Work Text:
"Gunwook-ah, have you heard the news? They say Mr. Seok's son, Matthew, is coming back from abroad to take over the vineyard in a few days!"
Gunwook furrowed his brow as he woke from a light nap on the small couch in his workroom in the afternoon while his mother's voice pulled him awake. He had already heard the news a few days earlier when Mr. Seok called him personally.
Gunwook works as the head chef at the vineyard owned by the Seok family. He had grown up in the small town of Yeongcheon. His mother works as the Seok's housekeeper, so he had been living here ever since his family moved from Osan for work after his father passed away. He was eleven years old at the time. The Seok family were kind people and had even supported his studies financially when he went to Seoul to study veterinary medicine.
After finishing his studies, instead of continuing to work in Seoul or opening his own veterinary clinic, he chose to return to Seok's vineyard in Yeongcheon to help manage it as the Seoks grew older. Even though Mr. Seok only visited occasionally, he still held most of the decision-making power and was an expert in negotiations and expanding the market, while Gunwook focused more on the work in the fields.
"Oh? Is that so?" Gunwook asked indifferently.
"What's so strange about letting their only son manage his own estate now?"
His mother lightly slapped his chest. "I remember you didn't like him when you were kids, right? Mr. Seok adores you like his own son, and I don't want him to see the two of you not getting along, so please behave when his son comes back. I also think he wants you to train him around here."
Gunwook crossed his arms. "He's coming back from abroad, so I'm not sure if he wants to toil in the sun like us.. does Mr. Seok want me to teach him everything?" he sighed softly.
"Actually, once he masters everything, it might be a good chance for me to finally pursue my dream of exploring many places and gaining lots of experience everywhere. I could even open my own clinic one day. I'm only here because you refused to leave, even though I can take care of both of us. Of course, I want to repay the Seoks' kindness, but as I get older, I need to find my own path."
"I know, and I'm always proud of you," his mother said, patting his shoulder.
"On top of being a vet, you're also a gardener, a winemaker, and an accountant who helps manage this business. It would be a huge loss for them, but Mr. Seok would understand your decision. I also want you to follow your own path one day."
Gunwook smiled. "I wonder how his son looks now. It's been so long since I last saw him."
Though the memory was faint, the image of a cute, fox-eyed teenager with a beautiful smile remained clear. He had pale skin and an almost angelic face. The kids in town used to tease him for being "girly" or "pretty", yet back then, he had been taller than Gunwook. Despite being three years older, Gunwook had never really called him "Hyung". They had only known each other for two months before Matthew left to study in Vancouver, the Seok family's hometown, while his parents stayed in Korea to manage the business. It must have been lonely, going abroad at just fourteen.
Wait.. how old would he be now? Thirty? Yes, that sounded right, since Gunwook was now twentyseven.
His mother always told him not to be angry with Matthew back then, but Gunwook never was. He just remembered a boy who acted a bit spoiled. He wondered if he was still that same "prince" from his childhood. How much had he changed? What had his life been like over there?
༘˚⋆𐙚。࣪˖ ִֶָ🍇་༘⋆☘︎.˚⋆˚。⋆˚
The sun was quickly disappearing behind the horizon. Gunwook stopped his work in the fields and instructed the workers to do the same. The sky shifted from brilliant light to a murky hue in less than half an hour.
On his way back from the vineyard, he passed several stalls when he suddenly heard noises coming from the chicken coop. He quickened his pace to check what was going on. As soon as he arrived, he saw a stranger running around, desperately trying to escape the chickens pecking at him while attempting to climb over the fence.
"What are you doing?" Gunwook shouted.
"Ahhh—!"
The stranger slipped on a wooden plank and nearly fell, but Gunwook reacted instantly. He lunged forward and grabbed him by the waist, lifting him up like a mother cat carrying a kitten.
He really does look like a kitten, Gunwook thought.
The stranger coughed, startled in surprise by the sudden grab. At least it was better than cracking his head on the dirt.
"Sh*T," he hissed.
Was he cursing at me? After I just saved him? Gunwook frowned. No "thank you" no "sorry for the trouble."
Once the stranger regained his footing, Gunwook let him go. The man adjusted his expensive clothes and glared at him with round, dark brown eyes.
"What the hell is wrong with you?" the stranger snapped.
"I should ask you the same. Sorry for startling you, but outsiders aren't allowed to play here."
"I wasn't playing," the man replied, his voice steadier now. He lifted his chin slightly. "I was just going to take an egg because I was hungry, but the moment I tried to pick one up, they all started attacking me!"
"You can't do that. Did you even ask for permission?"
"I am the owner here. Do I really need to ask anyone?" he sulked.
"Oh," Gunwook hummed, scanning him from head to toe. Those clothes, that hair, those features.. he had never seen this person around here before.
"Matthew..? Hyung?"
At the sound of his name, Matthew stiffened and crossed his arms. He was smaller than Gunwook, though by normal standards, he was well-built. His shirt clung to his frame, revealing toned muscles. He looked like a grown man now. Matthew's face was just as angelic as before, only slightly more mature. And his height? He hadn't grown an inch.
"I'm so sorry, but don't they sell milk abroad?" Gunwook grinned.
"Hey, you!"
"My name is Gunwook," he said quickly, not meaning to mock him, but to reintroduce himself. "I mean.. sorry, I didn't mean it like that. You just.. look exactly like you used to."
"Sorry I didn't grow up to be a giant," Matthew shot back. "Oh, Gunwook? So you're still here."
"I'm not that big myself. There are workers here taller than me."
"Still as ill-mannered as ever."
"I'm impressed you remembered me so quickly, without having to think about it." Gunwook said in surprise.
"How could anyone forget someone like you? Cowardly and rude."
"You studied abroad for years, and the best you can do is throw insults? I expected I'd at least hear some foreign language that I wouldn't even be able to translate."
"You brat!" Matthew growled.
To Gunwook, Matthew wasn't intimidating at all. If anything, he looked like a hissing kitten.
"Let's go back to the house," Gunwook said, turning toward the path. "It's getting late. I'm sure my mother has already prepared dinner for you. There's no need to steal eggs from the coop."
༘˚⋆𐙚。࣪˖ ִֶָ🍇་༘⋆☘︎.˚⋆˚。⋆˚
As soon as they arrived at the main entrance, Gunwook's mother came running and said that Mr. Seok wanted to see him. Gunwook nodded and turned to Matthew.
"Let's go listen together. What he wants to discuss with me is probably about you anyway."
"And why would I have anything to do with you?"
"Everything. Because you're going to manage this vineyard as the owner. I've been managing it in your place for your father all this time. That means I have to be the one to train you."
"But my father said he would teach me." Matthew furrowed his brows.
"Your father has many responsibilities. He'll teach you some things when he can. It took me a while to learn from him too since it depended on his schedule. That's why it took me years to really get the hang of it. If you want to learn fast, you'll have to listen to both me and your father." Gunwook paused to watch his reaction. "Anyway, come talk to him with me. If you have any objections, you can raise them then."
Matthew's gaze softened slightly. Gunwook gestured for him to lead the way. Matthew walked off with his head held high while Gunwook breathed a sigh of relief.
"There you are. Gunwook and Matthew."
Mr. Seok, a dignified middle-aged man, greeted them the moment the door opened.
"Where did you two run into each other?"
"At the chicken coop." Gunwook replied.
"Ah, right. Matthew was probably excited to look around."
Gunwook nodded. His behavior earlier made much more sense now.
"Gunwook, you remember Matthew Hyung, don't you?"
"I didn't at first, but after talking for a bit, it came back to me."
"Right, you were quite small back then. Maybe in sixth grade." Mr. Seok clasped his hands on the table. "Sit, let's eat together."
"It wouldn't be appropriate."
"What? Just come and sit here and Matthew, do you remember your Dongsaeng Gunwook?"
"I do."
"Good. It'll make getting settled much easier. Let's talk while we eat."
Matthew didn't reply, but he pulled out a chair and sat down.
"While you were at boarding school and later in Canada, I had Gunwook look after our vineyard. During the expansion, I had to negotiate with many clients and didn't have time for the field operations. Gunwook has practically been running things for two years now. I think it's time you took over, as we agreed."
"Yes, I'll do that."
"For the first two years, I want you to learn the fieldwork from Gunwook. After that, we'll hire someone trustworthy to manage it, and you can transition into taking over the business side from me. By then, the full decision-making power will be yours."
"When we first talked about this, you said you would teach me."
"Matthew, you know how swamped I am. Gunwook is talented. He'll definitely be a better teacher than I would."
Matthew looked at Gunwook dead in the eye. His thin, bright lips looked like they were about to launch an insult, but he bit it back.
"Gunwook is a lovely person. All the workers like him."
"But—"
"It'll only take a year or two to learn," Gunwook interjected. "Matthew Hyung doesn't have to work in the fields every day like I do. It might be tough at first, but after that, you'll just need to do periodic inspections to make sure no one is slacking. Managing a large group of people means dealing with both the good and the bad. You can probably apply what you learned abroad better than I can. It won't be too exhausting."
"I'm not afraid of hard work," Matthew snapped, putting down his spoon.
Matthew's father let out a hearty laugh. "Goodness, already fighting? Don't take Gunwook's words to heart, Matthew."
"He has no manners."
"Don't be angry with him. He didn't know you dislike being spoken to like that." Despite coddling his son, Mr. Seok winked at Gunwook, signaling for him to indulge the young master's whims.
Matthew, though older than Gunwook, acted like a child as he glared at him before picking up his spoon again.
"I'll let it slide this once."
"Does that mean you'll let him teach you?" Mr. Seok asked.
"Let me think about it overnight," Matthew replied coldly with a sigh.
It looked like this was going to be the toughest assignment Mr. Seok had ever given Gunwook.
The morning air at the vineyard was filled with the sounds of nature. The air turned chilly in the early hours before dawn. Gunwook finished cleaning a few things in the greenhouse before the sun had fully risen and returned once the first strong rays of daylight appeared.
As soon as he got back to the house, he found Mr. Seok greeting him with a smile, a coffee cup in hand while peacefully eating breakfast at the dining table.
"Hey, Gunwook. Have some breakfast first, then go wake up Matthew. If you go up now, he'll definitely be cranky."
"Yes." Gunwook nodded.
"I have an appointment with a partner later. I'm hoping to get our wine stocked in his plaza. After that, I'm heading straight to Seoul. I'll leave Matthew in your hands."
"Is he... okay with that?"
"It shouldn't be a problem. I went up to talk to him again late last night. He seemed a bit softer than he was yesterday evening," Mr. Seok replied with a small smile, looking unbothered.
"When will you be back?"
The middle-aged man shook his head and put down his coffee. "Not sure. There are too many rivals pushing into the market right now. Work's going to be heavy for a while."
"Will things be alright here?" Gunwook asked.
The owner of the vineyard sighed.
"I really hope everything works out. To be honest, I want to teach him many things myself too since I haven't had much time to look after Matthew. Fortunately, he's a decent person at heart, even if he's quietly stubborn. I want to teach him everything, but... you know how busy I am. So, Gunwook, you might get exhausted, but can I entrust him to you?"
"You should get some rest too, Mr. Seok. I think Matthew Hyung would rather spend time with his father."
"If I rest, who will carry this on? Do you want it, Gunwook? I'll give the vineyard to you."
"No thanks," Gunwook replied with a smile. He always joked like that.
"I know. You have your own dreams, right? I can't keep you here forever. Just help my son become a bit more professional so you can finally go and find what you actually love to do without this burden."
"I'm happy to help you, sir. I don't see it as a burden," Gunwook replied.
"Then help me with one more thing," Mr. Seok said kindly. "Take care of Matthew. I'm asking this as a favor. He graduated abroad and has been pampered his whole life. He has a high ego and acts tough, but he's not that hard to talk to."
Gunwook lowered his gaze to his plate. With Mr. Seok asking like that, he had absolutely no way to refuse.

After Gunwook finished washing the dishes, he went upstairs to wake up Matthew, who was still in his room. The fair-skinned man from yesterday looked pale in his sleep, his dark brown hair messy. He scowled like a toddler the moment he saw him.
"What?"
"I'm here to wake you up."
"At eight in the morning?"
"It's already late, Hyung."
The door almost slammed into Gunwook's face, but he managed to catch it with his hand. Matthew clicked his tongue in annoyance and walked back to his bed.
Gunwook followed him inside and opened the white curtains, letting the light fill the room. Matthew rolled away and used a large pillow to shield his eyes.
"Matthew, please get up."
"Don't bother me."
"If we go to the vineyard at noon, the sun will be scorching. It's better to go now and come back by ten-thirty."
"Tomorrow," he grumbled. "I had a long day yesterday."
Gunwook began pulling the blanket off him. Matthew tried to tug it back, but he was no match for Gunwook's strength. His arms were so thin that Gunwook could practically wrap one hand around his entire wrist.
"What is your problem?! I said I'm sleeping!"
"You're acting like a child. You'll be thirty-one next year."
"Who are you calling a child?!" This time, he sat upright, his eyes no longer sleepy but filled with pure spite.
"I wouldn't dare, Hyung."
"You just said it!"
"In that case, please get up and shower. I'll prepare breakfast so you can go out and work like a real adult."
The vineyard owner's son ground his teeth until his jaw tightened. He swung his legs off the bed and stormed into the bathroom.
Gunwook folded the blanket and fixed the pillows before heading out, mumbling to himself.
"Little kitty."

The weather was too hot today. Matthew wore sunglasses, but sweat still formed along his hairline. His pale cheeks turned bright red and looked painful, yet stubbornly, he stayed quiet.
"There are many varieties of grapes categorized by regions in France. We mainly grow two varieties: Shiraz and Chardonnay. Shiraz is used for red wine. It has a floral aroma and a sweet, fruity taste."
"Eighty percent of our vineyard grows Shiraz grapes. Some are sold fresh, and some are used to make wine. I'll take you to the winery another day."
"And the rest is Chardonnay?" Matthew asked.
"Yes. The other twenty percent is Chardonnay for white wine. We grow less of it because the market prefers red."
Matthew nodded in understanding, walking behind Gunwook and tearing off a grape leaf out of boredom.
"Do you want to rest? We can come back later if it's too hot. You might get sick."
"If everyone else can stay out here, why can't I?" Matthew snapped.
"Fine. Let's continue. The challenge of planting French varieties in Korea is that, much like in Europe, we can only harvest once a year."
"Grapes don't like the cold?"
"No. Grapes need a warm climate. The grape cycle starts in April when the ground thaws and takes about five to six months before harvest, right before the autumn frost arrives. Unlike Europe, the biggest risk here is the summer monsoon season in July and August. If there's heavy rain and high humidity before harvest, the grapes can swell, crack, or develop fungal diseases."
Matthew nodded and reached out to pluck more grapes just to play with them.
Gunwook immediately cut in. "Please, stay still."
"Come on, just a little bit. Walking around and listening to all this is boring as hell."
"You're going to be 'bored' for a long time if you keep destroying the crops every time you're bored, we'll lose half the vineyard," Gunwook said flatly.
Matthew pouted. "You're so young, why are you so picky and naggy?"
"I'm not nagging." Gunwook looked back at him. "Are you bored that much? Let's stop here and just head back."
"Are we coming back out this afternoon?"
"I think that's enough for today. The sun is too strong too. You should rest at home so you don't get sick."
"If you're coming back out, I'm coming with you."
