Work Text:
Megumi's head felt like it was just about to explode after his day at work, endless rounds of numbers and invoices made him want to jam his entire body into the printer. Being an accountant was easy, but boring, and tedious. Perfect for Megumi– but there were just some days when he couldn't take it anymore, such as today. The day had been an absolute mess, his boss dumped a stack of invoices on his desk that was at least twice the size of his head, and his computer had decided it was the perfect time to automatically start a 3 hour long update in the middle of his day, just great. At least it was almost over, he had two hours left before he could retreat to his shared apartment, he just had to hope that his roommate was still at work– or else that would just add onto his shitshow of a day.
His roommate was, well– obnoxious to say the least. Despite having a regular day job as a barista, he was always up until ungodly hours of the night streaming. Now, Yuji wasn't aware of the fact that he knew about his online persona, he tried so hard to keep it hidden but was insanely sloppy; besides that, there were some nights that Megumi could barely sleep. He would need at least 4 cups of coffee to even get through the first part of his day. He could not stand him, sometimes. There were only a few times that Megumi caught himself staring at Itadori a little too long, whether it was when he had just gotten out of the shower, or when he would wash the dishes with his sleeves rolled up; hell, sometimes Megumi would chew him out for being too loud ‘talking to whoever’ just to storm back into his room and watch his channel for the next hour on a burner account. Maybe he hadn't realized how much he really tolerated him, yes. Tolerated.
Letting out a sigh, he glanced around his office space noticing his coworkers hunching over their desks, they were all in this together, huh? He turned back to the stack of invoices he had to digitize and file before chugging the rest of his coffee and letting his brain work the same way that got him through college.
–
It took him three hours. Three whole hours to get through that stack. He was there an hour longer than he wanted to be, needed to be. What was wrong with him? Why couldn't he just focus? Trying to forget that his schedule had been thrown off by his own mistake, he dragged himself down the streets towards his building, passing by the various little shops and cafes that were still open despite the overly gloomy weather; he couldn't wait to get home and just crash.
He unlocked the front door hoping to be met with still silence all throughout the apartment only to have his ears be assaulted by the sound of pots and pans clanging together with the addition of the sink running and the oven timer going off. Somebody murder him. He'd finally be at peace.
Megumi let out a deep sigh and closed the door behind him before tugging off his shoes, spotting the pink hair in his kitchen. It only meant one thing, Itadori got off early and was now making a mess of their kitchen. Great. Fucking fantastic. That was the last thing he needed today, another screwup to fix.
“Hey Itadori, I thought you had work today?” Megumi asked before peeking into the kitchen, expecting to see a dumpster fire, but instead being met with the smell of ginger meatballs and the sight of Itadori washing dishes. With his sleeves rolled up. With water on them. Glistening.
“-guro, Fushiguro!” Yuji called out, “Hello? Earth to Fushiguro.” he shut off the sink and shook his hands around to dry them, turning to face the man standing in the doorway who was currently frozen.
“Oh uh,” Megumi finally snapped out of his daze, “Sorry, I was just– surprised. What did you say?” he asked, approaching the counter.
“Ah, it's okay!” Itadori scratched the back of his neck and tilted his head up a bit, “I was just saying that I had work but got off early since it was so slow. I thought you might be tired so I made food.. It's alright if you already ate.” Itadori stirred the pot slowly whilst Megumi processed what was going on, Itadori was cooking? For him?
“No, no, you're right actually. Today was– long... So, very, long.” Megumi let out a sigh and leaned back on the counter letting his muscles relax.
“Yikes, that sucks. You up for a movie night though?” itaodri asked before plating the meatballs and setting the dishes on the table.
Megumi scratched the back of his neck, contemplating. His day had been excruciating, but Itadori was being so nice he couldn’t say no. Not to mention that he and Itadori rarely spent any time together; considering that most days when Megumi came home, Yuji was either holed up in his room streaming, or knocked the fuck out until 2am– leaving Megumi alone to stir in his own thoughts. There was the occasional day that their schedules lined up, when Megumi actually got off work on time, and Itadori had inhaled some absurd amount of caffeine during his day shift giving him the ability to stay awake past 6pm.
Megumi tapped his fingers on the counter before answering, “Yeah I guess, I might fall asleep though, so no promises on making it through the whole thing.” he shrugged before sitting down to eat.
