After Finney escaped the basement his father promised to never drink again and that he’ll become a better father.
Terrence kept that promise for a month until he got drunk after an especially tiring day at work.
On his drive home he got into a car accident and died on impact.
Finney and Gwen were then put in foster care for a few years before splitting ways when they got adopted by different families.
Finney was adopted by his aunt and uncle who lived in Indiana, they demanded he stopped all contact with Gwen because they were embarrassed of Terrance’s actions and didn’t want any connection to what happened in Denver.
As an attempt to forget his past Finney changed his name into Stephen, his middle name. As well as switching his last name from Blake to Harrington so he would not raise any questions on why he has a different last name than his “parents.”
Steve eventually made new friends and changed his entire personality, becoming something he promised to never become, his bullies.
No one in Hawkins, Indiana knew about Steve’s past except for his “parents” who were never around anyways.
