Chapter Text
“Are we nearly there yet?” Today isn’t any ordinary day for y/n. Today is the day he started a new life, A life in Queens. “Almost honey, just down this street” - His mother responds seemingly more focused on following behind the moving truck. It appears they were driving down a street in Forest Hills, all the houses looked uniform in their respective colours with the same woodlike exterior, is this what the american dream was supposed to be with those white picket fences? Who knows. To y/n they looked devoid of personality, almost too perfect and alike.
“And~ we’re here!” y/n’s mother melodically announces their arrival, parking the car in the small driveway. y/n looks out his car window at their new home before stepping out to make sure he knows what he’s looking at. Yep… just like every other house on this street, maybe he could spruce it up with his own little touch later. “So this is where we’re staying?” He asked, though it was obvious, mostly trying to process this whole moving thing. “Yes dear, it’ll be far better than where we lived before I promise.” His mother responds as she opens the front door to the house.
y/n and his mother moved from their previous city for a fresh start. After the divorce between his parents, his mother figured they needed a change of scenery after she gained full custody, so Forest Hills in Queens, New York was the destination. Conveniently enough, this is where y/n’s mother grew up. So fortunately for them she knew the area like the back of her hand and they had family and friends here. y/n however, had never been here, not even in the holidays to visit family. They always came to them a few states over.
“If you’re sure mom” y/n was uncertain about all this, maybe because he didn’t like change much, or maybe because he was already feeling a little homesick. “Maybe you should go check out your room, it's just upstairs to the left.” His mother thought that once y/n is familiar with his new home, maybe he’d think otherwise about this place. So with that, y/n made his way up their creaky wooden steps, turning left down the empty corridor and into an equally empty room.
The room was pretty spacious, bigger than his previous bedroom. He immediately wondered what he could do to the room to give it a little y/n twist to it, he is quite artsy; “Maybe I could paint something on this wall…” He thought about the wall facing where he’d already planned on placing his bed. Though, he wasn’t even sure if he was allowed to paint the walls in this house. He’ll have to ask his mom later, taking a mental note of that.
On the opposite side of the room facing the door, there was a window, outside was the road where y/n could see the workers moving the boxes from the van to the house, he was quite fortunate he didn’t have to carry those boxes, though he jinxed himself in thought as he heard “Y/N! Come help unpack once you’re done!”... That was the last thing he wanted to hear, y/n wasn’t one for manual labour, nor was he the most athletic. “Okay!” he yelled despite his distaste for unpacking. He took one last look out his window, to salvage this moment before he went into what he’d call slave labour.
He looked at the opposing house on the other side of the street. Sure it was the same old exterior like any other house on this boring street. But there was a boy, about his age, rushing out of this house. “See you later, Aunt May!” The boy seemed to yell with his mouth full of toast as he hurriedly pulled his shoes on properly, despite already being a step or two out of the house. y/n watched as the other pulled himself together on this cold early morning. “He’s cute” y/n thought to himself as the boy conveniently looked over to the newcomers on the other side of the street, almost as if he knew someone was watching him. y/n looked away as his face flushed a little red. He quickly made himself busy, moving to help unpack. “Hm? That was odd…” The boy opposite the street spoke, distracted by the new neighbours. He quickly snapped out of it, forgetting he was late for school and began rushing to be there on time.
It took almost the entire day to fully settle in and unpack all of the belongings y/n and his mother brought to this house. The house was coming together nicely, y/n… not so much, he slouched exhaustedly onto the couch looking up at the ceiling as his mother ordered some pizza on the phone to their address. “Are you excited to start school tomorrow?” y/n’s mother asked as she finished up on the phone. “Hm?” oh yeah thats right, y/n will be going to Midtown High as of tomorrow, he almost forgot about it, having been distracted by all those damn boxes, boy was he tired. “Uh… Yeah I guess…” He sighed heavily, making his response clearly wrong. He didn’t mind starting a new school, he just worried about the students, the potential bullies, the usual stuff.
“Oh i’m sure it’ll be fun y/n, give it a chance! I’m pretty sure one of our neighbours also attends that school.” His mother practically wafts away y/n’s negativity, though his interest peaked after she spoke, maybe it's the boy you saw earlier today. Before he could respond, there was a knock on the front door. “Oh that must be the pizza, could you get the door for me y/n?” His mother asked as she was busy unpacking some framed photos onto the kitchen counter, she was planning to put them up tomorrow whilst y/n was in school. “On it!” y/n was excited to have food, he felt like he hadn’t eaten all day, screw that all week. He opened the door only to be met by a woman… she most definitely wasn’t delivering pizza. y/n looked at her quizzically with a tilt of his head.
“Hey! I just wanted to welcome you and your family to the neighbourhood. I saw you arrive this morning. My names May, my nephew Peter and I live in the house opposite yours.” The woman introduced herself as May. y/n remembers their neighbour yelling goodbye this morning to someone called Aunt May, this must be her. Before y/n could speak, his mother came up behind him and started excitedly talking to their neighbor. y/n greeted her and thanked her for coming before carefully taking the gift she brought for them as requested from his mother. The gift was a jar full of homemade chocolate chip cookies, they looked fresh… but it still wasn’t pizza. Though he couldn’t wait to dig into the cookies after dinner. “So his name's Peter” Y/n thought to himself remembering that from the brief conversation before making himself comfortable for dinner.
