Wings of an Angel Carry the Suffering of Men

Summary:

How does a guardian angel fly?

Flight is achieved by their wings. Each feather on an angel's wings represents their bound's suffering.

Sharpness is a guardian angel. He hasn't gotten his bound yet despite waiting and moving into one up the ranks of guardian angels. His whole world was about to be rocked because of a specific purple rabbit hybrid.

Chapter 1: Strange Beginnings

Chapter Text

Sharpness is a guardian angel and he’s been told one day he’d find the person who’s suffering was turned into his wings. At the current moment, Sharpness was training Saparata—Saps for short— a fellow angel in combat. The less experienced male attempted to throw a punch at the sword master who easily dodged it and knocked the weaker down.

“Strike for a weak point next time.” The blond said while offering the other a hand to get up, to which Saparata accepted.

“Hard to when your opponent happens to be the literal model fighter!” The silver haired male’s frustration was understandable as those who are less experienced than the sword master lose with or without weapons.

Saparata felt a pull on his wings and turned to the blond.

“Guess my bound requires my assistance."

“Let’s hope it’s not combat related.”

“HEY! Shar—” The younger couldn’t react in time before being teleported to his bound.

Sharpness chuckled to himself while gathering the sparring equipment. He felt his cat materialize between his legs, so dissipating the equipment into the clouds, he picked up his cat and started the walk to his house.

He locked his cat since she’d never leave him alone cause Sharpness was the one feeding her, but he liked to believe it was because she loved him. Despite being a guardian angel, Sharpness doesn’t have a bound. A bound is the person a guardian angel is meant to watch over.

For years now, Sharpness has been alone as everyone around him has either gotten a bound or is still in training. Even the other trainers have bounds, he’s the only trainer without a bound. He’s not jealous of the others for being bound, he was jealous because they wouldn’t ever experience the perpetual loneliness he’d been dealing with constantly.

Entering his house, he took off his sparring boots and let his cat jump down from his arms to wander. The silence in the house was deafening to the blond as the sound of blades crashing and taunts filled his ears typically. A numbing pain took hold of Sharpness’ senses, a pain unlike any injury sustained from combat. Feeling the dizziness that is typically accompanied with blood loss, the angel traced his hands around his body searching for an open bleeding wound, but realised there wasn’t an active wound on his body. He leaned against the wall and slid down to the ground. It hurts despite the advanced healing factor angels have.

Moments after Sharpness felt the pain settle in, the surroundings changed causing the angel to summon his weapon and move into a fighting stance. Across the angel was a man with rabbit features, purple hair, and a laxed posture. The rabbit didn’t seem to be surprised by the angel’s sudden appearance, almost as if this was planned. He walked over to the angel, pushed the blade away without being cut by it. This revelation didn’t assuage the angel’s nerves.

“So, you’re my guardian angel? Didn’t expect you to turn out a fighter. Although this makes it a whole lot more interesting.” The tone of the rabbit’s voice was very calm, almost expecting.

One question ran through Sharpness’ head, ‘how was he summoned?’. For a guardian angel getting a bound for the first time, it’s a calm feeling not the pain inducing nightmare Sharpness felt before being pulled down.

A sense of unfamiliarity ran through the angel, typically he never had a situation with a bound unless it was a vow breach.

A vow breach is when a skilled fighter goes down a guardian angel and their bound to cut off the vow. The reason why a fighter is sent down is because the bound might get aggressive when the vow is broken. After the breach is finished the vow broken angel is sent back to training and prepares for the next bound they might get.

During the blond’s silence, the indigo haired male stepped closer.

“Name’s Jude. What’s your, angel?” It wasn’t a malicious tone, not like Sharpness could tell. He’s only ever been around people who’re direct with their motives since an angel’s work relies on direct command from the higher ups.

Since the angel didn’t respond, Jude took it as a challenge to make the blond speak. He hooked his index finger under Sharpness’ chin then began to turn it left and right simply examining the condition the angel was in. Sharpness’ wings tucked back before the angel moved out of Jude’s touch. Using this moment to gather his thoughts, the angel decided to ask a few questions.

“How do you know about guardian angels? And how the fuck did you summon me?” He needed answers. The questions kept running through his head. All that did was elicit a laugh from the rabbit.

