Chapter Text
“Hey Sprout, pass me the flour.” Cosmo held out his hand. Sprout obliged, taking the flour in his hand and passing the bag to his friend.
“Here ya go.” He smiled. His smile was always bright and kind. No wonder Cosmo felt safe around him. His best friend. Everything was going great in Gardenview, more visitors than usual, and the two toons had to prepare more cookies and sweets for the kids. It was nice. They got to chat and bake. Sometimes Sprout had to go do his main toon stuff, Cosmo didn't mind. Sprout was a main toon. He couldn't change that. He was happy for his friend. He laughed, remembering a funny memory from a while back.
“What's so funny?” Sprout tilted his head, confused. He put the bowl down where he was previously mixing some egg with melted butter.
Cosmo giggled. “I just remembered that time you got flour all over you!” He shook as he laughed. He burst out laughing loudly. Sprout rolled his eyes, but a soft smile crossed his features.
“Yeah well I remember that time you forgot to take the cake out of the oven, and just as you were about to take it out..” Sprout held in his laughter at the memory. “It exploded in your face!”
“C'mon, it was partially your fault, too.” Cosmo scoffed, his laughter still going strong. Sprout grinned down at the shorter toon.
“Yeah yeah whatever.” Sprout wiped a tear from his eye. “Let's finish this batch up m’kay?”
“Mhm.” They both worked vigorously, more children meant more work, and more work meant more time with Cosmo. It was nice to talk to someone who understood him so well. No other toon understood Sprout as much as Cosmo did. They were best friends, after all. He whisked the ingredients together. Today, they were making cookies with cute little decorations on them. The first batch was a complete failure the last time they tried. They had to resort back to their normal cookies, but this time, it would work. He knew it.
“So Cosmo.” Sprout glanced over to Cosmo. “What decorations are you plannin’?” Sprout asked curiously. Cosmos face turned to one of proud glory.
“So!” He started, and Sprout knew he wouldn't shut up about it until they started decorating. Maybe he should've waited a bit longer until he asked. “I had these ideas from a dream…” Sprout snorted.
“A dream? You're one funny guy.” Sprout gave a playful grin to Cosmo.
“Hey, I'm serious!” Cosmo puffed out his cheeks, irritated. “It's my best idea yet.”
“Okay, fine. Go on.”
Cosmo smiled. “So, as I was saying before I was rudely interrupted.” He eyed Sprout with a glare and soon after his giddy smile returned. “I got the idea from a dream, and I thought of the design once I woke up! I forgot the dream slightly but I'm sure it was something like–”
Sprout coughed loudly. “Cookie design?”
“Oh right, sorry. We could do the main toons symbols! For you it'd be a strawberry, Astro a nightcap, or moon, I'm not entirely sure of that, Shelly a fossil, Vee.. a TV? Pebble, I guess a bone or pebble, maybe a bone. The event main toons won't be included until those events. What do you think? I have a few other ideas but this is one of the most creative I have.” Cosmo smiled.
Sprout hummed, thinking about Cosmo’s idea. “That sounds.. good.” He nodded, nudging into Cosmo playfully.
“Moon for Astro, it'll be easier to draw with the icing.” He grinned, finishing up his whisking and bringing the bowl closer to Cosmo. “Is it measured yet?”
“Yep.” Cosmo replied, pouring in the measured flour and baking soda from the measuring jug to the mixing bowl.
“You didn't forget an ingredient did you?” Sprout teased.
“Of course not.” Cosmo huffed. “It's only two ingredients after all.”
“Of course.” Sprout smiled. “Let's move to the next batch while this sets.” Cosmo just nodded, he smiled up at Sprout. He grabbed more equipment from the cabinets below and brought them to the counter, already cracking a few eggs. Sprout brought the already heated up butter and measured it inside another jug, pouring it into the bowl so that Cosmo could stir it together.
“Hey Sprout?” Cosmo said.
“What's up?”
Cosmo turned to his friend, he had a small, relaxed smile on his face. “Thank you.” Sprout turned to look at Cosmo, his brow raised.
“What?” Sprout blinked, his eyes were filled with confusion. Cosmo burst out into laughter.
“For everything.” He smiled, wiping a tear from his eye. “Even when you mess the cookies up.” Sprout immediately looked down to the mess of icing on the counter.
“Sugar!” He screeched. He headed to the sink for a towel, swerving his way around the counters and Cosmo to reach his stop.
“You mean icing.” Cosmo winked playfully. Sprout scoffed, he took the towel and wet it, rushing back immediately to clean the mess up. Cosmo watched as Sprout cleaned the counter vigorously.
“Let's just.. get this finished.” Sprout said, throwing a smile at Cosmo. Cosmo smiled back, he went over to the edge of the counter where their friendship bracelets were intertwined together. He picked them both up, gleaming down at them.
“Cosmo!” Sprout screamed. “Do you smell smoke?!”
Cosmo raised his head in concern, dropping the bracelets on to the counter abruptly. “The oven Sprout! The oven!!” Cosmo leapt to turn the oven off while Sprout fetched the fire extinguisher.
When Sprout came back he stared at Cosmo. His shoulders shook as if he was trying to hold in a laugh. “Hah. Hahaha!” Sprout suddenly abrupted into laughter.
“Sprout, this is no time to laugh.” Cosmo, covered in smoke from head to toe, hadn't realised his state. Sprouts giggles grew louder and louder until he was somehow even redder than his own skin.
Sprout pointed at Cosmos face with a giggle. “Your, your, your face!” He choked out, his words came to Cosmo and he looked around for a mirror. He found a hand mirror, probably left by Glisten. He took it and stared at his face with a frown, then an even deeper frown.
Cosmo marched to the sink and splashed water on his face. He grabbed the towel and wiped his face with it. Sprouts laugh quietened into small, occasional snorts. Cosmo felt mad, but he knew that he would cherish this moment as long as he could. Forever.