“Thats fine, I'm probably gonna… work– after, I'll try not to wake you up. I know you have to get up early.” Yuji said before taking the seat from across Megumi.
They ate in silence for a bit considering that there wasn't too much food to finish, Megumi couldn't help but dwell on the fact that Yuji said he was going to ‘work’, he was most definitely going to stream; Yuji never even took notes during his old classes, what made him think that he could trick Megumi with such an obvious lie?
“So, do you have a movie in mind?” Megumi asked, pushing around one of the meatballs on his plate.
“Mhm! Human Earthworm four.” a smile spread across his face while he chewed and spoke at the same time.
“Oh god, are they ever going to stop making those movies? There's enough as it is, you can't keep milking the plot like Spiderman." Megumi huffed, internally dreading the thought of having to sit through another one of those godforsaken movies that Yuji adored.
“Hey! They're amazing,” he pouted. “And this makes up for when you flaked out on me to see it in theatres!” Yuji argued, already cleaning up the dishes from the table.
“Well–that was something else, what snacks do you want?” Megumi asked, opening a few cabinets he knew Yuji kept food in; looking for anything that wasn't straight sugar.
Yuji rolled his eyes at his response before he answered, “Popcorn– and uh, Sour Patch Kids? Yeah.”
“Alright, go put it on before I change my mind.” As Megumi started gathering their snacks and throwing the popcorn in the microwave, he couldn't help but hear the couch squeak from Yuji's weight; along with the buttons on the remote clicking while the ac buzzed throughout the room. It all felt strangely, normal. Not like it had been for the past few months, more like everything was going the way it was intended to; almost as if they were right where they were supposed to be.
“I can't believe I'm actually watching this.” Megumi huffed as he sat down, leaving enough room between him and Itadori to place the popcorn and bowl of candy there.
“Shh, it's starting.” Yuji shut him up before reaching for the popcorn.
Megumi wanted to sink further into the couch, he was already tired from his insane workload and this movie felt like it was draining him even more. Why he agreed to watch it anyways is beyond him, maybe it's because he never saw Itadori. That wasn't it. Probably.
–
It took Itadori five full minutes of shaking megumis shoulders until his eyes finally opened, he had fallen asleep. Not even halfway through the movie.
“Ow! Jesus christ Itadori, what are you doing!?” megimi exclaimed, prying itadoris hands off of him.
“You sleep like a rock its not my fault, I was just waking you up!” Yuji countered. “You fell asleep, like, immediately. Kinda sucked.” He started to scratch the back of his head retracting to his original spot, he looked upset. Like a kicked puppy.
“Oh, I'm sorry. I told you I was exhausted.” Megumi did feel bad, but he also needed that sleep. There was something about the look on Itadoris that made his heart clench, did he do something? Did something happen while he was asleep?
“Its- its alright, I get it. Uhm- im gonna go, go– work." Itadori hastily stood up brushing himself off, leaving Megumi stranded on the couch with the empty snack bowls. Did he do something?
“Uh– okay.. I'm gonna head to bed then, goodnight,” Megumi said whilst cleaning up the couch, he was so confused. The only thing that snapped him out of his thoughts was Itadoris door slamming shut
Megumi got up and headed to his room after dropping the dishes in the sink. He quickly changed into baggier and arguably comfier clothes before sinking into his bed; it was so soft. He settled under the sheets, effectively letting himself relax. He pulled out his phone, wanting to set his alarms and get his well deserved sleep before he got a notification that Itadori was live.
–
As soon as he woke up Megumi realized he had made a grave mistake. It was currently 7am, he fell asleep at four. He may or may not have stayed up for 5 hours solely watching Itadoris stream without him noticing, he totally didn't.
Megumi had never seen Itadori up this early the entire time they had lived together, which means that he always got mornings to himself. Megumi left his room to go take a quick shower and get dressed. Double checking his pockets and grabbing his coffee, he left the apartment without a second thought; not realizing that something had slipped his mind completely from his lack of sleep.
He got to the office surprisingly fast, maybe today would be the complete opposite of yesterday. You know, tolerable? Since he did the majority of his paperwork yesterday he was put on a simple yet grueling task, digitizing. God how he wishes there was an intern to do this. There was always an occasional day where the boss's kid would come in and would do all of this stuff but she rarely came by anymore, Ozawa was it? He couldn't remember; it had been so long. Taking his mind off the past, he refocused his gaze on his desk that was scattered with papers and post-its before he let out a long sigh. He just wanted to go home, andhangoutwithhisadorableycuteroommate.
