“Yah!”
Pin kicked the ancient door with minimal force. The planks didn’t seem to budge one bit.
“Doesn’t that hurt-?” Coiny asked, stepping in front of Pin and giving the door a light shove. The moment his hands made contact, the whole thing made a rumbling sound and crumbled into a pile of ash at their feet.
“Hah! Weakened the door for you! And no.” Pin rushed inside what was probably their hundredth abandoned building in Yoyle City that they had broken into today.
She sniffled and picked up a random piece of debris from the ground, while beckoning Coiny.
They had only moved to Yoyle City a few days ago. Nearly every good spot around their friends in the city had already been taken; nearly every other building was simply a skeleton with no innards. It was like they were purposely burned from the inside out, preserving only the outside to foster the illusion of containing something interesting.
“Hm. This one doesn’t seem good either.” Pin concluded. She was probably right; this bottom floor was depressing.
Coiny sighed, “Let’s just go back to the swingset-”
“Awww, I would agree if I was me a day ago.. I think I agree with you! The swings are not that great to sleep on.”
The pale pushpin threw aside the small brick she’d picked up on the way in and made her way out with Coiny, kicking some dust aside as they left the doorframe.
“HEY!”
Coiny and Pin whizzed their heads to the side.
Golf Ball was approaching them with a scowl on her face. Behind her was Tennis Ball, as usual, looking like the concerned little brother about to watch his mom beat up his sibling.
“Give me your attention!” Golf Ball huffed, standing her ground and lifting her chin at Coiny and Pin.
“No one could miss you, BOSSY. You’re practically the biggest thing around. BLEH!!” Pin retorted.
“GRAH!”
“How could you possibly have found us? Pin and I specifically came to the edge of town to destroy stuff!” Coiny whined.
“Guilty as charged!” Golf Ball grunted, “I knew you were up to no good! Quit destroying the precious architecture this instant!”
“This architecture is worse than the spaghetti towers I made in grade school.” Pin snapped.
“Can’t you guys just live in Yellow Face’s custom-made cubicles?” Tennis Ball offered.
“You actually like those?” Coiny deadpanned.
“Well, it feels good to be recognized by a businessman like Yellow Face! He even knew one of my top 27 favorite shapes and said he’d include a model of one inside of my puny cubicle! Tennis Ball grinned.
“That’s lame.” Pin frowned.
“IT DOESN’T MATTER!! Come back to where we are so I can keep an eye on you!” Golf Ball ordered.
“What do I owe to you, Bozo?!” Pin scowled.
Golf Ball scooted an inch away from Pin’s face. “I made your limbs. You owe one of your five senses to me.”
“NO I DON’T! GRR-!” Pin growled, pulling her arm back in an attempt to wind up for a punch but failing miserably midway as her arm wobbled and fell to her side.
She sighed, “Hhhhh, still getting used to it.”
Coiny compensated for her epic fail and swiftly shoved Golf Ball over as she was about to make another snarky remark, sending her rolling into Tennis Ball and throwing them both away like a bowling ball hitting the pins in a bowling alley.
He grabbed Pin’s hand and made a sprint for it in a random direction. They both laughed maniacally as Golf Ball cursed them with unintelligible words from a distance.
“Haha! Good one, Coiny! Just.. W-Woah! Be careful-!!”
They slowed to a halt after a few seconds, Pin’s legs giving out on her just as they stopped completely. She knelt and rolled over.
“Oh, I’m sorry, Pin.. That was too fast. Your legs are still pretty weak, huh?”
“This is why I prefer rolling, Coiny.. So much more convenient!”
“We can roll together, eh?”
“No, it’s okay.. I need to practice walking.” Pin insisted, despite her face being flushed with effort after such a quick sprint.
“Be honest, buddy, can you run again?” Coiny chuckled.
“Yes, absolutely-!” Pin got to her feet, as wobbly as a boat situated in the middle of a hurricane, before taking one step forward and flopping onto her face again.