“Name first, I’ll answer your questions after. I thought guardian angels were supposed to obey their bound’s orders?” Sharpness was reluctant to give his name to Jude, but if it meant he would get the answer to his question

“Sharpness. That is my name.” A hum came from the rabbit.

“Interesting name. Original or changed?”

“What the fuck does that have to do with this situation?”

“Just wondering, so answer if you want your questions answered.”

“I changed it. Now tell me how you knew about guardian angels and how you summoned me.”

Jude stepped back from Sharpness and moved toward the table in the room. There were a few books on the table, the rabbit picked one up.

“Found a book on angels. Thought it’d be interesting and entertaining. I wasn’t wrong.”

“A book. A fucking book. Great.” It wasn’t the answer Sharpness expected, but it was one that didn’t please him. The angel thought maybe he’d get someone to spend time with as a guardian angel and fulfill his purpose, but no it was just some random rabbit hybrid who found a book.

“Is that not how guardian angels are normally summoned?” Jude didn’t know what to do since he didn’t think the summon would work originally. He was intrigued by the angel and wanted to know more, so naturally asking about the angel’s state would make logical sense.

“You really don’t know anything.” The angel let his wings take a relaxed position, then gestured to the rabbit. “Assuming you want the whole explanation and I’m stuck down here now. You’ll need a seat.”

Jude sat down on the ground and motioned the angel to do the same. Sharpness did the same.

“Why were you so guarded when you first appeared?”

“I was in my house when waves of pain hit me. The pain I’m supposing came from the unnatural summon you did.” An apologetic expression appeared on the rabbit’s face.

“Sorry for that. Why’s your name Sharpness?”

“I don’t associate myself with my original name. Also you can just call me Sharp for short.” He started to mess with a few feathers on his wings. It was an idle habit he’s had since he was a child. In a way it was healthy for his wings too as it kept them preened with how often he messed with them.

“Not to be rude or offensive, but is it for gender identity reasons?”

“Not directly. I’m not transgender. It’s just that my original name is associated with people I rather not see again.” Jude took that as the sign to stop questioning about it and instead moved onto the next time he was interested in.

“Where do you reside? Like angels are stereotyped to live in heaven or in the clouds.” Sharpness smiled at the question. It was like a child's innocence and curiosity.

“The Aether. It’s beyond just beyond the mortal clouds.”

“Interesting. Does th—”

Someone entering the room halted the conversation. Jude got up and went to greet the person. Sharpness simply got up and leaned against the wall to see who it was. The rabbit saw it was his roommate, Parker, and greeted him.

“How’s it going, Parker?”

“It’s going. How about you?”

“Wonderful actually.” Parker looked past Jude’s shoulder to see the books still on their dining table.

“Still hooked on the concept of guardian angels?” An awkward chuckle was pulled from the rabbit.

“Yeah, it was too interesting not to be interested.”

“The things you do. Just clean up the table before dinner.”

Sharpness walked over to where Jude was to see this Parker person. The rabbit saw it and was shocked when Parker didn’t see Sharpness.

The enderman walked out of the dining room and left to his room. As soon as he left, the rabbit turned and looked at Sharpness.

“How did he not see you?”

“Only the bound can see the angel unless ordered by the bound to be visible to all.”

“Why is it like that?”

“Because my job here is to protect and serve you.” The angel flicked the rabbit’s ear which caused the ear to twitch.

“HEY!” Sharpness laughed. The rabbit blushed, embarrassed by the angel’s teasing actions.

“Cute.” That comment just increased the opacity of the blush on the rabbit’s cheeks, this time dusting the cheeks with a deep rosy color.

A grey calico cat materialized next to Sharpness. She jumped onto the table and sat there watching the two. The angel reached over and gave the calico a few pets on the head. Jude just took a moment to process the situation, it was a lot. He went from being teased to a cat appearing in his dining room.

“What the fuck?” There was genuine confusion in his tone and expression. The blush was abating.

“That’s my cat.”

“That cat just appeared.”

“She’s dead and chose to be with me for the rest of eternity.”

“It’s a calico.”

“Typically only females can be calico.”