Wait, who said that?
–
He had been sitting at his desk for 4 straight hours. God help him. His butt was aching, his head was pounding, and his eyes were starting to burn from only looking at his computer. All he wanted to do was grab his lunch, eat, and sit down on the sofa in his office. Or at least a comfier chair. Pulling himself off his seat he could feel his muscles relaxing immediately, he shuffled his way to the kitchen, grateful to finally be on break. Leaning down to see into the shared office fridge, he searched top to bottom looking for his specific brand of tupperware, the clean sleek one that was easy to wash. However, Megumi couldn’t find a trace of it. The food he had been looking forward to was gone. He had to accept his fate, he was so thrown off this morning that he had forgotten to grab his lunch. Letting out his 87th sigh of the day, he retreated back into his uncomfortable office seat to think over his options. Either spend an absurd amount of money on doordash, don't eat, or run down the block to grab food during the lunch rush; although he would most likely run out of time to eat if he tried that. He's gonna have to tough it out, he’ll make dinner when he gets home, probably, it might just be instant noodles. Who cares if he fucked up his metabolism, it didnt matter. Megumi reluctantly starts chipping away at his pile of work, counting down the minutes until he could leave.
It took him a bit but in a mere 20 minutes, the span of his ‘break’, he had made quite a dent in his work, he was mid scan before his thoughts were interrupted by an unusually loud voice, extremely unfit for an office setting.
“Fushiguro? Fushigurooo!” the loud voice boomed.
What was going on?
He craned his neck around his monitor trying to find whoever was calling his name, spotting that familiar bright pink hair that was now carrying a box, specifically– Megumis tupperware. Quickly looking around the room, Megumi spotted all of his coworkers staring up at Yuji. Some groaned and rolled their eyes from the disturbance, whilst others were completely enamored; it made his heart ache a bit.
“There you are!” Yuji found Fushiguro's desk and placed the container down in front of him.
Megumi's coworkers were now gaping at the scene, his soul had already started to ascend. Why–why him. Why now? The quiet, efficient, gloomy man was now drawing the attention from the entire office floor. All because of his loud mouthed roommate.
“I saw your lunch on the counter and thought you forgot it so I just wanted to drop it off before I had to clock in.” Itadori said with a smile, not aware of the 5 people staring right at them.
“Uhm, yeah. Thank you, Itadori.” Megumi rubbed his forehead a bit, trying not to think of the fact that his reputation had been absolutely destroyed.
“Ive gotta get going, see you at home Fushi!” Yuji slipped out of his office, not before high fiving his boss on the way out.
He is definitely getting fired.
Megumi let out a deep sigh and dropped his head into his keyboard as he heard the inevitable sound of heels clicking towards his desk, he didn't need yet another headache.
“So, who's the new boyfriend?”
Megumi refused to acknowledge the voice talking to him and instead just groaned into his keyboard, until he felt nails digging into his hair to pull up his head.
Having his head forcefully removed from his desk, he was met with the sight of Nobara Kugisaki, his best friend since 6th grade. They eventually ended up working at the same company to help each other, not to mention it was close to their house; Nobara had been Megumi's roommate before Itadori. That was until one game night with their friends, Inumaki, Yuuta, Maki, along with a couple others where Nobara and Maki decided to cross the line of being friends. Megumi had procrastinated replacing her as a roommate, wanting to enjoy the solitude of living alone for as long as he could, although he was starting to run behind on rent and needed a roommate. Fast. Which is how he ended up with this thing, who bounced around minimum wage jobs with his stupid pink hair and stupidly expensive gaming setup. How did he even pay for that?!
“Good afternoon to you too.” Megumi gritted out through clenched teeth, he was not in the mood for Nobara right now.
“No, seriously. You didn't tell me you've been dating anyone, the whole office is buzzing.” She released his hair, letting him sit up on his own.
"I'm not dating anyone Kugisaki." Megumi grunted, turning back to his computer, trying not to look at the lunch left on his desk.
"So then who was that? A good samaritan? Did you sign up for meals on wheels, Fushiguro?" Nobara pressed, the rest of the office was pretending to do their work, trying not to get caught slacking.
Megumi let out a sigh, "It was my roommate, okay? I was desperate when you moved out. And that's what I ended up with."
