Chapter 1: Kidd

Chapter Text

Kidd blinked the sleep out of his eyes, watching as the sun poured into his bedroom. He groaned, running his hand through his hair, then back down over his eyes. Right on par, his alarm blasted into his ear. He weakly felt around for it on his bedside drawer, not bothering to even look over. Once he felt it, he hit the top of it, and the alarm quickly turned off. He sighed, mentally preparing himself for the day, before he swung his legs over his bed and stood up. He walked over to his closet, examining the clothes on the hangers and pants stacked below.

He eventually decided on something basic, a blue and white striped polo shirt, plus basic black pants. He went over to the mirror he hung on his wall, carefully brushing his brunette hair. He never did really care much for appearances, but looking somewhat presentable was good. He did tend to be a bit snappy towards his peers, but he didn’t hate them by any margin. He just had… a lot to say about them. He grabbed an apple as he finished up, hopefully for a quick breakfast.

He paused for a moment, thinking to himself.

Was he even ready to start another day of college?

He eventually left his room though, exiting the dormitory and making his way to hopefully get outside before the rush. Once he was outside, he took a deep breath, taking a bite of his apple. He quickly began to walk over to the café place he worked at. Didn’t pay particularly much, but he didn’t like any other job on campus. He entered the place, which was mostly empty. His only real coworker was Carla, and their manager only really stopped by every other week. He punched in at the back, and put on a green apron.

He had class in four hours, so he had time to kill. He just really began getting the café ready, doing the usual. He turned over the ‘CLOSED’ sign to read ‘OPEN’, and began sweeping the floors, the barely audible café music playing as he did so. Tch. Not even enough money to fix that. The door opened with a jingle as he saw Carla enter.

“Hey there, Kidd.” She said, walking by him to get to the back, hitting the back of his head playfully as she did.

“Hey, Carla.” He sighed, voice monotone as ever, but he was used to the other’s antics by now.

He continued sweeping as Carla hopefully punched herself in and did her job. It was a bit slow there at times, but it was better than defeating mutant versions of his classmates. Cindy eventually entered, looking at Kidd, her boyfriend. The blonde waved a flyer in front of Kidd’s face.

“Look!” She said excitedly, smirking slightly in pride. He took it from her, reading over it.

“A dance?” He asked, arching a brow.

“Yes! At our old high school.” She said. “It’s in two weeks!”

Kidd didn’t particularly feel a strong urge to go, but Cindy wouldn’t even ask him anyways, just simply force him.

“I’m going to look so pretty in a new dress! You’ll buy me one, right?” She asked, fixing her hair from her reflection in the window.

“Cindy, I don’t know. Aren’t dresses expensive? I’m not exactly getting paid much.” Kidd said, a bit tired of his girlfriend’s antics.

“I don’t want to date a man who can’t afford everything I ask for! We’re breaking up. I need a rich guy! I’m a pretty lady, I deserve someone my level!” She left after that, arms crossed.

He blinked, but didn’t seem surprised. He just sighed deeply and got back to work. He settled behind the counter, leaning his head on his hand.

After a bit, he saw Felix and Ted walk in. Still dressed in their fancy collared shirts and ties. They approached him.

“Venti mocha cookie Frappuccino with 2%, 6 pumps mocha, caramel and mocha drizzle, extra whip, cookie crumble, praline topping, dark choc curls 2 pumps toasted, white mocha sugar cookie topping 4 pumps dark caramel ex caramel crunch light apple drizzle 3 pumps frap roast 9 java chip scoops double blended and cinnamon powder.” Felix said, not leaving any room for discussion.

Kidd blinked slowly, trying to commit that to memory. “And you?” He looked at Ted.

“…Tea?” Ted said nervously, a bit intimidated by his brother’s order. Kidd sighed.

“What type?” Kidd asked again.

“…hot..?” Ted stammered.

Kidd just groaned internally and wrote down their names in two cups, before going to make their drinks. The twins walked to the side to wait, and Kidd tried to be a little fast, even if there were no other customers.

After a while, with the majority of the time being spent on Felix’s drink, he finished the drinks, placing Ted’s down first, as inevitably, he finished the tea first. Ted quickly grabbed his, thankful despite his lack of description of what he wanted. He handed Felix’s straight to him, their hands brushing against each other as Felix reached for it. For a moment, neither one moved.

Kidd’s deep brown eyes stared into Felix’s icy blue ones. They held that gaze awkwardly for a moment. Kidd felt strangely warm. He studied the other’s face, practically lost for a moment. Ted’s voice broke the silence.

“Felix?” Ted said. Felix quickly took the cup from Kidd.

“Let’s go.” Felix said sharply, yet a hint of uncertainty was in his voice, like he wanted to stay longer. Kidd watched the twins go, more specifically, Felix.

How could such a cold and heartless man like Felix make him feel this way?
