”
You let out a sigh. Despite your sister’s advice not to, you’ve been counting down the days until you move in with her ever since you graduated college. You thought that it would help make the days go by faster, but it’s only done the opposite. Thinking about how many days left until you get to see your sister in person again makes you sick to your stomach. “I don’t know if I can wait that long…” You mumble out. “I don’t want to go another day without you next to me…”
“I know, sweetie, I know.” She gives you a soft smile that gets distorted by the poor Wi-Fi at your parents’ house. Video calling was a lot more feasible when you were still on campus and not out in the middle of nowhere, but these nightly calls had been part of your routine for so long that it felt impossible to stop. “It’s been hard for me too.”
“It has?” you ask.
“Yeah?” She gives you a surprised look. “Of course it’s been hard for me, you dork. It’s almost as if I’m in love with you or something!” she says sarcastically.
“I know you are!” You pout at your sister’s teasing. “I just… I don’t know, I thought you were pretty good with dealing with this sort of thing.”
“What gave you that impression? You know how I get about you.”
You think back to the last time the two of you were together, and how your sister wouldn’t stop clinging to you all throughout the dinner the two of you had with your parents to celebrate your graduation. “Yeah, that’s true.”
“Just a few more weeks…” she says again. You’re not sure if she’s trying to reassure you or herself.
“Yeah…” A momentary silence lets you hear your mom calling your name from downstairs, presumably letting you know that dinner is ready.
“Is that Mom?”
“Yeah. I probably should go down…”
“Alright,” your sister says somberly. “Gosh, I can’t wait to be the one having dinner with you every night…”
“Me too.” You hear your mom calling your name again.
“Should probably go get dinner,” she suggests.
“I don’t see you trying to end the call,” you say smugly.
“Fine. I’m gonna go get started on my own dinner, then. Wanna talk some more later?”
You nod your head enthusiastically.
“Sounds good.” She smiles at you. “I’m going now, okay? Love you, Sis.”
Your heart skips a beat hearing those words from her. “I love you too.”