"Oh. Oh. Roommate you say?"
"It's not like that, he's straight. I think. He had a Jennifer Lawrence poster in his room that he stares at every night, that's not exactly gay." Megumi grunted, he just wanted to go home. He wasn't even hungry anymore.
"God, your life is so boring. Do you at least like him?" Nobara pressed, leaning in closer.
"Shut up, my life is perfectly fine. And– he's okay." He continued to type, hoping Nobara would just leave him alone.
"So when can I meet him?" She asked, stalling until she had to go back to work.
"Why would you want to meet him?" He deadpanned, this was starting to give him a headache.
"Because i'm your best friend, matter of fact i'm your only friend. I think I should be able to meet your 'roommate'."
"Whatever, you won't give up." Megumi rolled his eyes, not even sparing her a second glance.
"I'm glad you know me so well." A smirk appeared on her face, "I'll be there at 6, I want steak." She finally retreated to her desk before Megumi could even argue, he just wanted to go home. He let out a string of curses under his breath before going back to work, 5 hours, that's all he had left.
–
Despite his relatively easy workload today, he felt exhausted, drained, his brain was fried. As he was walking home he passed by the corner store coffee shop that Itadori worked at. He was tired, a coffee couldn't hurt. And it was absolutely not going there only to see Itadori possibly sweating and stressed, he only needed caffeine.
The door opened with a jingle, the female barista at the counter glanced up and greeted Megumi with a nod. It wasn't Itadori, but he was able to spot his salmon pink hair in the back. Stepping up to the counter Megumi ordered his regular black coffee, Nobara had always called him crazy for drinking it straight but he really needed it, especially if he had to deal with her later.
The barista politely smiled at him before he went to stand over near the counter, it took only a minute before his order was put out. Grabbing the cup he noticed the extra black coloring along the side of the cup, he brought it closer to his face and realized that it was a phone number. Looking up he saw the barista blushing back at the register, his stomach started to turn but he kept a straight face, trying to not let his discomfort show. This day was–something. As soon as he was about to leave the coffee shop, vowing to never go back there again, he heard somebody call out.
"Wait! Fushiguro!"
He stopped mid motion, watching his roommate slip out from behind the counter.
"I didn't know you were stopping by today!" Itadori tucked the hand towel he was holding into his apron pocket.
"I wasn't planning on it. Work was just exhausting." Megumi sighed, tapping his fingers on the side of his cup.
"That sucks, I can make dinner tonight if you want?" Yuji offered, a smile gracing his face.
"No, it's fine. And uh, Nobara is coming over. I think I told you about her? I hope it's not a problem. You know it would be a shame if I had to cancel." Megumi explained, taking a sip of his coffee.
"It's no problem, it wouldn't be bad to have company over anyways." Yuji's smile widened as he looked over at Megumi. "What's on your cup..?" he asked.
"Uh.. nothing? I just got plain black." Megumi tilted his head a bit, this was the most he had talked to Itadori outside of their home, it felt.. Weird.
"There's something on the side though?" Yuji leaned in a bit closer so he could read. "Oh, it's a number." Although it was slight, Megumi noticed the falter in Yuji's smile.
"Uh, yeah, I'll see you later. Bye, Itadori." Megumi turned away with a wave finally leaving that place. What just happened.
–
Megumi finally reached their apartment, he really just wanted to pass out on his bed, but he had to pull himself together for not only Nobara, but also Yuji. He chugged the rest of his coffee, the bitter taste coating his mouth. He closed his eyes for a moment clearing his mind before discarding the cup without a second thought.
He had just barely opened the groceries he had bought on the way home to please Nobara, before he heard the door open and close unusually loud. Megumi turned his head, seeing Itadori walk in, he looked relatively tense. Itadori threw his keys onto the counter with more force than usual, his normal smile nowhere to be seen.
"Welcome.. home? Are you okay?" Megumi asked, putting the groceries down.
"I'm fine." Yuji let out a deep sigh, "Are you calling that barista back? Her name is Hana, by the way."
"What are you talking about?" Megumi crossed his arms, fully facing his roommate now.
"She gave you her number, no? On the cup." He clarified.
"I mean yes? I threw it out though, it's not that big of a deal." Megumi went back to the groceries, Nobara hadn't even told him what time she was coming, he just had to hope they were on the same wavelength.
