CONTEXT DOC - Morgana & Arthur Gender Fuckery AU
Summary:
READ FIRST FOR SERIES CONTEXT!
Since (for the time being) I'll be posting this series as multiple disjointed scenes, here is some basic context that should help keep up with who's who and what's what. I've avoided as many actual plot spoilers as possible, however Chapter 3 does have quite a few (it's labeled)—though if you're familiar with Arthurian myth then certain bits may be obvious.
Chapter 1: Names, Pronouns, & the Gender Situation
Chapter Text
- AFAB Arthur = Artie (she/her); later becomes Arthur (he/him)
- Artie is short for “Artemisia”, but she hates it and only Uther calls her that or when it’s title-related.
- Eventually the egg cracks (ftm) and he starts going by “Arthur” consistently, though as Artie she’d already been using “Arthur” as a secret identity to join tournaments for years before that—“Arthur” is her name, that she chose, and she’s quite possessive over it—so when he comes out, his name is already chosen. It’s already his and always has been.
- Narratively, Artie’s/Arthur’s pronoun use will reflect where she/he is in the gender journey. Artie is always she/her, it goes back and forth in public and private when Artie/Arthur starts presenting as masculine more consistently for plot reasons (not yet personal reasons, but it hits the gender euphoria mark), and then fully out-of-the-closet Arthur is always he/him.
- AFAB Merlin = Merlin (varies, but preferably they/them)
- No name change here because (imo) their name is already unisex lmao
- Genderqueer/Nonbinary
- Merlin in this series is very…practical? about their gender presentation. They prefer the fluidity of options and sometimes have “man/woman/neither/both days”, but don’t really bring it up unless it’s necessary, safe, and/or directly asked.
- As such, early in the narrative Merlin’s primarily using she/her as it means less questions/complications as Artie's maidservant in Camelot, later in the narrative Merlin starts using he/him as he and Arthur are traveling, and once Arthur comes out and they have a whole conversation about their respective genders, Merlin uses they/them privately + he/him publicly.
- AMAB Morgana = Morgan (he/him)
- Cis man, but starts presenting with a little more fluidity once he starts using magic openly (I’m gonna be real with y’all, I just couldn’t give up all of Morgana’s canon wardrobe).
- AMAB Guinevere/Gwen = Gwynn (he/him)
- As of right now (04Jun’26), no one else is getting gender-swapped.
