Chapter 1: complete idiotry

Chapter Text

Rex had been wandering around the teen team base the entire day. Why was it still called “teen team” if they we’re all basically adults, that was aside the point. The city had been a bit too quiet; the base was quiet too. Rex wasn’t sure if anyone even was here today, maybe they’ve all left to go to a Rex free party? Maybe his team-mates had gone tired of sitting around in the tower doing absolutely nothing?

Calling Mark was usually on the bottom of Rex’s list of “who to call in case of lonely-ness” Eve had told Rex that she was going on a study date with Amber, so Rex didn’t really want to disturb her. Rex could call Amanda but then Rudy would also show up and Rex didn’t want to hang out with a super smart kid version of himself. It made him feel weird and icky, reminded him of his own wonderful childhood. Mark, Zandale and Rae were the ones that were left. Rex didn’t really know Zandale enough to want to hang out with him one on one, Rex and Rae we’re good friends yeah. But it had become awkward after she decided that superhero life wasn’t for her. Rex felt a bit bad for declining her offering that he could come along so he wanted to wait a bit before hanging out with her again. Mark was left. Rex’s thumb hesitated above the ‘call’ button. Until he pressed down.

Ring.

Ring.

Mark picked up.

“Rex why are you calling me it’s like 2 in the morning” Rex could hear Marks sigh in the end of the sentence. Oh. Wait it was 2 in the morning. That’s why it everything seemed quiet. Rex put his hand on his head sighing as the realisation train came flying in, he was too deep in now, no backing out. “Uhm I was uh calling to ask you if you wanted to…watch the stars with me? Maybe even count them?” Rex’s insides were panicking. Why did he ask to count stars? Why didn’t he just say like anything else?

“…” Rex could hear mark sigh in the background.

“Mark?”

“Yeah sure Rex, but I’m not sure it’s possible to see any stars in the sky when you’re in the middle of the city. You do know that light pollution is a thing?” Mark paused “right?”

“Well DUH! I was obviously thinking you could fly us too somewhere less polluted”

“Sure, I’ll come over and ‘count the stars’ with you”

“Meet me on top of the teen-team tower?” Mark made a humming noise in response and hung up the phone.

Rex stood still in the middle of the base, again panicking on the inside. Rex snapped out of his “ohmygoddidireallydothat” state of mind and ran to his room to fix his hair a bit. He didn’t bother to put it in a bun, instead letting it stay loose. The world could wait for a few hours. He still wore the pants to his suit, since they look very good on him. Rex also changed t-shirts to a clean white one without pizza stains on it.

He also grabbed a few batons for just in case. Bringing some special ones along too.

Rex had sprinted up the stairs to the top of the teen-team base. Rex did get some minutes to look at the sky, and Mark was right. Rex could count maybe 6 stars in the sky and let out a small hum. A shadow casted over Rex, it was mark. He wasn’t wearing his superhero suit, and he had his hair slicked back with a few strands sticking out. If Rex was gay, he would definitely be swooning all over him. Marks taste in fashion wasn’t anything special, he just looked like any other college student that worked out (which let’s be real, almost all college age boys were fit or worked out, not that rex was looking or anything).

“Well as you said there’s not a lot of stars here” Rex said, working hard to not stutter in embarrassment. Mark hummed in agreement “yeah, not a lot to see here.” He said as he turned away from Rex to look up at the sky. Rex also turned his sight towards the sky.

Rex found himself begin carried by Mark high up in the air Thank whatever god that Rex wasn’t scared of heights. Rex could see some slight mountains tops in the distance; Mark was probably bringing Rex to a mountain somewhere in the middle of nowhere.

Hm. This was somehow very romantic. Even if neither of them were speaking.

Rex was right, Mark was bringing them to a mountain in the middle of nowhere. Rex looked up towards the sky and gave an affirmative hum “sure are a lot more stars out here” Mark nodded “well not really, there are the same number of stars here as in the city, but there’s just less light here.”

“Yeah, because I already knew that” rex scoffed.

Mark and Rex just stood in silence looking up at the star painted sky.

“Why did you call me?” Mark asked, his voice almost seeming careful.

