PART ONE: The Man Who Died In An Alley
Draco Malfoy, As He Was
The rooms above Knotgrass Apothecary on the far end of Knockturn Alley were not, by any stretch, comfortable. The ceiling was low and the walls wept in November, and there was a smell — not unpleasant, exactly, more specific — of dried herbs and mildew and the kind of accumulated alchemical residue that soaked into old timber over decades and became indistinguishable from the timber itself.
Draco had lived there for four years and had become indistinguishable from it in certain respects.
He was twenty-four. He was thin in the way of people who consider food primarily as fuel, pale in the way of someone who works indoors by lamplight more often than sunlight, and tired in the low-grade chronic way that was so familiar it registered only during the brief periods when it lifted — when a particularly successful synthesis came together, or when Master Parveen said good work, that in the specific flat tone that she reserved for things that were genuinely impressive, and the exhaustion retreated a few steps, and Draco remembered that he was good at this.
He was very good at this.
He had not expected to be good at this. He had been the boy who'd scraped an Exceeds Expectations in potions under Snape, which had been considered a failure by the Malfoy household's standards. The war had happened, and then the trials, and then the years of rebuilding, and somewhere in the wreckage of all of that he had discovered that potions, unlike most things in his life, did not care what your name was. They responded to attention, to precision, to the ability to stay with a complicated process for eight hours without losing focus. These were things Draco happened to be good at.
He had arrived at Master Parveen's door at twenty, with his father's name a liability and his mother's careful savings enough to cover the first year's apprenticeship fee, and she had looked at him for a long moment and said: show me your hands.
He'd extended them, bewildered.
She'd looked at them — the steadiness of them, the length of the fingers, the calluses that were already forming in exactly the right places from the mortar work he'd been doing on his own. Then she'd said: all right. Don't embarrass me.
He hadn't.
Malfoy money was mostly gone. What remained was carefully managed by his mother, who had survived the war's aftermath with the same composure she'd brought to everything and who wrote to Draco every week in a small precise hand, never mentioning that the family seat was under financial lien, never mentioning his father's increasingly diminished public life, always asking about his work and whether he was eating enough and whether the dampness was bothering him.
He wrote back faithfully and lied about the eating.
He took his meals mostly at a narrow table beside the window — bread and whatever he could afford from the market at the end of the week, occasionally a hot meal from the cookhouse three streets over when he'd had a good month. He drank too much tea and not enough of anything else. He slept on a cot that was too short by four inches and had developed, after four years of this, a relationship with his own back pain that could only be described as resigned companionship.
This was the Draco Malfoy who existed before. It is worth establishing because the versions of him that come after are easier to understand if you know where he started.
He was not happy, exactly, but he was — building. That was the word. Rebuilding from rubble, brick by brick, with the stubborn attention that was the best thing about him and possibly the only thing about him that had survived the war entirely intact.
He also read the society pages when nobody was watching, and folded them small afterward.
The Prophet didn't carry them frequently — they were a frivolity, in the lean post-war years, and Barnabas Cuffe had other priorities. But occasionally, when the reconstruction efforts had produced something worth celebrating, or when a notable marriage or birth had occurred, there would be a small column tucked into the back pages with a photograph.
Harry Potter and his wife, Ginevra, née Weasley, welcome their first child: James Sirius Potter, born in good health. The couple are reported to be—
Draco had looked at the photograph for a long time.
Harry, caught mid-laugh at something off-frame, was holding a red-haired newborn with the careful disbelieving wonder of someone who can't quite believe they're being trusted with this. Ginny beside him was radiant and exhausted and looking at the baby with an expression so nakedly tender that Draco felt like a voyeur for seeing it. The baby had a full shock of red hair even in the black and white newsprint — dark-tipped and fine, unmistakably Weasley-red.
James Sirius, Draco had thought. James, for his father. Sirius, for his godfather. He'd known those names — gathered them from the war, from the trials, from the reports that everyone had read whether they admitted it or not. Harry Potter's great lost family: the father killed before Harry could remember, the godfather killed before Harry had gotten enough time with him. Named, both of them, into the next generation by a man who couldn't let go of his dead.