“Owww…”
Coiny smirked. “Well, I can carry you!” He scooped Pin up into his arms and held her above his head, making a few big strides with a cocky grin, his eyes shut.
Then he ran into a wall. Pin’s point made contact with the brittle building first and pierced right through.
Coiny’s face flushed in embarrassment. Pin wiggled her arms and legs, “Get me outa here!!”
Coiny grabbed Pin yet again and pulled so hard you could hear the cartoon stretching sound effect. After a moment, he pulled her out, and they both fell to the floor.
In succession, the crack Pin had made in the wall of the random abandoned building spread like fire on a wall of leaves across the dusty surface, the whole thing crumbling down and burying both of them in a few seconds or less, crushing them instantly.
The next moment, Coiny was peeking out from the slot of the HPRC, being greeted by the cheeky smile of Gelatin as he woke up from the coma of death.
“Oh, hey, Coiny!” Gelatin grabbed Coiny and set him aside on his feet. “If you’re dead, that must mean...!” Gelatin proceeded to type out Pin’s name on the panel, and with a quick crank, they were back!
“Ugh, what happened...?” Pin groaned
“I thought you guys might’ve died, since I haven’t seen you in a while! Rocky, tell them how much you missed them!” Gelatin grinned and held Rocky up to Coiny and Pin, who got on their feet and backed away immediately out of fear of being barfed on.
“Oh! Wow. The audacity. Party poopers, am I right, Rocky?” Gelatin scolded, shaking his head in disappointment.
Rocky made a little “MHM!”
Gelatin’s eyes bulged out as he spotted someone in the distance. Turning around, it looked like it was Fries.
“Whoop! Gotta go! Fries is looking for me! Have a goodnight, you two!!”
Gelatin skipped away with Rocky in his arms to a couple of people in the distance simply basking in the moonlight. Coiny could vaguely make out outlines of Nickel and Bomby.
The next moment, Fries was next to them and panting for air.
“That little freak has been periodically stealing my fries throughout the night so I can’t sleep! We should put him in a cage just like Firey-!”
And off he went again. Pin and Coiny shared an amused look. Then, they noticed it was nighttime now; they had been dead for half of the day!
Coiny sighed. “Well, wanna go back to the swingset, Pin?
“...No, I don’t want to! It’s uncomfortable..”
“Well, where do you wanna go then?”
“This sucks, Coiny! We can’t find anywhere to stay; Yoyle City is such a dump!” Pin crossed her arms and pouted as they left the vicinity of the HPRC.
“I dunno, seems like nobody else has a great place to stay either. It’s either you sleep on the ground outside under the stars, or in a big tower. Also under the stars. Wanna join those guys over there?” Coiny pointed in the direction Gelatin had gone.
Pin grimaced and sat down in a patch of grass, lying on her back and spreading her arms and legs out in a biiiig stretch, like she was preparing to make a snow angel.
“Right here is fine..” Pin concluded.
Coiny sat down next to her and looked up. The goikan skyline was filled with the biggest stars ever, as usual. Every night here was basically a full moon, too.
Coiny stole a glance at Pin, who was also staring at the sky. He looked away and couldn’t resist a warm smile spreading across his face.
Then he remembered that he killed both of them… And that they didn’t accomplish their goal of finding somewhere cozy to stay. Coiny had suggested going to Pin’s own home back in the plains at some point, but Pin still complained about being around their friends, which Coiny couldn’t argue against.
Although BFDIA was fun, Coiny was glad it was over. Personally, he had a fantastic time, but he didn’t know about Pin. Pin had gotten the hard end of the stick from everyone for a while in the season, and ended up getting out because of him in the end. She never held it against him, though, which he was grateful for.
“Pin?” Coiny muttered.
“Yeah, Coiny?” Pin sat up the tiniest bit.