Matthew's voice was firm as he pressed his lips together and added, "I don't want people around here saying I'm acting like a child."
"I won't say it again, Hyung. That's already enough for today. We can come back tomorrow."
"No.. I.. Am.. Coming..Out.. With.. You."
Matthew emphasized every word so clearly that Gunwook could only sigh.
"Hyung, Let's stop here and head back. I won't be coming out too, promise."
Did Mr. Seok say he was easy to handle?
That was a lie if he'd ever heard one.
༘˚⋆𐙚。࣪˖ ִֶָ🍇་༘⋆☘︎.˚⋆˚。⋆˚
The next morning, Gunwook woke up in his usual rhythm. He followed his usual routine: sweeping leaves, giving instructions to the workers about the day, and checking on the grapes around the vineyard. By the time he finished feeding the chickens and cows, the sky was beginning to brighten. He bet Matthew hadn't even woken up yet.
After arriving back at the house, he cheerfully whistled as he headed upstairs to seek out Matthew. However, his door was closed this time. Gunwook remembered that Matthew hadn't been this protective of his space yesterday. Perhaps he didn't want to be woken up? But that seemed unlikely, given how hard he'd been trying to act like a mature adult.
Gunwook knocked politely a few times. There was no answer, just a disgruntled groan that signaled that Matthew was in a bad mood. He hadn't even done anything yet, but it already sounded like Matthew took his presence near the door as provocation.
"Matthew? If you're awake, please open up. I'll help tidy the bed, and we can head down for breakfast. Later, I'll take you to the winery out back."
"I'm not going," he shouted back. "Leave the food at the door. I'll get it when I'm hungry."
"Are you feeling unwell?"
"Mhm. I just want to lie here."
"Shall I come in and check on you?"
Silence. No unlocking sound, and no footsteps on the floor.
"Matthew Hyung."
"Go away. I don't want to see anyone."
Gunwook stopped pestering him and walked downstairs to the central key cabinet. He didn't want to invade his privacy, but if he was going to be this stubborn, Gunwook had to use his own methods.
"What are you doing, Gunwook?"
"Your 'darling' won't open the door. I'm worried he's sick."
"Should I go?"
"I'll handle it, Mom. You can rest. I've got this."
"Don't provoke him!" Gunwook's mother reminded him again. He hummed in response as he pulled out the key.
"I understand. Now excuse me."
Gunwook went back upstairs and quietly unlocked the door. The moment it swung open, the figure huddled on the bed immediately yanked a blanket over his head.
"Why are you here?"
"How are you feeling? Should I get you something?"
"You aren't a doctor. Stop meddling."
"Actually, the people around here call me 'Doctor Gunwook,'" he said, leaving out the fact that his patients were usually four-legged. Matthew sat up and threw the blanket aside.
"Stop it. I don't want to talk. Get out."
"What's got you so grumpy?" Gunwook asked, approaching the six-foot bed. Matthew flopped back down, burying himself again. "Is it a secret?"
"Stop being a nuisance."
"When was your last period?"
"You brat! You're so annoying!"
Matthew bolted upright again, his small hands pushing against Gunwook's chest. But a city boy's strength was no match for a farmhand's. Not only was Gunwook unmoved, but he caught both his wrists within seconds. Matthew's eyes were still fierce, but the reason he was hiding was now clear: dark, scorched patches across his cheeks and forehead.
"Does it hurt?"
Matthew looked like he wanted to tell him to mind his own business, but instead he just bit his lip hard, trying to twist his wrists free. Of course, he didn't stand a chance.
"Stay out of the sun today. You can come out with me another time. I'll go look for something we can use to treat this."
"Can you just... not?"
"Matthew," Gunwook said with a weary sigh. "How long are you going to hold onto this pride? No one thinks you're being soft. Sunburn is normal. I warned you before."
"You're just going to rub it in, aren't you?"
"Stop making assumptions. You might dislike me, but you aren't important enough for me to spend my time dwelling on your mistakes just to kick you while you're down."
His gaze softened, but Matthew still looked furious. If anything, he looked even angrier. Gunwook truly didn't know what he had done to make him hate him this much.
"I know you aren't happy having a 'low-ranking' mentor like me, but please endure me for a bit. I'm trying my best to endure you, too."
"What exactly do you have to 'endure' about me?"
If he used every tree in the forest to make paper, it still wouldn't be enough to list all the things he had to endure about Matthew. He tried to stay positive, but his temperament was exhausting. Why couldn't he just be easy for once?
"Fine. My fault. Regardless, the redness will fade in a day. I remember using aloe vera before. I'll look into the proper steps."
"I have my own creams."
"Try my way first. If it doesn't work, use your cream or use both. Stay inside today. I'll bring your food up."
"I expected as much," Matthew replied.
Gunwook looked at his unevenly colored cheeks and felt a bit of pity. Matthew had incredibly good skin. Hiis parents were fair, but he was on another level. He'd never seen a man care so much about his complexion.
"Go wash your face. It'll make you feel fresh. I'll bring breakfast and eat with you."
"Who said I wanted you to eat with me?"
"No one but I want to eat with you," Gunwook replied.
Honestly, flattery wasn't his thing, but if it kept the peace and silenced Matthew's constant protesting, he'd keep doing it.
After they ate breakfast, Gunwook went out to handle some business in the fields while Matthew stayed in his room. The sun hadn't even set when he dragged his sweat-soaked body back home just to check on Matthew again but as soon as he arrived, he noticed the teak door was locked again. He knocked, and after a moment, the knob finally turned.
He spotted Matthew sitting at the desk with his laptop open. The white curtains were pulled back, letting in enough natural light that he didn't need the lamps on.
"Looking at the accounts?"
"Mhm. Trying to understand them."
"So hardworking," Gunwook remarked. He'd expected Matthew to sleep the day away. "Any parts you don't understand? I can explain."
"Do you do all of this?"
"What?"
"The field work, the winery, the monthly accounts..."
"Oh. We have a winery manager. She handles her side and sends me the figures, then I handle the fertilizer orders, sales, all that, and compile the final report for Mr. Seok every month."
"When do you find time to rest, working this hard?" Matthew looked curious.
Was the world really turning upside down today? Matthew was asking after him with genuine concern?
Gunwook scratched his head, feeling a bit awkward.
"Being out in the fields is my rest. I don't like numbers much... they give me a headache. Anyway, how are you feeling?"
"What, my face? Still not better."
Matthew sounded frustrated.
Gunwook glanced at the bowl of crushed aloe vera. It hadn't been touched at all.
"Why haven't you tried the aloe? It's great for the skin."
"I smelled it. It's too... grassy."
"No, it's good. I thought you wanted to get better so you could go back to the vineyard."
Matthew shot him a glare before turning away. His cheeks were still scorched, even more visibly than this morning.
"Does it burn a lot?"
"None of your business."
"Go wash your face. I'll help you apply it."
"No. It smells."
"Can't you handle it? Or are you just looking for an excuse to stay inside?"
Matthew glared at him again, shoved his chair back, and marched into the bathroom. Gunwook looked around the room. Everything was perfectly tidy. On the laptop screen, several Excel sheets were open, including reports he had sent to his father. Matthew would probably catch on quickly.
The bathroom door opened. Matthew now changed in a fitted T-shirt with a small towel draped over his shoulders, his face still damp.
"Sit down."
"I can do it myself."
"I want to help."
Matthew looked at Gunwook with a confused expression. It was funny that he could worry about others, but the moment someone did something nice for him, he looked completely lost.
Gunwook smiled and pressed Matthew's shoulders down until he sat on the edge of the bed. Gunwook took the bowl of aloe vera and knelt before him, gently dabbing the herb onto his dark cheeks.
"Does it hurt?"
Matthew's skin was so soft that Gunwook worried his hands would leave marks if he pressed too hard. Matthew shook his head, his dark brown eyes darting back and forth.
"Tell me if it hurts."
"Mhm."
They caught each other's gaze a few times before quickly looking away. The scorched skin felt warm to the touch, but Matthew didn't complain.
"Wait twenty minutes. Once it dries, wash it off. We'll go down for dinner, and afterward, we can try some cucumber slices."
Matthew didn't argue back. After Gunwook finished speaking, he stood up.
"I'll go wait downstairs."
"But..."
"Get some fresh air, Hyung. It's dark, no one will notice your face." Gunwook gave him a gentle smile. "I'll take you for a walk around the house."
Matthew nodded.
He is actually nice huh? he thought.

The sunburn had gotten better after two days, so Gunwook started teaching Matthew a few things again.
Things like how to pick the grapes properly so they wouldn't get damaged, how to water them, and how to feed the animals on the farm as well. Honestly, Matthew didn't have to do all of this, but he was stubborn and wanted to learn everything. He also slowly learned how to document the numbers.
Lately, they had been getting along remarkably well. Even Gunwook's mother and a few of the workers were baffled by the peaceful coexistence between Matthew and Gunwook.
They even pulled him aside to ask what he could have possibly said to stop Matthew from throwing tantrums. In truth, Gunwook hadn't done anything at all. He was just living his usual life. He still teased Matthew occasionally, but instead of snapping back, Matthew would just go quiet. It had reached a point where Gunwook was the one looking for trouble, whereas before he was always the one backing down. It was strange, but Matthew seemed to be adjusting well to life there, especially to Gunwook. Perhaps his earlier behavior was just a way of getting attention from someone who had been spoiled his whole life.
Now that a couple of weeks had passed and his father still hadn't come back, Matthew was no longer just bored. He had started to quietly accept it. He was still moody and bossy, but he didn't have those loud outbursts anymore.
"The grapes we grow need pruning," Gunwook explained.
"If we don't do it, they won't grow well and the harvest will be small. We prune for the first time ten months after planting, and we stop watering seven days in advance. The branches should look like this: mature and brown. Cut them to about a foot long. Here, you try."
"Like this?"
"Yes."
Gunwook looked down at Matthew's small hands. His fingertips had grown a bit calloused lately, and his skin wasn't as bright as when he first arrived, though he was still fair."
"If it's a young branch, leave it a bit longer."
Matthew nodded. The straw hat on his head started to slip because the drawstring under his chin had loosened.
"Let me tie that for you."
"No need."
"It's getting in the way," Gunwook said, turning Matthew toward him and untying the string.
Matthew felt his heart skip a beat.
"Want to take a break?"
"I'm fine," Matthew replied, turning his face away.
Gunwook took out his handkerchief and began wiping the sweat from Matthew's forehead. He usually carried it for utility, and since he hadn't used it on himself yet today, he figured it was clean enough. To surprise, Matthew didn't recoil in disgust. At least, not as much as usual.
"It's so muggy today," Gunwook muttered.
"Good. It's too hot."
"Hyung, if you're tired, just go rest. You don't have to do everything like I do. Learning the basics is enough for now."
Matthew's face immediately crumpled into a pout. "If you can do it, why can't I? I'm older than you."
"There are many things you can do that I can't," Gunwook replied. "Don't push yourself too hard."
"I'm not pushing myself," Matthew insisted.
"Why are you so stubborn?"
Matthew looked like he was on the verge of heatstroke. Despite his prickliness, Gunwook didn't have the heart to keep teasing him.
"This is my vineyard. My family's. Why should I have to rely on you for everything?"
"Matthew..."
"I don't want to be in your debt forever," Matthew added, still pouting.
Gunwook finally understood why Matthew had been so quiet and less argumentative lately. It was for a rather simple, silly reason.
"Listen to me, Seok Matthew," Gunwook said firmly. "Neither you nor your father owe me anything. This vineyard would survive without me. An owner doesn't have to do everything themselves. They hire people, and I am simply one of those employees. If anyone is in debt, it's me. Mr. Seok paid for my education and gave my mother a job, a home and even took care of her when I was still young. I'm the one who relies on him. What I'm doing now isn't to put you in my debt. It's my way of paying back mine."
He paused, looking at the older man. "Do you feel pressured watching me work? Are you stressed by how things are here?"
"It has nothing to do with you," Matthew hissed back.
"Call me nosy all you want, I don't care. You're not my boss yet. Mr. Seok is. And my job right now is to take care of you."
They locked eyes. Matthew's gaze was as proud and defiant as ever.
"Take your time to learn," Gunwook added. "It took me a decade to get where I am."
"What nonsense. I won't need ten years to kick you out of here." Matthew snapped.
Gunwook sighed softly. "Do you hate me so much that you can't wait to get me out of your sight?"
Matthew didn't answer, but his eyes wavered. He pressed his lips together and looked away.
"I thought we were finally becoming friends."
"Who would want to be friends with you?"
"Well, you've been quite peaceful these past few days."
"That's because I'm absorbing everything so I can fire you faster!"
Even though his words were sharp, Gunwook couldn't help but smile. Being hounded around by a 'kitten' like this was a bit irritating, but mostly just fun.
"Even if you don't like my face.. I like you." Gunwook said simply.
From the corner of his eye, Gunwook watched as Matthew's cheeks turned red, followed quickly by the tips of his ears.
"Come on. If you want to work, I'll keep teaching you but tell me if it gets too much. I'm worried about you," Gunwook said.
Gunwook realized that the nicer he was, the quieter Matthew became. He didn't argue or snap back anymore. He just stood there, cheeks and ears still red.
He's cute.
Gunwook couldn't help but feel fond of the stubborn heir.
By early evening, the rain began to pour, just as he had predicted. Gunwook hurried through the wet grass while the rain drummed heavily against the roof. A bolt of lightning cracked across the sky, and by the time he reached the main house, he was completely soaked. The lights flickered before suddenly going out, leaving only the dim emergency lights on. The house was quiet, making him wonder if Matthew had already gone safely back to his room after they separated that afternoon.
"Matthew Hyung," Gunwook called out as he knocked on the door the moment he arrived upstairs. Matthew's voice gave him permission to come in. In the dim emergency light, he could see the silhouette of Matthew sitting on the bed with his knees pulled to his chest.
"The power went out, so I came to check if everything was okay."
"Mhm." Matthew nodded.
"Alright, I'll go to sleep now. If you need anything.."
"Sleep here," Matthew said, shifting to one side. The king-sized bed was large enough for two men.
"Won't that be uncomfortable?" Gunwook asked, furrowing his brows.
"Are you... uncomfortable?"
Matthew's voice sounded almost pleading like a kitten that had lost its claws. He didn't directly ask Gunwook to stay, but the way he sounded was different from his usual self.
"If that's what you want, then I'll stay."
Gunwook climbed onto the bed and adjusted the spare pillow to give Matthew more space. He glanced at how Matthew stared out the window. The flashes of lightning reflected in his eyes.
"You don't like the rain?"
"I only hate it at night."
"I don't like it either," Gunwook sighed. Matthew turned to him, his eyes full of questions.
"Are you scared?"
"Not really... but something happened before."
"Here... if you're scared, hold my hand."
Gunwook watched as Matthew opened his palm between them. He reached out and placed his hand against Matthew's, hoping to comfort this stubborn kitten, who was probably more scared than he wanted to admit. Matthew's fingers immediately tightened around his hand.
"Don't be afraid," Matthew murmured as he moved even closer, until Gunwook could smell the scent of his shampoo with every breath.

The next morning, Gunwook woke up a little later than usual. The air after a night of rain was chilly, almost cold, but the warmth of the person pressed against him made it easy to stay asleep. A pale wrist was draped over his waist, Matthew's head resting on his chest, their legs tangled together. Matthew was hugging him like a pillow, breathing steadily in deep sleep.
