Work Text:

Wemmbu was awake on watch for the night.

Eggchan and Codmaster were asleep in a tangle of their own limbs, their armor was shedded in a pile next to them. It was as if they were trying desperately to leech off the other's warmth despite neither giving off body heat.

Yungy was hardly asleep. Sitting up at almost every noise with frantic eyes. His armor would echo through the underground every time he laid back down. He somehow never once awoke the others from their own slumbers.

Jaden was snoring softly in a boat that had been tied to the fishing loot chest, his hat sat over his eyes and his limbs rested awkwardly over the boat's gunwale. He had said that it made him sleep easier, that it reminded him of being out to sea. He slept undisturbed throughout the whole night, in the morning he'd say that it was because he was used to sleeping through the sea's worst of rackets.

Soon enough, when Wemmbu wakes everyone up to go to the center, this peacefulness will be but a small, distant memory to him. But right now —as the furnace burns through the last of its fuel and cavefish lazily float by unperturbed by the wardens hiding beneath them— he can forget about his worries and just simply admire the water.

Notes:

Was super inspired by The Two Headed Calf by Laura Gilpin while writing this! I adore that poem
