Work Text:
Edwin was supposed to pick Niko up from the library - his friend attended a plethora of extracurricular activities, from meetings of manga discussion club, through meetings of the asexual support group, to various arts and crafts workshops. Truth be told, he wasn't sure what his friend was doing today - maybe it was the jewellery making workshop…?
When he got there, Niko was already outside, chatting with someone.
Oh. Edwin's breath hitched when his gaze focused on that very handsome someone.
The person was wearing black: a skintight longsleeve with a pleated skirt and heavy combat boots. There was a purple bandana on top of their head, but it didn't completely hide the dark locks that framed their face. With the way they were standing - with their side to Edwin - Payne could notice the pierced ear with many small earrings along the curve and one black pearl, hanging from the earlobe.
When they turned briefly, Edwin noticed that they had purple eyeshadow with black eyeliner around their pale-amber, almost golden eyes - and Edwin's heart stopped when they smiled rakishly right at him.
Seeing the stranger's attention focused somewhere else, Niko looked in that direction as well - and she spotted her friend. "Edwin, hi!"
Her white and dove grey jacket and pantsuit combination, along with her white hair and her beaming smile, made her the brightest spot under the dark, gloomy sky - and Payne didn't try to stop the small grin that found its way on his lips at the sight.
He approached the talking pair, stealing curious glances at the stranger who didn't pretend to be coy, and slid their gaze up and down Edwin's body.
Edwin could feel his cheeks burn red.
"Edwin, this is my new friend, Thomas! Thomas - Edwin, Edwin - Thomas!"
Niko's enthusiastic introduction made Edwin breathe a little easier when he looked at his friend's new friend.
He offered the person his hand. "Um. Hello. I’m Edwin Payne." He glanced quickly at Thomas. The make up surrounding the golden eyes looked even more impressive up close, and there was a shine of something that was either lipgloss or maybe just a chapstick on Thomas' lips. "He/him," he added as a second thought, and it made Thomas grin.
"Charmed, I'm sure," the low drawl resembled a purr. "Thomas King, he/him but anything goes." He shook Edwin's hand, and as he drew away, his thumb brushed against the top of Edwin's wrist, prolonging the touch for maybe less than a second - but it was enough to make Payne's cheeks heat up.
"Niko, why are all your friends so hot, it's unfair," Thomas asked, but his tone made it hard to tell if he was joking.
"But you're my friend, too," the young woman said brightly. "So it applies to you as well!"
"Awww, you're a sweetheart," the man cooed in a way that sounded slightly condescending, and Edwin was ready to jump to his friend's defence -
But Niko laughed, pleased with the compliment, and replied with a slightly teasing tone. "What, like it's hard?"
The fond expression on Thomas' face told Edwin that it was the dynamic established between him and Niko, and he found it rather fascinating - he was used to Niko's humour being subtler somehow, but it was nice to see she was enjoying herself.
Niko and Thomas exchanged a few more words about someone Edwin didn't know, and it gave Payne the opportunity to watch Thomas discreetly. Or at least he wanted to watch discreetly, but evidently, he'd done a rather shabby job of it, judging by the way the golden eyes met his as Edwin scrutinised King's face, and he was appreciating the intricacies of his make up.
Edwin's cheeks heated up even more and he was worried he resembled a beetroot now; the unflattering blush stayed on his face when Edwin turned to ask Niko a question. He could feel Thomas' curious eyes on him. Being observed like that roused some feelings, but instead of the usual sick sensation of anxiety, this time it was something more akin to excitement.
"Alright, so we definitely need to visit the supermarket on the way home," Niko addressed Edwin a moment later, when the time arrived to part their ways. Then she peered at Thomas. "See you next week?"
"Wouldn't miss it for the world," the man drawled, and blew Niko a kiss. The girl giggled, and Thomas moved his eyes to Edwin. "Hope to see you around too, handsome," he said with a wink.
"Maybe so," Payne replied noncommittally, but it was enough to turn Thomas' foxy smile into a toothy grin that looked unfairly handsome on him.
"Countin' on it!" He saluted them and turned to leave.
Payne was watching the man walk away - and he almost startled when after making a few strides, Thomas shot a look back over his shoulder.
When his gaze met Edwin's, and King realised that the man was watching him, he smiled brilliantly.
Edwin let out a small exhale. Oh, he was in trouble.
"Hi, Edwin?" Niko popped her head into his bedroom. "I have a question."
"Yes?"
"Do you think Charles and Crystal would mind if I invited Thomas to join us tonight?"
Edwin, Niko, Charles and Crystal were supposed to meet for drinks - ever since they swapped their living arrangements and Niko moved in with Edwin while Charles went to live with Crystal, there weren't as many opportunities to see each other as usual.
"You should probably text them," Edwin replied.
"Yeah, for sure. And would you mind?" Niko tilted her head. "If I invited him?"
"Oh. No, not at all," Edwin cursed the way his face warmed up at the memory of the handsome man.
Niko grinned, as if she knew the exact reason for Edwin's reaction - well she probably did know - and to stop her from asking any prying questions, he asked, "Tell me, Niko - how did you get to know him, anyway?"
"We met in the library! I was making the leaflets about meetings of our ace group, and he offered to take a few to his workplace."
"Oh. That's… Kind of him," Payne decided, and he was supposed to ask for more details- but Niko's phone rang.
She threw him an apologetic look and left his room.
"I was briefly considering uni - sexology, specifically," Thomas said as he looked at Edwin.
They met for drinks with the rest of Edwin's friends, and the conversation was currently revolving around Thomas, as they all wanted to get to know the newcomer Niko brought to their friendly meet up.
"I thought it would be fun," the man picked up. "Seeing what makes people tick and why-"
"Right?" Niko was excited. "Like, what's the big deal with sex, why is it so important-"
"Exactly!" Thomas smiled at her gratefully. "You get me."
"I doubt she does, mate," Charles mumbled with a sigh, and Edwin narrowed his eyes at his best friend.
He knew Charles loved Niko almost as much as Edwin did, but sometimes he thought that Charles' infantilising tendency to treat Niko like a silly younger sister was annoying. Yes, she was asexual, but it didn't mean she was oblivious. Niko was a bright young woman, and she talked to Edwin many times about how certain things about being allosexual seem bizarre to her - the same way Edwin sometimes struggled to grasp how she was seeing things as an ace. But he didn't always have to understand (although he usually tried) - he just had to support her, and that was what he did.
Then again… Edwin's eyes slid to Thomas. Maybe experiences of someone like this could be different enough from Niko's that their colliding perspectives would make for a lively discussion.
"Anyhow, in the end I decided to screw that, the library is free so I can get my reading there and I need no judgemental asshole to try to preach to me about 'fixing broken people'."
"Oh, really now.” Payne almost tutted. “I know that bigots are alive and well, but I'm sure no one shares their private homophobic views during lectures-"
"Maybe not homophobic, but-" Thomas started, but Crystal interrupted him with a loud snort.
"Edwin, where the fuck have you been? Everybody has their own agenda, and all those professors are more than happy to try to convert you to their political views," she scoffed.
"That just makes me feel better about giving up on uni," Thomas shrugged with a smile. "I'm way better at what I do anyway."
"And what do you do for a living?"
"I work in a sex shop."
"Of course you do," Charles muttered with an eyeroll, but his comment was quiet enough that no one but Edwin heard it. Out loud he just said, "That sounds like a very stimulating workplace, mate."
"Good one!" The man grinned, flashing his teeth, and toasted to Charles with his drink. "But yeah, you're right. I’ve had many interesting conversations with my clients. I love to learn new things, and it gives me the best opportunity."
Edwin was rather charmed by this way of looking at things (or maybe he was just charmed by Thomas), and he was worried that he was staring at the man - but he didn't want to tear his eyes away. Not when the bar's colourful neon lights painted Thomas' face with this incredibly flattering contrast of shadows and bright lights that made him look so beautiful-
"Hear that, Edwin? You should change your career path while there's still time." Crystal teased before taking a sip of her beer. "Maybe you could learn something new from Thomas."
From that moment, Edwin and Crystal fell in their usual back-and-forth, with Niko and Charles as their usual spectators - and the new addition in the form of Thomas. Eventually, however, it seemed that he got bored of the bickering, and he excused himself to go for a smoke.
Edwin couldn't help but follow the man with his eyes, and he could feel something squirming weirdly in his chest at the sight of Thomas chatting - flirting? - with a guy at the bar, near the exit to the veranda.
"Okay, now he's out," Crystal began, her voice conspiratorial. "Spill. What are we thinking about that Thomas guy? And where the fuck did he come from, anyway?"
"He's my friend, I told you," Niko reminded the woman gently. "And he's really sweet! He volunteers at the cat shelter-"
"He's quite a piece of work, isn't he?" Charles tilted his head. "Got some reputation."
"What kind of reputation?" Edwin asked because he wanted to learn more about Thomas, but also because he was a nosy bitch.
"He's a player," Crystal's voice was non-judgemental, a little bored, even. "He keeps flirting with everybody. I think David said once that King is sex-obsessed freak, doesn't talk about anything else-"
"That's not true!" Niko protested heartily. "And anyway, do you really believe the words of your ex-boyfriend?"
"She's got a point, Crystal," Charles noticed.
"Okay, okay, I just wanted to tell you what I've heard-"
"Gossip and rumours are hardly the best way to get to know someone."
"But they are a way. And anyway, I was just surprised to see him here."