“How come?” Sharpness smiled. He loved cats to a good degree, but not the same degree as another one of his friends does. It was still love nonetheless.

“The calico gene is only the X chromosome and it requires two X chromosomes.” Jude nods along since he didn’t know that.

“Can I pet her?”

“She doesn't bite.” The rabbit reached out and traced his hand down the cat’s back, the same way Sharpness had. She let him pet her, it was like a professional stance she held.

“What’s her name?”

“Lux.” Jude looked at Sharpness with a bewildered expression.

“What type of name is Lux?” The angel shrugged.

“Didn’t name her, my friend did.” The rabbit spoke, nearly interrupting the angel’s speech.

“Whoever your friend is shouldn’t be allowed to name kids.” A small chuckle was elicited from the angel because of the rabbit’s quip.

“All our names are strange. His name’s Saps.” Even more confusion sat on Jude’s face.

“Your name is Sharpness, his name is Saps? What’s next a vegetable?" Sharpness couldn’t help, but laugh at the rabbit’s reactions.

“His name’s Lettuce.” Silence. Jude was just dumbfounded because how could angels have such ridiculous names. All the angels he learned about in school had typical names like Gabriel or Raphael. Actually thinking about, angel names are strange because what type of name is Azrael, Barachiel, and Metatron? The angel just watched Jude’s expression, Lux getting bored jumped off the table and started to explore the place. She somehow slipped into Parker’s room, snapping Jude out of his thoughts.

The enderman left his room holding a cat by the scruff of the neck. He didn’t look amused with Jude about this new guest.

“What is the deal with this? You know our landlord has a pet policy.” Jude was quick to defend himself.

“It’s not mine, I swear.” Parker simply sighs and lets the cat down. Lux hissed at him and jumped back onto the table staring at Sharpness, but to Parker the cat was staring at a wall.

“Just get rid of it before the landlord finds out.” The rabbit nods and the enderman leaves for his room once again.

The angel was just as amused as before. Lux meowed at Sharpness as if asking for food. Jude glared at the angel as he fed Lux.

“You’re rewarding her behavior?!”

“I was supposed to feed her before you summoned me, bunny.”

“Rabbit not a bunny and secondly you can leave. I had my question answered about the summoning thing.”

“Darling, I can’t leave until the reason you summoned me has been completed. It seems like you’re lying to me about something. The summon knows what you truly want.” A sense of dread ran through Jude. That wasn’t in the book then again so many things that weren’t stated in the book happened. What did he truly want? He was doing this out of curiosity, if it didn’t work he’d just return all the books, but it did work wasn’t that his desire?

The angel noticed how Jude went back into his mind causing the silence in the room to become unbearable. Lux air pawed toward Sharpness which the angel took as the sign the kitty wanted to be sent back to their house. With a mumbled prayer, he sent her back to their house. Ghost pets can materialize to their owners, but can’t go back to the home due to some weird rule according to the Aether. As the time passed by, Sharpness tapped Jude’s shoulder as the rabbit had been lost in thought for a while.

“Bunny, I’m going to assume you don’t know the reason. I’ll be summoned here again whenever that desire comes back into your mind. Have a good night and don’t overthink everything.” Sharpness’ wings moved into a tucked position and the angel’s form disappeared just like how Lux had disappeared.

Once Sharpness materialized in his house, the blond shrugged off all the thoughts and emotions that occurred. Something about that rabbit reminded him of himself. It was a minor trait, but it was still a trait Sharpness had nonetheless. Sharpness didn’t know what truly wanted from life, he was told to train and prepare for being a vow breach angel, guardian angel, and trainer. He had been told and directed to what he was supposed to be, but it only ended up with him being alone and spending most of training others.

Those thoughts get annoying considering he should be grateful for being in a better position than other angels. He walked into the kitchen to pour some food in Lux’s bowl and fill her water before heading to bed. When he did lie down on his bed, a warm feeling passed through him, the rabbit was thinking about him. Guardian angels can get a warm feeling when their bound thinks about them in a positive light or just thinks about them obsessively which most see as bad. For someone who’s been alone for so long, Sharpness doesn’t mind it. He drifts into a dark, dreamless sleep. Although his bound had other plans.
