Work Header

What a curious life we have found here tonight

Summary:

The smell of home cooked food filled the air. Karma sat at the table across from a small plate of reheated stir fry.

“Thank you, handsome.” Nagisa gave Karma a quick kiss on the cheek before rounding the table and sitting down.

Or

Nagisa gets home late on a Friday night, domestic fluff ensues.

Notes:

Title from “In the Aeroplane Over the Sea” by Neutral Milk Hotel

The AU this fic is set in is Nagisa being a full time teacher and a part time assassin, nothing much changed with Karma and they’re married. (We ignore the fact that gay marriage still isn’t legal in Japan.)

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Nagisa made his way home. It was late, of course he’d get a hit assignment on a Friday night. It wasn’t a particularly difficult job, all he had to do was stop some guy on his way home and kill him. Any other day it would’ve been a walk in the park but his students had tried particularly hard to attack him today and he spent a surprising amount of energy dodging their hits.

“I’m home!” He called, flicking on the entry light and slipping his shoes off.

All the rest of the rooms were dark and Nagisa wondered for a moment if he should be worried. He could feel that Karma was in the house, but usually he’d meet Nagisa at the door.

He cautiously took a few steps forward, “Karma?”

“In here!” Ok. That was a recording.

It was odd. There were no traces of anyone else in the house but why would Karma be playing a recording of his own voice?

He heard someone move behind him.

In one swift movement he pulled his knife from its sheath, and pinned the person to the wall, blade at their throat.

“Damn, should’ve known the recording wouldn’t work.”

“Karma?!” He stached the knife again. “What the hell are you doing?”

“Wanted to try and sneak up on ya, but I should’ve known, nothing gets past you.” Karma leaned down and pressed a soft kiss to the top of Nagisa’s head.

“You had me worried for a second, jerk.”

Karma lightly chuckled. “Honestly, I’m surprised you didn’t realize faster. Long day?”

“Yeah, my kids were particularly enthusiastic today, target also managed to fight back a bit.” Nagisa slumped down at the table.

Karma pulled some leftovers from the fridge and started reheating them. “Anything I need to look at?”

“No, just some bruises, nothing that won’t heal on its own in a week or two.”

“Alright, let me know if you need anything.”

“I will.” He made his way into the kitchen and snaked his arms around Karma’s waist, resting his forehead between Karma’s shoulder blades.

“Shouldn’t you get changed?”

“Yeah, just need this for a second.” His hold tightened slightly.

“God, you really are like a mouse.”

“Shut up.”

After a few minutes Nagisa stepped out to their room to change.

Karma always thought the assassination outfit was a bit silly. It was modeled after the E-class combat suits—Mr. Karasuma’s idea. Just putting it on always gave Nagisa a bit of extra confidence.

After taking an eerily quick shower he tugged on some comfy sweatpants and one of Karma’s t-shirts, dropping the dirty clothes in the laundry hamper on the way back to the kitchen.

The smell of home cooked food filled the air. Karma sat at the table across from a small plate of reheated stir fry.

“Thank you, handsome.” Nagisa gave Karma a quick kiss on the cheek before rounding the table and sitting down. “So, how about your day? Anything interesting?”

“Not really. Just a bunch of paper work and boring guys in suits talking about economics.”

“What time did you get home?”

“Around seven.”

“Sorry, I was hoping I’d be home earlier.”

“It’s fine, I know you don’t got a ton of control over hits.”

“Still, I wish they’d at least give me some warning ahead of time.” He stabbed at his food.

“Nice that it’s Friday, though, we get to sleep in tomorrow.”

“Yeah, I guess.”

“What, you don’t want to spend half the day in bed with your incredible, handsome, rich, husband?”

“You’re such an idiot.” Nagisa covered his mouth and laughed softly.

“I know.” Karma rested his chin in his hand and stared at Nagisa.

“What? Did I miss a spot of blood or something?” He wiped at his face.

“No, just lookin’ at your silly little mouse face, honey.”

Nagisa blushed. “You’re so sappy. If junior high Karma saw you right now he’d try to punch you.”

“And I’d dodge easily because he thought he was way more badass than he was. Mini Nagisa was way cooler.”

“Oh please, the only person I managed to beat in junior high was Takaoka.”

“Twice. Also, are you forgetting when you won our epic fight, or am I just not a notable enough opponent?” He tilted his head, even now he never lost his love for teasing Nagisa.

“I won that on a technicality.”

“How is one of the world’s best assassins sitting across from me and trying to say he’s bad at fighting?”

Nagisa slid his now empty plate and fork further ahead of him. “I’m not bad at it anymore, but back then I definitely was.”

“Yeah, yeah.” Karma got up, walked around the table and abruptly picked Nagisa up, carrying him to their room.

“Karma!” He faux struggled. Anyone who knew him could tell he wasn’t really trying, if he was he could be out of Karma’s grasp in seconds.

Karma trailed kisses up Nagisa’s jaw and he laughed, wrapping his arms around Karma. “Hey!”

“C’mon, I’m getting tired and you’ve had a long day.”

“Okay, okay!” Nagisa pressed his lips to Karma’s as they fell into bed and settled under the blankets, still laughing lightly through it.

Nagisa comfortably curled into Karma’s chest, wrapped in his warm embrace. Karma’s head rested on top of his.

“Karma?”

“Mn?”

“Thank you for tonight. You’re amazing.”

“Or course I am, that’s why you married me~”

Nagisa tilted his head up and pressed a surprisingly chaste kiss to Karma’s collarbone, peeking out from his t-shirt. “Goodnight Karma, I love you.” He snuggled in even closer.

“I love you too, sleep well.”

With a final kiss to Nagisa’s head they both drifted off.

Notes:

My cutiesss! This fandom’s kinda dead but the hyper-fixation came back out of nowhere and hit me like a train so I have this along with plans for a potential long fic when I finish my Salvis one.

Kudos and comments are appreciated!!❤️
