Chapter Text
Autumn was colder than usual this year, usually the remains of summer would linger throughout the beginning of fall but it’s almost like it disappeared all of a sudden when the new academic year began. Yellow Wood College of Performing Arts was a prestigious school with its history of awards and once teaching famous singers, actors and performers.
It was a miracle that Jeongin managed to secure a place at Yellow Wood, especially on a scholarship, the acceptance letter now framed and hung above the living room mantle at his parent’s house. A symbol of pride for their family. His family wasn’t wealthy like most of the students at Yellow Wood but they weren’t poor either, a decently put together middle-class family from Busan.
The first day was always the most nerve-wracking, Jeongin now stood outside of the gates that lead to the main campus – map and timetable clutched tightly in his hands. Anxiously, he re-read his Tuesday timetable once more and triple-checked the route to his first lesson. Intro to Performative Singing; Facility V, Room 3B with Prof, Lee.
With a deep breath he set off, beaten up vans scuffing against concrete paths as he navigated towards his first lecture of the day, of the school year, of college. He managed to get to facility V just fine, but figuring out where room 3B was a much greater challenge. The building was a large maze of bricks, with what felt like a million doors and thousands of signs. Jeongin spent a good twenty five minutes searching just to realise he had walked past it about a dozen times because the three on the sign had been scratched off.
With all that frantic searching made him 10 minutes late to the lecture, bashfully he walked in and noticed that everyone had already made it and the Professor was just about to finish attendance;
“Yang Jeongin,” Professor Lee called.
“Present! Apologies for being late, I had trouble finding the lecture hall..” he explained with a red face before he scrambled up the hall steps to find an absent seat.
“No worries, we’ve all been there.” Lee reassured gently, his voice smooth with confidence.
Jeongin nodded, now sat in the first row furthest seat to the left which just happened to be directly in front of the Professor’s desk. Lee finished off attendance and walked over to his desk to grab a projector remote, their eyes met for a brief moment – Jeongin’s directed away as soon as they met – Professor Lee’s lingered for a few moments before starting with the presentation.
“Just a small introduction of myself before we go ahead and begin, I’m Professor Lee Minho, please address me as Professor Lee or Sir and I’ll be your lecturer for the rest of the academic year. I offer extra curricular tutoring outside of class hours for those who have a grade of 70% or lower, a small reminder that the passing grade is 75%.”
Quiet gasps spread throughout the lecture hall, Professor Lee shook his head with a short laugh, “Don’t act like you didn’t realise when you read the initial syllabus. Yes, this course is tough but so is the entertainment industry, in fact 75% is lightwork for most famous singers you see on TV.”
He walked over to the center of the small stage at the front of the room, “We have an annual scouting performance where companies across the globe come and watch students showcase their talents, ideally if you even want to be considered you’re looking at aiming for 90% or higher. Yes, 90%.”
Professor Lee explained it as if it was common knowledge, easily achievable. Jeongin bit his bottom lip anxiously, yes he realised the passing grade was 75% but 90% seemed way too harsh…
“If you think you can’t manage the pressure to reach 75% let alone 90% by the end of this lecture, I recommend switching majors with our Student Support team. Now, carrying on.”
—
“That’ll be all for today, like I said the initial orientation of Performative Singing for subject majors only is on Thursday at 2:10pm. For those who do want to continue with this major I strongly suggest showing up.” Minho picked up a couple of sheets of paper from his desk to straighten them and place them back down.
“You’re dismissed.” Students began to pack up and file out, murmuring about dropping the major, how Professor Lee was too calm about this to the point it was almost unsettling.
Jeongin – still placing his laptop into his messenger bag – knew this course was intense but it had been his dream for as long as he could remember, he couldn’t give up. Just as he was about to walk out of the lecture hall a voice called for him;
“Yang Jeongin, a word please.”
Jeongin froze, what had he done already? Yes he was late, but it was forgiven, right? He said it was okay… Nervously, he turned around and shuffled his way over to the Professor’s desk, “Yes Sir?”
Lee was now sat in his office chair, glasses low on his nose bridge, he scooted forward in his seat to lean against the table, “I just wanted to say, I hope you’re not considering dropping this course. I personally looked over your application and I must say, you truly have a lot of potential, you have such a unique vocal tone,” Jeongin blushed and nodded dumbly,
“If you manage to keep up with the written portion of this major I am positive you will be scouted by at least one entertainment company.” he finished with a smile, looking up at Jeongin.