“Well, I was originally thinking of calling Eve, but then I remembered that she had gone on a date with Amber, and while I was looking for anyone to call I was thinking that it was the middle of the day and I wouldn’t want to disrupt Eve’s study date with Amber. I could’ve hung out with Amanda, but Rudy is stuck to her like a magnet. And I REALLY don’t want to hang out with a young version of me. It really creeps me out. I don’t really know Zandale enough to hang out with him one on one. You were the last one on my list”

Mark nodded in response.

“I might’ve overcomplicated it a bit” Rex chuckled awkwardly as he looked up at the stars in the sky.

“The sky sure is beautiful out here, it feels like I’m seeing all stars that has like ever existed out in space”

Mark looked over at Rex. His tan face illuminated by the moon, making the freckles on his face apparent. Mark sat down on the rocky ground beneath them.

Rex laid down next to Mark, their shoulders touching.

Mark was pointing at something in the sky, Rex was too distracted with his own thoughts to listen to whatever he had to say. It was probably something like “I once visited that planet” or something along those lines.

Those said thoughts Rex was distracted with was the warm gooey feeling that was brewing inside of his stomach. The same kind of feeling that he had gotten during the time he and Eve were a thing.

Was he gay?

Better question, was Mark gay?

Rex finally sat up and reached his hands into the sky stretching

“Just looking at the stars is getting boring, want to see something cooler?” Rex said while smirking.

Mark sat up and looked in Rex’s direction. Rex’s hand was slowly inching towards one of his batons. He took one and held it firmly in his hand before the baton started glowing and making a slight sizzling noise. Rex threw it high up in the air.

The baton exploded multiple time in the air like fireworks. Each explosion a different colour.

Mark looked up in the sky, he had his usual neutral slight smile face. Rex saw something more in his eyes then his usual happy face. Maybe they were more sparkly? Maybe it was the colours reflecting from the sky?

Maybe the difference was that Rex really really wanted to kiss Mark.

Mark turned over to look at Rex and Rex quickly looked away while tucking a piece of his hair behind his ear. Rex felt his face heating up, he was lucky it was dark outside. He’d be fucked if it was daytime.

Mark gently grabbed Rex’s cheek and turned him towards himself. Mark also seemed to be blushing, still wearing his slight smile on his face his dark eyes shining from the small amount of light coming from the moon and stars. His eyes seemed soft and welcoming.

“Mark…” Rex whispered

“Rex” Mark answered.

Rex inched closed to Marks face, closing his eyes. Rex put his hand on Marks back while Marks hand held Rex’s cheek firmly before pressing their lips together.

Mark pressed his tongue onto Rex’s lips asking for consent to enter his mouth.

Rex allowed Marks tongue to enter, it was warm and soft. Rex allowed Mark to explore his mouth.

Rex was sure he was going to faint from oxygen loss, Rex let out a half assed whine. Mark could probably make out for a week straight with his viltrumite lungs.

Which was kind of hot. But not optimal in this situation.

Rex tapped Marks back to try to signalise to him that he needed to breathe. Mark didn’t pull back, Rex god desperate and decided to try to push him off instead. Mark finally realised and he let Rex go.

Rex took one of the biggest breaths he had probably ever taken. The air felt like finding a 100-dollar bill on the street.

“How did you not kill Amber or Eve?” Rex chuckled. Mark scratched the back of his head while looking away apologetically. Rex quickly put his hands on Marks shoulders and made him look him in the eyes. Marks cute doe eyes seemed filled with guilt.

“Hey, Mark no need to feel guilty. I’ve survived a gunshot to my head I’m almost certain I could survive a few minutes without oxygen”

Rex pulled Mark into a hug, before pulling away slightly to kiss him again, even softer this time. Rex made sure to force Mark to let him take a few breaks to breathe. Rex wished he had viltrumite level lung capacity too.

Mark started toying with the hem of Rex’s shirt, Rex quickly pulled away from the kiss and grabbed Marks hand.

“I know I’m hot and that you want to grace your eyes upon my beautiful sixpack, but don’t you think it’s a bit…I don’t know? Open? Here? We’re on top of a mountain and it’s quite cold here” Rex shrugged with Marks hand in his.

“We could go back to the Teen team base?” Mark suggested. Rex nodded happily, he felt like a kindergartener receiving a bag of candy, or however that felt. Rex had never experienced that, and he had never experienced what he was hoping would happen later either.