He's thirty, yet he acts like such a child sometimes. One day he's fine, the next he's a complete nightmare. Who could possibly keep up with him?
Gunwook thought back to how they had ended up in this tangled position. They had started by simply holding hands, but every time thunder cracked through the sky, Matthew's body reacted automatically. Even in his sleep, he would reach for whatever was closest to him. That just happened to be Gunwook. He wrapped himself around him tightly, trembling even with his eyes closed, occasionally letting out soft sobs before calming down again.
Now that the sky was finally clear, Gunwook carefully untangled Matthew's limbs from around him, replaced himself with a pillow, and quietly slipped out of bed to start the day.
Because of the heavy rain last night, the grape leaves hanging on the bamboo trellises looked fresh and bright green. Some of the ripe fruit had unfortunately been damaged, but the farm itself looked refreshed after the overnight rain. Gunwook walked through the vineyard and entered the fermentation house. He flipped through the report, reviewed some paperwork, and stayed there for a few hours before finally heading back outside.
"Gunwookie."
It was the first time Matthew had ever called him that. It wasn't especially sweet or polite, but it still caught him by surprise. Matthew came running from the house with a bright smile, looking happier than usual after waking up.
"Hyung, walk slowly. The ground is muddy."
"What are you doing?"
"Trimming the bushes. Why are you here? You could've rested today. You didn't seem to sleep well last night."
"It's fine. Are you busy?"
"Well... no. Is something wrong?"
"Can you take me into town?" Matthew walked closer and lightly shook Gunwook's arm. His lips curled into a small smile. It wasn't a full smile, but he was obviously in a good mood. "Please take me. I don't know this city at all. Is it far? How far is it?"
"Calm down," Gunwook said with a smile. Seeing Matthew's sparkling eyes and childlike excitement, it was hard to believe the man in front of him was already thirty years old. Three years older than him.
"Let me shower first, then I'll come get you. Go wait for me in the living room."
Matthew nodded rapidly, his soft hair fluttering over his forehead.
Gunwook couldn't help but smile. "And don't run. You'll slip."
"I know, I know! I've been walking longer than you. I'm not going to fall."
"Yes, sir."
The drive into town took about twenty minutes, though they still hadn't reached the mall because of the traffic. Matthew looked out the window while humming along to the music playing in the car.
"I like this song," Matthew suddenly said, swaying his head slightly. It was an R&B song with beautiful but strangely lonely lyrics. "What kind of music do you usually listen to?"
The two of them ended up talking about many things. Their interests, lifestyles, hobbies and laughed together the whole drive into town. It felt strangely natural how well they clicked with each other, even though neither of them had realized it before.
"Were you lonely when you lived overseas alone?"
Matthew shook his head. "I have a best friend from high school. When I moved to Canada, he moved there too. We even went to the same university, so we became really close. Sometimes he still comes over and sleeps at my place."
"Your best friend?"
"Yeah, but he's really busy these days, so he doesn't have much time to hang out with me anymore. Hanbin Hyung. Do you know him?"
Gunwook shook his head.
"You seem to be in a really good mood today."
"Hmm... something like that. I slept well last night."
"But you kept twitching."
"Really? I didn't notice." Matthew leaned back against the seat. "Usually, I wake up in the middle of the night. I guess I still need time to get used to it."
When they finally reached the mall entrance, Gunwook turned the car toward the parking lot. Matthew continued humming softly, talking much more than he normally did.
"Hey, I've been thinking..." Matthew said suddenly. "Should we call a truce? I think it'd be nice if we became friends."
Gunwook raised an eyebrow.
Matthew had been the difficult one from the beginning, so why was he suddenly the one suggesting a truce?
"Besides, you're not actually a bad person."
"I am a good person."
"Fine." Matthew nodded. "You're a little good. I'll be your Hyung from now on.'"
"I'm not really used to that."
"Then get used to it! I'm lowering myself to become your Hyung who looks after you, and you're still being difficult? I might take back my offer to let you be my Dongsaeng."
Gunwook couldn't help bursting into laughter.
"What are you laughing at?" Matthew crossed his arms, his face returning to that familiar grumpy expression.
"Nothing. Umm.. Thank you… Hyung? Don't make that face."
"What face?"
"Your eyebrows are practically touching. You're much cuter when you're in a good mood."
"Don't go around calling people cute!" Matthew's cheeks flushed faintly, noticeable even under the dim lighting. He pursed his lips, clearly embarrassed. "Let's stop by the supermarket too."
"My mom or the workers can buy groceries at the market tomorrow. They're better at choosing fresh ingredients."
"I'm good at it too," Matthew insisted, making Gunwook raise an eyebrow in surprise.
"It was tough living in Vancouver. There weren't many choices, so I had to learn a thing or two. The taste couldn't compare a hundred percent, but it was still okay."
"You like cooking?"
"Depends on my mood."
Judging by his personality, that sounded about right.
At the supermarket, Gunwook grabbed a cart and followed closely behind him. Matthew looked surprisingly skilled as he picked out fresh products with an expertise Gunwook didn't have.
"You know that you're going to make a good husband one day? Your wife will be so lucky to have a husband who helps her pick ingredients."
Matthew stopped moving after hearing Gunwook.
"Umm…"
"Hmm? Did I say something wrong?"
"I… I don't like girls. I like boys, so… I don't think I'll have a wife in the future." Matthew stared at Gunwook with honest eyes.
"Oh." That was the only sound Gunwook could let out at that moment.
"What? Are you homophobic?"
"No. Wait, I mean no, I'm not." Gunwook quickly tried to explain himself, waving his hands in front of him. "I was just surprised that you suddenly started talking about this in the middle of grocery shopping."
"You were the one who started it first! Saying I'd be a great husband later and have a wife… and I thought since we're friends now, I'd just tell you that." Matthew bit his lip after saying it. "But if you're not okay with me being gay, I totally understand."
"Hyung, that's not it. I would never look at you differently because of this and you know what? I'm bisexual myself, so I don't see any problem with boys liking boys."
"Oh." Matthew let out the same sigh Gunwook had earlier. "So you actually like boys too?"
"Well, yes. If they make my heart flutter, then yes." Gunwook looked away shyly.
The conversation ended there, and they continued shopping together. In the end, the shopping bags were so big and heavy that even Gunwook, who never complained, thought it was too much, especially when more than half of it was just kitty snacks. How could he eat so much while having such a small body? Where did all the food even go? Somehow, Gunwook found it cute as he walked toward his car.
"Gunwookie… can I ask you something?" Gunwook caught Matthew glancing at him before he quickly looked somewhere else.
"Yes, of course, Hyung. What is it?"
"Are you single?"
"What??" Gunwook asked loudly.
"Shh, why are you being so loud? I was just asking." Matthew tried to cover Gunwook's mouth.
"I was just curious… you know, you have a good job, a good education, and well… you look kinda okay too, so I thought maybe you were dating someone."
"I look okay?" Gunwook couldn't help but laugh before steadying his voice. "No, I'm not. I dated someone a few years ago, but we broke up."
Matthew hummed in understanding and casually asked, "Why did you break up?"
"Many reasons. You can't force these things. If one person doesn't love you anymore, then no matter how hard you try, the relationship won't survive."
Matthew curled his lips slightly before asking, "Were you together for a long time?"
"Hmm… maybe three years?"
"That's a shame."
"She was older too. Most women want stability in life. Back then, I hadn't even graduated yet, and I planned to work at the vineyard for a long time before moving into my field. Her dream was to have her own clinic, which I couldn't help her achieve at the time."
"Do you like older people?"
Gunwook nodded.
"Umm… can I ask you another thing? People say older people are more… 'experienced' in bed. Is that true?"
Why does Matthew always make him laugh? Gunwook thought.
But when he thought about all his intimate moments, his ears started burning. Still, they weren't as red as the person who had started this conversation in the first place. As soon as Gunwook looked up at him, he almost burst out laughing.
"You really must've slept with them.. right?"
"Hyung, are you trying to trick me into telling you things?"
"Can't I just be curious?"
"You can," Gunwook said, watching Matthew make another grumpy face. "Matthew Hyung… don't tell me you've never…?"
"Of course I have! Don't talk to me like I'm innocent. I'm not bad-looking, and I'm already this old!" Matthew shot back quickly.
"Then why are you blushing?"
"I'm not blushing! Don't talk too much. Just drive me back home."
Gunwook hummed. "Yes, sir," and started the car.
This time, during the ride back, they didn't talk much like they had earlier that day.
Matthew was cute, and such an honest person when it came to his feelings. When he turned around and saw Gunwook walking behind him with a smile, he glared at him to hide the flush on his cheeks.
"Stop looking! Are you crazy? Walking around smiling like that… it's annoying."
"But when you're shy, you're actually pretty cute. Like a cat."
"You brat," Matthew growled. "Shut up."
Gunwook grinned even wider. Matthew was starting to get genuinely annoyed, his face turning sullen again.
"I didn't mean it was a bad thing," Gunwook whispered, just loud enough for Matthew to hear.
Matthew slowed down for a moment, glancing at him from the corner of his eye, before half-walking, half-running away again when Gunwook added another sentence.
"I mean… it's actually really cute."
They agreed to meet again the next day and separated at the front door before Gunwook went to clear out some things in the working room.
A few hours later, after finishing up, he headed back and noticed that the lights in the main living room were still on. Instead of going to his room to wash up, Gunwook headed there instead. It didn't take long for him to spot Matthew slumped over the desk, his head resting on his arms.
"Matthew Hyung." Gunwook called out and lightly tapped his shoulder before pulling him upright. Matthew slowly opened his eyes halfway and lazily pushed himself up.
"How long have you been sleeping here?"
"Ugh…"
"Go sleep in your room properly. Or at least on the sofa."
Matthew nodded before slumping back down. Gunwook sighed softly and lifted him into a bridal carry. After a few steps, he laid him carefully onto the soft sofa surrounded by pillows. Gunwook brushed the long fringe away from Matthew's eyes, but seconds later, Matthew curled onto his side and let his hair fall over his face again.
Seeing this, Gunwook quietly decided to go upstairs to Matthew's room to grab a blanket. When he came back, Matthew had turned toward the back of the sofa, his pillow on the verge of falling. Gunwook adjusted him gently and pulled the blanket up to his neck.
Before leaving to shower, he couldn't help but playfully ruffle his fine, dark brown hair once out of endearment.
"Do all kittens sleep this cutely?"
༘˚⋆𐙚。࣪˖ ִֶָ🍇་༘⋆☘︎.˚⋆˚。⋆˚
The next morning, Gunwook was surprised by how early Matthew was awake. 7:00 in the morning? Seok Matthew? He couldn't believe his eyes when he walked past the living room, the same place he had left Matthew sleeping on the sofa the night before. Now, Matthew was sitting there with his laptop open on the table, eating snacks while going through monthly purchase orders.
"Good morning," Gunwook greeted him.
"Ah, Gunwookie, good morning. Did you carry me here?" Matthew asked, and Gunwook nodded.
"Thank you."
"Did you sleep well? Why are you up so early?"
"I'm still not used to this place, so I can't really sleep. Once I woke up, I couldn't fall back asleep, so here I am trying to be productive," Matthew said without looking up as he rummaged through the messy documents on the table.
"Didn't you live in Canada for years? Why can't you get used to it here too?"
"I had Hanbin Hyung." Gunwook recognized the name immediately. Matthew had mentioned him once before.
"He was always there with me."
"Your friend?"
"Mhm. Why?"
Matthew looked up, and their eyes met for a moment. The cookie crumbs at the corner of his mouth made Gunwook forget what he was going to ask.
"You're such a messy eater, Hyung."
Matthew wiped at his mouth carelessly with the back of his hand, but it only made it worse. Gunwook grabbed a tissue and wiped the crumbs away for him, though he must have been a little too rough because Matthew immediately scowled.
"Ahh."
Gunwook smiled and naturally reached out to ruffle his hair again, but stopped halfway when he realized Matthew was fully awake this time and not a sleepy kitten like last night. He quickly pulled his hand back, bracing himself for the usual complaint but everything went against his expectations.
Instead of shouting, Matthew pressed his lips into a thin line. Their eyes met for a brief second before Matthew looked away like he had just lost a fight. His ears turned red first before the blush slowly spread across his cheeks and down his neck. Gunwook wasn't any better. He could feel his own face heating up too.
Don't tell me
"……"
"Oh..Umm… should we go eat breakfast? Are you hungry?" Gunwook asked, even though Matthew had just been eating cookies and it was barely half past seven.
Matthew only hummed in response.
"Alright, let's go out to the field after that. I'll teach you how to plant."
After their breakfast, both of them immediately set off toward the field.
"Okay," Gunwook said, holding up a grape seed. "First, you have to make enough space in the earth so the roots can grow thoroughly."
Matthew stared at him and nodded. "Got it."
"Then you have to place the seed inside, but not too deep."
"How deep is too deep?"
"Like…If the seed thinks it'll never see sunlight again, then it's too deep."
Matthew stared at him with a death glare. "That explanation is terrible."
Gunwook laughed and carefully demonstrated the process by using the small shovel to loosen the earth before placing the seed down carefully. Matthew watched every movement closely, his eyes following Gunwook's hands with full concentration.
"Then after that," Gunwook continued, "You cover it lightly like this." He pushed the soil back over the seed gently. "And press it down a little so it stays secure."
Matthew nodded again. "Okay, got it."
Gunwook handed him the shovel. "Your turn."
"My turn?"
"You were paying attention, right?"
"Of course I was."
"Then show me your farming skills, Matthew Hyung."
Matthew huffed quietly before kneeling down and carefully pushing the shovel into the earth, trying to copy Gunwook's movements exactly. Gunwook watched Matthew with endearment as he scooped the dirt.
"Is this okay? Like this?" Matthew asked.
"Mhm. A little more here."
Matthew adjusted immediately.
"You're doing it good."
Matthew started to smile proudly. He placed the seed down carefully, covering it with earth using both hands this time instead of the shovel.
Gunwook laughed. "You're treating it like a baby."
"Of course I have to do it carefully. It's important!"
"I didn't say you were doing bad though."
"Okay, done."
Gunwook gave him a thumbs up. "Perfect. Now keep doing these rows too, and I'll work on the other side."
Even though workers were already handling most of the heavy labor around the vineyard, Gunwook still wanted Matthew to learn the process himself, especially because Matthew had insisted on learning it too. So now the two of them worked side by side beneath the sunlight.
After some time, Gunwook had already finished his side. Of course he did. He was practically an expert here and knew every step naturally.
Meanwhile, Matthew was still carefully adjusting every little seed placement. After finishing his row, Gunwook leaned against the wooden post nearby and stared.
Matthew's brows were concentrated and slightly furrowed as he worked. His brown hair looked soft under the sunlight. His pink lips parted slightly whenever he focused too hard, and his eyes were full of passion.
Gunwook smiled unconsciously.
Matthew really was beautiful.
Not just pretty-beautiful.
The kind of beautiful that made Gunwook want to stare forever.
Eventually, Gunwook pushed himself off the post and walked over quietly before sitting beside Matthew, close enough for their shoulders to almost touch. Matthew didn't notice immediately since he was far too focused.
"You missed a spot."
Matthew jumped slightly. "Ah!"
Gunwook reached over to help him smooth the dirt down. Their hands brushed together briefly. Matthew's eyes had actually been sneaking glances at Gunwook the entire time, but the moment he looked up to him, Gunwook's face was suddenly way too close. Matthew turned his head quickly, and his lips accidentally pressed a kiss right onto Gunwook's cheek.