"Yeah, to be honest, he doesn't seem like the kind of person you'd be friends with," Charles looked at Niko.
Niko pursed her lips. "I feel like you're being very judgemental. And I don't think it's nice."
"We're just-" Charles started, but Crystal interrupted him.
"We’re just exchanging opinions. And what I think is really damn interesting is that Edwin is yet to share his," the woman said with a sly grin, and Edwin felt put in the spotlight. "I'm wondering if that's because you suddenly decided to learn more about people before judging them? Or is it just the fact that you're too busy ogling him like a piece of meat?"
"Crystal, I'm not- I don't-!" Outrage and surprise made Edwin lost for words. He looked at Niko and Charles for help, but they very pointedly did not utter a word. Finally, he faced Crystal and her smirk again. "I just think he is attractive, there's nothing wrong with that."
"Sure there isn't," Crystal conceded. "I just wanted you to admit I'm right."
Payne shook his head, but said nothing, and Crystal already started a new conversation with Niko.
Edwin, meanwhile, raised his eyes to look at the room - just in time to see Thomas, who was smiling at the man he'd been talking to earlier. Now, he was idly petting the man's forearm.
Payne watched, spell-bound, not exactly wanting to witness this but also unable to look away.
King leant in slightly, and the smirk on his lips had that lovely teasing edge to it. The stranger he'd been talking to drew closer to him-
And Thomas pressed a quick kiss to his cheek, and then he pulled something from the man's hand: a single cigarette.
Thomas sauntered to the veranda door, raising the fag in acknowledgement, and he threw a wink over his arm for a good measure.
As King disappeared outside, Edwin had a fleeting thought that maybe he should buy a box of cigarettes to carry in his pocket. Just because.
"That was fun, guys, thanks for letting me tag along!" Thomas said cheerfully, walking down the road with Niko and Edwin.
"It's been lovely to have your company," Payne said, emboldened by some residual tipsiness from an hour ago.
"Awww flatterer, bet you say this to all the guys Niko brings along." There was just enough self-deprecation in his voice that it made Edwin give the man a searching look, but there wasn't much he could tell, not when they've known each other for so short.
When they got to their building, Niko threw her arms around Thomas' neck to hug him goodbye. He gave her a hearty squeeze, and when they let go of each other, Niko turned to go home-
But when she threw a look over her arm at Edwin, she realised that her friend didn't follow.
Payne gave the girl a quick, pointed glance he hoped that Thomas didn't notice.
Niko's eyes went wide, and a smile appeared on her lips. She looked like she very much wanted to stay and watch the scene, but in the end, she said one last goodbye and stepped on the stairs to the house.
She threw Edwin one more delighted look and showed him thumbs up before disappearing inside the building.
Thomas glanced quickly in the direction where Niko had disappeared, and then he faced Edwin again. "God, I love Niko. She's the best."
"She really is," Edwin nodded, looking down at his shoes. He'd been stalling on purpose, trying to assess the situation… And his assessment was that Thomas was still here.
So maybe it was worth it to shoot his shot.
Edwin cleared his throat, and when he looked at Thomas, he could see that the man was looking to the side... But he'd been stealing curious glances in Edwin's direction.
Payne took a deep breath.
"Well, it's been lovely talking to you today," Edwin said, looking down coyly. Then he raised his eyes to meet Thomas'. He was lucky to do it right at the moment when King was peering at him.
A tiny, startled gasp escaped King's lips when their eyes met. He regained his footing quickly though.
Thomas squared up his shoulders, and the corners of his lips went up a little - not quite a smile, but something that was rather confident and hopeful. "You know…" he said casually, hiding his hands in his pockets. Then he offered Edwin a small grin. "We could have some more lovely talks if you gave me your phone number. Or like, insta handle, or even twitter. Whatever's your poison."
"I must admit, I most enjoy seeing people face to face." Edwin's declaration was completely earnest. He did prefer to talk to people in real life: it made it easier to assess their reactions.
"Aww, wanna see me again already? Say less," Thomas laughed as he reached for his phone, and Payne couldn't help but smile at the lovely sound, and the delighted expression on the man's lips.
"Yes. Yes, I think I would rather like that." Payne slightly surprised himself with the straightforward statement, but to be fair, he didn't enjoy the convoluted language of modern dating. (Not that he was thinking about this in terms of dating, of course. It was just working on a chance to see Thomas again. No hidden agenda, naturally).
"Oh! Cool," Thomas said, but blush crept on his cheeks as he let his eyes down, almost abashed… Before he looked at Edwin again
They held each other's gaze for a few seconds, before Thomas waved his phone. "So…"
"Oh, yes, definitely."
They exchanged contact info, and Edwin experienced some bubbly giddiness that he found reflected in his companion.
Feeling optimistic and bold, Payne reached out to graze his fingertips against Thomas' hands, pretending it was an accidental, too-broad of a gesture, "Look, if you'd like to come up-"
"I've gotta head out, Edwin," Thomas stopped him right there.
Edwin deflated. "Right, yes, I apologise-"
Before he managed to spiral into overthinking his misstep, he was interrupted by a quick but warm press of lips against his cheek.
He could feel that he was burning red in the nippy night air, and when he looked at Thomas, the man was avoiding his gaze shyly - until he looked at him and their eyes met again.
The smile that graced Thomas' lips then was warm and earnest. "Have a good night, Edwin. Til the next time."
Edwin finally took a deeper breath, but despite trying to stay serious, a smile broke on his lips. "Goodnight. Mind how you go."
Acquaintanceship with Thomas was getting serious.
Niko invited him to the Game Night.
Not without asking her friends first, but still - Edwin was slightly perplexed to observe this development.
…He was pleased, as well.
He'd got the chance to see Thomas thrice over as many weeks - every time in Niko's company - and while Payne's attraction to the man was purely physical, what made Edwin really interested in chatting with King was the fact that he became good friends with Niko.
Edwin could admit, at least to himself, that it stung a bit, hearing how excited Niko was about this new friendship. But maybe it was just Edwin being more possessive than he should; the truth was, Niko was important to him, and he just couldn't figure out what it was about Thomas that made his friend so fond of the man.
Naturally, he wouldn't want to sound like he was jealous of this friendship. He'd been over this when Crystal started to hang out with him and Charles; he didn't want to deal with the whole ordeal again.
That was why he decided to reframe the situation in his mind.
Instead of feeling sulky that Niko had someone whom she talked about with such enthusiasm, Edwin decided to look at it in a different way:
Niko introduced him to an utterly gorgeous, alluring, intriguing man. Really, Edwin should be thanking her for this - especially since he caught Thomas' eyes enough times to know that this interest wasn't one-sided.
He'd witnessed, of course, Thomas being a shameless flirt at any given opportunity - not only with him, but with almost everyone around him, true - but that did not change the fact that Edwin was very much into him. Honestly, seeing his easy flirtation only made Edwin want to be able to capture King's attention even more. Preferably in a way that would allow him to keep it all the time.
At first, Edwin wasn’t sure how seriously he could treat this little thing he had with Thomas. King's teasing and suggestive comments made Edwin think that maybe it could be something brief - just sharing the bed a time or two - but he was happy to discover that Thomas turned out to be a delightful company.
Other than the raw sexual appeal, Thomas proved to have more and more interesting qualities each time Edwin met him; the fact alone that they could easily converse about many various topics made Payne want to pursue the man. They'd spent a long time chatting about so many different things - from ranking modern Sherlock Holmes adaptations, through dealing with cat behavioural issues to the environmental disaster brought onto the world by the greedy men in power - and frankly, it made Edwin happy to see that the man that caught his attention by being attractive could hold it without getting on his back.
Overall, with all the enjoyable conversations, combined with all the lingering glances, accidental touches and gentle teasing, Thomas King was sure to make his presence branded on Edwin's brain.
Edwin found it slightly ridiculous, to be honest; he was thinking about Thomas constantly, replaying their conversations in his head, reminiscing their interactions, and thinking about all the subtle physical contact that made him want more.
Truth be told, maybe he should talk to Niko about the situation; discussing how much of Edwin's want she could find relatable, and how much of it she would deem odd, would make for a stimulating conversation. Plus, she told him several times that she liked it when he shared his perspective: it helped her with writing fanfiction.
But as much as he'd love to chat with his friend, Edwin had to admit that he was feeling slightly shy.
He was embarrassed about how much presence Thomas took in his head, and after knowing each other for so little, too. Maybe he also didn't want to bother his asexual friend with the depth of cravings that went into Edwin's thoughts about Niko's friend.
All of that was to say… Yes, Edwin was rather glad that Niko kept inviting Thomas to places.
…He really was glad that she did, Edwin thought again some time later, while being the sole focus of Thomas' social attention as they were doing the dishes together.
The Game Night started, naturally, with boardgames. After Payne had won three rounds of Clue, Crystal declared the game rigged. The claim was ridiculous, of course, but with no way to prove neither his innocence nor fault, Edwin decided to simply move on with the evening.
Charles and Niko made dinner, and that would usually put Edwin and Crystal on the washing duty. This time, however, Thomas volunteered to take care of the chore - and Edwin offered to help.
Crystal was too busy complaining about the game to smirk at him.
The washing turned out to be rather pleasant as Edwin and Thomas enjoyed an idle chat - and Edwin really enjoyed the way Thomas would sometimes playfully nudge his arm, or steal little glances at his face. It made Edwin feel rather optimistic, and he was really hoping that once the chore was out of the way, he could spend some more time with Thomas-
But the man announced he had to leave because he was working the night shift tonight.
