“Which is it,” Crawford asks, even though he isn’t sure asking Merritt follow-up questions is the smartest thing he’s ever done. “Is he cute or funny-looking?”
The camera unfuzzes, and Merritt rolls her eyes again. The crosses she bears, really. Crawford’s heart goes out to her. “Not funny-looking. He looks funny. Like he’d be a funny guy. Like, he’s smiling in his rookie picture. It’s all cute and lopsided, he’s only got the one dimple, did you notice?”
Crawford didn’t.“In yours, you’re like—all doom and gloom, like you’ve never even heard a joke before in your life. Mom’s got it on the fridge, it’s hilarious, it looks like a mugshot— like, I didn’t know you could smile for your headshot. But he’s got a little smile going on, it’s cute.”