Both of them froze.
Gunwook blinked once. Then twice.
Matthew's eyes widened in shock.
Gunwook slowly touched the spot on his cheek where Matthew's lips had just been. "Oh?"
"W-Wait!" Matthew panicked. "I didn't mean to do that!"
"Really?"
"It's your fault! Why did you get so close to me?!"
Gunwook started to grin. "Ah… sorry for making you kiss me."
Matthew looked like he wanted the earth to swallow him whole.
Gunwook lightly tapped his own cheek again. "If you want, should I kiss you back? Fair fair?"
Matthew's entire face turned bright red instantly.
"No!!! You're annoying," Matthew stood up and muttered loudly. "I'm not doing this anymore."
Then he walked away sulkily toward the other side of the vineyard without even looking back.
Gunwook stayed seated, watching Matthew stomp away and smiled. He replayed the moment from earlier over and over again in his head. Was Matthew shy? And why was he so amused by it?
The more he talked to himself, the more confused he became. Everything had happened normally, but looking back, certain details were hard to explain. Could it be that he was developing feelings for Matthew? Was falling in love really that easy?
When he thought about his first love, the answer was yes. Falling in love happens easily, without warning. Love is like an allergy. You never know when it'll hit, and before you know it, you're sneezing uncontrollably.
But this time, no matter how much he thought about it, he couldn't find an answer. He was just a worker here and Matthew's temporary caretaker.
At first, Matthew had been rebellious, acting like a spoiled kid. Then his attitude changed. Some days he was hot, some days cold, until Gunwook couldn't guess what he was thinking anymore after that rainy night.
Gunwook hadn't been cautious at all about the possibility that Matthew could develop romantic feelings for him. Matthew's eyes were always too honest. Combined with his other reactions, it was hard to deny that Matthew might feel the exact same way he did.
Gunwook sighed again.
Could they really get together?
Gunwook didn't know how long he had been lost in thought before a worker came running toward him.
"Mr. Gunwook, Mr. Gunwook!"
Gunwook turned his head toward the direction the sound was coming from.
"Mr. Matthew fell off a tree while trying to help a cat. His ankle is in bad shape. He can't walk. We don't know if the ligament is torn or if the bone is broken. He's lying at home, groaning in pain."
Gunwook let out a heavy sigh and stood up. "How long ago?"
"Just now..."
There was no further conversation between him and his subordinate as Gunwook ran back to the house. When he reached the main house, he found himself standing at the door, huffing for breath.
Matthew was sitting on the floor while his mother applied an ice pack to his leg. There was also a new presence Gunwook hadn't seen before. A siamese cat resting on Matthew's lap.
"Matthew Hyung! Do you even know how dangerous that was? A cat? Both of you could've ended up even more hurt!"
Gunwook shouted worriedly as he walked closer to Matthew.
Matthew made a guilty face and looked like he was about to cry. "But the cat was in danger, so I had to save it."
"You could've asked someone else for help instead of climbing up there by yourself!"
"I know, but at the moment... I just... I just thought I had to save it."
"Don't cry, it's okay. I'll bring you to the hospital first. Just wait here."
After trying to calm him down, Gunwook stood up and went to get the car, pulling it to the front of the house. He walked back inside to pick up Matthew, who was still sitting there, then crouched down on the floor with his back facing him.
"Get on my back."
Matthew leaned onto his broad back. His small arms wrapped around Gunwook's neck, and his legs hooked around his waist. Gunwook made sure he wouldn't fall as he held his legs tightly.
Matthew's body was warm. When his chest pressed against Gunwook's back, he could feel his heart beating slightly faster.
"Sorry."
Fortunately, Matthew had only torn his ankle ligament when he fell from the tree. Aside from that, he only had some bruises and scratches on his tailbone, elbows, and forearms. He was hurt badly, but thankfully nothing serious.
They arrived back home, and Gunwook helped him out of the car, carrying Matthew to his room. Matthew went to take a bath first. He seemed to be enjoying himself, sitting in the bathtub to clean himself up, as Gunwook could hear him humming through the door.
"Gunwook!"
Gunwook sighed and walked over to stand in front of the bathroom door. A moment later, the door clicked open. Matthew was wearing a white bathrobe, open from his collarbone down to just above his navel. Water droplets rolled over his smooth skin. Gunwook caught himself following the trail of a small drop before Matthew cleared his throat to break the moment.
"Support me."
"Shouldn't you dry yourself off completely first?"
"It'll dry on its own. Just carry me to the bed."
Gunwook nodded and did what Matthew asked. As Matthew settled onto the bed, he used a small towel to dab at the hair at the nape of his neck. Gunwook let his weight sink down next to him and took a beige elastic bandage to wrap Matthew's ankle, preventing it from moving too much.
"How long until it heals?"
"If you sit still and aren't too naughty, two or three weeks. Take your medicine and apply the ointment just as the doctor ordered."
"Mhm. There's ointment for the bruising, too," Matthew spoke casually. "Are you going to apply it for me?"
"Hold out your hand."
"It's not just my hand and elbow," Matthew's face went red.
Right, there was the tailbone too, Gunwook remembered. Does this mean...?
"Are you disgusted?"
"N-no, I'm not disgusted. Of course I'll help you."
Afterward, Matthew let the bathrobe slip off his shoulders. It fell down to his hips, revealing his fair, glowing skin. His body was perfectly proportioned. Not too thin, not too broad, and not too muscular. His shoulders were not very wide, but they looked incredibly attractive. Looking down at his waist, one could see a classic V-taper. Matthew's skin looked smooth, and the cool air from the air conditioner made his pink nipples harden slightly.
"Turn around, please."
As soon as Gunwook spoke, Matthew turned his head away before lying face down. Gunwook pulled the robe, which was hanging loosely at his hips, down just enough to expose the bruised area and stopped at the purple mark on his skin.
"It hurts a lot, doesn't it?"
"Have you never fallen off a tree?"
"I have but I never said it didn't hurt. I never lied and said 'I'm fine' like you did."
Matthew didn't answer, burying his face into the soft white pillow.
"You're lucky no bones were broken or cracked. Do you know how dangerous falling is?"
Gunwook carefully dabbed the ointment onto the skin, slowly moving his fingers in circles over the large purple bruise. He used only his fingertips, afraid he might cause Matthew more pain.
"Earlier, you should have just been honest and said your hip hurt too much to ride in the car. I only thought it was your leg."
"Who would say their hip hurts? It's embarrassing." Matthew's face burned red.
"Even so, I am worried. So, if anything hurts, tell me the truth. Understand?"
"Stop saying you're worried about me so carelessly! I'm not a kid!"
"Only a kid thinks someone else's concern is annoying."
"Gunwook!" Matthew grumbled, lifting himself into a half-sitting position. "Stop doing this. Before I start to think you might actually feel something..."
"And what if I do?" Gunwook pushed Matthew's small shoulders back down onto the bed. Matthew resisted at first but eventually gave up. Gunwook then moved down, pulled the blanket up to Matthew's shoulders, and turned on the soft light of the bedside lamp.
"So... do you mean it?" Matthew asked.
"Let's talk about this later. It's not the right time for that," Gunwook said, cutting him off.
"If you don't have feelings, then don't say things like that, and stay away from me."
"It's my duty," Gunwook answered calmly. "That's enough for today. You're exhausted. Just sleep and get some rest."
༘˚⋆𐙚。࣪˖ ִֶָ🍇་༘⋆☘︎.˚⋆˚。⋆˚
Two week had passed since the accident. Matthew still wasn't fully recovered, but he was getting better.
"Really? And when will you be free?"
A deep voice drifted from the balcony after Gunwook walked into the owner's bedroom. That was the first thing he heard. The bed was occupied by the siamese cat that Matthew had saved the other day, now named Gia. When Gunwook asked why he gave that cat that name, Matthew simply said it came from his favorite pokemon, "Lugia." He couldn't help but laugh at his answer at that time. Matthew really was that cute.
The cat too, of course. Seeing him sleep comfortably on the bed was adorable. He really got himself a great life.
So jealous.
He quickly found Matthew, who was hidden behind the curtain.
"I'm lonely. It's so boring."
"I miss you too. I'm so busy this whole week but I'll be free starting the weekend, so I think I can visit you and stay for a few days? I also have something I want to talk to you about."
Gunwook abandoned the idea of greeting him and instead started tidying up the room for him.
"Really? Okay, Hao Hyung will come along too, right? I'll tell the workers to prepare a room. Okay, see you this Friday."
And the call ended after that.
Matthew swished the curtain aside and used his good leg to spin the chair around. When they faced each other, both of them went still.
Gunwook felt a strange feeling, one he couldn't explain. It felt like something was twisting inside his chest.
"This Friday, my friends are coming to visit me and stay over for the weekend."
"Friends?"
"Hanbin Hyung. He's coming with Hao Hyung." Matthew sounds so excited.
"I'll prepare two rooms for them."
"No," Matthew stopped him. He hesitated for a moment before speaking. "One room is totally enough."
Gunwook's chest felt tight and unsettled again, but this time it was different from before. It felt like being thrown into a washing machine, turned and shaken until his heart slammed against the drum.
"Okay. Understood."

Hanbin Hyung, Matthew's friend, was much better-looking than he had imagined. When the sports car arrived and parked in front of the vineyard entrance, he led a truck to pick up the guests and drove them to the house. He watched as they greeted each other with a tight hug.
To be honest, there were two people, so he couldn't tell who was who at first, but he immediately got his answer when Matthew shouted Hanbin Hyung's name with a big, wide smile. That's how he figured it out. The other person… Hao Hyung? He looked like a goddess. Very cute and seemingly very friendly.
Is everyone in this friend circle insanely good-looking?
"Mr. Hanbin is so handsome, isn't he, Mr. Gunwook?" a worker spoke up after seeing all three of them go inside. Gunwook nodded.
"Could it be that he's Mr. Matthew's boyfriend?"
"He said they're friends."
"Who would believe that? What kind of friend comes all the way to Yeongcheon just because of a torn ligament?"
"Your Matthew probably called and complained to him," Gunwook replied with a sigh.
The feeling he'd had since that day was hard to ignore. He didn't want to sound jealous, but of course he wasn't pleased when Matthew had him prepare only one room. The room had to be for Hao? And Hanbin was going to be sleeping with Matthew? Gunwook kept thinking.
"Lovers act needy over small injuries. They've probably been apart for a long time, and now they're sharing a room. They'll be all over each other tonight. Must be nice to have a partner."
"Gossiping about the boss will get you in trouble. Get going."
"Are you in a bad mood, Mr. Gunwook?"
"No. I'm fine. Perfectly normal."
The sun started to settle into the evening again when Hanbin invited Gunwook to join the dining table. The three of them, or maybe two since he wasn't sure of the situation in the room because he had gone to the field after the guests arrived, had been talking endlessly all day. Gunwook glanced at Hanbin before shifting his eyes toward the person next to him. Matthew sat still, saying nothing, his eyes focused only on the plates.
"What was your name? Gunwook, right? Seokmae told me about you."
"Seokmae?"
"Oh, it's the name we use between the two of us. Sit, sit. Hao Hyung wants to meet you too."
"H-Hanbin-ah!" Hao slapped Hanbin's shoulder.
"Why are you shy? Weren't you pestering me to ask who he was?"
"Guys, he's just a worker here."
"A worker you couldn't stop talking about?"
"H-Hao Hyung!" Matthew whined.
Huh? They've been talking about me? Gunwook thought.
"If it's more convenient, I can leave and let you three enjoy dinner."
Hanbin stopped him before Gunwook could take another step. "Gunwook-ah, just eat with us. I'd like to get to know you too."
"Yes, Gunwookie, just eat with us," Matthew smiled.
"Um, if Matthew Hyung's friends want me to join the table, I have no problem with it." Gunwook replied.
"Really? That's great!" Hao Hyung clapped softly, his face bright and his eyes sparkling. "Sit here! Sit next to me. Matthew hates eating as a trio so much too."
Gunwook scooped a portion of rice and naturally sat down beside Hao, while Matthew sat opposite them, next to Hanbin.
"It's all Hanbin's favorites. So unfair." Hao blurted out.
"Hao Hyung, don't get sulky. I asked Hanbin Hyung what you like to eat, but he didn't open my message. So unbelievable!"
"It's okay. Can we have my favorites tomorrow? I want to eat malatang, if it's not too much to ask."
"Not at all," Gunwook replied. "I'd be happy to. My mother won't have to stress over what to cook just to please you."
"Gunwookie is so sweet!" Hao praised, smiling.
Gunwook didn't expect it to rain today.
After they finished dinner and everyone went upstairs, he still remained seated at the dining table. The dishes had already been washed, so he was just sitting there with a cup of coffee, looking up at the sky through the windows.
Sitting alone left him with many heavy thoughts. On a rainy night like this, Matthew was probably hugging Hanbin right now. Gunwook remembered that they used to have sleepovers a lot in the past, especially now that they were sharing a room.
He didn't know why, but he kept drowning himself in questions. Why, why, and why?
He couldn't stop thinking about Matthew.
"Hey." A voice called out to him.
Gunwook turned and saw Hanbin walking toward him.
"Taking care of Matthew must be exhausting."
"A little bit."
"While we were in Canada together, I helped to fix his personality a little. Otherwise, you probably would've been hanging yourself from a grape rack within the first two days of dealing with him."
"It's called a grape trellis," Gunwook corrected him, but Hanbin waved his hand as if he didn't care to listen.
"You know, being an only child, he was spoiled, weak, stubborn, and nonsensical. Growing up feeling like no one loved him made everything become twisted and fragmented."
Gunwook nodded but said nothing, letting Hanbin continue talking about his friend.
"From university until graduation, he was aimless. Just partying and changing partners countless times. Luckily, he was a coward, or he would've caught a disease long ago. He looks like a rebel who should know everything, but in reality, he just tries to act like one. He's nonsensical as hell."
This time, Gunwook completely agreed too, but he still didn't say a word.
"You realize it, right? Someone trying to grow up on their own is in pain. They don't want anyone dictating their life but he's... weak. I don't know what other word to use. Seokmae isn't very capable, but he's good at trying. If he does something stupid, don't hold it against him. Just think of it as teaching a kid how to grow up."
"You're the only one here I want to look after him. In this world, besides me, you're the person he wants attention from the most. He isn't even this nonsensical with his father. You know that well. I'll leave him in your hands then. Don't make him sad."
Before Hanbin walked away, he briefly patted Gunwook's shoulder.
"By the way, I'm not his lover or boyfriend or anything. I'm dating Hao. So you don't have to be jealous of me. I noticed how you kept staring at me."
Hanbin turned back and disappeared through the door, walking toward the second floor.
Gunwook stopped his hand from lifting the cup and stared blankly at the door, Hanbin had just gone out.
So they aren't dating?
Why do I feel so stupid?
He sighed for what felt like the millionth time, still confused and unable to explain his feelings.
Was he actually jealous?

It had been a few days since Hanbin and Hao arrived. Gunwook didn't know how long they would stay, but he wasn't complaining either since he wanted Matthew to have company while he healed. He himself couldn't watch over him all the time because he had duties to take care of.
Sometimes, whenever he had free time, he would join the clique too. He learned that Hao could play the violin and was currently working as a freelance violist and teacher. Even though Hanbin majored in psychology, he also didn't work in his field, just like Gunwook. Instead, he helped with his family's company, which was why he was busy most of the time.
