Work Text:

Six heard the blare of their alarm clock going off and stirs around before turning it off. She groans as tiredness begged her to go back to bed. She reluctantly opened her eyes staring into the ceiling before grabbing her phone only to see its dead. Did I not charge it last night? She thought in frustration before sighing and slow sitting up her hair falling from her bun she fell asleep in. She put her phone to charge before reluctantly getting up sitting on the edge of her bed.

She thought about last night and how Two seemed to be doing so much better last night. They smiled thinking about making Two breakfast hopefully keeping them happy. Nine would be happy at the slight progress they’ve made. Six got up stretching before exhaling contentedly and heading to the bathroom to brush her teeth. Six grabbed their toothbrush putting toothpaste on it before brushing. Their mind started to wonder while doing this. ‘Maybe I should get a part time job along my main job? They did cut my pay and I need all the money I can get..’

She hummed in dissatisfaction ‘I’ll make pancakes for breakfast.. I know it’ll take a bit but Two deserves it after everything..’ Six soon finished brushing their teeth and started redoing her bun. Carefully putting the hair back together, trying not to pull any hairs. After she finished she looked at the mirror and gave herself a small reassuring smile. She went into her room switching into her work uniform so she didn’t have to change later before exiting her room. They headed towards the kitchen and opened one of the cabinet taking out pancake mix.

She would make it homemade but she still has work and probably wouldn’t have time. As she poured water into the pancake mix and started to stir. Once perfect she poured it into the pan but not before adding butter to the pan. She watched it cooked before looking out the window. It was still really early not even the sun had properly came out. Now thinking about it they doubted Two would even be up. Maybe they should check? They are a deep sleeper of course. They turned the stove to low heat before hurriedly going to Nine’s bedroom door. They gently and quietly opened the door it making a slight squeak.

Their heart sank when seeing no one inside. Six calmed themself trying to reassure that nothing happened. They looked around the room, under the bed, in the closet and stupidly under the desk too. They got more hasty and desperate the more they couldn’t find them. They ran out of the room calling out Two’s name all while trying to keep composure that was struggling to stay. “Two?! Two come out this isn’t funny!” Six knew last night felt too nice to be true. ‘They seemed okay but now I can’t find them.. what if they did something bad to themself?! ‘“I need to call the police..” Six mumbled to themself.

She ran back into her room grabbing her phone it turned on and the first thing she was greeted with, was a text from Two. She calmed down smiling nervously. “Maybe it’ll all be okay.. Two sent a text about going on a walk or something and everything will surely be okay.” Six tried reassuring herself that admittedly only made her more nervous. She opened the text and

“I’m sorry. I’m sorry that I was no help and just rot in Nine’s room. This is my goodbye. Thank you for all that time you spent trying to take care of me, whether it was due to feeling obligated to or just genuinely caring thank you so much. I’ll be joining Nine now. Please don’t mourn or grief I’ll be exactly where I want to be. Goodbye Six.”

Six fell onto her knees and just sat in the silence of her room. Her breathing became unsteady as it turned rapid just to return normal. She stared at nothing and everything. It didn’t take a genius to figure out what Two had done. She squeezed her fist tightly turning her knuckles white. She felt so much again. Guilt for not being able to save Two and Nine all while feeling angry at herself. She scanned the text one more time really taking it in again. She felt dizzy, sick even. She felt helpless. This reminded her of when she first found out of Nine’s death.

They didn’t know how to feel at the time. They wanted to be sad that she couldn’t help, angry at the fact she missed all the signs. Guilt for being rude to Nine.. They threw away their feelings though as Two seemed in worse condition compared to Six. Their feelings didn’t matter at the moment they needed to comfort Two. So they sucked in up. Six suddenly felt like the room was too suffocating. They looked out the window seeing a slight blue hue peeking through. Dark yet bright enough to see.

Six stared at her phone before dialing 911. “911, what’s the location of the emergency?” Six didn’t think she’d be calling again so soon. She gently inhaled as if to comfort herself. “I-.. I’m pretty sure my friend killed themself.. I’m not sure where but they left me a message saying so..” Six explained her voice was low and uneasy. She didn’t know how to react she felt honestly a bit numb now. “Do you know where your friend could possibly be?” Six bit her lip unsure before something popping in her mind. “No.. I do have an idea..” she paused before talking again. “Their partner died near a bridge and I suspect that they went to the bridge as well..”

Six never expected to be right but while on the phone call she went into the driveway dread filled her as she saw Two’s car gone. She got into her call making it near the bridge. She saw Two’s car park nearby she parked nearby before getting out. She looked over at Two’s car, it looked empty. Her worst fears came to light as she saw traffic was stopped and the bridge was being closed off. She saw them receiving a body from down below it was already covered with sheets but it was obvious who it was. Six watched as she gripped onto her phone harder. She didn’t know whether to run towards them and ask to see Two one last time or to stay right where she was.

God Nine would never forgive her for letting Two down.. days blurred as she surprisingly got a paid week off to mourn her losses. Eventually the funeral came by. There sat Six up front staring at the Two’s closed casket. She didn’t cry, scream, grow angry or anything. She just looked numb maybe even a bit hint of confusion. Eight walk towards Six who was absolutely zoned out. “Hey Six.. how you holding up..?” His trying to be warm despite losing his best friend. Six exhaled a breath she didn’t know she was even holding. “I-.. they seemed okay, what went wrong..?” Six whispered loud enough for only Eight to hear.