"It really didn't mean that much to you?" Yuji pushed, leaning forward on the kitchen counter.
"Mhm." Megumi sneered through gritted teeth, why was he making such a big deal out of this?!
“Are you sure? What did it mean to you?” Yuji started to grip the counter.
"What are you trying to say?" Megumi crossed his arms over his chest, he just couldn't catch a break.
"She obviously likes you, so why won't you go out with her? Are you oblivious or just mean?!"
"Itadori, I'm gay." Megumi punched his nose bridge out of frustration before turning back to the groceries, at this point Nobara would walk into their argument.
"What?" Yuji sputtered, his grip on the counter had loosened. "Since when?! You didn't tell me?"
"It's not that big of a deal, it doesn't make much of a difference." He continued to unpack the groceries, his back turned to Itadori.
"Yes actually, it is a big deal. This changes everything!" Yuji exclaimed, throwing his hands up.
Megumi let out a deep sigh, "What could it possibly change Itadori." He rolled his eyes the slightest bit before placing one of the steaks onto the preheated pan.
"Megumi." Yuji deadpanned, pushing himself off the counter.
Megumi raised his eyebrow and turned towards Itadori, caught off guard by the use of his first name. Before he could even process what was happening he realized Yuji was kissing him. In the middle of the kitchen.
Megumi's eyes shot open, pushing Yuji off of him. "What the hell are you doing?!"
“Wha-” Yuji stumbled back looking like a lost dog. “I really like you, Megumi.”
“...What?” The steak was long forgotten, Megumi's brain was struggling to catch up to what was going on.
Yuji just stood there, fidgeting with his hands and trying to look Megumi in the eye, except he was failing.
Megumi was at a loss for words, just staring at the stupid pink haired boy in front of him. He tried to process his thoughts but nothing seemed to register in his head, that was until his eyes drifted over Yuji's face that he realized what he truly felt.
Against all of his logical thinking, Megumi reached up to cup Yuji's face, running his thumb over his cheek, it felt like his fingers were on fire. Megumi just stared into his coffee colored eyes, waiting for a signal, a response, anything. It was only until Yuji brought one of his hands up to rest on top of Megumi's that his body relaxed out of relief, Megumi leaned in and kissed him. It took Yuji a moment to adjust to what was going on, but he quickly returned the kiss, having his now trembling hands find the base of Megumi's waist. Yuji's tongue made its way into Megumi's mouth, slipping past his lips, putting even more pressure into the kiss, effectively pushing Megumi into the counter.
"Ow!" Megumi hissed, their mouths still pressed together, as his back collided with the edge of their freezing granite countertops.
"Sorry!" Yuji mumbled, pulling back the slightest bit just so he could see Megumi's face. A smile spread across Yuji's face before weaving his hands through the back of Megumi's hair, leaning back in for another kiss.
Despite the counter digging into Megumi’s back, Yuji continued to press more into the kiss— slightly pulling at Megumi’s hair as their hips pressed against each other. Yuji slightly moaned into the kiss, his face immediately turning a bright shade of pink while Megumi sequentially let out some sounds he was the proudest of.
Megumi's hands slipped underneath Yuji's navy blue shirt, mapping out each and every muscle as his cold hands pressed against Yuji's unusually hot body. Yuji's hips involuntarily jerked forwards, making him pull back for a moment to not only breathe, but to also grimace in embarrassment. The kitchen was starting to reek of smoke but they couldn't care less.
This time Megumi was the one to lean back in, wrapping his hands around Yuji's neck instead of his waist, just as he was about to let out a devastatingly embarrassing noise, they heard the door unlock.
Trying to scramble off of each other, unsure of who was at the door, both of their faces turned a hot shade of pink as Nobara closed the door behind her.
"I knew it!" she exclaimed, pointing an accusatory finger at Megumi, an amused smirk on her face. "You two are dating!"
She placed her bags down like she owned the place, sneaking peeks at their mail. Just as Megumi was about to respond, a shrill beeping filled the room.
The smoke detector. Of course.
Megumi let out a deep sigh, grabbing a hand towel off the counter to fan the alarm whilst Yuji whipped his head towards the stove, immediately turning the gas off.
"Megumi Fushiguro. You better have not burned my steak." Nobara shot him a death glare while he just rolled his eyes.
Whatever just happened, he was glad it did. Although, he was not looking forward to Nobara's mandatory debriefing tomorrow.
