Work Text:

Barbara sat, twiddling her thumbs as the minutes turned to hours and the hours turned to forever. He would be here soon. Soon she would be in his arms, his lips on hers, his scent capturing her senses. Soon, they could speak face to face without the barrier of a screen. Soon, she could tell him she loves him as he counts the freckles on her cheeks.

 “You seem anxious.”

Barbara jumped out of her skin and turned to find an elderly man looking at her with a bemused grin on his lined face.

She huffed out a laugh, “A little.”

 “Good or bad?”  he asked.

 “Great,” she breathed out.

 “Oh yeah?”

“My boyfriend is coming to town. We haven’t seen each other in two months.” Barbara explained.

 “Ah, young love.”

Barbara rolled her lips into her mouth, ‘young love’ isn’t quite how she would describe her relationship with Dick. What they had transcended time and space. The sun rose and set on him. He was her everything and Barbara knew she was the same to him.

“He’s it for me.” Barbara found herself saying aloud.

The elderly man laughed and nodded his head, “When you know you know. I have that same look on my face when I talk about my wife.”

“Flights to Bludhaven landing now. Please make your way to gate 11.”

Barbara felt her breath catch in her throat.

“Well,” the man said, “I’ll be off. You have a good day…”

 “Barbara.”

 He smiled, “Barbara.”

And with that, her companion left her to herself.

It only took a beat of silence for Barbara to begin pushing herself through the crowd. She usually hated when people pitied her when they noticed her in her wheelchair. But for this, she was okay with them quickly moving out of her way. And she sure as hell didn’t notice their looks of sorrow aimed at her. She couldn’t care about any of that right now.

As she came upon the gate, she stopped, her heart hammering away in her chest. She watched as one by one everyone came out. Then, there he was. Her boy wonder. Dick stopped when he caught sight of her and for a moment, they locked eyes and let the world fall away. A gorgeous smile came across his face and he darted over to her. He knelt down and she practically launched herself from her seat to wrap her arms around his neck.

Dick buried his face into the crook of her neck. “God, I’ve missed you.”

Barbara felt her eyes sting, “I’ve missed you more.”

 “Impossible.”
