Chapter Text
The biting chill of winter kissed Jaehyun's cheeks as he stepped out of his warm, cozy house, a duffle bag slung over his shoulder. The early morning light reflected off the frost-covered lawn, casting a silver glow across the quiet street.
He took a deep breath, inhaling the crisp air that smelled faintly of pine. It was his first day at the prestigious Elite Cheonghwa Boarding School, and his heart raced with excitement. His fiance, Jungwoo had packed him a thermos of hot coffee, the aroma of caramel wafting through the air, and his favorite sandwich wrapped in wax paper. He'd been waiting for this moment for weeks.
He got the news of his appointment as a high school teacher at Cheonghwa Boarding School two weeks ago. The school was a bastion of academic excellence nestled in the heart of the countryside, surrounded by a dense forest that stood tall, its branches frost-kissed and whispering secrets to the cold winds.
The offer came with a generous salary, and Jaehyun had accepted it with a mix of excitement and trepidation. The money would be a significant boost to his wedding funds, but it meant leaving Jungwoo behind in the city for the better part of the school year.
"I will miss you," Jungwoo murmured, his breath misting in the cold air as he clutched Jaehyun's hand. "But we've talked about this, and it's a great opportunity for us." His voice was a gentle reminder of the financial burden that had been lifted from their shoulders with Jaehyun's new job.
Jaehyun nodded, his smile a little forced. "I know. It's just hard to imagine spending months apart." He took a sip of his coffee, the warmth spreading through his chest "I got used to you being around all the time."
Jungwoo leaned in, his eyes earnest. "This is our future we're investing in. The wedding, our honeymoon, our life together. It'll be worth it, I promise..and I will always be just a phone call away."
The comfort in Jungwoo's words didn't completely alleviate Jaehyun's anxiety, but he knew his fiance was right. They had been planning their wedding meticulously, dreaming of the perfect honeymoon in Maldives, Paris or Bali.
The salary from Cheonghwa would ensure they could afford the trip without any financial stress. Plus, the experience of teaching in an elite school would only bolster Jaehyun's resume, opening more doors for both of them in the future.
With a heavy sigh, Jaehyun hugged Jungwoo tightly. "I'll call you every day," he whispered into Jungwoo's ear, feeling the warmth of his breath on his skin. Jungwoo's arms wrapped around him firmly, the warmth of his embrace seeping into his very soul. "I'll miss you too, so much," he murmured back, a hint of sadness in his voice.
They stood there for a moment, soaking in the comfort of their presence, until the shrill sound of the school bus honking impatiently brought them back to reality. "You better get going," Jungwoo said, gently pushing Jaehyun towards his Hyundai Car. "You don't want to be late on your first day."
Jaehyun nodded, climbing into the car, the leather seats cold under his fingertips. Jungwoo leaned in to give him a lingering kiss, his hand lingering on the door handle before finally letting go. "Drive safe," he called out, his breath forming little puffs of smoke in the air.
The journey to Cheonghwa Boarding School was long and scenic. The winding roads were lined with ancient oaks and maples, their branches bowed with the weight of winter's icy embrace.
Jaehyun couldn't help but feel a sense of awe at the grandeur of the place. He had always envied the rich kids who got to attend schools like these, surrounded by nature and opportunity. Now, he would be a part of that world, shaping the minds of the next generation.
Jaehyun had always been a city dweller, but the prospect of living and working in such a serene environment was a refreshing change. He had packed his bags with care, filling them with warm clothes suitable for the harsh winter months ahead. He had even bought a new leather-bound planner, the kind that screamed "professional" with its sleek black cover and gold embossed initials.
The drive to the school was tranquil, with the only sound being the crunch of tires on the icy road. Jaehyun took in the scenery, admiring the snow-capped trees and the occasional deer that darted across his path.
The school was a majestic sight to behold, with its ivy-covered brick walls and towering spires that pierced the winter sky. As he pulled up to the grand entrance, a sense of pride and belonging swelled within him as he parked his car and got out of it, grabbing his bag from the passenger seat.
A wave of students, dressed in uniforms, rushed by him, their laughter and chatter filling the air. The grandeur of the school was a stark contrast to his previous workplace, and Jaehyun couldn't help but feel a touch of apprehension. He had been warned about the students here, privileged, often spoiled, and occasionally difficult to manage.
"You must be Mr. Jung, Welcome to Cheonghwa!" A cheerful voice interrupted his thoughts. He turned to see a young woman, probably in her early thirties, jogging towards him. She wore a crisp skirt suit that complemented her slim figure, her hair tied back in a sleek bun. Her name tag read 'Miss kang, Head of Staff'.