They all got along pretty well and had a great sense of humor but sometimes, Gunwook wished he could have Matthew to himself.
They never really had time alone ever since his friends came, so Gunwook decided to take the first step. He walked toward Matthew's room, knocked a few times, before letting himself in.
"Oh hey. What brings you here?" Matthew asked, looking up from his phone.
"Hyung. Let's go on a date tomorrow."
"A date?" Matthew's eyes widened.
"Well, we don't have to call it a date, but there's a place I haven't shown you yet," Gunwook replied nervously.
Matthew made a thinking pose before speaking. "Fine. Let's do that. I'm excited."
"Great. Then I'll pick you up tomorrow?"
Matthew nodded.
"Okay then. Good night. See you tomorrow, Hyung."
"Goodnight Gunwookie."
Gunwook waved before leaving the room, and Matthew also waved back at him.
The new day arrived slowly. Matthew greeted Gunwook with a wink and a big, wide smile.
"Hey. So what's our plan today?"
"I want to bring you somewhere. If we take the path alongside the vineyard, there's a small stream at the end of it. The atmosphere is lovely. I go there sometimes when I want to be alone."
"There's a stream?" Matthew's dark brown eyes sparkled. Gunwook caught himself smiling.
"Yes. Let's go there so we can catch the sunset too."
The distance to the stream wasn't far. As they walked closer, they could already hear the sound of rushing water.
"Follow me. Don't go off the path."
Gunwook reached out and took Matthew's soft hand. They walked through the bushes until they finally reached the area where the stream was clearly visible.
Gunwook sat on a large rock, pulling Matthew down beside him but forgetting to let go of his hand. He followed Matthew's gaze and realized he was staring at their hands.
"Oh… our hands," Gunwook said, but he didn't let go. Since Matthew didn't say anything either, he slowly interlaced their fingers. After staring at their tangled fingers for a while, Matthew tilted his head to look at him.
"Your hand is so soft." Gunwook said.
"........."
Matthew went quiet before speaking again for the first time.
"I can't believe there's a place like this behind my own house. Can I play in the water?"
"We didn't bring a change of clothes."
"But the water looks so inviting. It's so clear!" Matthew let go of their hands and took off his shoes and socks before dipping his feet into the stream.
"Ahh, it's freezing!" Matthew screamed, making Gunwook laugh again.
"Are you wearing boxers? If so, you can take off your other clothes and get in. That way your clothes won't get wet for the ride back."
"What?! You want me to get naked? Ridiculous."
"Not completely naked. Besides, when I applied the ointment.."
"That was an emergency!" Matthew argued as he turned away. "Who would want to get naked in front of the person they…"
Gunwook completed the word 'like'? in his head.
"You can just take off your pants and dip your legs in. Wearing a shirt and boxers isn't considered naked."
Matthew seemed to think about it for a long time, but the cool, clear water eventually convinced him to take off his clothes and step into the stream.
"It's so coooooold!" Matthew cried out. He carefully stepped over the stones in the stream before stopping to sit on a rock. Gunwook remained seated on the same rock, watching Matthew enjoy himself.
"Aren't you coming in?"
"No," Gunwook shouted back.
Matthew pouted slightly before reaching down to splash some water onto his arms.
"The water is insanely cold. I don't even know how to describe it. It feels like ice."
"Have you never played in a waterfall before?"
Matthew shook his head.
They didn't know how many hours had passed, but now the distant valley slowly turned golden.
Matthew stayed still, his lips pressed together as he watched the sun set over the mountains.
It felt like an eternity, yet time passed as quickly as a breeze. Gunwook looked at Matthew's side profile, motionless as he admired his beauty under the sunlight.
"It's so beautiful. I don't want to go back yet."
"Yes, so beautiful."
"Hmm?" Matthew hummed back.
"W-We need to go back soon, but we can stay a few more minutes. It's fine," Gunwook replied softly, without sounding suspicious.
With that, Matthew stood up and went into the water again. The water wasn't deep, but when he sat down, it reached his chest.
"I'm going deeper."
"That's dangerous."
Gunwook sighed and finally stripped off his clothes to join him.
"Matthew Hyung."
Once Gunwook was close enough, he grabbed his arm. Matthew jumped slightly.
"Why did you follow me?"
"I'm worried since the natural water flow can be dangerous, and the sky is starting to get dark."
"I'm fine. Let go."
"Just listen to me for once. Let's head back."
"Ugh. Gunwookie, you're no fun."
"Do you want me to let go?" Gunwook asked as he wrapped an arm around Matthew's waist and teasingly pulled him closer. Their bodies were now pressed together under the water. Gunwook gave him a devious smile, and Matthew's face instantly turned bright red.
"Ahh, why are you hugging me?!"
Gunwook didn't answer and just watched Matthew closely. He really looked pretty up close, but Matthew's grumpy expression eventually made him let go. After getting lost in his thoughts, Gunwook finally started to speak.
"Matthew."
Matthew looked up at him. "Hmm?"
"I-I think I like you."
Both of them stared at each other in silence.
Since they were standing so close together, they could feel each other's heartbeats pounding loudly and quickly. Matthew's cheeks grew redder as the seconds passed.
"I know we didn't get along well at first, but as the days passed, spending time with you made me realize that I'm happiest when I'm with you. It started with teasing here and there, but the more I got to know you, the more I realized you're just a cute little kitty I want to protect. Before I knew it, I had already fallen in love with you... also because I may or may not have gotten jealous over the possibility of you and Hanbin Hyung dating. I felt so stupid when I found out he was already dating someone. I know I might not be your best choice, or that I'm only a worker under you, but I'm sure I can treat you well."
"Do... do you like me too?" Gunwook asked when Matthew still hadn't said a word and remained frozen in place.
A few seconds later, finally..
"Gunwook, you're so unbelievable." Matthew splashed water at him before mumbling shyly, "Can't you see how I feel?"
Gunwook smiled and hummed. "Hmm... what could Seok Matthew possibly be feeling about me? I wonder."
Matthew splashed even more water at him.
"You idiot! Do you really want me to say it?"
"Of course. I don't want to assume anything, even if it might be true. You still have to confirm it for me."
"I-I like you too."
Gunwook immediately hugged him after hearing that answer. Matthew hugged him back tightly.
He felt so lucky to be able to hold Matthew close like this.
"You're cute."
Their breathing was still uneven. Gunwook took the chance to pull Matthew even closer and carefully kissed his forehead over and over until he was satisfied. Then he pulled back, cupped Matthew's smooth cheeks in his hands, and stared at his thick lashes.
"I really like you, Matthew. Will you be my boyfriend?"
"After all this, you still have to ask me? You idiot!"
"Yes and I need an answer."
"Y-Yes."
"Yes what?"
"Gunwook-ah!!"
Gunwook laughed again.
"Yes, I'll be your boyfriend."
They both smiled at each other happily.
"Matthew... can I kiss you?"
As soon as Matthew gave a slight nod, Gunwook immediately leaned closer.
When their lips touched, a warmth spread through Gunwook's heart. He didn't know exactly what Matthew was feeling, but he hoped it was the same. Their kiss wasn't rushed or desperate. It was soft and gentle, as if they were telling each other that this kiss was special.
"Gunwook..."
Matthew didn't let Gunwook lead for long. He wrapped his arms around Gunwook's shoulders and slowly closed his eyes. Gunwook pressed another gentle kiss against his lips, their tongues moving slowly together.
After a few minutes, Gunwook slowly pulled away. Matthew's lips looked red and swollen from kissing, looking so inviting that Gunwook wanted to kiss him all over again.
Matthew slowly opened his eyes. Since Gunwook couldn't resist, he leaned in once more, kissing him with tenderness and affection.
After they had kissed enough, they finally pulled apart, sharing one last quick peck before smiling shyly at each other.
"Let's get out. You look cold."
"You go up first and turn your back."
"Hey. Getting shy now?"
"No, but just look away."
Gunwook couldn't stop smiling and tucked a stray lock of hair behind Matthew's ear before turning around to get out of the water. Matthew soon followed after him.
"It's dark out now. Do you want to hold my hand while we get out of here?" Gunwook teased.
"Do you want to hold it?"
Gunwook nodded and intertwined their fingers again.
"Stop staring at me like that. Are we going or not? I'm freezing," Matthew complained.
"Okay, let's hurry back so you can take a hot shower and wrap yourself in a comfy blanket."
"But if you're still cold after all that... I can come and hold you. What do you think?"
"That would be best," Matthew smiled.
The distance wasn't that far, so it didn't take long before they arrived in front of the main house with their hands still intertwined.
As soon as they stepped closer, they spotted a car parked outside. It seemed Matthew's father had come to visit. Matthew looked down at the hand he was holding with Gunwook and hesitated, wondering whether to keep holding on or let go first.
"Hyung, you can go take a shower first. I'll go greet your father first."
Matthew shook his head when Gunwook tried to pull his hand away. "No, come up with me."
"Hmm, why?"
"I'm scared," Matthew confessed. His eyes darted around, avoiding eye contact. Gunwook couldn't tell exactly what he was worried about.
"What's wrong, Hyung?"
"Does your mother know about… us?" Matthew's voice wavered.
"That I'm talking to you? My mother knows well. Why do you ask?"
"Did your mother tell my father so he'd come and keep you away?"
Gunwook burst out laughing and pulled his hand back, gently ruffling the older man's hair. Matthew shot him a sharp, pouty look in return.
"I didn't think you liked me this much."
Gunwook spoke with sparkling eyes as he watched Matthew's face turn red from his simple words. Matthew didn't deny it. Even though he had never said it out loud himself, he didn't lie either.
"Is it so strange that I'm worried? I don't know if your mother likes me much either."
"Not at all. My mother hasn't said a single negative word. In fact, she insisted that I take very good care of you."
"Do you think my father would allow our relationship as well?" Matthew grumbled under his breath.
"Don't worry. If your father doesn't allow us, then let's elope to Canada together. We can live there, just the two of us."
"You're joking."
"I'm serious."
Gunwook's hand moved from Matthew's head to his shoulder instead.
"It's nothing. I think your father is just visiting the vineyard as usual. You don't have to worry. I'm not going to stop courting you anytime soon."
Matthew's cheeks started to turn red again. So endearing.
"Well… should I walk you up to your room?"
"No, no… what if my father gets suspicious?"
"Oh? So your plan was to seduce me and then keep me as your secret lover? That's not very nice, Matthew."
"Gunwook!" Matthew clenched his fists, prepared to lash out at him as usual.
"Shut up! Just go wherever you're going."
"Just a moment ago, you were holding my hand tightly. Do you fall in and out of love that quickly?"
"I hate you!" This was clearly a lie. Gunwook laughed at him. Matthew brushed past his shoulder and stomped back into the house, while Gunwook followed him with a smile, keeping just a short distance behind.
"Are you two fighting again?" Mr. Seok asked as he saw Gunwook walk into the house. He was holding a newspaper in his usual pose, with black coffee in his hand.
"Teasing Matthew is fun but we aren't really fighting."
"Are you guys getting close? I heard you went on a walk today."
"Yes. Lately, Matthew Hyung hasn't had much exercise since his leg has been hurting, but since it has gotten better, I wanted to take him for a walk."
"That's good. You're young and healthy. Getting exercise is good. How is Matthew? Does he whine much when you teach him the work?"
"No," Gunwook replied. "He's very dedicated. Even Hanbin Hyung visited recently and praised him, saying he's doing well."
"Oh yes I just saw Hanbin and spoke with him a little. Those two are so inseparable," Mr. Seok laughed, his eyes full of kindness at the mention of his son's best friend.
"I used to think that if Matthew returned from Canada and stayed glued to Hanbin, I'd never get him to work at the vineyard. I've invested in several businesses with that family. They're close. I'd trust them with my life."
Gunwook just kept listening as Mr. Seok spoke of the other man almost as if he were admiring a son-in-law. To be fair, in terms of social status, Hanbin was an undeniable match for Matthew. Gunwook sighed, and his chest tightened at the thought of his future with Matthew.
"Not until Matthew can truly stand on his own. I worry about the business, and I worry about my son. I don't sleep well."
"You don't need to worry about Matthew Hyung at all. Things here are going very well. Honestly, he could handle everything himself without my help. He's decisive and, in many ways, has more ideas and a more modern mindset than I do."
"In that case, you can go and open that clinic you've always wanted."
Gunwook hesitated before declining. "I might not want to open it anymore."
"Why not?"
Mr. Seok raised an eyebrow. He had always been certain that Gunwook wanted to go out, gain a lot of experience, and then work in his field of study rather than manage a vineyard. "You shouldn't bury yourself in this vineyard, Gunwook. I was so happy you had a dream and found yourself while you were still young. How can you suddenly abandon what you love after all those years of hard study?"
"Maybe it's because I've found something else I love too."
"Nonsense," he grumbled. "If that's the case, tell me. What do you love? What do you want to do?"
Gunwook looked down in silence, unable to speak. Mr. Seok let out a long sigh. "Don't indulge Matthew too much. Just because he's a bit nonsensical doesn't mean he can't survive on his own. What is this? You're the one who just said he's capable, yet you're the one afraid to let go. I know you love this vineyard, but you can open your clinic and still come back to visit often. There's no need to sacrifice your future."
"I…"
"Think it over carefully, Gunwook. Your life belongs to you. I don't want you stuck here."
Gunwook knew his well-wishes were sincere, but as he glanced upward and met Matthew's eyes looking down from the balcony, he sighed again. Opening his own clinic meant creating distance between them, and things were just going well. He might not be with him all the time, and he wasn't even sure if he felt deeply enough for him. What if Matthew felt this way because of proximity? Would it be different if the person beside him was someone else? Gunwook sighed again.
After finishing talking, Gunwook went to take a shower before going up to wish Matthew goodnight. He knocked and entered the room. Matthew looked at him immediately, as if he had been waiting for him to come up.
"Hey."
"Gunwook! I was waiting for you."
As Gunwook stepped in, he leaned his weight on Matthew's bed and sat beside him. Matthew took Gunwook's hands and held them.
"How was the talk with my father? Did he say anything?"
"He was just asking how well you're adapting here. I said you're doing really well. You don't have to worry."
Matthew let out a heavy sigh.
"Ah, I'm glad he didn't suspect anything yet."
"Hyung," Gunwook said, his tone turning serious.
"I know you're not ready to tell your father yet, but I want you to know that I'm really serious about us. If you're serious with me too, then I'd like to tell him about us the next time he comes to visit. I want to date you for real, with approval from the elders. I really like you, Hyung."
"Gunwookie…" Matthew was about to tear up.
"The other thing is, your father asked me if I'm planning to leave the work at the vineyard soon, since you're able to manage things now. I haven't replied to him yet because I wanted to talk to you first. Of course, my dream was to open a clinic one day, but since I met you and eventually fell in love with you, my dream has changed. I want to stay here, protect you, and love you instead. Working here is fun too, and now that I have you by my side, I don't want to let you go. What do you think about it?"
"Gunwookie.. you don't have to. If you want to go, you can… I'll just miss you so much but I'll try to visit you of course." Matthew's voice wavered.
"I thought about this while I was in the shower. No matter how much I think about it, I want to choose happiness, which means I want to stay beside you. You don't have to feel guilty if you think you're the reason I gave up my dream. It was my old dream anyway and maybe it sounds weird because we just agreed to be boyfriends today, but I'm planning to love you for a long time.. if you'll let me, of course."
