Chapter Text
They sat there in the dark, Cherri leaning into Apo’s chest, listening to the knight's steady heartbeat and feeling the warmth of their body seeping into her.
“Apo?”
“Yes, my lady?”
“What’s that song you hum to yourself sometimes when you think no one is listening?”
“O-Oh. I didn’t know you heard that.” Her heartbeat sped up a bit, but it was still steady as ever.
“Of course I did. You have a pretty voice.”
“I- uh- if you say so, my lady.” Apo’s heartbeat jumped, Cherri giggled.
“Yeah, I do. Anyway, what’s the song?”
“It’s one of the only memories I still have from before the castle. I don’t know who taught the song to me, but I think it might have been someone important.”
“Oh, I see.” Cherri was silent for a moment, not having expected such an answer. “I’ve never heard you hum the full thing, just bits and pieces. Do you remember the whole song?”
“Most of it, yes.”
“If it’s okay for me to ask… how does it go?”
Apo was quiet for a moment before responding. “It goes like this.” She began to hum softly, lingering on each note with the reverence of something treasured. The sound produced formed an old lullaby that Cherri recognized as being from a different kingdom than Soluna, but she didn’t know the words to either. The melody was soft and comforting, and Cherri felt her eyelids beginning to droop. As she began to nod off against Apo’s chest, the knight finished her song. Cherri felt soft lips press against her forehead as the blanket was drawn up around her. “Sleep well, my beloved lady.”