"I wish you could stay," Edwin said later, when he was watching Thomas put on his boots.
"Ugh, wish I could stay too, sweetheart," the casually thrown pet name made Payne bite back a smile. "But I've gotta get this bread, right?" He grinned crookedly. "And anyway, tonight is just a swap - Mick usually covers the night shifts himself, I work afternoons, but something came up, and…" The man trailed off with a shrug.
Once he was all dressed up, he leant against the door and focused his attention on Edwin. "I had fun tonight."
"Me too." Payne dared to take a step closer, and when he saw Thomas' inviting smile, he took another.
It put them close enough that Edwin believed he could feel the warmth of his companion's breath on his lips.
Thomas bit the side of his bottom lip before leaning in slightly, and Edwin closed the distance between them.
The soft, warm touch of Thomas' lips against his felt electrifying. It was a delicate thing - Edwin barely touched King's lips before drawing away, just for a few millimeters, to see what would happen. Fortunately, Thomas followed, and they exchanged tiny, sublime kisses that had barely any pressure in it - neither of them even opened their mouths - nevertheless, the caress still lit up desire for more.
Experimentally, Edwin stroked Thomas' side, and the touch made the man melt against him and sigh with pleasure. It emboldened Edwin to part his lips, just enough to offer the possibility of deepening the kiss; Thomas, however, reached out to hold Edwin's hand, gave it a little squeeze - and with one last peck to the corner of Payne's lips, Thomas drew away.
"Fuck, Edwin, this is lovely, but I’ve gotta go," Thomas said breathlessly. "I don't want to, though."
Edwin was taking deep breaths, his eyes locked on King's lips for a second before he met the man's gaze. The want must've been clear on his face, and he found it mirrored in the way Thomas looked at him with longing. It made Edwin wish they didn't live in a capitalistic society that made work necessary for survival.
"Look, if you'd like to meet sometime… Just the two of us-" Edwin started hesitantly.
"Like a date?" Thomas perked up immediately, a bright smile on his lips, and the sight made Payne's heart beat faster.
Edwin nodded, slightly embarrassed about his own eagerness, and Thomas reached for his phone.
King winced after looking at the screen. "I really need to go if I want to catch the bus, so text me the details?" the man suggested, and his hopeful voice made Edwin feel warm all over.
"I will."
"Smashing," Thomas said with a wink. Then he stepped away from Edwin, put his hand on the handle… And turned quickly, to press one last kiss to Edwin's lips, right on the corner. "Have a good night, Edwin."
"You too."
Edwin and Thomas went on a few dates, and each of them made Edwin more and more interested in Niko's friend.
Sometimes Thomas would recall situations from his work, or the cat shelter where he was volunteering, and Edwin was really rather taken with how knowledgeable and caring the man could be. He could be a right bitch, too, when the clients deserved it, and Payne enjoyed that part of him, as well.
He was playful and teasing, and sometimes he would accidentally touch Edwin in a way that made him wonder how much of this behaviour was casual flirting that was one of Thomas' favourite pastimes and how much of it really meant something.
Edwin allowed himself to feel tentatively optimistic about the whole ordeal; mainly because most of Thomas' flirting was focused on him, and they exchanged texts often enough to make Edwin feel a rush of excitement whenever Thomas' name popped up on his phone screen.
So, yes, they went on a few dates (one that ended up with over an hour and half spent in a bookshop), they had a few chances to snog relentlessly, in a way that made Edwin's blood rush in his veins when he imagined being with Thomas somewhere private -
And as it happened, Edwin was deep in his fantasies about Thomas (SFW kind of fantasies, just to be clear), when his phone vibrated with a message.
Ayo Edwin I need to run some errands, Crystal texted. Charles is going with me. Wanna join?
Intrigued, Edwin said yes.
When they met, Edwin asked what kind of errands Crystal had to run, but he didn't receive the answer - the girl just shrugged and changed the topic of the conversation. Edwin didn't mind.
At least not until he ended up standing in front of a door to the shop called Mick's Tricks.
"Crystal. What are we doing here?" He asked warily, and Crystal just grinned.
"I need to buy some condoms. Thought it's a fun opportunity to see where your crush works."
"Oh my god. I can't just show up at his workplace-"
"Sure you can," Crystal replied. "And anyway, I told you, I actually need to get something.” The young woman gave him a sharp smile. “Don't be a little bitch, Edwin, we all know you're actually a huge bitch."
Edwin snorted at that, but didn't argue. Instead, he decided to worry about how badly this could go. Or maybe he'd be lucky and Thomas wasn't working today-
As they stepped inside the shop, the first thing they noticed was a big cork board with various leaflets and posters. Edwin gave the leaflets a careful look, simply because he was just curious.
He wasn't stalling at all.
The posters varied from night club and sex workers advertisements to information about meetings of various groups - and among the leaflets, there was a familiar one. It was one in purple in black, one that Niko designed for her asexual support group. Edwin smiled; her friend mentioned that this was how she met Thomas. It was lovely to see that the man was supporting the queer community.
Once Edwin could no longer pretend to just look and read the information on the board, he followed Crystal and Charles inside the shop.
It was a medium-sized space. Aside from many sex toys and kink gear on display, Payne spotted a wall lined with shelves. Intrigued, he made a step in the direction - when he heard King's voice.
"…so you'll have to reapply it often. If you don't want to bother with that, I'd say go with silicone lube. It's more slippery, I suppose it works better, although you need to be mindful of the condoms you're using with this one. And you shouldn't use it with silicone toys, it might degrade them with time."
There, by the counter, Thomas was talking to a client. He had a fitted black tshirt on - nothing as flashy or interesting as what he usually favoured, but still very flattering on his body - and his eyes were lined with lightly smudged kohl.
Edwin found himself staring. Nothing new, Thomas King was always sure to get his attention.
Suddenly, Thomas looked to the side pointing on something on one of the shelves - and that was when he spotted Edwin. His face lit up with a smile and he gave him a quick nod of acknowledgement before he carried on with his job.
Edwin could feel that his cheeks got warm, and his heart fluttered in his chest with excitement. Since Thomas was otherwise engaged, Payne decided to busy himself with browsing for a bit more.
He could see Crystal and Charles in a different part of the shop, having a look at different kinds of harnesses… but he did not want to know more details about his friends' sex life, so he turned to browse the shelves with books.
There was a stand with magazines - mostly porn - and there were many books on the shelves. Edwin was pleasantly surprised to find a lot of non-fiction, from history and the kink handbooks to biographies.
He was just thumbing through one of the books when Thomas surprised him by showing up at his side.
"Hi, how can I help you?" The small grin on his lips suggested that he wouldn't mind a little bit of play-pretending, and maybe that was why he adapted the customer-service attitude.
"I'm just browsing. Unless… " Edwin shot him a measuring look, wondering if he could play along with King. "Can you offer any recommendations?"
"Ooh, yeah! What are you looking for? We got some really good non-fiction a few days ago-"
"Other than books?" Edwin asked, hoping that he managed to sound flirtatious instead of just weird. "Staff's choice, or something along those lines?"
A small furrow appeared between Thomas' brows. "I mean… if you're asking about toys, that kind of thing is really subjective, you'd need to tell me more about what you're looking for."
Edwin was debating if he was feeling brave enough to ask What would you enjoy? or would that count as harassing the staff, but before he made the decision, his friends emerged from behind the corner.
"Oh hey folks!" Thomas greeted them brightly, and he clearly relaxed enough to give up the serious persona. "What's up, what are you doing here?"
"We want to peruse your wares mate, what else?"
"Sure thing. Whaddya need?"
Crystal shot an assessing look at Edwin, and it made Payne eye her suspiciously. "You better not try to get me involved in your sex life, Crystal Palace, I do not care for it," the man said in the driest tone possible, and made both Charles and Thomas exchange smiles.
"Mmmm yeah, I'm trying to decide how badly I want to make you uncomfortable."
"We love women who are open about their wants!" Thomas interrupted enthusiastically. "Okay, girl, but let's leave our men for a moment and you can tell me what you're looking for…" King trailed off as he led Crystal to the other side of the room.
Edwin grinned at the word our, and the smile made his best friend chuckle quietly.
"Bloody hell, Edwin, I don't think I've ever seen you so down bad before."
A faint blush appeared on Payne's cheeks as he let his eyes down bashfully. "What can I say, Charles… I really do like him."
Rowland regarded him carefully, as if making an assessment. "Should I give him the shovel talk?"
"Don't you dare!" Edwin's protest was sharp, although he tried to keep his voice hushed.
"Oh come on, now I definitely have to do it!"
Their bickering went on for some time, until Crystal and Thomas came back - Crystal with a small paper bag with the shop logo on it.
Charles grabbed the bag and had the look inside. Whatever he found there brought a blush to his cheeks, and made him clear his throat as he bit back a smile. Then he regarded the sign on the paper bag. "What is it, a buttplug with a ribbon?" he asked, possibly wanting to direct the conversation away from the purchase in his hands.
"Oh fuck off!" The interpretation made Thomas laugh. "It's the ace of spades! You know, Mick's Tricks, something about doing magic in bed-"
"Is that the reason for the logo?"