Matthew didn't answer, but immediately pulled him into a kiss. Gunwook steadied himself by holding Matthew's shoulders. Their kiss was full of love, as if they didn't want to let each other go, but they had to stop to catch their breath.
"Gunwookie I want to love you for a long time too and you know what? Dating the vineyard owner's son has many good advantages. We can manage this together, or if you feel like you don't want to work anymore, just stay still and I'll spoil you. I'll be your sugar daddy."
Gunwook laughed. How could Matthew be so cute? They had just talked about something serious, but of course Matthew had to make everything brighter by saying something funny.
"Hm, your offer as my sugar daddy sounds good." They both laughed and held each other closely.

Ever since the day they confessed to each other, it was as if Gunwook craved hearing sweet words from Matthew. He loved watching his fair cheeks change color, his mischievous eyes that were secretly pleading, and his arrogant attitude that often made him more worried than annoyed. They had been dating for a few days already, and things were going pretty well but of course, just because you're dating doesn't mean you don't have to work anymore.
That afternoon, they took a walk through the fermentation house while Gunwook explained the characteristics of the wine produced and sold by the vineyard.
Matthew leaned over his notebook, scribbling down the new information.
Gunwook took one of the three glasses from the tray and handed it to him. Matthew held the stem, swirled the wine to release its aroma, and took a sip like a professional.
"It smells of oak, fruit, and honey."
"Yes," Gunwook hummed before continuing. "Rosé is similar, but we use Shiraz red grapes."
Gunwook took back the empty glass from the first type and offered a new glass of pink-orange liquid. Matthew took a sip of water before tasting it using the same method.
"Sweeter than the last one."
"Correct. These two types are easy to drink and mellow. They are served at a low temperature. Red wine is different. We don't just use the juice of the Shiraz grapes. We have to extract the color from the skins as well. The solvent for the color is the alcohol from yeast fermentation. We ferment it with the skins for over a week. Once we have the color and the tannins, we let the juice age in oak barrels. The process for red is more complex, so it's more expensive than the others."
Matthew sipped the last type of wine and remained silent as they walked through the vast hall. "Is all the wine made from our vineyard's grapes?"
"No. Each batch of wine involves selecting grapes from various regions. The flavors vary. Some we get from other vineyards. Our facility is quite large, with enough capacity to produce several grades. As for the duration, each type ages for about a year to a year and a half before being blended. I'll take you to the central area next. That's where the cellar is."
Matthew nodded. His cheeks were slightly flushed from the alcohol he had just consumed.
"Do you get drunk easily?" Gunwook asked, reaching out to touch his cheek without thinking. It was scorching, and it seemed to grow even hotter. Matthew avoided his gaze.
"If you're drunk, you can go rest."
"I'm not," Matthew shook his head. "My face just gets red easily. I'm not drunk."
"Are you sure?"
"Mhm." He nodded again. Gunwook reached out to ruffle his hair before resting his hand on Matthew's shoulder. Matthew's face turned twice as red as before.
"Don't be so touchy."
"I was afraid you wouldn't be able to walk."
"I won't be able to walk because of you," Matthew muttered, his shoulder twitching slightly but not truly trying to pull away.
Gunwook caught himself smiling, suddenly wanting to bite those cheeks.
"What are you looking at?"
Gunwook crossed his arms with a smirk.
"I'm looking at you, Hyung."
"I know you're looking… What I'm asking is what you're looking at exactly?"
"I'm looking at your eyebrows, your eyes, your nose, your mouth," Gunwook said, his eyes moving to each feature as he named them.
"Your lips look very kissable, Matthew."
Matthew's round eyes glared at him. He instinctively licked his lips before turning away.
"You can't just say things like that."
"Why? Can't I say my boyfriend's lips look kissable?"
This time Matthew turned back to look at him. His beautiful eyes shimmered as he stepped closer, placing his hand on Gunwook's chest.
"Gunwookie… can I kiss you?"
Gunwook didn't answer immediately. Instead, he pulled him into a hug. Matthew's lips were inviting. Of course, Gunwook wanted to kiss him. He buried his nose in his hair, moving lower until he carefully pressed a kiss to Matthew's cheek.
After kissing his cheek, Gunwook moved to his neck, burying his nose there and refusing to let go.
"I…" Matthew groaned, turning weak in his arms. "I feel like I'm going to die."
"I'm just smelling you."
"Gunwook-ah."
"Hm?" Gunwook hummed, his nose still buried in his neck.
"Let's continue this in my room instead."
Gunwook's eyes widened as soon as Matthew spoke. He pulled away from his neck.
"Sure. Let's go."
Their lips pressed together desperately as soon as they stepped into the room, the door locked of course. Matthew stepped back while Gunwook pushed forward, moving selfishly against his lips, sliding his tongue into the corner of Matthew's mouth and biting his lip before delving deeper. The two of them fell onto the bed together. Gunwook broke the kiss but didn't stop trying to taste his soft skin. He continued kissing Matthew's pale cheek and earlobe, sliding his tongue against him until Matthew let out a muffled moan. One hand moved from his chin to his neck while the other pressed his small hips into the mattress, pinning him down. He bit at his neck while pulling his shirt up higher.
"W-wait!"
Matthew protested from beneath him as Gunwook's fingertips brushed against him. They could both feel each other's lust clearly through the thin fabric pressed between their bodies. Matthew was panting, his face flushed deep red all the way down to his neck.
"I need to prepare..." Matthew said, avoiding Gunwook's eyes, his heart racing. "Can you wait?"
Gunwook's eyes stayed fixed on him as he leaned down again, but this time Matthew's small hands came up to stop him.
"I'll let you do it. I'll definitely let you finish but I need to prepare myself. Wait for me. Just ten minutes. Only ten minutes."
"Ten minutes for you to run away?"
"I won't run." Their eyes met before Matthew looked down again. "I definitely won't run. Please... don't let me be humiliated during our first time, okay?"
His words made Gunwook think back to the first time they'd kissed. Matthew wanted all of their 'firsts', no matter what they were, to be memorable. At the very least, he wanted it to happen when both of them were ready.
Gunwook sighed and pulled himself up even though his body ached with desire. Matthew's kisses had been softer and more fervent than ever, making it even harder to calm down and let him go. Once free, Matthew grabbed a towel and hurried into the bathroom. Gunwook sprawled across the bed, thinking about Matthew. He didn't care what his lover had been through since it was just the past anyway.
Matthew must have had countless lovers before. Thinking back to their short conversation in the supermarket long ago, when he said he had experience, and asked whether older people are experienced. He wondered. Had Matthew always dated younger guys before? Or why had he asked that like that? Now he was worried. What if he wasn't good enough for him? He had nothing to hold him back.
The bathroom door opened, and Matthew walked out with a towel wrapped only around his waist, revealing droplets of water across his entire body. Gunwook caught a glimpse before looking away. Matthew's skin was still flushed and even redder than before he went into the bathroom.
"Do you want to shower?"
Gunwook nodded and grabbed a towel, heading to the bathroom. His mind was not at peace as his body was still burning. It hadn't stopped for a single second, even after releasing himself in front of the mirror. He vented his frustration. The reflection of himself in the mirror didn't look like the same person from before. His dark brows were knitted together as he tried to let everything go, but he couldn't. What was this stifling feeling? Was it just the anxiety that he wouldn't be able to keep Matthew with him forever?
After Gunwook splashed water on his face until he was satisfied, he returned to the bedroom. Matthew was still in the same towel, sitting and staring at his hands clasped in his lap. As soon as the bathroom door shut, the sound of it clicking closed made Matthew jump. Gunwook stepped closer and placed a hand on his shoulder. Matthew flinched again.
"What's wrong?"
"N-nothing."
"Then why aren't you getting dressed?" Gunwook furrowed his brows after asking the question.
Matthew looked dazed. If he stayed undressed like this, he'd end up catching a cold. Gunwook walked to the wardrobe, picked out comfortable pajamas, and turned on the lights since it was already late. The sunlight outside had turned a deep orange, and the sun was nearly set.
"Put these on. Let's go down for dinner."
"W-wait a minute."
Gunwook arched a brow again. Matthew looked annoyed, muttering a curse under his breath, though it was loud enough to be heard.
"You little brat."
"Excuse me?"
"I went in there to prepare myself... sat here gathering my courage for so long. Don't tell me you aren't going to do it anymore!"
This time, it was Gunwook's turn to look stunned. He had thought Matthew didn't want him to touch him any further.
They both looked away in different directions, awkward with their own thoughts. Matthew reached out to snatch the pajamas from his hand, but before he could take them, Gunwook held them back, refusing to let go as he stammered out a reply with a straight face.
"I'll do it... Let's do it."
"I'm not letting you anymore, damn it!"
"Hey," Gunwook cried. "Matthew, wait."
"Wait for what? Give them back. I'm getting dressed for dinner."
"Don't get upset yet. I just thought you weren't ready."
"If I'm not ready, then give me the clothes. Give them to me. That's an order."
"Can I disobey your order just this once?"
Everything went still. Matthew stopped jumping to reach for the pajamas Gunwook held high. His small hands had been gripping Gunwook's shoulders from the start, leaving them in a dangerous position. Two men in nothing but towels, with their bare chests pressed on each other. Gunwook leaned forward, whispering his plea repeatedly and softly against his ear.
Before anything else, Gunwook deliberately tossed the clothes out of reach and wrapped his arms around his bare waist, pulling him in tight.
"Gunwook!"
"...Please," Gunwook pleaded again.
Matthew's eyes wavered.Though he had shouted harshly at first, meeting Gunwook's steady gaze made him soften instantly. Gunwook traced his fingertips along the arms gripping his shoulders until he reached his hands, then placed his palms flat against them. He gently caressed his pale, beautiful body.
When Matthew finally stopped resisting, Gunwook moved his face closer until they could feel each other's breath, letting his gaze fall deep into his wide eyes. The only sound that followed was the wet sound of their lips pressing together again. But this time, their hearts raced with an excitement more intense than ever before. From gentle and slow, the kiss turned passionate, like two people starved of oxygen. Matthew's small hands squeezed Gunwook's shoulders before sliding up to hook around his neck, pulling their bodies even closer.
The member that had just calmed down a moment ago began to heat up again. It felt as though the kiss was the alcohol they were both intoxicated by. Their movements were slow and deliberate as they naturally guided each other to the bed.
"G-Gunwook."
"Hmm?"
Everything felt slower than usual. Gunwook slowly slipped his hand past the loose towel hanging around Matthew's waist. He slid his hand through the opening and touched his thigh, lightly tracing upward before pulling the towel away from his body. He pressed his lips against his collarbone, biting gently until a pink mark appeared on his pale skin.
Matthew covered his face with his hand, which left only his parted lips visible as he gasped when Gunwook's tongue touched his nipple. It looked incredibly seductive as his chest arched up to meet the soft touch. Soft moans escaped his lips. His body grew hotter and hotter.
Gunwook tasted every part of him with his lips, making sure no spot was left unexplored. He trailed his lips lower and guided Matthew's slender legs up. His beautiful hole looked so soft. When Gunwook was about to touch him with a lubricated fingertip, Matthew, who was beneath him, jerked and lunged forward to hug him.
"W-wait."
"Yeah?" Gunwook pushed himself up, pulled the pillow from beneath his head, hooked an arm around Matthew's slim waist to lift it higher, and slid the pillow under his hips. From this angle, his beautiful body was perfectly on display. With his legs spread wide, Gunwook settled on his knees between them.
Matthew was panting. His desire was clearly evidenced by the member standing up before him, and Gunwook was no different.
"Gunwook!! Wait... w-wait a second." Matthew cried out in a panicked voice.
He pushed himself up into a sitting position as Gunwook moved closer to him and braced his hands against his chest. His face was so flushed in red.
"I... let me doing it instead."
"M-Matthew."
Gunwook looked at his face. Matthew looked like he was about to cry which made Gunwook only sighed. If he said we didn't have to do it now and let's wait if we both should be more ready, would he get angry again? He wanted to possess him, but he had also no intention of forcing him. If Matthew insisted 'no', even at this stage... even this far in, Gunwook would stop everything just to protect his heart.
"T-there are many things to do. Let me start..."
Seeing the determination in those eyes, Gunwook nodded and let himself lie back, making sure to catch Matthew and pull him down on top of him. They began to kiss again, more passionately than before. Gunwook was hard to the point of aching, but he waited patiently for Matthew to handle it since he didn't want to hurt Matthew.
Matthew opened the drawer on the bedside and pulled out a condom and a new bottle of lubricant. He applied it thoroughly to his own hole and rolled the thin plastic onto Gunwook while he lay bare.
Matthew was a little bit clumsy, completely opposite to his assumption that he'd be more experienced. As he crouched over him, Gunwook couldn't help but smirk with satisfaction. Matthew slid a fingertip into his own body.
When one finger went in, his face tightened. His eyes were closed, but his whole body was shaking. Gunwook pulled the unsteady Matthew into an embrace, helping him by sliding his fingertips into his hole, one finger at a time. It became easier as the cool gel lubricated the soft tissue.
"Gunwook..."
Sweat from his hairline made things feel sticky as their faces pressed together. Gunwook tilted his head to kiss his ear, slowly increasing the number of fingers and massaging to help him relax.
"Breathe in and out deeply. Don't tense up."
Matthew complied. Soon, Gunwook could fit three fingers. Seeing that he was sufficiently relaxed, the expert sat up again. Matthew's eyes were closed tight, but when the fingers were withdrawn and replaced by something else, his face twisted even more.
"Ahh."
Matthew bit down his teeth so hard the line of his jaw stood out.
"Does it hurt?"
Matthew shook his head, insisting on lowering his hips further. The head disappeared completely, but it was still difficult to insert fully. Looking at Matthew's enduring face, Gunwook decided to flip them over, laying him back against the bed instead. Matthew widened his eyes as Gunwook turn him over. Gunwook grabbed the gel and applied more, sliding his fingertips in before slowly pushing himself in, inch by inch.
"Breathe deep."
Gunwook leaned down to kiss the center of his spine, drawing all his focus as his tongue trailed over his skin while he pushed deeper. Matthew relaxed, but his body still clung to every inch of him. It was hard to move.
"So tight."
When Gunwook moved forward, the fingers gripping the bedsheet tensed even more.
"I'm going to move."
Gunwook leaned up to kiss his cheek and slid all the way in. His heart trembled as he used his palms to stroke Matthew's skin while he rocked. Gunwook couldn't stop himself to move slowly as it becoming impossible. He kissed his shoulder repeatedly before using one hand to pull his face around and kiss on his lips again. Matthew couldn't hold back his feelings anymore and escaped a deep satisfied moan.
"Ahh."
Gunwook gripped his firm hip, squeezing and holding it so he couldn't rock away. Matthew whole body shook and his arms stretched out helplessly. He broke the kiss to press his face into the mattress.
"Gunwook... not there... I... I can't."
When Gunwook hit a certain spot, Matthew pleaded helplessly. Gunwook hammered into that spot over and over, his movements growing more intense and forceful.
Matthew is filled with his cries as he begged for sympathy. When he tried to reach down with one arm to touch his own hardness, Gunwook quickly pinned his wrist, forcing it back into its original position and punishing him with more thrusts. Soon they both came together.