Draco had folded the page very small. He had put it in the breast pocket of his work robe. He had carried it for eight days — past the point where it had become ridiculous, past the point where he could pretend he wasn't doing it — and then on the ninth day he had taken it out and looked at Harry Potter's laughing face and felt the thing in his chest that he kept very carefully locked, and then he had put it in the fire and watched it burn.
He was not sixteen anymore. He was not the boy who had made a dozen stupid decisions for a dozen stupid reasons, including the reason he had never examined. He was twenty-four and tired and rebuilding from rubble, and Harry Potter had a wife and a son and an expression like that, and the locked room was going to stay locked.
That had been six months before the alley.
What Happened In The Alley
It was a Tuesday. He had been to Slug & Jiggers to collect a delivery — a particular grade of dittany that Master Parveen sourced from a specific supplier, three times a year, which required a signed receipt and personal collection. He was heading back through the late-afternoon foot traffic of Diagon Alley, the package under his arm, thinking about the synthesis he'd left cooling on the worktable, when the first curse hit him from the side.
There were three of them in the alley behind Slug & Jiggers. He hadn't seen their faces — masks, Death Eater masks, worn now out of ideology rather than affiliation because there was no one left to affiliate with. They had waited. They had known his route, which meant they'd been watching, which meant this was specific and personal and not an opportunity that had presented itself by chance.
Traitor, one of them said. The voice was male and young and certain in the way that only people with a simple story could be. Your father served the Dark Lord and you brew potions for Mudbloods. You stand there and accept their pardons and you smile at their world and you—
Draco disarmed the one on the left. He was rather proud of that, even as his back hit the cobblestones from the first curse — a wandless summoning, the instinct of someone who had trained under emergency conditions, who had lived through a war, who had never entirely stopped being the boy who'd been handed an impossible task at sixteen and had survived it through sheer desperate resourcefulness. He got the left one's wand.
The second curse came from the right. He didn't quite block it.
The third he didn't block at all.
The cobblestones were cold. The sky above Diagon Alley — he could see only a strip of it from where he'd fallen, framed by the high walls of the alley — was the particular grey of late October, a grey that was specifically and precisely the colour of autumn in London, familiar and final. He was bleeding from somewhere he couldn't see, which he knew meant the warmth spreading beneath him was blood and the warmth meant it was bad.
Funny, he thought, with the detached clarity of someone who had studied enough Dark curse damage to catalogue their own symptoms. I always thought I'd die more dramatically. I thought there'd be more — something. That it would feel like something.
It didn't. Mainly it hurt, and then the hurt was going somewhere, and the strip of grey sky was getting brighter somehow, which wasn't how brightness worked at the end of a day, and then—
The thing in his chest. The locked room. He thought, in the last moment, that it seemed stupid to go without—
James Sirius, he thought. He looked so small in the photograph. I hope he grows up—
The grey went white. The white went something that wasn't a colour. Draco Malfoy, apprentice potion master, closed his eyes.
He did not expect to open them.
PART TWO: The Impossible Ceiling
Inventory of a Strange Room
The ceiling was timber — old, dark, the beams hand-hewn and showing the marks of the tools that had made them. From the beams hung dried herbs on twisted twine: rosemary and feverfew and something he would later identify as meadowsweet and something sharper, medicinal, that he couldn't place immediately. The herbs swayed very slightly in the warm air rising from somewhere below, and the candlelight moved across the ceiling in a slow drift, and it was — it was beautiful, actually, in an absolute and uncalculated way, the kind of beauty that required no decision about whether to acknowledge it.
He noticed this before he noticed anything else, and afterward he would think it was because his mind was trying to be somewhere gentle before it had to be somewhere true.
Then the next thing arrived, and it was the pain.
It was unlike anything in his catalogued experience. He had been cursed, had experienced spell damage, had treated himself for minor potion burns and sustained one major one in his second year of apprenticeship that had taken six weeks and extensive draughts to manage. Pain, in his experience, was specific and located — it came from a place and told you something about the place.
This pain had no location. Or rather, it had too many: it came from everywhere at once, from his lower back and his hips and his abdomen and something deeper than any of those, something that reorganised the word inside and made him understand it differently. It came in a wave — rising and tightening, a great rolling wave of contraction, and then—
Contraction.
The word arrived in his mind with the particular quality of information that brings everything else with it.
"Push," said a woman's voice. "My lord, please. You must push now."