"I mean, to be fair I never asked Mick what inspired him. But the sign got my attention when I was walking down the street, so I visited… And somehow, I ended up working here," King explained with a small shrug. "Oh by the way, we have a shitton of stickers, do you want some? Come on, I have them on the counter…"
They were both panting, hands on each other's bodies, and Edwin could feel Thomas' furious heartbeat in the place where his lips were pressed to the pulse point on King's neck.
Edwin kneaded his lover's arse, and pulled Thomas closer, trying to grind his tented trousers against the muscular thigh, seeking to alleviate the pressure-
But King pulled away, looking well-nigh drunk from the kisses exchanged. He put a bit of distance between them, and Edwin almost whined - but he had too much decorum to actually do it, so he just looked Thomas in the eyes, half-longing, half-pleading.
"I've gotta go, sweetheart," Thomas' voice was apologetic. "I really wish I haven't, but-"
"You're always running away," Payne tried to joke, but the comment put a weird expression on Thomas' face.
"I'm not," King uttered a bit too quickly. "I just need to go to work-"
"I know," Edwin sighed, brushing his fingers against the man's exposed midriff.
It made a shiver run through Thomas, and with his hair dishevelled, his lipstick smudged, Edwin really didn't want to let him go.
King seemed almost morose as he went to fix his make up, and it made Edwin feel uneasy for just a second - before he realised that the man was most likely trying to cool down after their snogging. He had to go to work, after all, while Edwin was free to stay home and enjoy the very fresh memory of their making out.
Any signs of worry left Edwin's mind when Thomas offered him a few more kisses before leaving.
Once he disappeared, Edwin rested his back against the door with a loud sigh. Despite being alone, he still bit back the smile that wanted to creep on his lips.
While Thomas' teasing left Edwin a bit pent up, he had to admit he enjoyed it, too. Crystal might've called King a player in the past, but Edwin really didn't mind all the playing, as long as it was with him.
And indeed, Thomas had the eyes only for him, and Payne enjoyed all the attention - and the affection, as well.
He really found the man to be lovely. And he was starting to think that he'd like to make the things between them exclusive; he'd like to make sure they were on the same page regarding this fresh, exciting thing that was growing between them.
“I’ve been wondering…” Edwin started hesitantly, and took a sip of his coffee to buy himself a little more time.
Thomas looked at him, his attention fixed on Payne so firmly he almost walked into a bench.
“Shit!”
Fortunately, he managed to avoid spilling his drink, and instead he just earned himself a fond chuckle from Edwin.
They went for a walk, and Edwin really enjoyed the casual meeting. It was rather unexpected - Thomas randomly texted him that he was in the area, and whether he wouldn't like to hang out… and of course Edwin wanted that.
They sat on the bench, close enough that their shoulders and thighs pressed against each other.
“I’m not sure if you would be interested in that, of course…” Edwin took a deep breath, and caught the golden gaze. “I’ve been wondering if you’d like to consider this…” he gestured between them with his reusable mug. “If you’d like to consider us an… Item.”
"An item,” Thomas repeated, and he looked as if he was biting back a laugh.
The expression did not deceive Edwin. He could see the lovely pink on his hopefully-boyfriend-to-be’s cheeks.
Payne just arched one brow, prompting the man to answer.
At that, Thomas could hold his laughter no longer - but it was a sound of delight and happiness. “Fuck yes, I’d love to be an item with you,” Thomas leant in his personal space and rested his head on Edwin’s shoulder with a happy sigh. “Thought you’d never ask,” the man confessed.
Edwin frowned. “Why?”
Thomas straightened up enough to raise his head from his boyfriend’s(!) shoulder, but he slouched on the bench. “I mean… I know people talk. They say different things about me,” he explained with an uneasy expression.
“Oh, really now. Why do you think I should care about the opinions of people I do not give a damn about?” Edwin scoffed quietly, and he interlaced his fingers with Thomas’. “I like you; that’s what matters, in my opinion.” He considered for a second. “And of course the fact that Niko adores you.”
“And the feeling is mutual,” this time there was a smile in King’s voice.
Edwin squeezed the man’s hand, and Thomas cosied up to him again.
“You know,” the man’s words were whispered against Edwin’s ear, and he felt a pleasant shiver run through him. “If you’re game, it’d be fun to scandalise the public a bit,” he offered, and pressed a quick but wet kiss underneath Edwin’s jaw.
“Oh god,” Payne almost jumped at the unexpected sensation, although he had to admit that he enjoyed it. “I believe this kind of activity is best pursued privately.”
There was a small noise - somewhat disgruntled? - as Thomas petulantly hid his face in Edwin’s neck. “This is more fun, though,” he decided, his fingers caressing the delicate skin on the inside of Payne’s wrist.
Edwin allowed himself a moment to just enjoy the sensation - enjoy the petting, the warmth of the body next to him, Thomas’ company secured for the foreseeable future… And he smiled, content with the development between them.
Edwin was relaxed; he was enjoying the company of his friends and the warm arm of his boyfriend wrapped around his shoulders.
Edwin and Thomas were occupying a small loveseat, chatting with their friends, and Payne was so comfortable that he was feeling as if he would doze off soon-
"Here comes the cake!" Charles' voice made Edwin snap out of the sleepy haze.
Suddenly, his partner's embrace disappeared as Thomas enthusiastically reached for the plates with dessert, and in doing so, he had to let go of Edwin.
It would've made Edwin roll his eyes, but when he sat up, Thomas was already holding two plates, each with a big slice of cake, so he was willing to forgive him the offhand treatment.
They decided to celebrate Halloween with a small get-together. Any occasion was good for a bit of fun, and dressing up with friends definitely made for some good fun.
Edwin had lost his deerstalker hat and Inverness cape some time ago; he indulged in the fancy clothing for a few pictures, but overall, it was a bit too warm inside to sit there in an honest-to-god cape.
…Overheating was not a problem for his boyfriend, who showed up wearing a long golden robe with pyjama pants… And nothing on top.
Edwin could admit that he found the sight of Thomas' bare chest distracting. Oh well, Thomas King was a gorgeous man, and he wasn't afraid of flaunting his attractiveness every now and then. Especially now, when he was grinning slyly whenever he caught Edwin staring.
Once they were sitting next to each other, it was a bit easier to focus on the conversation.
"What are you dressed up as, anyway?" Crystal asked at some point, throwing a judgemental look at Thomas' get up.
"Why, I'm a lazy cat, of course," the man smirked. "Ready to spend the whole day in bed, sleeping."
"I thought you might be more into different kinds of bed activities," Charles teased lightly as he finished serving the dessert.
"Like what?" Thomas asked, forking a bite of the cake, and then he raised it to his mouth.
Before Charles - or anyone, for that matter - managed to reply, there was a loud moan in the room.
The noise was coming from Edwin's boyfriend, and Edwin was rather affected by it. He felt warmth crawling up his cheeks and a wave of heat in his abdomen as he took in Thomas' blissed out expression.
"Oh, fuck, this is the best thing I've ever had in my mouth," King declared, eating the cake with enthusiasm that Charles usually showed for spaghetti. Speaking of… "Rowland, you made this?" The man's disbelief was obvious.
Charles shrugged casually, but nodded. "Sort of a tradition for parties, mate. Apparently, my baking is pretty aces," he said with a bit of shy pride in his voice.
"Huh," Thomas regarded Charles, impressed. Then he had one more bite of the cake. "You have some hidden depths." He hummed with pleasure at the taste of moist vanilla sponge, not-too-sweet Swiss meringue buttercream and tarty blackcurrant preserves.
Edwin enjoyed the sweet treat as well, but he had to admit that he enjoyed the noises Thomas made even more. He really wished he could hear them again, albeit in different circumstances.
Some time later in the evening, Edwin noticed that Thomas' hand disappeared in the pocket of his robe… And Payne was sure his boyfriend was trying to grab his phone - but as it turned out, he reached for his vape.
"Do you really need to use this monstrosity-" Edwin started to complain, but he was loudly interrupted by Crystal.
"Oh no fucking way, cat boy. You're not allowed to vape here," the young woman declared decisively.
Thomas whined. "Oh come on, you won't even smell it-"
"Wanna use it? Go outside," Crystal's expression was adamant as she pointed with her chin at the balcony.
Thomas whined louder, and as infuriating as it was, Edwin had to admit he found it adorably ridiculous.
"But it's cold outside-"
"I don't care." Then she narrowed her eyes at the man. "And if you try to be sneaky and go to vape in the bathroom, I'll know it, and you'll be banned from ever coming here again. "
Thomas turned to his boyfriend. "Edwin, say something. Your friend is bullying me."
"I don't think she's bullying you, she's looking out for your health," Edwin said half-heartedly.
"I'm multitasking, actually."
King shook his head, resigned, but took a step in the direction of balcony-
When his boyfriend's voice stopped him.
"You're going outside?" Edwin asked with a frown.
"Well, you forced me to-"
"Thomas, like you've noticed, it's cold. And you're half-naked."
"Nevermind, it's just for a minute," he waved his hand dismissively and moved towards the door leading to the balcony.
Payne huffed, annoyed, and grabbed his Inverness cape before he followed his partner outside.
"You'll catch your death like this," Edwin complained, closing the door behind him. Then he draped his cape over Thomas' shoulders.
The man's mouth twitched in a smile. "You realize I'm still here with my tits out?"
"Well, I'm not the one who chose your costume."
"Guess I'll have to use you as my shield. Come up here," King pulled Edwin into embrace, circling his arms around the man's shoulders and pressing him close.