Gunwook pushed himself up, stroking the back that was still trembling. Matthew's white neck was now deep red and slick with sweat. Gunwook rocked forward, diving deep into him one last time before pulling out.
Matthew pushed himself up on his arms and turned to kiss Gunwook. Gunwook paused and then flipped him onto his back, forcing his arms to wrap around his waist again before sliding deep once more. He could see his face from this position clearly. His member that swayed with Gunwook's hips was still wet but it seemed to wake up again as he pushed forward into him once more.
Matthew hands clutched on Gunwook's shoulders, dragging his nails across his back. The deeper Gunwook buried himself, the more he felt he possessed him.
"Matthew..."
Gunwook called his name as he gripped his ankles to lift them high, kissed his ankle bone, and draped his legs over his shoulders. He didn't know how much time had passed but them gazing at each other at this moment felt like an eternity.
Gunwook leaned down to kiss him again, his eyes never leaving his. Matthew held on him tight. Though it was sticky, no one cared. The sound of their lips switching with the sound of their moving bodies waves before Matthew released for a second time.
"A-Ahhh."
Matthew left out a soft cry. This made Gunwook heart's racing through his body and came right after him.
Matthew buried his face in the sheets. White stains are on the pillowcase and some across his stomach. Gunwook pulled out and tied the condom securely, and grabbed some tissues from the bedside to clean up before lying down beside him. He reached out to stroke the head of Matthew who was still hiding his face and pulled him to rest on his neck instead.
"My Love."
Gunwook called him with voice exhausted and kissed the top of his head before the owner of the name finally looked up to meet his eyes. Matthew's cheeks were so red like tomatoes. He was so cute that Gunwook couldn't look away. Matthew smiled slightly. When they both catched their eyes again, Gunwook leaned to kiss his lips softly, many times before finally kissing his forehead.
"I like it when you call me 'My Love'."
"In that case, I'll call you that all night."
Matthew smiled until his eyes closed, burying his face in Gunwook's shoulder.
Matthew was not feeling very well the next morning. He had a slight fever and was fussy with a stomachache all day. Gunwook went down to get him rice porridge and wiped his body afterward, which was full of hickeys. Gunwook wasn't sure exactly what the cause was, so he asked Hanbin if he could come upstairs to look at Matthew. Hao followed as well. Matthew looked quite angry at him for calling his best friends upstairs to visit without permission.
"How's it going, Mr. Pathetic?"
Matthew glared and pulled the blanket up to his neck. Gunwook sat back down by the bed and brushed the stray hairs from Matthew's forehead.
"What kind of position were you in to make you unable to walk?"
"Mind your business," Matthew said roughly and turned his back on him. Hanbin moved to sit on the other side of the bed, opposite Gunwook, and tried to pull the blanket away, but Matthew held it tight.
"Hey, you have a guest. Greet your guest."
"You're annoying. My house doesn't welcome you. Only Hao Hyung is welcomed," Matthew replied grumpily. "Go away."
"Matthew, are you okay? Feeling better now?" This time Hao asked with a worried face.
Matthew nodded to him.
"Whoa, not acting sweet with me but with everyone else?"
"Hyung, just go away. I want to be with Gunwookie."
Hanbin arched an eyebrow and caught sight of Matthew's neck. While Matthew was distracted, he yanked the blanket away. Matthew couldn't hold on in time. As he sat up, his loosely buttoned pajamas revealed the marks on his neck and lower. Hanbin broke into a grin and looked back at Gunwook, while Matthew tried to pull the blanket back.
"Impressive, Gunwook. Nice work."
"Huh?"
"It's going to be a bit rough. Most people get sick the first time. Especially the stomach. It'll ache like you've been punched hard. Every one of my exes complained about it."
"The first time?" Gunwook looked at Matthew, who was hiding his whole body under the blanket.
"I thought it was because it had been a long time for him, which is why he seemed in so much pain. Why didn't you tell me, Hyung?"
"Damn you, Hanbin Hyung! Did a ghost open your mouth to speak? Go die somewhere!"
"Don't tell me he bragged that he'd done it before?"
"I thought he was an expert.." Gunwook looked down.
Now, when Gunwook thought about it, Matthew had asked him whether it was true that older people were more experienced in bed. That meant he was curious but it also made him wonder if Matthew was speaking about himself, as an older person who had never actually had that experience, even though people might assume he had because of his age and might think he was good at it, when in fact he had never done it before. Could that be it?
Hanbin burst out laughing and kicked Matthew under the blanket. "What a liar you are. Let me see the face of this 'expert.' Who was it that whined to me that everyone you dated just wanted to get into your pants, and you broke up with them all because of that? Look at you now. Were you begging Gunwook to do it? You even tricked him into thinking you were experienced. This is hilarious! How was it? Did Gunwook give you a full time, didn't he? You're completely wiped out. Poor thing."
"Shut up and get out of my house, Sung Hanbin. Hao Hyung, please look at your boyfriend."
"Whoa! Full name this time. Okay, okay, I won't bother you anymore. Have enough rest and stick to soft foods for now."
"Matthew, don't mind him. I'll scold Hanbin later. Now, just excuse us and get well soon." Hao was always so sweet.
"Thank you, Hao Hyung," Matthew replied from under the blanket.
Gunwook laughed but immediately had to shut up when Matthew threw back the blanket to glare at him. His cheeks were so adorable, but his eyes were still as fierce as ever.
"What are you laughing at?"
"Nothing."
"Gunwook!"
"If you had said that, I wouldn't have gone so hard yesterday." Gunwook ruffled his hair.
"No, but I wanted our first time to be good. It's embarrassing to say that I've never slept with someone... at my age, no one would believe that," Matthew answered shyly.
"Can I ask you why?"
"I felt like I wanted to experience it with the person I truly love, and all the men I dated so far were all jerks. Well, all the relationships didn't last long, and one day I just stopped because I got bored."
"I hope you won't get bored of me anytime soon." Gunwook leaned in and kissed Matthew's forehead.
"Of course not."

"Gunwookie, try this!" Matthew handed Gunwook another shirt and pushed him into the changing room.
Today was just another day they went on a date. Matthew had been whining about how work had been a lot lately and how he needed time to rest, so Gunwook suggested they go to town again. He didn't expect Matthew to dress him in random clothes.
This time, Gunwook grinned instead of arguing, as they had done for the past half hour every time Matthew wanted to dress him. After Gunwook pulled his shirt off, Matthew forced him to turn around, holding the shirt up to ensure a good fit before turning him back and tying the necktie properly.
"Now you look more like a gentleman," Matthew smiled as he reached up to gather his shoulder-length hair. "If you get a haircut, you'll look so handsome."
"Does this mean I'm ugly?"
"N-no, I didn't say that. You already look so handsome, but if your hair is a bit shorter, you'll look younger." Matthew tried to explain and turned Gunwook back to face the mirror.
Matthew then embraced him from behind, tucking himself under his arm.
"Gunwookie, don't get sulky. I think I'll get one like this for myself too."
"The exact same one?"
"Yes, so we can have couple shirts? Isn't this romantic? We can pick out pants too. Now take the shirt off. I'll go look for pants. What's your waist size?"
"Will you come back in to help me with the zipper?"
"Gunwook-ah. Can't you dress yourself?"
"You came in to help with the shirt, didn't you?" Gunwook teased him.
Matthew rolled his eyes, pulled the curtain open, and walked out. A few hours later, their hands were full of shopping bags. Gunwook didn't even see how much money Matthew spent that day. He simply swiped a gold credit card on everything available: clothes, watches, belts, even new shoes and socks. More than half were for Gunwook, though.
"How much did we spend today?" Gunwook asked once they got into the car.
Matthew turned on the music, ignoring the question.
"Could you deduct it from my monthly salary, Hyung?"
"No. I bought it for you. Do you not want to accept it?"
"No, it's not that, but all these things are so expensive, and no decent man wants to be spoiled by his boyfriend."
"Didn't we agree I'll be your sugar daddy?" Matthew said jokingly before continuing in a serious tone when Gunwook didn't reply. "Just ignore other people. I want my boyfriend to be handsome. What's wrong with that? Besides, you're younger than me. It's not that weird."
"I'm uncomfortable with that."
"If you're uncomfortable, then repay me by being my good boy. It's not that hard. First off, stop sulking right now." Matthew unbuckled his seatbelt and reached over to tilt his face toward him, trying to make Gunwook smile with both hands.
"Your face is going to age faster than mine at this rate."
"I don't like people buying things for me."
"That's your problem. But I like buying things for the person I love and I don't like seeing you scowl like this."
"You're selfish. Being with you gives me a headache."
"Really?"
Matthew arched an eyebrow. Just as Gunwook was about to pull his chin away from his small hands, Matthew struck first. He leaned in close until their noses brushed, then pressed his lips against Gunwook's. The kiss was soft but firm, and when he pulled away..
"Still have a headache?" Matthew smirked.
Gunwook let out a breath but couldn't help complaining further. "You really are something else. Why are you getting more like a devil every day?"
"If you realize you've made a mistake, then just be my cute little slave. These clothes don't cost that much. You managed to put that stupid straw hat on me, so don't be a crybaby. We aren't others anymore, and we aren't just boss and employee either. Don't reject me."
"Alright, Hyung, but only this time, okay?"
Matthew nodded in response.
"By the way, your father called me and said he's coming back this evening for a short visit. The thing I talked about with you last time… are you ready to tell him yet?"
"Hmm, sooner or later this conversation will come, so let's go through it. But please promise me one thing."
"What is it?"
"You won't leave me, right? Us, I mean."
Gunwook kissed Matthew on the nose and reassured him with a "no" and kind words afterward.
The drive back didn't take long since the traffic was bearable and soon they just sat on the dinner table. There are so many varieties of food today since Matthew's birthday is coming up in a few days and his father can't be here to celebrate with him so they decided to have a little pre-birthday meal today together instead.
"Woah they are all my favorites!" Matthew said with lots of exitement.
"All the best for my son." Mr. Seok smiled. "Gunwook-ah , here eat a lot." He said it while scooping few dishes into Gunwook's plate.
"Thank you." Gunwook replied.
"So.. do you have any wishes Matthew? Wait.. did you get a new necklace? Looks pretty."
The necklace in talk is a necklace with a lock charm. Gunwook bought it on the other day when they both were storming around at the market. It doesn't cost much but Matthew was more than excited when Gunwook gave him that, especially when Gunwook himself also bought a necklace for himself but instead of a lock charm, he got a key charm instead. He jokingly said I'm the key and the only one who can open your heart kind of shit so cheesy but Matthew enjoyed that. They called this as their first couple items.
"Oh this one.." Matthew looked down and touched his necklace. "My boyfriend got it for me."
"Your boyfriend? Since when have you been dating?" his father furrowed his brow but not shouting at him.
"Gunwook do you know about this?"
Gunwook looked back and forth between Mr. Seok and Matthew.
"So, is no one going to give me a straight answer?"
"It's me."
Matthew setting his spoon down and pulled his hands into his lap, refusing to look his father in the eye when Gunwook gave that short answer. Gunwook reached out to squeeze Matthew's soft hand under the table.
"We just started dating for a while."
"I saw you two fighting every day so how is this possible?"
"Yes," Gunwook replied, meeting his eyes steadily. "We fought until we understood each other and we... understood each other a bit too well."
"And after that?"
"After that we confessed and decided to be together."
"Is this the reason why you hesitated last time when I asked you whether you want to stay here or leave to explore yourself?"
"Yes. Back then, I thought I wanted to try as many new things as possible, but now, after spending time with your son, I realized those things are not as important anymore. I would rather spend my time with him or experience those things together with him by my side, if you allow me. I've never been more certain about anything than wanting to hold your son's hand for a long time and walk a path together where we can both grow and mature side by side. The future for us is uncertain, yes, but what I know for sure now is that I don't. No. I won't let go of Matthew's hand anytime soon. We didn’t get together the way most couples do, but I think that only shows how different we are, yet we still ended up falling for each other regardless. My love for him grows more and more each day. I know very well that my status is not high, but please let me prove to you that I can make your son happy. I'll keep improving myself to show you that I’m someone your son can rely on. I really love Seok Matthew."
Gunwook looked at his lover and his eyes are tearing up again, feeling so touched.
"Dad.. I really love Gunwook too." Matthew's voice is shaking.
"People start with different capital," Mr. Seok began to talk and went back to eating comfortably.
"I don't mind. Not about it being two men because I know Matthew likes boys and also that not about the difference in status. As long as you're responsible and can take care of Matthew I'm satisfied."
"Dad I don't need someone to take care of me. I proved I can take care of myself while I'm here and I can take care of my Gunwookie too. We both are going to take care of each other."
"Take care of each other," Mr. Seok smiled warmly at his son. They both finally met their eyes. "I don't know if I'll be here today or tomorrow. My only wish is for my son to be happy. If my son decides for you or you're going to be his life partner, then I'll leave him in your hands, Gunwook."
"Whether things are heavy or light, I ask you to be patient with each other and talk with reasons."
Both Gunwook and Matthew hummed in response.
"So you're fine with me and Gunwook dating each other?"
"I'm more than fine with that. Also I know Gunwook too. He's a nice person and really hardworking. At least I know he is way better than all your boyfriends you had. You're so lucky son."
"Dad please!!" Matthew whined and Mr. Seok laughed.
"Come on. Didn't we want to celebrate your birthday? Let's eat."
They all laughed happily and enjoyed their time together. Matthew was really happy that his dad approved of their relationship. After the dishes were washed, he immediately went to the sitting room, where Gunwook was resting on the sofa, just to sit on his lap in the middle of the room. Gunwook held Matthew's back as Matthew leaned down to kiss him softly and shifted their position.
"Someone might see us."
"Let them."
"I know your father approved of our relationship, but do you want him to see us like this?"
"Ahh, but I bet he already went to sleep, and no one's going to tell Dad," Matthew whined as he made himself comfortable on Gunwook's lap. "I want to stay like this for a long time."
"No one's stopping you."
Matthew laughed but leaned up to kiss his lips again. His eyes were bright and shimmering.
This clingy little kitten.. Gunwook really wanted to devour him until there was nothing left.
"Hyung," Gunwook called softly, burying his nose against his neck. Matthew tilted his head to make it easier for him to kiss him.
"I haven't held you for many days."
"Oh? And?"
"Did I do a bad job that night?"
"What are you talking about?"
"Well, you don't seem to want to do it again."
Matthew went quiet and rested his forehead on Gunwook's shoulder. "It hurt."
"But you finished twice."
"That's because you teased me."
"I just wanted you to be happy."
"Liar," Matthew argued loudly. "You just wanted to make yourself happy. Do you think I don't know?"
Gunwook laughed softly and Matthew continued to talk, "Being with you really does make me happy, you know."
As Matthew spoke, Gunwook tilted his chin up and leaned down to kiss those beautiful lips again. They tasted so sweet. He wanted to kiss him over and over again.
"M-Matthew…" Gunwook slid his hand down to wrap around his butt, lightly squeezing him.
"Gunwook, you perverted brat. Where are you putting your hand?"
"Where do you think?" Gunwook smirked.
Before he could answer, Matthew's phone rang, interrupting them.
"Oh, it's Hao Hyung."
"It's our time now," Gunwook said, tightening his grip and refusing to let him go easily. "Can't you just ignore the call or tell him to call later?"
"Ah, but maybe he wants to talk about our meetup this Thursday. My birthday, you know."
"What if it isn't about that?"
"Come on, don't be such a child. Let go. I have to take the call."