He turned his head. He was in a bed — a very large bed, four-posted, curtained in dark green velvet that pooled onto a stone floor. The stone floor. The bed was sitting on a stone floor. The room around him was large and low-lit by candles that were in brackets on the stone walls, and the women around the bed were dressed in linen and wool that were not fashionable, that were not the fashion of any period in Draco's personal experience, that were in fact the fashion of approximately seven hundred years ago.
He looked down.
He was wearing a linen shift, pushed up around his hips. He was — he was very clearly — he was enormously, impossibly, indisputably with child.
I am dead, Draco thought, with the calm of someone who had already processed that and moved on. This is some variety of afterlife. Possibly a punishment. This would track.
The wave of pain came again and rational thought ceased to be an option. His body — this body, wherever it had come from, whoever it had belonged to — knew exactly what to do, and it did it without consulting him, and Draco, who had spent six years imposing his will on uncooperative material through sheer precision and stubbornness, discovered that some processes were simply larger than will.
He pushed.
The room became white-hot and endless and animal, and then—
Then, cutting through everything else like a blade through silk: a cry.
High and indignant and achingly, unmistakably, furiously alive.
Draco fell back against the pillows. He was gasping. His whole body felt like a cloth that had been wrung and not smoothed out afterward. He was sweating and shaking and more exhausted than he had been after anything in his life, including surviving a war.
"A son," said one of the women, and her professional composure had a warmth in it she wasn't quite suppressing. "My lord. A healthy son. He is strong."
They lifted the child. They placed him on Draco's chest.
He was red-faced. He was wrinkled in the way of something very recently arrived in the world and not yet reconciled to it. He was furious — visibly, comprehensively furious, fists clenched at his cheeks, face scrunched against the indignity of existence — and he had, improbably, definitively, a shock of red hair. Dark-tipped at the ends, fine as silk, and red. The particular deep warm red that Draco associated, with the precision of someone who had spent six months not looking at a photograph, with the Weasley family.
Draco stared at the red hair.
It is a punishment, he thought. This is definitely a punishment.
And then the baby opened his eyes — unfocused, as newborn eyes always were, dark blue-grey in the way that would settle into something else eventually — and looked in Draco's approximate direction with the total lack of guile of something that had not yet learned to be anything other than exactly itself, and Draco's chest did the thing.
The locked room. He felt it happen — not slowly, not as a considered decision, but as the sudden release of something that had been under enormous pressure for an enormous time. It went all at once, the door, and what came through it was not what he would have predicted. It was not Harry. It was not the grief of his other life or the fear of this impossible one.
It was this child. This specific, red-haired, furious, real child, whom he had apparently just birthed into a world he had no map for, and who was looking in his direction as though Draco was the most relevant object in existence.
Hello, Draco thought. His throat was very tight. I don't know what's happening. I'm sorry I don't know. I'll try to figure it out.
"My lord." The attendant had ink and parchment. "The child's name, for the record."
Draco looked at the red hair.
He thought of a newspaper he had burned.
He thought of James Sirius, the names that had already been earned — James for the father lost too young, Sirius for the godfather lost too young, both of them given to a child whose father had grieved them quietly for his whole life without ever, as far as Draco had witnessed, making a performance of it.
He thought: this child should have those names. He should carry them. Not because the names explained anything about how Draco came to be here or what this life was, but because they were right in the way that Draco's best potions were right — the kind of rightness that preceded justification, that you felt in the actual substance of things.
"James," he said. His voice was wrecked and steady at once, which was a combination he hadn't known was possible. "James Sirius." A breath. "Potter."
The attendant wrote it down without a flicker.
Draco held his son — James Sirius Potter, who had never existed before this moment, and who was apparently going to, regardless — and the dried rosemary swayed in the rafters, and outside a window he had never seen before today, the sky was a particular shade of early-autumn grey.
All right, he thought. All right. I'm not dead. I'm somewhere. I'm going to need to understand where.
James Sirius Potter made a small sound of opinion about the world and then, with abrupt finality, stopped being furious about existing and went to sleep on Draco's chest.
Right then, Draco thought. Let's start from the beginning.
