Work Text:
Rui glanced in the mirror on the way to the changing room. His hoodie hid his chest well.
He wouldn't be in the hoodie much longer.
Rui sighed as he entered the changing room, opening his bag and grabbing the dress. Stupid, stupid dance performance.
Stupid dress.
Stupid outfit.
He came out a few minutes later. The dance room had a giant mirror, so it was hard to not look. It covered an entire wall.
The dress was too tight. Showed off his figure too much.
He shouldn't care. It'd not like he'd pass anyways. He's wearing a dress.
But it still made him feel like his skin wasn't his.
"Rui!" Tsukasa exited from the boys changing room, his dance outfit completely different. A white button up top, black pants, and a red tie. "Are you ready for the-oh."
He immediately could tell Rui was feeling uncomfortable. "Are you gonna be okay?"
"I'll be fine." Rui forced a smile. "It's only for an hour. Hopefully. Then I can change."
"Are you sure?"
"I'm sure."
Rui sat down, and Tsukasa went down next to him, resting his head on his boyfriend's shoulder. Rui grabbed his hand. "My star is gonna look so good on stage, aren't you?"
"I'll be the best dancer on that stage! Except for you, of course."
"No, you will."
"You will!"
The playful back and forth continued for a while, until the dance teacher walked out, a clipboard in hand. "Minako! Head to your class period's assigned area!"
Rui slowly stood up. Minako. A name that wasn't his. Not truly. "Yes, sorry." He walked over to the area, and sat back down, occasionally stealing a glance at Tsukasa.
A few minutes later, and the groups were lead to the back of the cafeteria, the room where the stage was.
Tsukasa's class period was right next to Rui, so they sat next to each other. "Did your parents show up?" Tsukasa asked.
Rui nodded. "Yeah. You remember what to do?"
"Of course I remember! You wound me, dear Rui, thinking I would forget!" Tsukasa chuckled.
Rui held Tsukasa's hand in his own. "Good. Remember what to call me. Minako. Not Rui."
Tsukasa wrapped his free arm around Rui's shoulders. "Rui's a much better name."
"I agree."
They stayed seated like that. Tsukasa's group was lead backstage.
Rui watched as Tsukasa's group started to dance. His eyes didn't leave his boyfriend once. He was amazing.
As the dance ended, one of the teacher's assistants moved Rui's group to backstage. There was one other group before them.
Rui managed to catch Tsukasa on his way out. "You did amazing!"
"Why, thank you, Rui! Break a leg out there!"
Eventually, Rui's group took their positions. The lights flared back on.
And they danced.
Rui was near the front. Every step hit perfectly. He could see his parents watching from the crowd.
He hit the final pose, the lights blacking out. A drop of sweat dripped from his forehead. He did it.
The final dance of the year.
The group went back to their seats. Tsukasa immediately pulled Rui into a hug. "THAT'S MY BOYFRIEND! YOU WERE THE BEST PERSON OUT THERE! I LOVE YOU, RUI!"
Rui gave Tsukasa a kiss on the top of his head. "I love you more."
More time passed. Their final applause.
Rui and Tsukasa were now free to go home.
Rui's parents walked up to him, handing a bouquet of flowers. "You did great, Minako! You looked so beautiful!" His mom looked at Tsukasa. "Is this that friend you've been telling me about?"
Rui held the flowers to his chest. Trying to hide it. "Yes! This is Tsukasa, the one I share my theater class with!"
Tsukasa shook Rui's dad's hand. "Very nice to meet you! I'm Tsukasa Tenma, future star!"
Rui's dad's handshake was firm. "Nice to meet you, Tenma."
Tsukasa's family walked up at that time. Saki went up to Tsukasa, and waved at Rui. "Hi, R-"
Tsukasa quickly clamped a hand over Saki's mouth. "Saki! Dear sister!" His voice lowered to a whisper only she could hear. "Minako. Call him Minako. Just for tonight."
Saki flashed her brother a quick thumbs up as he lifted his hand. "Hi, Minako!"
"Well, we'll be going home now," Rui's mom grabbed Rui's hand.
When Rui arrived home, he immediately went to the bathroom and changed back into his hoodie and pants. He wiped the make-up from his face. Then he looked in the mirror.
"...Tsukasa says I look like a guy," He thought, "So why can't I believe it myself?"
All he could see staring back at him was a girl.
Rui looked away. He went out of the bathroom, and into the bedroom. He laid down on his bed, going to text Tsukasa.
[My star. You home yet?]
[I am (⌒‐⌒) you doing good]
[Not feeling good rn]
[Are you not feeling like a guy?]
[Yeah...]
[Well guess what?! You're the most manly man ever! And I love you! >:D ]
[Thanks, Tsukasa. Love you]
[I love you too! Btw, check your school bag. I have a present for yoooooou ;3 ]
Rui opened his bag. Inside it, was a binder.
Rui put it on. His chest was noticably smaller.
A small smile appeared on Rui's face. "Oh, Tsukasa...you're the best boyfriend ever."
He saw the true Rui.
He supported him.
And that meant the world to him.