“We’ll find somewhere nice tomorrow, okay?” Coiny smiled.
“...You pinky promise?” Pin grinned, holding out her hand.
Coiny obliged and hooked his pinky around hers, giving a firm shake.
“Haha, nothing beats a pinky promise!” Coiny laughed.
“Yeah, because it’s like, totally unbreakable!” Pin giggled.
Their hands parted, and they went back to stirring in silence for a few minutes. Coiny plucked at the purple grass beneath himself that he hadn’t quite gotten used to yet. The air smelled of a chill nightly breeze and the bitter tang of yoyleberries.
“Coiny?” Pin beckoned.
“Yeahm??” Coiny called back.
“Do I owe Golf Ball for my limbs?” Pin asked.
Coiny rubbed his chin thoughtfully for a second or so. The straightforward answer was.. Yes? Golf Ball wasn’t the kindest person, so she’d absolutely hold something nice she did for you over your head until you did something for her, like admit “Golf Ball is the smartest spherical sports ball there is. And also the smartest in general.”
Pin’s tone of voice seemed unusually soft, like there was an underlying sadness in asking her question.
“Wwwhat do you mean?” Coiny scooted closer to her. Pin stretched yet again and turned onto her side, facing Coiny.
“Oh, I dunno.. You remember what Golf Ball said earlier?”
“What? That we’re denser than osmium? And a marvel of object evolution because of how doomed we are in life?” Coiny recited with a straight face.
Pin smiled softly, “You got all that from what she was yelling at us after you pushed her…? That was awesome, by the way.”
“Thanks, heheh!” Coiny pumped his fist.
“What I mean, though.. I kind of feel guilty about my limbs, even though I shouldn’t.” Pin murmured.
Coiny’s eyebrows shot up at that. He pursed his lips and set his hand on Pin’s arm. “Why is that? Is it because of what Golf Ball said about you.. Owing her? That’s baloney, and we both know it.”
Pin’s expression remained troubled. “Yeah, maybe a little.. But it got me thinking about my limbs and how I just.. Can’t use them correctly!”
“Hey, hey now. Don’t be like that! It hasn’t even been a week with your new limbs. You can’t expect to be fully into them just yet!” Coiny reasoned.
“I just don’t feel normal. I can walk and move my arms around for a little bit, sure, but the moment I do something mildly stress-inducing on my body, I collapse like... like a jenga tower!”
“It’s no big deal, you’ll get the hang of it soon enough-!!”
“I lost my face, I lost my size, why can’t my limbs just come back normally like everything else…?”
Coiny frowned, rubbing Pin’s arm. “..I’m sorry, Pin.. If it were up to me, you’d be able to run and swing all you want with those new limbs. I’m sure there’s a scientific reason why it’s giving you a hard time.”
“Coiny, do I owe my face to you?” Pin asked seriously.
“W-What?? Of course not!” Coiny stuttered.
“You got it back for me in BFDIA 14… If I were to owe anyone something, it’d be you! Because you’re actually my friend..”
“We have other friends, don’t we, Pin?” Coiny asked hopefully.
“We do.. I suppose. It’s more like.. I’d say, old classmates that I’ve known for a really long time. Everyone kinda hates me.” Pin bluntly said.
“Ah-That’s-No, they don’t! You know that competitive edge you felt? That’s what they were feeling too! None of our friends actually hate us,” Coiny explained, “and also, you never have to pay me back for something that was rightfully yours! Ice Cube and Ruby took that away; I put it back! It’s just restoring what’s yours!”
Coiny’s little rant ended there, although Pin still didn’t look too convinced.
“You don’t owe anyone anything. You don’t have to be instantly used to your limbs again. You can just be Pin! Who cares what they think, or.. Thought at the time about you? You’re perfect.” Coiny smiled.
Pin let out a small whine and rolled herself to face away, but there was no doubt his words were starting to affect her positively.