Leaning against his partner, with his back plastered against his hot boyfriend's chest was not a bad place to be, Edwin thought as he closed his eyes and relaxed into the hug.
Payne could sense the steady raise and fall of Thomas' chest as the man was giving his lungs a chemical burn. To his credit, whatever blasted things he inhaled, it did not have a strong scent, and Edwin didn't think he would get a headache from this.
Suddenly, he remembered something
"Why do you even use this damned thing if you smoke normal cigarettes as well? Isn't one source of toxic substances enough?"
Thomas' voice was perplexed. "What are you talking about?"
Edwin felt slightly embarrassed about bringing this up, but since he already started it… At least he didn't have to look King in the eyes. "I remember that you've been asking random people for a smoke a time or two before we- um. Before we got together."
Thomas let out an amused breath. "Yeah, that's right. You know I don't do that anymore though, yeah?"
"Yes, I've noticed. But my question is… I think I'd just like to know why-"
"Look, asking for a cigarette is a good conversation starter," Thomas shrugged, and Edwin could feel that with his whole body. "And I think flirting is fun. So yeah, I used to do that."
Edwin was quiet for a moment, and it provoked King to ask, "What, you're jealous?"
"Of course I'm not. I haven't seen you do it in ages, and-"
"And I think it's curious that you remember it at all," Thomas mused. Edwin could hear that the man was smiling when he remarked, "Looks like you've been keeping a keen eye on me."
Edwin's lack of reply was confirmation enough. Fortunately, it only made Thomas chuckle fondly and cuddle him up closer.
Once the vape was deposited safely back in his pocket, Thomas prompted Edwin to turn in his arms, so they could face each other.
Edwin allowed himself to be manoeuvred, and with Thomas' face nuzzled into his neck, Payne decided he was rather enjoying his evening.
As it often happened, it took barely a few moments before Thomas searched for Edwin's lips, and his palms cupped and caressed Payne's face. One of his hands slid down his throat, and to the side, and then Thomas was winding up his fingers in the hair on the back of his head.
Edwin gasped, and when his mouth opened, Thomas nipped on his lower lip gently. Then, he attempted a slow, exploratory swipe of his tongue before exchanging kisses in earnest.
It was the first moment of privacy they got this evening - at long last, partially hidden from their friends' eyes. Payne was really glad that Thomas decided to use the opportunity to spend some intimate time together.
As their kisses got more and more passionate, Edwin's hands explored his lover's body. One of his hands squeezed Thomas' pectoral, while the other teased down the length of the man's sternum, before it went lower and ran over the waistband of Thomas' trousers. When Edwin flicked his thumb over his boyfriend's nipple, a small keening sound escaped King's mouth - and it was immediately swallowed by Edwin's kiss.
Edwin was feeling hot all over, and he moaned when Thomas closed his fist around Edwin's hair. Payne frenziedly rocked his hips against his lover, his hardness rubbing on Thomas' hip-
Suddenly, Thomas let go of him.
His hand escaped Edwin's mussed hair, he was panting, and he was blushed with excitement.
Edwin realised his jaw was hanging loose, confused at the sudden lack of the warm mouth against it.
"I'm dying for some more of that cake," Thomas announced, casual as ever, as his hands raised to fix up Edwin's dishevelled shirt. "Do you think Charles is going to spare me an extra slice?"
"I- " Edwin shook his head to snap out of the shock. "I'm sure he is, but-"
"Fucking aces," Thomas said with a small, almost private chuckle. Then he opened the balcony door, grabbed Edwin's hand and pulled him inside the flat.
Apparently, the cat shelter where Thomas volunteered was having an open day - and Edwin was invited to visit
He was already rather taken with the man when Crystal tricked him into visiting the sex shop where Thomas worked. Over the course of their visit, multiple clients required Thomas' attention, and Edwin's boyfriend proved to be very knowledgeable and understanding, showing patience and supplying his clients with the words for certain activities without sounding like a patronising prick.
King, for his part, was also very discreet, and if his clients kept their voice hushed, Thomas didn't hesitate to tone down as well. But as it happened, Edwin had a very good hearing (and he'd been curious about Thomas' expertise enough to eavesdrop… Just a little).
Seeing as Mick's Tricks was King's job, Edwin was very curious about this off-duty, volunteer Thomas. His boyfriend was passionate about the cats he'd been helping with, and although the cat hair on his trousers really annoyed Edwin, he was willing to suffer through the medium-sized bother, if only it meant being able to see Thomas in his element.
Payne thought it would be hard to make him fall for Thomas more, but seeing the man as he was fulfilling his duties - taking care of the cats, educating people about them, allowing his out-going persona to shine as he was answering all and any questions with the same knowledge and patience he'd shown in his work, but in a more relaxed, playful manner - really made him appreciate his sweetheart even more.
Edwin had known for a very long time what a gorgeous person Thomas was on the outside. It was a real joy to see over and over again that he was just as beautiful on the inside.
The aftermath of the event took more work than initially expected - the shelter's staff had to guide a few people through the procedure of adopting, explaining how the process looked like and what were the requirements - and Edwin waited through it, because he wanted to walk Thomas home.
Once King was done with cleaning, and he helped to put the photos from the event on the shelter's facebook page, he was finally able to clock off.
"You didn't have to wait," Thomas noticed as they left the cat shelter to walk the dark street.
It was a nice, warm evening, and Thomas looked satisfied with a job well done - as if he'd been recharged by all the time spent among the people and the cats alike, and interactions with them.
Edwin found it baffling - for him, interactions with strangers were exhausting, and he couldn't imagine spending a whole day the way his partner just did, all while keeping his good mood, even when faced with unruly children and ignorant adults.
At the same time, he knew that although social interactions were revitalising for Thomas, the man would appreciate some gentler company; someone who wouldn't bother him with constant questions, and with whom he could relax.
Edwin gazed at his boyfriend, not even trying to hide the overwhelming fondness. "I know, but I wanted to."
Edwin's simple answer made a smile appear on Thomas' lips, and he linked their hands as they were making slow steps and chatted about the people attending the event - and of course, about the cats.
"I don't think I could have a cat," Edwin admitted with a small frown. "I find the ever-present hair too troublesome."
"Once you have a cat, you learn to live with the hair." Thomas shrugged. Then he looked down, before biting his lip and looking up at Edwin again. "It was nice to see you there today, by the way. Thanks."
Payne squeezed Thomas' hand, warmth spreading in his chest as he took in his boyfriend's shy but pleased expression.
"I'm afraid I showed up entirely for my own benefit," Edwin teased before the atmosphere got too sappy.
"Oh yeah?"
"Indeed. I took pleasure in seeing you like this, so…" Payne mulled the words over in his brain for a minute, before he decided that there was no reason to play coy and hold back. "So passionate, so happy. You're incredible.”
"Aww, bet you're just saying that to get in my pants," Thomas joked, his cheeks darkening with a blush visible just enough in the light of the street lamps.
Edwin smiled at the jab. "I am sincere." He cleared his throat, sensing an opening. "But if my words work on you like so, well, I wouldn't mind."
He was hoping for light-hearted banter, but his words made Thomas go quiet.
For a moment, Payne was worried about overstepping and making things awkward.
But then he realised that he had a tendency to overthink, and he tried to calm down. He reminded himself that Thomas was probably just exhausted, and he had enough social interactions tonight to use up his social battery to the point that left no space for idle flirting.
When they got to the building where Thomas lived, Edwin found it hard to let go of his lover. Their goodbye kiss prolonged, like it usually did, and Payne enjoyed the warm touch of his lover’s lips, his sweet and tender affection.
They'd been a couple for long enough that Edwin allowed himself to be a bit more direct. That was why after he pulled away, he gazed into his lover's eyes. His hand was moving up and down King's side lazily, long strokes going from the man's chest down to his hip and up again. "May I come upstairs?"
Thomas closed his eyes and sighed, then his lips tightened, as if he swallowed unpleasant medicine. "You know what, Edwin, I'm dead on my feet, I really don't think I could be any fun company."
"You're always fun," the man assured him with a small smile, and the comment made Thomas perk up slightly. "But I understand, of course. You had a long day." Edwin squeezed Thomas' hand lightly, and raised it to his lips, to place a delicate kiss on his lover's knuckles. "And you've been amazing today, both with the cats and the people. And I'm saying this without any ulterior motive."
The man let out an amused huff. "You're such a charmer."
"Am I now? How curious. I find myself utterly bewitched by you," Payne said easily, and he really enjoyed seeing the way Thomas was looking at him, agape and speechless suddenly.
Edwin quietly thanked Niko for all the romance novels she'd been lending him over the years of their friendship.
Satisfied with the impression made, he inclined his head to press his lips to Thomas' cheek. "Goodnight, dear."
Things between Edwin and Thomas had become rather serious some time ago.
Edwin Payne could admit that meeting Thomas King had a massive effect on him. He’d become infatuated startlingly quickly, and he found the man’s presence intoxicating each time they met.
It might’ve made Edwin kind of stupid, he was willing to concede to that.
But Edwin wasn’t that stupid.
He noticed that Thomas was always willing to both steal and spare a kiss, and he was a big fan of snogging, in general. They’d enjoyed plenty of necking sessions, and sometimes, Edwin was hit with a realisation that it was slightly incredible how much pleasure someone’s company - someone’s body - could bring to a person.