"Good morning," Jaehyun replied, shaking her outstretched hand firmly. "Thank you for the warm welcome"
Miss Kang beamed at him, her teeth a dazzling white in the morning light. "We're all so excited to have you on board. Let me show you to the principal office. You're going to love it here," she said, leading him through the grand archway.
The hallowed halls of Cheonghwa were lined with portraits of stern-looking alumni and gleaming trophy cases. The scent of polished oak and leather-bound books filled the air. As they walked, the cacophony of students grew louder. They were a sea of blue blazers and white shirts, their laughter echoing through the corridors like the tinkling of silver spoons against fine china.
"So, Mr. Jung," Miss Kang began, her eyes darting to the students as they passed, "You're aware that our students are exclusively from affluent families. They're used to getting what they want. But fear not, they're also incredibly bright and eager to learn."
Jaehyun nodded, his stomach fluttering with nerves. "I've taught in diverse environments before. I'm sure I can handle it," he replied, trying to sound more confident than he felt.
Miss Kang gave him a knowing smile. "Good. That's the spirit we need around here." As they approached the principal's office, the chatter grew quieter. The students glanced at them with curiosity. Jaehyun straightened his tie, feeling the weight of his new position.
The principal's office was a bastion of order and tradition, with dark wooden furniture and a large mahogany desk that looked like it had seen centuries of scholarly debates.
Principal Lee was a stern, no-nonsense alpha in his late fifties, with a penchant for discipline. His eyes scrutinized Jaehyun as he entered, and Jaehyun felt his handshake was more of a test of strength than a greeting.
"Welcome, Mr. Jung," Principal Lee said, his voice deep and commanding. "I've reviewed your credentials, and I must say, you have quite the reputation preceding you."
Jaehyun swallowed nervously, his eyes darting around the room. "Thank you, Principal Lee. I'll do my best to uphold the school's standards," he replied, his voice steady despite the butterflies in his stomach.
Miss Kang gestured to a chair in front of the principal's desk. "Please, have a seat," she said, as a young staff member rushed in, took Jaehyun's duffle bag, and disappeared just as quickly.
Jaehyun sat down, his eyes scanning the room filled with academic awards and certificates. The silence grew thick as Principal Lee studied him from across the desk, his gaze unwavering. "Your resume is quite impressive, Mr. Jung," he began, his voice resonating in the hushed room. "I knew we had to snatch you before any other school could. You're going to be a great asset to our community."
Miss Kang leaves the room, leaving Jaehyun alone with Principal Lee. He can't help but feel a tad nervous, as the man's presence is intimidating.
"Now, Mr. Jung," Principal Lee began, his stern gaze never leaving Jaehyun's face, "I trust you are aware of the... unique challenges that come with teaching at Cheonghwa. Our students are not like those you've taught before. They are the crème de la crème of society, the future leaders of our nation. We expect nothing but the best from them, and in turn, we expect our teachers to be exemplary role models."
Jaehyun nodded, his throat dry. "Yes, Principal Lee. I'm ready to take on the responsibility."
"Good, I believe you will fit in well here," Principal Lee said, his expression slightly softening "now, let's talk about our system, Teachers live in the staff dorms, which are separate from the students' residences, but you'll be interacting with them frequently outside of class. We have a strict policy against fraternizing with the students, there are strict limits to physical contact and emotional involvement. Do you understand?"
"I totally understand, Principal Lee," Jaehyun said, his voice firm. "I'm here to teach, guide, and support them in their academic pursuits."
The principal leaned back in his chair, his eyes still fixed on Jaehyun. "Very well," he said, his expression still stern. "We also expect our teachers to maintain a professional demeanor at all times. This includes the way you dress, the way you speak, and the way you conduct yourself around the students."
Jaehyun nodded, his eyes focused on the man before him. He had chosen to wear a tailored suit for his first day, hoping to make a good impression. "Of course"
Principal Lee leaned forward, his elbows on the desk, his hands steepled in front of his chin. "Our students are young, but they are also astute. They can sense weakness or indecision. You must be firm but fair,"
"That's all for now," Principal Lee concluded, sliding a thick document across the desk. "Your contract. I trust you've had the chance to review it?"
Jaehyun nodded, his heart thudding in his chest. The contract was extensive, detailing his duties and responsibilities, the school's policies, and the expectations placed upon him as a teacher. He had studied it meticulously the night before, committing the most important points to memory.