“Aww, come on, Pin.” Coiny protested as she rolled onto her other side, his hand sliding off of her. “You know I’m right!”
“Maybe you are, but whatever. I’m too stubborn to admit it.” Pin muttered bluntly.
Coiny chuckled softly, gazing at Pin’s backside for a few seconds.
“Can you stand?” He asked.
“Huh? I could.. Probably. I’m exhausted..! Why?” Pin yawned.
“We should practice using your limbs!” Coiny offered enthusiastically.
“I’m too tiiiiiired…! We had enough physical activity today.” Pin whined.
“It’s as simple as a high five! No?” Coiny got to his feet and put one hand on his hip, his other swinging upwards and held there.
“I can’t..” Pin insisted.
“You literally lifted up a cinder block earlier. I know you can do this!”
“That brick was like, a hundred percent dust!”
“Doesn’t matter. Come on, Pin!” Coiny stood above her and took her hand, hoisting her up and onto her feet. Pin chuckled embarrassingly but kept her balance, albeit her legs were a bit wobbly, like the vibrating strings on a guitar.
“Did that run from earlier today really tire you? Are your legs like, dead?” Coiny asked.
“Sorry, I’m not as energetic as you, Coiny. But, yes. That’s why I chose this spot of grass to sit in!” Pin replied honestly, giving Coiny’s hand a small squeeze.
Coiny felt a small flutter in his chest at that, but brushed it off for the time being. He gave her hand a quick squeeze back before letting go and taking a few steps back.
“Up high!” Coiny waved his hand up high.
Pin bit her tongue and walked steadily towards him, her eyes focused on the ground ahead of her for a moment before she confidently walked up and slapped his hand. She didn’t even have to raise her arm that high, since Coiny was quite short compared to her.
“Yay!!” Pin celebrated, despite being uncooperative a few seconds ago.
“Yeahh, you did it!!” Coiny cheered her on. “Okay. How about a hug??” Coiny took another few steps back, accidentally bumping into a yoyleberry bush. Stepping into a clearer path, he held his arms out invitingly.
Pin’s expression was determined, but Coiny could already see a little bit of ooze coming down her face. The paleness of her colorless body made it just a tiny bit more noticeable. She took a few steps forward before she was struggling to hold her arms in place. They folded at strange angles as she tried to reposition them.
Pin wobbled slowly up to Coiny, her limbs stabilizing one moment and falling apart the next. Once she was within reach, her legs were getting out of sync. She nearly fell over but caught herself and kept pushing, standing her ground and making an effort to reach out to Coiny..!
Coiny smiled warmly and let his arms slacken to his side just for a moment, as his own arms were getting tight from holding them up for the last thirty seconds.
“You don’t need to be in a rush, bud-”
Suddenly, Pin’s arms lurched forwards just as she was mid-step, wrapping around Coiny and hugging him tightly against her. Her left arm wrapped over his head and her right arm draped tightly across his side, which brought their lips together in a crash as he was hoisted off the ground and into her.
“MMPH-??”
In that moment, a billion things went through Coiny’s mind at once, so much so that his main thought center malfunctioned as all he could feel was Pin’s soft lips on his own, with no thoughts. He didn’t question it for the first few seconds, and for some strange reason, she didn’t either.
Then, once the first few seconds of pure bliss passed, Coiny’s brain kicked back in. It simply added a layer of panic and surprise on top of the bliss, which, to be fair, wasn’t the worst thing ever.
What? Why did she do that? Well, obviously it’s because she has little control over her limbs; she only received them a few days ago! She doesn’t really... Wow, she’s warm.. And her eyes are pretty. I always noticed this before; why is it so weird I’m noticing it now?? That was our first kiss. I hope it doesn’t stop. I hope she doesn’t mind.
Wait.. I’ve been wanting to do this for so long. And now she’s done it for me!
Pin’s always been really cute.. And confident, never afraid of anyone!