But eventually Edwin noticed that any time he was trying to move things further, Thomas would come up with an excuse.
Payne hadn't noticed the pattern for quite some time. It was always ‘I need to get ready to work’, ‘I’ve gotta go to the cats’, ‘oh shit I left the stove on-’ but at some point, with Thomas’ reasons getting more and more ridiculous, Edwin thought he’d address the elephant in the room.
He wouldn’t dare to persuade Thomas, but he would prefer to know what was up. He’d appreciate honesty instead of the lousy excuses.
Before Edwin built up the courage to ask his boyfriend about his avoidance when it came to sex matters, he tried to figure it out by himself.
Maybe the man was waiting for Edwin to initiate an open conversation about sex - about health matters and preferences. But with how sex-positive King was, why would he be waiting for Edwin to start something he was probably more prepared to lead himself, anyway?
It had to be something else.
But the longer Edwin was thinking about this… The more ridiculous his ideas were.
He knew of Thomas’ fondness for jewellery, and so one day, when they were watching a movie, Edwin started playing semi-mindlessly with the man's hands (fidgeting with his rings and bracelets was weirdly soothing). He examined the rings on his boyfriend’s fingers, and later he did his research on the abstinence rings.
None of the silver, black, and gold pieces of jewellery looked like the rings from various christian communities Edwin found online.
And Thomas didn’t strike him as a religious person, anyway. But who knew, really?
…Or maybe he was the type to wait until marriage?
A few complicated feelings roused at the idea, but Edwin didn’t pay them much mind. After all, at the moment, he wasn’t after cheap thrills - he was after information.
Thomas was so wonderfully indulgent and decadent when it came to touch. Each time they enjoyed a little necking session, Payne could experience Thomas’ excitement. He couldn’t count the times when he kissed him in just the right spot to feel his rushing heartbeat - it was clear that Thomas was as deep in the throes of passion as Edwin was.
So what was the reason behind holding back?
Truth be told, Edwin feared coming off as entitled or demanding - but it wasn’t that Edwin had any expectations. He was just curious, and he was hoping that it would help him to understand his boyfriend better.
The next time their playful conversation turned into something that involved more fondling than talking, and Thomas climbed to straddle his lap as he was kissing Edwin ravenously, at first, Payne almost forgot about all of his ponderings. All he cared about was feeling more of Thomas, being able to feel, and hear, and taste him. His hand slid underneath the man’s tshirt, caressing the warm, golden skin on Thomas’ stomach, while the other curiously touched the buckle on the belt King had around his hips-
And that was the moment when Thomas cupped Edwin’s face with both hands, and his hungry kiss ebbed away into a peck on Payne’s bottom lip.
He also recoiled slightly - he was still on Edwin’s lap, but he moved away just enough that Edwin’s hand fell to Thomas’ thigh.
They were both breathing heavily, their snogging bringing colours to their cheeks and lips and shine to their eyes.
Thomas looked absolutely delectable like this - impassioned, gorgeous, tempting as ever - and the words were out of Edwin’s mouth before he had the time to give them any thought. “Thomas, why do you not want to have sex with me?”
King froze, and his blissed out expression turned wide-eyed and startled. His whole body stiffened, and belatedly, Payne realised that he had messed up.
He shouldn’t let his brain make any operative decisions - especially about the words that leave his mouth - when his blood was in the process of relocating south.
“I- I mean, please don’t get it the wrong way,” Edwin pleaded, and he rested his palms on the sides of Thomas’ legs, in what he hoped to be a soothing gesture. Something squeezed unpleasantly in his chest when he could feel that his boyfriend flinched. “It’s not that I want to demand anything, I swear, I’m just… Look, I’m simply curious.” He tried to put all honesty in his words, because it was killing him to see the wary look in King’s eyes.
For a moment, nothing happened, and they were just both sitting there, still and uncomfortable. Eventually, Thomas must've estimated his boyfriend’s sincerity, and he breathed deeply.
Edwin felt uncomfortable seeing how much of a scare he gave the man he adored so much.
Thomas tightened his lips and tipped his head down. His eyes were squeezed tightly, as if he was bracing himself for a blow, or for some kind of a disaster.
“Thomas, please…” Payne's voice was gentle. “You don’t have to tell me if you don’t want to. I guess my curiosity just got better of me, and I realise it was an insensitive, invasive question… It’s just, I've been wondering, and I got some unusual ideas, and I decided that maybe it’s better to ask than to make assumptions.” Edwin swallowed nervously, hoping that the next words he was about to say would either get a confirmation or turn out to be so ridiculous that they would dissipate the tension. “I was wondering if you want me to get tested first… Or is it a whole other thing, like, maybe you took some kind of… of a vow of chastity, or-”
The sound of a loud, choked off laugh stopped Payne from talking.
Thomas was slightly pale, but at least now he was looking Edwin in the eyes - and he was incredulous. “Vow of chastity? Sweetheart, I’m not a fucking monk, you should know something about this.”
“Oh, I do know,” Edwin offered him a frail smile. The situation was still tense, but not as much as it’d been a moment ago, and at least Thomas was looking at him - granted, he was looking at him as if he was slightly demented, but-
“I’m asexual.”
Now it was Edwin’s turn for a quick, disbelieving laugh. “Sure.”
Thomas’ expression grew cold.
Well, that was awkward.
Edwin tried to save it. “I know that the conversation took a weird turn, but I’m asking seriously-”
“And I’m giving you a serious answer.”
Edwin had never heard Thomas sound like this - this cold, this appalled. There was hurt in his eyes that seemed to threaten to turn into tears.
“Oh.” It dawned onto Edwin how badly he fucked up. Again.
“You thought I was joking?” Thomas asked, and his voice was so pained that it made Edwin feel like the biggest twat in the world.
(Maybe he was).
“Darling, I'm sorry, I don't know why I said that- I wasn't thinking-”
“Yeah, I’ve noticed.” King huffed, and his voice was bitter when he said, “So what now? You’re gonna accuse me of leading you on?”
“No, Thomas, of course not.” Edwin tried to hold his hands, but they were curled up in tight fists.
There was a pained grimace on Thomas’ face as he asked, “Is the idea of me being ace so fucking laughable?”
“No, I just- God." Edwin fumbled over his words. With Thomas' casual attitude towards sexuality in general, the idea of him making a light-hearted joke didn't sound utterly unbelievable… Or that was what Edwin thought before he misjudged the situation grossly. "I apologise, it was just- unexpected.”
“Unexpected,” Thomas repeated with a scoff. “What, because I like to make out and people call me a slut it means I’ve gotta be into sex too?” A strangled sob interrupted his words, but when the man spoke again, what spilled from him was anger, not tears. “Fucking hell, you asked if I'm a christianity cult freak but when I'm coming out, it's so fucking unbelievable-”
“I'm sorry, I shouldn't've done that-”
"Yeah, that was a total car crash on your part." It seemed that the angry snark helped Thomas to regain control of his emotions.
He no longer looked like he was about to cry; now he just looked pissed.
Yet again, there was this heavy uncomfortable silence between them. Nevertheless… Thomas did not leave his lap.
It gave Edwin hope.
He opened his mouth to ask-
“Are you gonna break up with me?” Thomas asked first, and his voice was small, scared.
“What?” Edwin could barely comprehend the question. “Why would I- Oh god, Thomas-”
At that point, Payne put his arms around Thomas and pulled him into an embrace.
Although he stiffened first, it was just for a second - then Thomas went willingly, and it made Edwin breathe with relief to see that his boyfriend allowed this kind of touch.
They sat like this for a few minutes, and Edwin was rubbing soothing circles on Thomas’ back, and he used the time to ponder what a bloody idiot he was.
He could hardly believe that he really behaved like that - with absolutely no compassion, no better than someone who only saw the rainbow when it was in the sky and not on, let's say, pride merchandise.
He fucked up so badly.
He hurt the man he had feelings for. It was a wonder Thomas even let himself be held like this, but Edwin was grateful for it; he hoped he’d be able to make King relaxed enough to be receptive to Edwin’s apology.
He wasn't sure how much time passed before Thomas straightened his back. Edwin could notice his lover was slightly puffy around his eyes, and it made another powerful surge of guilt wash over him.
“So what now?” Thomas asked again, his voice slightly hollow and his eyes red from crying.
“What do you mean?” Edwin made sure to keep his voice quiet, gentle - he didn’t want to startle Thomas again.
The man sniffed. “Do you think… Do you think you could do this thing with me?” There was fear in his eyes. “If I’m ace?”
The pained uncertainty made Edwin snap out of it at long last.
It finally registered with him what he’d done: Thomas trusted him enough to come out, and he’d dismissed it, like the biggest cunt in the world.
He hated himself for this, for the way his boyfriend was looking at him scared and unsure, for breaking his trust.
For God's sake, Edwin was gay, his whole social circle was queer - how could he have done this?
A rogue thought appeared in his head: if anyone treated Niko this way, Edwin would be all in favour of banishing such an individual from the civilised society.
And now he was the one who acted like that.
Edwin was about to spiral some more into self-loathing, but Thomas made a small sound in his throat, and it reminded Edwin that he hadn’t answered his partner’s question.
God, he kept screwing up this interaction.
"Look, Thomas… I absolutely hate the fact that I made you feel like this. I'm sorry, truly." He swallowed thickly, and wrapped his hands around Thomas'. "But it doesn't change my feelings in the slightest. If only you'll find it in yourself to be gracious enough to forgive my despicable behaviour…"
King was quiet as he was trying to digest the situation. When his eyes moved to Edwin, they were distrustful.