Eight sat down next to Six placing a hand on her shoulder. Something in Six broke but she didn’t cry still “I took care of them I was there for the nights they hurt themself or cried and needed a shoulder to cry on..” Six turns towards Eight “Did I fail them.. ? I mean did I fail Nine and Two..?” Six voice shook a bit as she held onto her own wrist. “It wasn’t. You did everything you could. Two..” Eight paused blinking some tears away. “Two was just unable to continue.. but just because Two wasn’t able to please, please don’t follow the same path those two went down.” Six turned back towards the casket. “It wasn’t your fault. It will never be your fault. You did so much to help Two recover. It’s not your fault please remember that.”

Eight gave Six a tight hug and Six hugged back uncharacteristically clinging a bit longer. Eight moved back before giving Six a reassuring smile “If you’re ever struggling please tell one of us we’ll gladly be there for you.” Eight got up giving one pat to Six’s shoulder “Be safe see you at the burial.” Six nodded and watched as Eight went to comfort a crying Seven. She was surprised Eight wasn’t crying and grieving the loss of his literal best friend, but instead comforting the others first. Eight had every right to cry but yet he didn’t. Six faced forward again before staring back at the casket.

Eight words were supposed to be comforting but Six still felt terrible for not being there enough. She sighed putting her head low and thought about how everything could’ve probably been fine if she had just noticed something. It’s horrible knowing two people died due to suicide under the same exact roof as you. Knowing you failed both of them. Six huffed before gripping tight again at her wrist. Soon the burial was happening. Being escorted there for the second time wasn’t what Six thought would happen any time soon. Once there it had started raining as cliche as that is. Two did get their dream to be buried with their love one.

Six observed the others, some cried others stared sadly at the casket being lowered. Six kept to herself silently moving away from the rest. After Two was officially buried some of them went towards Six and offered their condolences. She just wanted to be alone for a second, she felt exhausted. Eventually people started to slowly leave and soon there were only Eight and Six left. Six kept staring at the two tombstones that now sat next to each other. Eight approached Six standing right next to them before some tears fell down Eight’s face. “I’m going to miss them..”

Six looked at the crying Eight. It was rare to see him cry out of all people. He always seemed to be very composed and calm but seeing him cry made Six realize how much is happening. Eight wiped away his tears before giving Six one more hug “Be safe. If you’re struggling call me or someone, please.” Six nodded and Eight took that as their cue to leave. As Eight left Six glanced back at the two graves before deciding its late enough. She should start heading home too. “Goodbye you two..” Six muttered before walking towards her car. She knew they couldn’t hear her words obviously but a part of her wishes they did.

The car ride home was silent with the only sound being the rain tapping against the windshield. Once she got home she opened the front door and stepped in. It felt more darker than usual.. She walked slowly through the house to get to her room. Each framed photo felt like a mockery of her failure as she got to her bedroom door she suddenly felt too aware of how close Nine’s room is to hers. She left it open in a rush and never bothered to close it but now she wish she did. She hurried into her room slamming the door way more than she liked. She got out of her soaked clothes and decided to take a shower. The shower was quick but well needed.

As they got out they caught their reflection in the mirror. They had way more noticeable eye bags, a look of stress that seemed to always linger and a part of them feeling missing. She huffed angrily before rushing out of the bathroom to change. She got into her pjs and for the first time in a while didn’t put her hair into a bun before sleeping instead letting it down she checked her phone, 9:45pm. She put her phone down before collapsing on her bed getting under her covers. She stared into the ceiling thinking about everything that just occurred before shutting her eyes.

She woke up in panic as Nine and Two scream and wailed at her. “How coooulddd you let uuusss die..???” Two screamed trying to claw at Six before being dragged away with a cry. “It shouldveeee been yoouuu…” Nine whispered with clear venom in their voice. “It’s alllll your faulttt…” Two voice told somewhere. Six covered her ears like a scared child crying slightly. She huddled herself into a corner trying to desperately muffle the noise of Nine and Two screaming and crying. “I’m sorry! I tried im so sorry! Please just leave me alone!” Six cried out pushing her hand harder against her ears.

That apology didn’t satisfy the two ghost as they kept yelling and wailing becoming louder per the second. Six just wanted to disappear go somewhere far away from what’s happening right now. She felt more tears fall “I deserve this..” she mumbled to herself wishing everything could go back to normal. Everyone being alive and happy again. What a childish thought though. What happened, happened. There’s no going back. There’s no fixing everything. The two of them are gone, permanently. There is no hope or happy ending sometimes.

Six sobbed knowing this is her fate forever. To be tortured for all eternity for failing her friend twice and failing her friend’s partner. But she did deserve this all. Right?

Six shot upwards heart rapidly racing as she tried to catch her breath. She felt sweat run down her body as body shook. She bit down on her lip causing it to bleed by how hard she bit down. ‘That was all fake?! It felt so real’ Six angrily yelled out before bursting into tears. Everything finally hit her, and it hit hard. She kept trying to wipe away the tears but more just kept falling “stupid dream..” Six quietly cried out gripping onto her bed sheets, all the anger melting into despair as she started to sob to herself. She felt dumb for crying over a dream, hopeless for not being able to be there for the two she just loss they were right there and she still managed to fucked up.

“I want to go home..”