If the deity objects are real, bless them for blessing me!
This might be the best moment of my life. I can’t believe it, Pin’s kissing me and it hasn’t stopped. It’s been a minute. I might as well start making o-
“MM-Gh!” Pin’s lips left Coiny after a few seconds, but her arms remained wrapped around him.
Their faces remained about an inch away from each other as they caught their breath, simply admiring each other's faces. Despite the sensory overload it gave both of them, as well as Pin holding Coiny off the ground, Pin’s legs remained rooted upright, and her embrace remained firm.
Coiny’s arms hung loosely in the air just like his jaw, his expression a mix of pure joy and surprise that just happened.
Coiny couldn’t particularly read Pin’s expression for the first few seconds after the kiss. But she must’ve seen how happy he was, and let her smile break out as well.
“Uhm.. Sorry about that, hehe?” Pin chuckled, blushing very hard.
“Oh my GOSH, Piiiiin!” Coiny squealed, “I could just fly with joy!!”
“Take me with youuu!!” Pin cheered, spinning them around as she hugged him against her once again.
“WoooAhhh.. Eeek!” Coiny whined as Pin spun them around. She stopped, and the dizziness caused her to finally topple over onto a soft patch of grass, Coiny never leaving her grasp.
“That was fun.. We should practice more!” Pin said enthusiastically.
Her eyes met Coiny’s again, and she suddenly remembered what she had just done.
“Uhhm, haha…”
“Did you do that on purpose, Pin?” Coiny accused playfully.
Pin chuckled, “I.. actually don’t know. I guess I wanted to hug you really bad and I... miscalculated. Maybe it was intentional, maybe it wasn’t! You liked it, didn’t you?”
“Yes yes yes! I really liked that, Pin… Is it obvious I like you?” Coiny smirked.
“Oh, you silly dumb dumb.” Pin rubbed his head with her hand. “You make it pretty obvious! I think you’re really neat-o as well!”
“Yeah, I get your.. Point!” Coiny reached up and poked the top of Pin’s point. She giggled softly in response.
“Wanna.. Do that again?” Pin asked, making it pretty obvious she really needed it.
Coiny’s gaze fell back onto her lips the moment she asked, and he went ahead and took the initiative for her. He leaned forward, a blade of grass nearly grazing his cheek, and smooched Pin right on her lips once again.
Pin closed her eyes giddily, which made Coiny close his as well. They sat in silence, feeling each other’s breath on each other before he broke it away.
“Thank you, Coiny.” Pin grinned.
“Don’t mention it, Pinhead..! You should thank yourself! That was a wonderful use of your own limbs, don’t ya think?”
“Oh, IT WAS ALRIGHT..” Pin joked, finally loosening her grip on Coiny. The both of them stretched their arms and legs in the purple grass, sitting a bit closer together than before.
The grass in Yoyleland wasn’t as spiky and itchy as the plains.. It would never beat that softness Pin had in her lips, though.
Gah, Coiny couldn’t think of anything else..!
Oh, he hoped to dream about something nice tonight.. Maybe he could give Pin a few more pecks for good luck..?
What did this mean for them? They’d been best friends for the longest time. What could this potentially blossom into..? Coiny could only think of the best.
Coiny’s train of thought was derailed as Pin turned over to face him. She yawned and patted a random patch of grass.
“Goodnight, Coiny.. I’m tired. You should go to bed too!”
Coiny laughed, “You still think this is more comfortable than the swing set?”
“I never slept in the swing set anyway! I’d always fall off the seat and end up on the grass anyway!” Pin admitted.
“Really??” Coiny’s eyebrows shot up.
“Yeah! So just go to bed. Don’t worry about me, I’m already as happy as can be..” Pin murmured, her gaze admiring Coiny.
“Me too.” Coiny agreed.
To each of them, the other was the last thing they saw before succumbing to sleep. And that was what they wanted.