He still didn't say anything.
Edwin's heart was in his throat, and finally, the fear that Thomas might decide to end the things between them settled inside him.
"I behaved horribly, I know that," Payne said again. "I see that I hurt you, and I feel wretched about it. But I promise you, Thomas, I'll never do that again-"
"Yeah, I don't suppose I'll have to come out to you again," the man replied, and there was dejection underneath the bite.
Edwin let his head down, ashamed. "No, I don't suppose you will."
After a few beats of silence, Payne tried again. "I care about you, Thomas. And… if you want to think about it…"
"Me? I might want to think about it?" the man scoffed, and it pained Edwin to hear how bitter Thomas' voice was. "Maybe that's what you should do, huh? Reconsider if I'm worth it, if you can't get your dick wet?"
"Oh goodness, Thomas-" Edwin sighed, exasperated. Then he reminded himself that his boyfriend was feeling even worse than Edwin was at the moment. He tried to finally say the right thing. "You're worth everything, and it's not conditional. As long as you want me to stay, I will. Because that's what I want." Payne looked into Thomas' eyes. "I promise that I'm better than this pathetic display I've offered you tonight.
Thomas regarded him in silence for a few moments. Eventually he said, "I think I know that, Edwin. We've known each other for months and-" he shook his head, resigned. "I really hoped it would go differently."
"I apologise." Then, Edwin tilted his head to the side. "Why didn't you tell me earlier?
King appeared slightly withdrawn. "I was scared. That you wouldn't want me anymore," his voice was the smallest Edwin had ever heard it.
"Oh, Thomas," Edwin let go of the man's hands so he could slide his palms up his lover's arms and pull him into a tight embrace. "I'm sorry for- for everything."
"Yeah, you've mentioned," King's voice was slightly muffled from where he was nuzzled in Edwin's neck.
A frail smile appeared on Payne's lips at his partner's small retort.
A few shivers ran through Thomas and it made Edwin realise that he was crying again.
He could only hope that this time, Thomas’ tears were caused by relief, not pain.
Edwin kept stroking Thomas' back as if he was dealing with a clingy cat. Eventually, however, Edwin pressed a kiss on top of the man's head. "It's getting late."
He could feel that King stiffened at the words.
"Would you…" Edwin began awkwardly. "Would you like me to stay the night, or are you sick of my face already?"
The man finally vacated Payne's lap, and losing his weight was a disappointing feeling.
Thomas curled up on the couch, and looked at Edwin.
"Oh, no, I don't think I could ever get sick of your face, you're too pretty," Thomas declared sniffily, but the smile on his lips looked a bit forced. After a beat of silence, he said, "I don't know, Edwin."
Edwin furrowed his brows, waiting to hear something more. He tried to give Thomas time to collect his thoughts
The man chewed on his cheek. "I feel like… I'd like some time alone to think about this," Thomas confessed. "But at the same time… I'm kinda worried that if I let you go now, that'll be it, and you're just gonna ghost me and I won't see you again," he chuckled nervously.
"Do you really think so lowly of me?" Edwin couldn't keep a slightly offended note from his voice.
"I'll be honest, sweetheart, I have no idea what to think," Thomas said with feigned lightness.
"I'd be happy to stay with you, or I can come visit tomorrow. Your call."
A sour expression appeared on King's face as he considered the offer. "It'd be a rather underwhelming first night together, don't you think?"
"I do not, actually. I'm happy to be with you. But I don't know if my presence brings you more comfort or distress, at the moment." Edwin decided that being straightforward was the best way to go.
Thomas let out a long, heavy exhale, as if he didn't know, either.
"Look, if you'd rather have me go away… Do you think we could meet tomorrow? So we could talk?"
Thomas ran his tongue over his teeth before eyeing Payne warily again.
Maybe Edwin's remorse was showing on his face, because at last, Thomas let out a long, exasperated exhale. "Oh, screw it. Fine, you can stay." He rolled his shoulders and crossed his arms over his chest. "But because you behaved like the straightest of straight men, you're sleeping on the couch."
Edwin breathed with relief. "That works for me."
After that, it all went mostly smoothly. Thomas fetched him a blanket and a pair of sweatpants, and then told him that while he was going to have a shower, Edwin was free to do whatever he wanted in the meantime.
Edwin's ruminating mind decided to make him think some more about what a damn dimwit he was. He had a suspicion he wouldn't be able to let go of this thing for quite some time; he suffered not only because of the pain he'd caused his boyfriend, but also because of the indirect disrespect he'd shown Niko… And, to be fair, acting the way he did was an offence to his own intelligence. So he needed to mourn that, as well.
For a split second he experienced the urge to text one of his friends about it, but… None of them would leave it as a quick vent, and Edwin wasn't yet ready to face his friends' reactions that would be, undoubtedly and deservedly, negative.
Trying to escape from the unpleasant feelings of guilt (that wouldn't leave him anytime soon, but he needed at least a moment to think about something else before he tried to talk to Thomas again), he changed into the sweatpants Thomas brought him, and then he carefully folded the trousers and the shirt he wore during the day.
The water was still running in the bathroom, so in order to occupy himself with something, Edwin grabbed one of the books from his boyfriend's shelves. He busied himself with reading, although as soon as he heard the bathroom door click open, he looked up from the novel.
When Thomas emerged from the bathroom, his hair was still damp around his face and he was wrapped in a fluffy pink robe. The sight brought a smile to Edwin's lips… A smile that waned when he saw that King was pointedly avoiding looking at him.
Well, that was fair. But it still stung. Which probably was the purpose.
Payne sighed as quietly as possible and waited for what would happen next. If Thomas went to his bedroom without saying anything, Edwin would try to rest for the night as well… Although there was a quiet hope in him that maybe his lover would want his company, after all.
The next time he saw Thomas puttering around, the man was wearing a set of pyjamas that looked oddly familiar. The t-shirt was decorated with the design of some sort of a creature wearing a black hood, with long, pointy ears. The trousers had ruffles around the hems. The set was kept in purple, white and black, and…
Edwin definitely recognised it.
Before he managed to ask about it, Thomas surprised him by barging on the couch next to him. He pushed under his arm, inviting himself into Edwin's embrace.
Payne smiled but said nothing. Instead, he pulled the man closer, and pressed a kiss on top of his head.
For a moment, they were sitting in silence; Thomas with his arms wrapped around his boyfriend's waist while Edwin was stroking the man's back.
Eventually, it seemed that King relaxed a bit - he melted on top of Edwin's body, shaping himself to fit in with him perfectly. It emboldened Edwin to try to start a conversation.
"Do you have a matching set with Niko?" Payne asked, referring to the pyjamas.
"Yeah," Thomas' answer was slightly muffled since his face was pressed in Edwin's side. "We decided that Kuromi is an asexual icon. Be gay do crime style. She's ungovernable. They can't catch her, except on April 6th."
"April 6th? That's oddly specific."
"Ace visibility day. Kuromi's free to spread mischief and felony all year round except on April 6th."
Amusement crept in Thomas' voice during this explanation, and hearing it allowed Edwin to chuckle lightly.
The atmosphere lightened up, and eventually, Edwin decided to approach the topic again. "Thomas… Look, I'm really sorry about tonight-"
"Shut up," his boyfriend cut him off immediately. "Just- leave it."
The way he nestled into his side suggested that in Thomas' opinion, Edwin had better things to offer than his clumsy apology
Obediently, Payne tried to refrain from touching the matter again… And instead he kept on caressing Thomas, and it was a really soothing and relaxing activity for him - and he could only hope that it was for Thomas, as well.
The next noise Payne made was a loud yawn, and it prompted his boyfriend to unglue himself from his side.
He put just enough distance between them so he could look Edwin in the face. "Are you gonna make moves on me if I ask you to come to bed with me?"
"How can you even-" Payne sputtered. "Of course not, I would never!" A sharp scoff preceded the bitching. "You know that I know better now, and frankly, there is no need to-"
Thomas sighed, but it seemed good-humoured. "A simple ‘no’ would suffice, Edwin."
Edwin almost pouted, and his accompanying glare at King made the man smile. "You're so kissable when you're sulking," Thomas declared lightly before he got up from the couch. "Come on, let's go to bed now.”
“I really wanted to apologise for my behaviour yesterday. I should’ve done better-”
“Edwin,” King sighed and rolled his eyes. “It’s alright. We talked it out, we’re good now.”
“We are?” Edwin asked hopefully.
Thomas huffed with amusement. “Yeah babe, we are.”
They carried on making breakfast, but suddenly Edwin said, “And… I wanted to apologise for my. Um. Inappropriate behaviour in the past.”
Thomas frowned. "What are you talking about?"
Edwin looked ashamed, all red faced and avoiding King’s eyes. "Well… Sometimes, when we… Uh, when we were spending the time together, I might've been too bold-"
“What the fuck. Edwin, you're not apologising for making out with me, are you?”
“I didn’t want to make you uncomfortable-”
“Holy shit, okay, let me stop you right there.” He scoffed, and it was a rather annoyed sound. “I’m an adult, Edwin. And if you were overstepping, I would’ve told you, yeah? I know you fucking love to overthink everything, but there’s really no need to do that here.”
Payne still had a guilty expression on his face, and it only made Thomas more irritated to see it.