Bzz! Bzz! Bzz! Y/n knocks over his alarm from his bedside as it rings through one ear and out the other. He groans loudly whining at how early he had to wake up. He laid there staring at the ceiling of the unfamiliar house, almost forgetting they had moved. “Oh… School” He whines in his tired state before hoisting himself out of bed. He made his way to a box of clothes he was yet to unpack and opened it, rummaging through the box until he found an outfit fitting for school today. Just a simple t-shirt and jeans in his favourite colour, nothing too special. Before he even left his room he could smell what seemed to be pancakes being made from the kitchen downstairs.
“Morning~” Y/n yawned as he greets his mother downstairs in the kitchen before making his way to the dining table. “Good morning sleepy head, I see you slept well” his mother responds with a light chuckle as she carries a plate of pancakes over to y/n, commenting on the bed head forgetting to clean up. He’ll do it after food. “Slept like a king.” Y/n rolled his eyes as he spoke, tiredly digging his fork into the pancakes and taking a large bite into them. The food gave him the energy to start the day off, perking up at how good the pancakes were.
“I’ll be driving you into school for this week honey. But remember after this week you’ll be taking the school bus to school.” The mention of school made y/n a little sick to his stomach, he wasn’t all too worried about it yesterday, but now that the day has come maybe his anxiety was showing its colours more. “Does that mean I'll have to wake up even earlier than this?” y/n whined already knowing the answer would be yes, he most definitely wasn’t a morning person. “Yes honey, I start my new job next week so I won't have time to take you in the mornings.” That's right, one of the main reasons they moved here was because she was able to get a job in her families business not far from where they lived, though y/n didn’t know much about it. y/n simply just nods as he finishes his pancakes.
“Oh! I almost forgot. I spoke to our neighbour last night and offered to give their Nephew lifts to school this week since we’re heading there anyways. So he’ll be coming with us today.” Hear this almost made y/n choke on the remains of his pancakes. “He’s coming with us?” y/n repeats as if he was hard of hearing, but what he heard was true. “Yes y/n, so finish up so we can get a move on. We don’t want you to be late on your first day” and with that, seconds later y/n was adjusting his hair like a mad-man before making his way out of the house and into the car.
They reversed out of the driveway onto the street and waited for their neighbour. It didn’t take long before the boy came out of the house and sat in the back of the car with y/n. He had brown hair brushed to the side, complimented with his brown lively eyes and a welcoming smile, which he greeted y/n with awkwardly as y/n’s mother started to drive off. “Uh Hi! I’m Peter Parker.” He introduced himself in his awkward nerdy style as y/n gulped a little… he’s cute. “I-I uhh… y/n, nice to meet you” y/n was just as, if not worse, at introducing himself as he fidgets a little with the straps of his backpack.
After one horrifically awkward car ride later, they arrive at Midtown High where y/n lets out a deep breath before leaving the car. “Thanks mom! See you later” he said his goodbye as Peter politely did the same. Though Peter didn’t go his separate way once they were left alone. “Follow me” He encouraged y/n as he began to walk through the entrance and towards the reception desk, y/n just followed like a lost puppy. “Oh Peter, nice to see you on time for once.” The lady at the reception desk greeted Peter with a hint of sarcasm before then looking behind him to see y/n. “And you must be the new student… Give me just a minute.” She spoke and moved at a snail's pace as if she hates doing the job she applied for herself. y/n just stood there behind Peter until he moved out the way to sit down on a nearby chair, scrolling through his phone. Not long later, the reception lady came back with a large envelope.
“Everything you need is in this envelope, you should have a look at your timetable… It looks like you’ve already met your guide, so I'll leave you boys to it." The lady spoke monotonal as she sat back down at her chair to start loudly typing away at her computer. y/n seemed a little confused before Peter stood back up. “Yep thats me” Peter spoke with a small grin, at least y/n’s guide was someone he already knew, even if he was barely familiar with him. “Lets see what classes you’ve got” Peter seemed more excited about all of this than y/n. y/n opened his envelope and found a piece of paper with his timetable on it. Peter leaned over to see what subjects y/n has today.
“Oh we don’t have any of the same lessons today” He spoke with a small sigh. “Oh really?” y/n finally spoke up in response as he looked at the paper. “Yeah all of your stuff is like… artsy… but we share the same science lessons for the rest of the week” Peter grinned after speaking, but all he could think about was that he shared a lesson with him even if it was just one. “I was starting to think I would be going into all of this alone” y/n was relieved to say the least, knowing he’d at least have one lesson with Peter, even if it wasn’t today.
Peter chuckled slightly as he listened to y/n’s worries. “You’ll be fine y/n, i’ll take you to your first class” He guided y/n along the corridors of the school, what was his first lesson? He looked down at his paper to notice he had Art first period. He was kind of relieved, it was his best subject after all. On the way to the Art classroom Peter pointed out where y/n’s locker was before they headed over, so that he didn’t need to carry his backpack around with him the entire day.
Once Peter was finished being a little tour guide, giving y/n little facts and notes on different places in the school as they walked by them, they ended up in front of the Art classroom. Y/n couldn’t help but think of how Peter knows so much about this school, was he smart or something? y/n was sure he’ll learn at some point. “Thank you for showing me around Peter…” Y/n thanked Peter for his time, not knowing that the boy's first lesson was on the other side of the school. “Anytime y/n, i’ll see you later?” Peter asked which confused y/n, he must mean after school. “Yeah, see you later Peter” y/n responds happily as Peter makes his way to his own classroom. Now y/n stood outside his first class hoping that what lies ahead for him isn’t bad. Though at the end of the day, he’s got Peter so it shouldn’t be too bad right?