With a deep breath, he took the fountain pen Principal Lee offered and signed his name with a flourish, feeling the weight of his decision press down upon him like a heavy blanket. The ink glided smoothly over the paper, a symbol of his newfound commitment to this elite institution.
As he handed the contract back, Jaehyun couldn't help but feel a sense of finality. He was no longer just a teacher; he was now a guardian of the future, a molder of young minds in the hallowed halls of Cheonghwa. The gravity of his role was palpable, but it was a challenge he was eager to embrace.
"Thank you, Principal Lee," Jaehyun said, rising from his seat with the same firmness as he had signed his name. "I won't disappoint you."
The principal nodded, his gaze lingering for a moment before he turned to the intercom. "Miss Kang, could you please come in and show Mr. Jung to his quarters?"
Miss Kang reappeared, her smile as bright as ever. "Follow me," she said, leading him out of the office and down the grand stairs. The students had dispersed, leaving the halls eerily quiet.
Jaehyun's room in the staff dormitory was surprisingly spacious and well-appointed. It had high ceilings and large windows that allowed the natural light to flood in, casting a warm glow over the polished hardwood floors. The walls were painted a calming shade of blue, and a cozy armchair sat in the corner by a small bookshelf, begging to be sat in with a good book and a cup of tea.
Miss Kang showed him around, pointing out the en suite bathroom, the small but functional kitchenette, and the queen-sized bed that looked incredibly inviting after his long drive. She handed him a set of keys with a flourish, her smile never wavering. "Make yourself at home, Mr. Jung, here your keys" she pulled another set out of her pocket "and these are for your office, it's on the second floor, right next to the library."
Jaehyun took the keys, feeling the cold metal bite into his palm. "Thank you, Miss Kang."
"No problem at all," she replied, her heels clicking against the floor as she walked away. "Remember, lunch is at 12 pm sharp, you can get to know the other teachers".
Once she left, he dropped his bag on the floor and took a moment to appreciate the space. It was so much more than he had ever dreamed of for a teacher's quarters. The bed looked heavenly, the bathroom spotless, and the view from the windows was breathtaking. The room was a sanctuary, a place to retreat to after a long day of shaping young minds.
He unpacked his things meticulously, placing his books on the shelves and hanging his clothes in the closet. Each item had a place, a sign of the order he intended to bring to his new life at Cheonghwa.
As the clock struck twelve, Jaehyun made his way to the staff dining hall. The air was filled with the scent of gourmet food, a stark contrast to the cafeteria meals he was used to from his previous school. The other teachers were already seated, their conversations a hum of excitement and camaraderie.
He spotted Miss Kang at a table in the corner, surrounded by a group of laughing colleagues. She waved him over, introducing him to the staff, mostly teachers in their forties with a few in their fifties.
Their eyes sized him up, curiosity and a hint of skepticism in their gazes. He was the youngest by at least a decade, and it was clear that he didn't quite fit the mold of the seasoned educators that populated Cheonghwa.
Jaehyun felt a pang of self-consciousness as he took his seat. The teachers talked shop, sharing anecdotes of past students and discussing the school's legacy. He listened intently, trying to learn as much as he could about the school culture. The banter was laden with inside jokes and references that flew over his head, leaving him feeling like an outsider.
Johnny, a teacher in his early thirties, leaned over and offered Jaehyun a friendly smile. "Don't worry, we were all new at once," he said, his voice a comforting rumble. "You'll get the hang of it." He was an alpha, with kind eyes, and a warmth that seemed to radiate from his very core.
Jaehyun nodded, his stomach rumbling as he took in the lavish spread before him. The dining hall was a testament to the school's wealth, with gleaming silverware and fine china that looked like it had been plucked straight from a museum exhibit.
Johnny, the young alpha who had offered him a kind smile, turned out to be an English teacher who had been at Cheonghwa for five years, he used to live in America. Jaehyun felt a sense of relief at finding someone closer to his age to connect with.
"So, Jaehyun," Johnny began, as they tucked into their meals, "I heard you're engaged. Any wedding plans?"
Jaehyun felt his cheeks warm at the mention of Jungwoo. "Yes," he said, smiling. "We're planning for next summer, hopefully. We're still deciding between Maldives or Paris."
Johnny's eyes lit up. "Ah, the romance of Europe versus the tropical paradise. Tough call." He took a bite of his steak, chewing thoughtfully. "But you'll make it work. Love always finds a way."
Jaehyun nodded, his thoughts drifting to Jungwoo. "We're keeping our options open," he said. "We want it to be perfect."
