Chapter Text

Vladimir Dracula was a person of the past, well more like a vampire from the past if he wanted to get technical. The day after his eighteenth birthday he packed his bags and moved as far away as he could, which happened to be in Pittsburgh.

He was determined to make a life for himself, a life not defined by being ‘the chosen one.’ So he went to medical school, if he could distract himself with work, then he would have no time to think about the dangers he may have put his kind in, or how his family may have reacted when they realised he had run off. Everything was going great, he had changed his name, started working in emergency medicine (odd pick for a vampire, being surrounded by blood all the time, but he makes it work,) made new friends, he even got himself not one boyfriend, but two. Not in the cheating way that it sounds, more in a polyamory way. Although his friends, mostly Trinity, were skeptical at first, Jack and Robby proved themselves worthy and they were all very happy.

Of course the vampiric traits still got in the way but he played most of it off. Nobody questioned him when he said he was from England rather than Transylvania, or why he never spoke to his family anymore, people just assumed it was complicated and left it alone. His cravings never went away, being surrounded by breathers all day definitely wasn’t helping, but he refused to give in.

One morning, he had slept over at his boyfriends’ house. He and Robby were on day shift, an odd choice for a vampire with the whole ‘can’t touch the sun’ thing, but he always left before the sun rose to not raise suspicion. Dennis had wanted more than anything to tell Jack and Robby his secret, but the thought of them leaving in fear that he would go manic and bite them was stronger than his urge to tell them the truth. He was good at switching the topic when his family came up, to Robby and Jack’s knowledge, he had an absent mother, a father, and a sister. They knew about Robin because Dennis sent him a letter the day he left Garside Grange, so now they meet up and talk on the regular. Robin was the only one present in his life who knew his secret. Santos was close to finding out when he freaked out at Olive Garden over the garlic bread that she ordered. He ran off claiming he’s deathly allergic, which wasn’t really a lie. All in all, his life was the best it had ever been, he hadn’t thought about the school he used to live in, Stokley, or even Transylvania in a while. He probably should have.

“Mikeeeeeee!” Dennis groaned when his alarm blared in the morning. Robby did nothing but slightly stir. “Micheal!”
“Shhhhhh i’m up i’m up.” Robby sat up and wiped the sleep from his eyes. He kissed Dennis on his temple before hopping out of their bed. He walked into the kitchen, where a letter addressed to “Vladimir Dracula” was sitting on their countertop. Confused and groggy, he had just assumed it was addressed to the wrong person and left it for Jack to deal with when he got home.
A few minutes later, Dennis walked out of the bedroom wearing one of Jack’s army sweatshirts and a pair of grey sweatshorts. He was scratching the back of his head until the letter stopped him dead in his tracks.
“What the fuck?” He mumbled to himself, eyes practically popping out of his head, the only person who knows him by that name is Robin, and even he has been addressing him as Dennis Whitaker upon request. “Robby, w-who sent this? Where did this come from?” If his heart could beat, it would be going a thousand beats per minute.

“Uh I don’t know, it was sitting here when I came out, must’ve sent it to the wrong person.” He said casually until he looked up to see a very nervous Dennis pointing a shaking hand to the letter. “Den, are you okay?”
Dennis was so caught up in his own mind, he didn’t even hear Robby before he grabbed the letter and ripped it open. He hadn’t even heard himself let out a small whimper when he read the first words.

Dearest Vlady,

How long did you think you could disappear before I found you?
I will see you soon son.
Count Dracula

Dennis found tears falling from his face, he couldn’t rip his eyes off the paper. He hadn’t seen his father in almost 17 years, and here he is calling him “Vlady.” He honestly didn’t think he would search for him, let alone send him a letter. Suddenly, he felt a pair of hands shaking him by the shoulders.
“Dennis, what's going on? Are you alright? Do I need to call Jack?”
Dennis finally tore his eyes off the paper and looked up to see Robby in front of him, eyebrows furrowed with worry.
“Yeah sorry I just uh, spaced out for a second but I'm back I’m good.” He shot a not-so-convincing smile as he crumpled the letter in his pockets and ran to get dressed for work.

The radio was playing an old rock song that Dennis had never heard of, but Robby was humming along as they drove to work. Robby hated how early Dennis left for work, but he knows it’s stupid to drive separately so he deals with it anyways. The quiet was broken by Robby.
“Hey I know you said you were alright but you seemed really shaken up by that letter, is Vladimir a friend of yours?” Robby didn’t take his eyes off the road but his hands pressed harder into the steering wheel when he talked.
“No I-I’m all good really, I don’t know who wrote the letter, thought I might take it to uhm, send it back in the mail so it can be sent to the right house.” Smooth. He thought to himself.
“I don’t believe you, but I’m tired so I'll let it slide.”
Dennis just snorted and closed his eyes.

The day was normal, he took mostly easy cases, he felt he deserved it after this morning. Dana would’ve given him so much shit if she knew he was cherry picking, but she also would give him shit if she knew he was a secret vampire living off of fake blood he gets off some shady website. So he ignored the guilt. He had just finished suturing a woman's arm when his heart sank to his feet, because standing in the waiting room was Count Dracula, his father.