“I– Oh, thank you for believing in me Sir, it means a lot to me! I will do my best in this class.” Jeongin grinned brightly, braces showing.
Minho blinked for a moment before nodding, “Of course, now head along don’t be late for your next lecture. We don’t want this becoming a habit, do we?”
“No Sir, Thank you!” With a simple bow of respect Jeongin was off to his next lecture of the day leaving Professor Lee alone in the hall.
The door was shut, he had no more lectures until the early afternoon. Minho leant back in his chair sighing dreamily as his right hand drifted its way down to his throbbing crotch. Just the glimpse of Jeongin’s braces made him fill out in his slacks, how innocent he looked when he smiled as Minho complimented him — fuck if only he could grab the boy and corrupt him then and there.
No, not yet. He must let the others know, after all sharing is caring.
Minho almost cares too much…
He quickly rubs one out under the safety of his desk and secretive posture before lifting up the elastic of his brief to take a picture of the mess he created just envisioning little ol’ innocent Jeongin beneath him. Minho selected a private group chat and sent the image, replies came almost instantly;

It was now far into the afternoon, the sun cascading a warm glow over the campus. Jeongin walked out of his final lecture of the day, a quite successful day he would say considering how jittery he was in the morning. He often kept smiling as his mind went over the conversation he had with Professor Lee earlier — yes he had many people believing in him, yet this was different. Professor Lee was, well, a professional! And the fact he personally believed in Jeongin’s efforts had to symbolise something…
He giggled to himself as he made his way around the performance block towards the campus dormitory. Jeongin suddenly stopped as he bumped into something solid, completely oblivious to his surroundings until now.
With a small “oof” he stepped back to apologise to whoever he had bumped into, but the stranger opened their mouth first; “Hey watc– wait, oh my god? Are you a freshman?”
The stranger’s face suddenly lit up as Jeongin nodded, “Aww, wait you’re actually super cute! Do you have any friends yet?”
Jeongin found it a bit odd that his, who seemed to be, upperclassmen was doting on him — especially since he didn’t know them either. Yet, he appreciated the compliment.
“No, not really. I mean it’s my first day so I’ve been more focussed on learning the place and getting to my lectures on time…”
The stranger suddenly wrapped an arm around Jeongin’s shoulder, pulling him into a side hug; “Oh-em-gee! Aren’t you sweet? Well, my name’s Felix and I’m declaring myself as your new bestfriend!” Jeongin blushed at how closely Felix was holding him.
“Um, sure…” The younger agreed, smiling bashfully.
Felix unwrapped his arm and instead reached for his phone from the back pocket of his dark-washed jeans. He opened up a familiar looking messaging app, “Here gimme your Kakao ID, I’ll message you tomorrow so we can have lunch together!”
Jeongin hesitated for a moment, still momentarily in shock at the fact that he had made a friend so quickly, “Um yeah! It’s Foxiny0802.”
The blonde hummed in acknowledgement as he added Jeongin’s contact, “Cute user, Foxyiny, that makes sense because of your foxy eyes.” Felix winked at Jeongin playfully to which his cheeks turned impossibly redder.
“Oh my god, I’m such a bad friend! I didn’t even get your name yet, and I doubt you’re called foxiny…” Felix quickly slipped his phone back into his pocket, whilst complaining dramatically.
“No– it’s um okay! I’m Jeongin, Yang Jeongin.” He introduced himself with a shy smile – braces exposed, avoiding eye contact.
“Hmm, you’re so adorable. Well, I best get going, my hyung won’t like it if I’m late home again.. See you around Innie!” Felix patted him on the shoulder with a warm smile before heading off in the direction Jeongin just came from.
—
Jeongin now finds himself in the comfort of his extremely under-decorated and simple dorm room, somehow he managed not to receive a roommate. Which isn’t a good or a bad thing… He sat on the edge of his bed, recounting everything that had happened during the day. First Professor Lee complimenting him – to which Jeongin blushes as he remembers – to suddenly becoming friends with an upper classman, Felix.
How did he manage it? He had no idea, maybe his Grandma wasn’t sugar-coating all her compliments about how talented he was. Jeongin fell backwards to lie flat on the mattress, staring up at the ceiling with the goofiest smile ever.
This was probably the best first day ever, it could only go down hill from here.
