“Can I give you a ride home?”
The gentle question reverberates in Maddy’s head as they ride together in silence. Kitty, true to her name, is curled up in the backseat with Snowflake the poodle, both of them fast asleep already.
It had been a hell of a night.
But Bishop has a calm, steady, energy about him that intrigues Maddy.
There's something in her that inherently feels safe around him and although she can’t explain it, she feels drawn to him.
The car is silent but for the hum of the engine and the occasional “Turn left here,”, “Keep going straight for a while,” from Maddy.
Bishop silently regards her from the corner of his eye, thinking to himself that she has to be the most fascinating person he has ever met.
From what little he knows about her, she is, first and foremost, the most beautiful woman he has ever seen. And that was saying something. He had spent the last few years surrounded by the most beautiful women you could imagine, in every shape and size you could ever ask for.
And yet, Maddy’s beauty had struck him harder than any woman he had encountered thus far. More fascinating still, her beauty was the least interesting thing about her- whatever was inside her head intrigued him more. She's brilliant. Confident. Direct. Loyal.
Each word from her lips captivates him more.
He thinks all of this in pensive silence, only turning to fully face her at a red light on a quiet intersection.
He regards her.
She stares back.
She doesn't break the silence, only raises her eyebrows and juts out her chin in a silent “What the fuck are you looking at?” sort of gesture.
“Oh,” he says, pointing at his own face. “You have a little, uh,” he gestures at his lip.
She was bleeding slightly from the corner of her mouth.
He reaches in his pocket for a neatly folded handkerchief, holding it in the space between them in a silent question.
Her eyes lower to the handkerchief before meeting his gaze again. She doesn’t take the handkerchief from his hand, only holds his eyes. Daring him.
After hesitating a moment, he raises the handkerchief to the still-wet blood, wiping it away from her lips in one smooth motion.
He lowers his arm back to the center console, his eyes sliding from her lips back up to her large brown eyes.
The tension in the car hangs heavily between them.
“Um… the light’s green,” chimes in a small voice from the backseat.
Maddy and Bishop both glance toward Kitty in the backseat, then simultaneously turn to face forward before Bishop presses the gas.
A few moments later, Maddy and Bishop glance back at each other, a flicker of a smile on each of their faces.
They glide forward into the night.