What He Learned In The First Week
In the first week, he learned the following things:
The attendants called him my lord Draco and addressed everything to him with a deference that was second nature to them, which meant this was not a new arrangement and therefore Lord Draco was an established person with an established position in an established household. He had — he — the body he was in, the life he was wearing — was Lord Draco Potter, née Malfoy, and the household was Godric's Hollow Manor, and this was a large stone manor house in a part of England that the magic-using community had been settled in for approximately a thousand years.
His husband's name was Harry.
He absorbed this information from the attendants by listening very carefully and asking nothing directly, which was one of those skills that poverty had taught him and that he was grateful for now. A man who asked his own attendants where he was and who he was married to would quickly have questions of his own to answer, and Draco was not ready for those questions.
Nurse Pomfrey — small, sharp, possessed of opinions she expressed freely regardless of social hierarchy — told him he needed to rest, that the birth had gone longer than ideal and that his magical core would be depleted for some weeks yet, that male pregnancy always taxed more than a natural female pregnancy and that he should not be pushing his recovery. She said this with the brisk authority of someone who had attended multiple generations of Potters and did not find the requirements of their dignity particularly interesting.
Male pregnancy, Draco noted, filing it. Magic facilitates male pregnancy in this world. His magical core is depleted afterward. Important.
His room was — extraordinary. He had been lying in it for a week before he fully absorbed what it was, because his first days had been occupied entirely by the baby and the recovery and the enormous project of understanding where he was. But on the seventh day, when the attendants had drawn back the curtains of the south-facing windows and the autumn sunlight came in across the stone floors and the Turkish carpet and the tapestry on the south wall — a hunting scene in deep green and ochre, centuries old, and clearly masterful — he had looked around the room properly for the first time and felt the ground tilt.
This was wealth. Not the performed wealth of his childhood, the Malfoy wealth that announced itself in every surface and required you to know what you were looking at to understand what it meant. This was older. The stones of the floor were worn smooth by generations of feet. The window glass was imperfect, wavy, the genuine old glass that you couldn't replicate, that had been made by hand centuries ago. The curtains were velvet — deep Gryffindor red, which he was going to have to process — and the light through the old glass made strange beautiful patterns on them.
He had lived for four years above a Knockturn apothecary with tallow candles and a cot that was four inches too short.
He breathed through the vertigo of it. He held James, who was a reliable anchor for the vertigo, because James was extremely real and immediate and demanding in ways that didn't leave room for existential spiral. He breathed.
An owl arrived on the seventh day.
It came through the small window above the writing desk — a large tawny owl with the self-possessed air of a creature accustomed to importance — and landed on the desk's edge and extended its leg, and Draco looked at it for a moment and then got up and went to it, carefully, because standing up quickly still required a word with himself, and took the letter.
The seal was silver: a serpent swallowing its own tail. He knew it, from his other world, from the fear of it — the Dark Mark's cousin, the King's own sigil, Riddle.
He broke the seal with steady hands and read:
Lord Potter. We are pleased to learn of the birth of your first son. The realm's congratulations are extended. We observe, with interest, that the child has not yet been presented at court. We remind you that all heirs of noble houses are to be presented before our throne. We look forward to the occasion.

He stood at the writing desk for a long time, holding the letter.
King Tom Riddle, then. He had understood this, from the attendants' careful references — his Majesty's arrangement, the King's pleasure, as his Majesty has decreed — but seeing the signature made it concrete in a way that the circumspect references hadn't.
He thought: I am in a world where Voldemort won. Where he rules. And Harry — my husband in the next corridor somewhere — is here, disguised as a minor country lord. And I am here too, as his husband, as Lucius Malfoy's son deployed as a political tool.
He thought: And I named their child James Sirius Potter.
He sat down carefully at the desk. He pulled a sheet of parchment toward him and unstoppered the ink, and then he stopped.
He didn't know his husband's handwriting. He didn't know his own handwriting, in this body, except that his hands felt like his hands — the same steadiness, the same calluses in almost-the-same-places, close enough.
He drafted a reply to the King's letter that was three sentences of courteous acknowledgement, neither servile nor pointed, and sealed it with his own ring — the Potter ring, heavy gold on his right hand, a seal he pressed into wax with the careful authority of someone who had been doing this for years and was simply too depleted to do it differently today.
Then he drafted a note to the manor's head housekeeper requesting a complete inventory of the household's medicinal stores.
He was going to need to understand what he had to work with.