Being scolded in such a serious tone made Gunwook loosen his arms. Matthew got up to pick up his phone, answering with his back turned to him.
Gunwook kept staring at Matthew's back. Matthew turned his head slightly to look at him, then walked out of the room. Gunwook stayed in the same spot, hands clenched tightly. All he could do was stare and think:
This kitty got away so easily again. Damn it.

"HAPPY BIRTHDAY!"
Matthew had just stomped downstairs, grumbling about not finding Gunwook in the bedroom. He was still dressed in pajamas, his hair messy, when he was suddenly greeted by his friends in the morning.
"What the hell are you guys doing here this early? Didn't we have plans for the afternoon?"
"Hey, we're surprising you!" Hanbin said while Hao blew a noisy party horn. Matthew's round eyes scanned the room until they landed on Gunwook, and he immediately pouted.
"You too, Gunwookie?"
"How could he miss it?"
"If you're going to play around, can you not mess with my man?" the birthday boy said as he walked over and grabbed Gunwook's arm, pulling him away from the group.
"You're corrupting a good person."
"He was corrupted the moment he started dating you, Matthew!"
"Shut up," Matthew snapped at Hanbin, though he followed it with a laugh. "But thanks for coming. Honestly, let's just cancel our afternoon plans and spend time together now but later I really just wanted to be with Gunwookie."
"Obsessed with your husband much?"
"Hao Hyung!"
"Yes??" Hao replied cheekily.
"You should've told me they were coming, Gunwook-ah."
"I was going to," Gunwook said softly. "But I had to go out first, so I called them over thinking they could keep you company."
"You asked them to stay with me? And why are you busy today?"
"I won't be away for long. Just maybe two hours."
"Hey, hey! We're right here. Stop acting like you two are the only people on earth!"
Hanbin shoved Matthew until he nearly stumbled over, but Matthew only tightened his hold around Gunwook's arm.
"Gunwookie, that hurt."
"Such an actor," Hanbin said.
"Mind your business!" Matthew barked at his friend before turning back to Gunwook with a pout.
"Can you blow on it for me?"
Gunwook smiled but didn't blow on the 'injury'. Instead, he leaned down and kissed his forehead gently. Matthew didn't seem shy about being teased by his close friends. If anything, it was almost as though he wanted to show them off a little, showing everyone exactly how they were dating.
"I'll go now, so have fun, you three."
"See you, Gunwookie. I'm gonna miss you." Matthew gave Gunwook a peck on the cheek before finally letting go of his arm.
Gunwook wasn't out for very long. In fact, he only had a quick appointment with the manufacturer that he really couldn't reschedule. A few hours later, he returned home to find Matthew dancing and singing karaoke with his friends. As soon as Matthew spotted him, he ran over and hugged him tightly.
"Gunwookie. Finally. I missed you."
"Calm down, Matthew. He wasn't even gone for that long, and you're already whining about being lonely when me and Hao are here," Hanbin said with a roll of his eyes.
"I don't care. I just want him around me all the time." Matthew buried his face against Gunwook's chest.
"Dinner's already ready. Let's go eat."
Gunwook smiled and wrapped an arm around Matthew's waist, leading everyone into the dining room.
Everything had been laid out on a long table, including an ice bucket filled with wine.
"This is our best-selling and most popular wine," Gunwook explained.
"Wow, I'm so excited to taste it. I'm sure we're going to get wasted tonight like the old days," Hanbin said with a wink.
"Hanbin Hyung, you can't get too wasted. You can't sleep in my room like the old days anymore, remember? I have a boyfriend now."
"Relax, Matthew. I already asked Gunwook if he could prepare guest rooms for me and Hao Hyung again."
"Oh, Gunwook is so sweet."
Gunwook pulled out a chair for Matthew while the food was served to everyone. Of course, they had prepared all of the birthday boy's favorite dishes again, even though his friends had intentionally snuck in food he disliked, like cheese, as a joke. Matthew ate more than usual, and the atmosphere was lively and warm.
"If you're full, should we bring out the cake? We made it ourselves this time," Hao asked.
"Is it even edible?"
"Hanbin whipped the cream so hard his sweat was dripping into it. Look at his dedication. Do you dare insult him?" Hao teased.
"Eww. No thanks, I'm gonna puke."
"Are you pregnant?"
"No!"
Hanbin ducked under the table to avoid the tissue Matthew threw at him. Gunwook got up to grab the cake from the fridge, lit the candles, and turned off the lights. When he walked back out, Matthew was already waiting with a huge smile on his face.
"Today's the day my cheeks are going to hurt the most."
"Well, you are smiling an awful lot," Hanbin shouted back.
"I'm happy," Matthew answered sincerely. "I've already made my wish."
"Wait, wait! Sing the song first!"
Hao interrupted them, and they all began singing the birthday song together while Matthew closed his eyes. Soon after, he blew out all the candles in one breath.
Matthew cut the cake into equal slices for everyone in the house. By then, the wine had already been opened too, and the glasses clinked together over and over again. Matthew's pale cheeks turned light pink after only two glasses.
"Seems like Matthew's drunk already. Keep an eye on him, Gunwook-ah."
Gunwook nodded at Hanbin while watching his boyfriend dance happily with Hao.
"We're all worried about Matthew. Everyone is."
Hanbin, who was sitting beside Gunwook, spoke again while lifting another glass.
"To be honest, I didn't think he'd be this serious about you."
"Why?"
"Matthew…" Hanbin smiled, his eyes drifting as he thought about the past. "He's dated and dumped so many people. We thought the only person who could handle him was someone like his ex-boyfriend, but that relationship was really toxic. When he said he liked you, I thought it would just be another fling like always."
"What was he like?"
"Just handsome, rich, good at pampering him, and mature. You know Matthew is spoiled. If he suddenly wanted to fly to Punta Cana on a whim, could you make that happen for him?"
Gunwook nodded again, accepting the truth without arguing.
"But sometimes we were wrong. He never let others touch him this much. Once, when he was drunk, I tricked him into telling me about his past boyfriends. The most he'd do was use his mouth or hands. If things went further, he'd break up with them. I don't think it was because he was 'saving himself.' He just never had the patience to endure that kind of pain… no way. Even a single ant bite would have him whining to me all day."
"I don't really want to know about Matthew Hyung's past."
"I'm just saying you're special but he is who he is. His personality… or his 'true colors,' honestly. He's spoiled and self-centered. It's not that he doesn't love you, but he assumes everyone automatically understands what he's thinking." Hanbin looked back at Gunwook and patted his shoulder.
"Don't get bored of him. If there's something you don't understand, ask him directly. Matthew isn't good at explaining himself. Sometimes you have to figure it out on your own."
"I'm just afraid he'll get bored of me first. Sometimes I wonder if I'll end up being the one who gets played instead."
Matthew suddenly walked over, his cheeks still flushed deep red.
"What are you guys talking about?"
Gunwook shook his head. Matthew climbed onto his lap, wrapping his arms around Gunwook's neck and nuzzling him affectionately.
"Let's go to bed. I'm sleepy."
Gunwook hummed in response and helped the birthday boy stand up. He couldn't tell whether Matthew was actually drunk or just acting.
"Are you guys heading upstairs? We'll drink a little more and then head to bed too. Don't worry about us."
Gunwook nodded and carried Matthew upstairs to his room alone.
"Don't you have a birthday gift for me?"
After Gunwook wiped the drunk man's face and went for a quick shower, Matthew sat on the edge of the bed, kicking his feet in the air. He stared at the unopened gifts from his friends.
"Aren't you going to open your gifts, Hyung?"
"Not yet. I want mine from you more."
"What do you want from me?"
The birthday boy smiled with his eyes closed, his cheeks still red from the alcohol. "Maybe Gunwookie tied with a bow, lying naked on the bed?"
"You're cheeky. What would you do if you actually got that?"
"Devour you completely," Matthew said brightly, making Gunwook laugh. Gunwook was shirtless, wrapped in a white towel, his damp upper body covered in water droplets.
"At first, I thought about buying a ring, but I wasn't sure of your size. So I bought underwear instead. I know the size for that at least. I hope you like the color."
Gunwook teased him as he pulled a box from a hidden paper bag and handed it to Matthew.
"Next time, I'll buy a ring for you to wear instead of this."
"Why didn't you just buy it now?" Matthew's face looked shy.
"Today is your birthday, so this is a birthday gift. I'll give you the 'proposal' gift later."
Matthew leaned back against Gunwook's shoulder, his warm breath hitting his skin directly. Matthew seemed even warmer than before. Gunwook hugged him, kissing the top of his head before trailing his nose along his cheek, pressing several soft kisses there. Not heavy, but gentle.
"Matthew..." Gunwook's voice sounded full of desire.
Even though it was Matthew's birthday, Gunwook was the one who felt like he wanted a gift from him. He stared at his lips, aching for one more sweet kiss.
"What was it you said... if you had me lying naked on the bed, what would you do?"
Their eyes locked. At this distance, their voices turned into whispers. Matthew bit his lip but didn't look away. Today, he seemed braver than usual, likely thanks to the wine.
"Devour you," Matthew whispered breathlessly, narrowing his eyes in challenge.
"Do you want to devour me now?"
Gunwook looked down at his lips again. A moment later, his own lips replaced them. There was a faint scent of menthol mixed with fine wine on the tip of his tongue.
The bed sank under their weight. Gunwook placed a hand on Matthew's cheek while they continued to kiss. Matthew trailed his palms over his back, stroking everywhere. Gunwook held him close, wrapping his entire body around him, refusing to let him go.
"Wait... ugh..." Gunwook didn't let him protest, pulling back just long enough for him to catch his breath before kissing him again. "I-I thought I was supposed to devour you. Why are you acting like you're the one swallowing me up?"
"It's the same thing," Gunwook said while unbuttoning his shirt. "Otherwise, why would they call it 'becoming one'?"
"You talk too much."
"You started the conversation, Matthew."
"Just do it."
Gunwook pulled his hand up to kiss it, staring into Matthew's eyes. "Are you willing?"
"If I weren't, I wouldn't be lying here letting you poke me with that thing."
Gunwook laughed. "It's hard because of you."
"I know," Matthew said. "And I'm going to help it go down right now."
Gunwook nodded, nuzzling his neck before returning to his lips. Matthew writhed as Gunwook's fingertips brushed against his chest. As soon as their lips parted, Gunwook's tongue began to explore him eagerly. Faint moans escaped his lips. Gunwook massaged his smooth skin spot by spot, followed by slow, lingering kisses.
When the timing was right, he slid his already turned on member inside, pinning Matthew's shoulders down as he whispered into his ear.
"My love."
Matthew went still and closed his eyes. His face contorted slightly, but it wasn't as difficult as the first time. They kissed each other again and again. As soon as Matthew's lids lifted, Gunwook smiled. As he moved deeper, Matthew lunged forward to hug him tightly.
"G-Gunwook..."
"Yeah?"
"It's tight."
Matthew cried out, his voice sounding piteous, like someone who deserved to be bullied. Gunwook kissed his brow several times. Sweat rolled down from Matthew's neck onto his cheek, and Gunwook trailed after it, catching the droplets with his lips. His cheeks, his nose, his mouth, all of them. As Matthew became more lost in pleasure, Gunwook pushed himself deeper.
"Ahh, G-Gunwook!"
Gunwook loved the way Matthew called his name. It was a soft, trembling whisper that sounded like he was on the verge of tears. He moved his lips down to Matthew's neck and shoulders. The touch was light but profound, focusing more on emotion than simply finishing quickly like before. Matthew gripped Gunwook's shoulders tightly. This position made it easy for them to kiss. They kissed each other repeatedly, as if they wanted to swallow each other's lips whole.
"Gunwook..." Matthew called again between gasps, occasionally letting out a moan. Gunwook looked at his body, covered in sweat. He looked so beautiful. Matthew's shoulders moved up and down in rhythm, sometimes short, sometimes long, as Gunwook moved his hips.
Matthew's brown hair was splayed across the pillow. His beautiful face was deep red, and even his fair skin matched the hue. His eyes were glazed, and his lips were parted as he pleaded for mercy while Gunwook moved deeper and deeper.
The sight before him was driving Gunwook crazy. They locked eyes as they moved, taking turns calling each other's names in pleasure.
"Matthew, I'm coming."
"M-Me too."
Gunwook released himself inside him, this time without protection. Matthew followed soon after.
"Gunwook."
Matthew called out through heavy breaths. Gunwook hummed in response but didn't withdraw immediately. He only kissed Matthew's sweat-dampened hair before leaning down to press their foreheads together. They both laughed.
"We finished at the same time."
"Am I getting worse, or are you getting better?"
"Both," Matthew smiled as Gunwook poked his red cheek.
"Not shy this time?"
"A little, but it's not like before."
"When you kicked me out of the room?"
"I just didn't know how to act."
"Matthew," Gunwook said in a serious tone before leaning down to kiss him. "You're mine now."
"That's cringe."
"I'm telling the truth. I let my 'kids' inside this time. Who knows, maybe you'll get pregnant."
"Very funny. Do you want to be kicked out again?"
"If I went out now, your friends would tease us to death."
"Don't get too close to them. They have bad personalities."
Gunwook didn't answer and simply kissed his lips again.
"I haven't had enough."
"That's enough. We have work tomorrow."
"In that case, can we do it again tomorrow?"
Matthew didn't answer. Instead, he trailed his fingertips along Gunwook's shoulder. Matthew smiled but didn't stop him when they kissed again.
"Gunwook... I think I know now why I like you."
Gunwook arched an eyebrow.
"Maybe I've been craving acceptance from someone for a long time. Being with you is comfortable. It's like I'm not the 'little brother' who constantly needs looking after. You scold me, you look down on me, you tell me I'm not important, but you've never let go of my hand or left me to face bad things alone. Even though I was terrible to you when we first met, you were still thick-skinned enough to keep teaching me. And after you scold me, you always come back to appease me like a child who feels guilty for being rude to an elder. How could I stay mad at you?"
"You're cute... and I think I fell in love with you because of that." Matthew's cheeks turned red again, and he looked away for a split second before looking back.
"Thank you. For everything." Matthew's small hand rested on Gunwook's cheek. At that moment, Matthew looked more pinchable than ever. His body was still warm, and his deep voice had softened.
"You're the best gift I've ever had, Gunwookie."
Gunwook kissed his palm.
What Matthew said was exactly what Gunwook had been thinking too. Matthew was also the best gift he had ever received.
"Let's clean up and sleep."
Matthew whined at first but then agreed since it felt too sticky down there. After they finished showering and exchanging 'birthday gifts' again in the shower, they lay down on the bed, cuddling each other.
"Matthew."
"I love you."
"I love you too, Gunwookie."
Images of their first meeting flashed through Gunwook's mind from when they were children. Every time Matthew came to the vineyard, he would bring a large bag of snacks, throw them at Gunwook's face, and say they were leftovers he wanted to throw away.
At first, Gunwook thought Matthew was just shy and wanted to play but didn't know how to express it properly. But as time passed, he thought Matthew hated him.
After spending time together again after all those years, everything turned upside down. Gunwook realized that Matthew had never truly hated him back then, and of course not now either. Their feelings had steadily grown until they became impossible to deny. They both felt the same way.
Gunwook felt beyond lucky to have Matthew in his arms, sleeping beside him right now. He couldn't imagine a life without him.
I hope we can stay like this, holding each other for eternity.
The End.