The bell for the end of lunch rang out, echoing through the grand hall, and the teachers began to disperse to their afternoon duties, their plates cleared by the diligent staff who hovered in the background. As Jaehyun walked out with Johnny, the bustle of students grew louder.
A flash of movement caught his eye,a young omega, his laughter bubbling through the air like a mountain spring. His cheeks were flushed with the cold, and his eyes sparkled with mischief. He barreled into Jaehyun, not looking where he was going, and their shoulders collided with a gentle thud.
The omega looked up, a gasp of surprise parting his lips, and Jaehyun's heart skipped a beat. He was stunning, his features delicate, with a slim nose and a smattering of freckles across his cheeks. His uniform was slightly rumpled, the tie askew, and his hair a mess of soft waves. He looked like an angel
Their eyes met, and for a brief moment, the world around them seemed to slow down. The omega's smile was infectious, his teeth a dazzling white against the pink of his lips. He had the kind of smile that could light up a room, and for a second, it lit up Jaehyun's heart.
"Doyoung, watch where you're going!" A stern voice cut through the air, and the omega's eyes darted away from Jaehyun's, a look of mild irritation crossing his features before he broke into a sprint. A middle-aged female omega teacher followed closely, her expression annoyed but resigned.
"You okay, Mr. Jung?" The voice was soft, with a hint of curiosity. Jaehyun turned to see jiyoung, the art teacher, with short black hair that framed her oval face and a warm smile that softened her sharp features.
"yes, I'm fine," Jaehyun said, brushing off the encounter with the young omega, "that's Doyoung, he's an Annoying little troublemaker," jiyoung said with a chuckle, her eyes twinkling as she watched Doyoung disappear around the corner.
"Oh, I see," Jaehyun replied to Jiyoung's comment about Doyoung, his heart racing from the brief encounter. He couldn't help but wonder what kind of trouble the young omega could get into that would earn him such a reputation.
Jiyoung's expression grew more serious. "Doyoung is a... unique case here at Cheonghwa," she said, her voice dropping to a murmur. "His family is quite influential, so the school turns a blind eye to most of his antics. But he's a handful, even for us teachers...anyways, I'm jiyoung, the art teacher here," she extended her hand.
Jaehyun took her hand, feeling the warmth and comfort in her grip. "Nice to meet you, I'm Jaehyun Jung, the new biology teacher," he introduced himself.
Jiyoung's smile grew wider. "Ah, Biology, wonderful," she said, her eyes lighting up. "Cheonghwa could always use more smart people. You'll be a great addition to our team."
Her words warmed, He felt a strange kinship with her, as if she understood his apprehension about fitting in. "Thank you, I'll do my best," he replied, his voice sincere.
"your first class is tomorrow, right?" Jaehyun nodded, swallowing hard. "Yes, I'll be teaching to the third years"
Jiyoung gave him an encouraging pat on the back before she had to rush to her class, leaving him alone in the hallway with the echo of her heels fading away. Jaehyun took out the map Miss Kang had given him earlier, the paper crinkling in his hand. The school was a sprawling maze of corridors and staircases, a labyrinth of knowledge and tradition.
He studied the map intently, his eyes scanning the neatly printed words and lines that represented his new workplace. The second floor, where his office was located, was a blend of academic departments and administrative offices. He folded the map neatly and tucked it into his pocket, before taking out the key to his office.
The trek to his office felt like a journey through time. The walls were lined with framed black and white photographs of stern-looking teachers and well-dressed students from decades past.
Finally, Jaehyun reached the second floor and located his office. The door was a heavy oak monolith with a brass plate that gleamed with his name engraved on it. He took a deep breath, turned the key, and pushed it open.
His office was indeed calming, just as Miss Kang had described. The walls were painted a warm beige, and the scent of old books and leather filled the air. A large mahogany desk with a leather chair behind it was flanked by tall bookshelves that held a mix of classic literature and educational texts. A grand piano stood proudly against the far wall, gleaming under the soft glow of pendant lights.
Jaehyun couldn't help but let out a low whistle. He had never had an office this grand before, he shared an office with teachers in his previous school. This was his own personal space, a place where he could let his creativity flow. He sat down in the chair, feeling the leather hug his form, and took in the sight of his new domain.
The thought of losing this job was unbearable. This was his chance to provide Jungwoo with the wedding they deserved, to prove to everyone that he could succeed in this prestigious environment.
He rolled up his sleeves and got to work, setting up his desk with the few personal items he had brought,a framed photo of him and Jungwoo.
He would do all he could to keep this job.
Or that's what he thought..
