The F3X is a truly formidable tool, one to be handled with utmost precaution and responsibility. And Devesto… was anything but responsible in the ways he utilized it. It served solely for his own amusement, which more often than not was at the detriment of anyone else who happened to be around him given his typically reckless nature.
Whether it be testing the limits of its power or simply trying to cure his boredom, the B-Tools were his main source of entertainment. And the possibilities were nearly endless: He could do anything from unanchoring entire buildings, to creating his own wildly elaborate structures, or even a summoning flurry of banana peels just to pester a particular magician. That one never got old… for Devesto, at least.
But, over time, he slowly would end up accumulating a lot of random junk that he probably wouldn't need in the long run. Perhaps now might be a good time to go through it all and clear some of it out to make some space. As much as he enjoyed slaughtering civilians and just generally causing mayhem, it couldn’t hurt to partake in something a little less destructive every now and then. A break from the chaos could be good for him.
And, that’s when Devesto came across it.
As he was digging through all the obsolete gears, unused building materials and other miscellaneous items, he found… a stuffed bunny.
Soft cream-colored fur, long floppy ears, and small beady eyes. An oddly ‘cute’ thing for someone like him to own, and for something he’d totally forgotten about, it was in exceptionally pristine condition compared to most of everything else. How long had he been holding onto this for, anyway?
Whatever. Not like it mattered. He was going to get rid of it like everything else. Maybe even delete the object entirely. He had absolutely zero attachment to this thing, so there was no reason for him to keep it for any longer.
…But then he had an idea. A peculiar idea.
A certain someone suddenly popped into his mind the longer he stared at the stuffed animal in his hands, someone who seemed more the type to be interested in this type of thing. Devesto tried to dismiss the idea initially, thinking it was stupid. But those rabbit’s eyes, as lifeless as they were, still somehow felt like they were peering right into his soul. ‘Go on, do it. I dare you,’ he swore it practically egged him on.
As much as he tried to resist, eventually, Devesto sighed in defeat and gave in to the imaginary demands. Maybe there was another way he could get rid of it after all…
Just be cool about it.
Walk up to him, give him the plush, and then move on. A perfectly simple task. Nothing to worry about.
That’s what Devesto thought to himself as he approached MeQuot, who he had found sitting outside underneath a tree with a book in his hands. Not exactly a shocking place to find him. It was somewhere he could relax and get a bit of sun, while also in a secluded enough area to avoid any unwanted attention.
MeQuot eventually picked his head up once he heard him getting closer, a look of surprise coming over him. “O-Oh! Devesto! Hello there.”
Devesto simply gave him a brief wave in return. No need for a grand entrance or anything.
“What brings you here of all places?” the immortal man asked curiously.
“Going out for a bit. Happened to be on my route,” he shrugged. That sounded believable enough, and maybe wasn’t entirely untrue depending on how his day ended up going.
Thankfully, MeQuot didn’t question his reasoning. He just nodded and returned to his book. “Is that so? Well, that’s perfectly alright. I certainly don’t mind having a bit of company.”
Devesto nodded silently at that. God, MeQuot was always so stupidly peaceful. Even with all the constant murder and shit that went on around these parts, which MeQuot himself would sometimes unwillingly get dragged into, he still tried his best to live as normal of a life as he could. One part of Devesto found it hilarious, while another part found it almost infuriating.
But of course, he didn’t stop by to stand there and stare at MeQuot like that. He came here for a reason, and he didn’t want to waste any more time than he already had. So quietly, using the B-Tools, Devesto brought out the stuffed animal and hovered it over in his direction.
Devesto didn’t bring any attention to it at first, waiting for MeQuot to notice on his own, but he remained completely unaware of it. When that eventually didn’t work, Devesto cleared his throat a little too loud for it to be natural. That successfully got him to perk back up again, and once he did, he visibly jumped a little when he saw the rabbit floating right beside him.
MeQuot looked at it with confusion, then looked back at Devesto. “Um... what is this?”
“Just hurry up and take the thing, damn it…” Devesto quickly answered.
MeQuot hesitated for another moment or two, before reaching out and allowing Devesto to drop it into his hands. He carefully examined the object, like he was trying to figure out if this was meant to be some kind of trick.
“You’re giving this to me?” he asked, tilting his head slightly.
“Was just gonna throw it away or something, but…” Devesto awkwardly shoved his hands in his pockets. “Figured you might have a use for it, so it’s yours if you want.”
MeQuot’s attention returned to the rabbit once more, gently ruffling the fur on its head. Seeing the two of them side-to-side, Devesto swore that MeQuot and that bunny seemed awfully similar to one another for some reason… though he quickly banished the thought once he realized how strange of a comparison that was.
After a bit more silence, MeQuot finally seemed to understand when the initial look of bewilderment on his face then shifted into something brighter, and his eyes lit up. “Devesto, that’s… that’s really nice of you,” he smiled gently, holding the plush closer as if it were something precious to him. “I actually happen to really love rabbits.”
Devesto could feel a soft warmth start creeping up on his face once he said that, but instinctively glanced off in another direction. “Yeah yeah, you don’t have to act like it’s such a big deal.”
“It sort of is, though. I mean, you aren’t exactly one to go out of your way and give people things like this all the time…”
“Yeah, well… felt like being generous today, I guess,” he remarked bluntly. And with that, he turned to make his leave.
“Ah- Goodbye! A-And thank you for the gift!” MeQuot shouted from behind as Devesto walked away, but he didn’t say anything back. He didn’t even show any sign of acknowledgement. He was entirely focused on rushing to get out of there as fast as possible until he was finally by himself again.
Alright, well that was… weird, but not entirely a bad kind of weird. If anything, he honestly felt kind of good after having done that. Almost like a sense of accomplishment, even. He’d succeeded in what he’d sought out to do, and the fact that it had made MeQuot as happy as it did was oddly pleasant to him.
Even though he was alone now, a heavy, warm feeling still lingered in his chest. The image of MeQuot with that stuffed animal remained clear in his mind, and the longer he thought about it, the more prominent that feeling grew. His hands were shaking slightly, and he could feel his heart beating noticeably faster than normal. Was he sick? Was he just imagining things? What could be the cause of it all…?
…
Allergies, probably.