“I told you. We’re good. Stop looking like you’ve beaten me to death with an iron cane.”
The unexpected comparison made Edwin smile. “That’s quite colourful.” After a moment he continued. “Thomas… Do you think you’d be comfortable with telling me more about how you like things? Once again, I’m sorry for making assumptions." He cleared his throat. "I know better now.”
“Better late than never,” he huffed. “But… I’m not sure what to tell you,” Thomas said with a shrug. “You know what I like. You know I like it when you kiss me and when you put your hands on my body." He regarded his boyfriend carefully, and reached out to interlace his fingers with Edwin's. "I enjoy your touch and intimacy. It's just…” He shrugged again.
He was thinking about his words, and Edwin wanted to offer some input - some prompt to help his lover put his thoughts in order - but before he did, Thomas said, “I don’t feel like I need to get off, I don't think it's worth the fuss." He grimaced. "I like to fool around, but I'm not too keen on the whole messy business. It’s just not for me."
"I see.” Payne made a mental note of the information, and he couldn't help but wonder if his boyfriend was simplifying things for him, as if he assumed that Edwin wouldn't understand the nuance.
It wasn't a pleasant thought - being treated like a fool - but that served Edwin right after the way he approached Thomas' coming out.
Suddenly, something occurred to Edwin.
He blushed furiously. “Thomas, and what if… Uh… If we are up to certain activities- the kind you're not interested in… Would you mind if I wanted to- Um...”
After a quick frown, understanding dawned on Thomas.
“Go have a wank in the bathroom?” Thomas supplied casually, and it only made Edwin’s cheeks feel hotter. “Why the hell not.” Then he sighed, slightly exasperated. “Look, Edwin, I’m not trying to police your desires or behaviours or whatever. I would just prefer to… Not be directly involved.” He laughed quietly and then shot his boyfriend a cheeky grin. “Although for the record, feel free to think about me whenever you need inspiration,” he winked at the man.
Edwin's face was burning red which was rather stupid considering that he was an adult man and he was talking to his boyfriend. Unfortunately, he had some old-fashioned sensibilities that sometimes collided with Thomas’ casual sex-positive attitude.
“Aw, you’re cute when you’re embarrassed,” Thomas teased him, and for a moment, Edwin tipped his chin down - but then he decided that the best he could do was to face his boyfriend proudly.
When their eyes met, Thomas’ were gleaming with mischief.
He leant in to steal a kiss.
A quick meeting of their lips turned into something slower, deeper, and for a moment, Edwin was feeling as if there was nothing and nobody else in this damned world but Thomas.
When King pulled away, he was sporting an unusually bashful smile on his kiss-slicked lips. “Thanks for giving me a try,” he whispered in the space between them.
"You have no reason to thank me," Edwin assured him ardently.
"Well, yes, I know I'm a catch," Thomas’ flippant declaration made Edwin grin, but then, the man’s voice turned slightly more sombre. "I'm just glad you've decided to notice that."
So Thomas’ coming out to his boyfriend was a fucking disaster. But they worked it out in the end and Thomas was happily ready to move on, and focus on the fact that Edwin wanted to be with him, even if their relationship wouldn’t involve sex, at least not on Thomas’ part.
It would be all peachy keen if it wasn’t for the fact that Edwin was so up in his head about everything that he kept worrying about overstepping.
Which was fucking annoying, because Thomas told him loud and clear that he would tell him if anything was wrong.
But it was all well!
They were snogging with the same enthusiasm - honestly, Thomas was feeling even better now that he knew that Edwin didn’t have any expectations from him. And what could a guy say, Thomas enjoyed touch, he liked feeling Edwin’s mouth on him, he liked tangling their legs together on the bed while they were enjoying an especially enthusiastic make out session. It was fucking great.
The part that was less great was when Edwin excused himself to go to the bathroom - but actually, no, that was great as well; Thomas was all in support of other people getting off. He was really big on sex, in general - just as long as it didn’t involve him directly.
Anyhow, yeah. The real problem was when his boyfriend came back.
Because one moment they would be snogging, hot and bothered, all good, and then Edwin went to have a wank and when he came back, he looked like the world’s most guilty dachshund that ripped your favourite cushions to shreds.
It was ridiculous.
Whenever that happened, Thomas wanted to loudly complain that his boyfriend was making things weird - but, what did Thomas know, really? He wasn’t catholic, he didn’t think that getting off was a guilty pleasure. What the fuck was guilt, anyway.
He would've left the matter alone and simply enjoyed all the rest of their relationship - but it was getting infuriating.
That was why he decided to intervene.
He hoped he wouldn’t overstep but, to be fair, he should be allowed at least one transgression, after that trainwreck that Edwin’s reaction to his coming out was.
One day he invited Edwin over and he made sure to keep as stern an expression as possible; it was a serious matter, after all, even if it made Thomas laugh to see how flustered Edwin could be while talking about sex.
He led his boyfriend to the small living room and gestured for him to sit in one of the armchairs. Edwin looked slightly alarmed and confused, and, honestly, yeah, he should be.
Thomas lowered himself on the armchair opposite his lover, touched his hand gently and gave him a serious look. “Edwin. You need to stop crying after sex.”
Edwin’s face was frozen for a few seconds - as if he was processing what he heard. Only then he grimaced, and as offended as he could, he asked “Excuse me?”
"Exactly, excuse you."
Edwin made note of the affectation in King's voice, if his bitchy eyebrow raise was anything to go by, and he was clearly expecting to hear more from Thomas.
And Thomas would deliver.
“Do you think I didn’t notice your face every time you come back from the bathroom after you excuse yourself? It’s like you think you’ve committed some criminal offence- Babe, you’re killing my boner with it, and I don’t even usually get one-”
There was a blank look on Payne’s face, and Thomas decided that maybe he should try to be more serious about the matter.
He let out an exhausted sigh and tried to start again.
He got up from his armchair and pulled Edwin to relocate to the couch with him. He thought he would give up on the dramatics, and hopefully keeping things casual was the way to go.
After pushing his boyfriend to sit on the opposite side of the couch, Thomas sat comfortably, facing Edwin. He noticed that there was an unconvinced expression on Payne’s face, as if he was expecting some more clownery from him.
Thomas put in a lot of effort to sound serious enough to get his point through, but also relaxed enough to not make Edwin tense right away. “Just because I'm not an active participant it doesn't mean you have to feel guilty about getting off every fucking time.” He bit his lips, wondering how to make his message simple enough to make his boyfriend take it seriously. "It's not healthy, Edwin, come on. You’ve got me worried."
Edwin’s face softened when he heard that King had some actual concerns, and- there it fucking was! That guilty face again. Jesus.
“It’s just… I keep feeling bad about it, like- like I'm transgressing," the man's voice was awkward as a furious blush crept up on his cheeks.
"Edwin. I told you, it is fine.” King shook his head, exasperated. “Hell, I literally told you to put me in your wank bank, yeah?” Edwin rolled his eyes at the expression. “So I really don’t have a problem with this. Honestly, would you be like that if we were having sex together?”
“Of course not, but this now is different-”
"No, it really isn’t!” Thomas interrupted with a groan. “Sweetheart, what is your deal? I told you-”
“I’m…” Payne’s eyes darted to the side, and he bit the inside of his cheek. “I’m worried that I’m being disrespectful, somehow.”
“Jesus fucking Christ,” King scrubbed his hands over his face and clawed on his cheeks. He had no idea how to get through his boyfriend's thick skull.
Or maybe… He had one idea.
“Okay, you know what, some people hate the food metaphors but fuck it, it's not getting through otherwise-” He took a deep inhale and then exhaled slowly, trying to appear collected.
Edwin arched his eyebrows at the theatrics.
"Look, Edwin - We went to that pizza place the other night, yeah?"
"Yes, we did. And what about it?"
"As pretty as you look and as lovely as you are most of the time, you have absolutely no taste, which, okay, pity, we can't all be me- "
A petulant huff escaped Payne’s mouth, and Thomas thought that he should try to piss off his lover on purpose just so he would keep up the attitude.
But maybe later; first, he actually had a point to make.
“You didn't have a problem with pineapple on my pizza, did you?”
Edwin frowned. “No. What does it have to-"
“But you didn't want to get it too, right?”
"God, no," the revulsion was on Edwin’s face immediately.
"Wow, a bit judgemental, thanks? No need to be so dramatic, seriously," Thomas rolled his eyes. “But I guess we're getting somewhere."
“Are we? I really don’t think food opinions are comparable to sex-”
"Ugh, Edwin, but for me they are! Why the fuck you're so weird about sex, Jesus-" Thomas took a breath to calm down. "Anyway, shut up and listen, okay?"
His boyfriend kept watching him with his lips tightened, as if he was stopping himself from interrupting again.
"Look, you're entitled to your food preferences, even if they're wrong," Thomas declared without batting an eye, and Edwin was looking as if he was trying to guess if he was trying to rile him up or was he actually thinking that (actually it was both). "And I saw your reaction then. I'm seeing it clearly now. So do you think I would try to force feed you pizza with pineapple?"
"I don't think you would do that."
"Great. But do you want me to feel guilty about eating the pizza? Especially when I'm not even doing it in front of you?"
"Oh don't be ridiculous, of course not-"
"Huzzah, now he understands it!" Thomas exclaimed with a mock enthusiasm, but it only made Edwin glare at him.
"I don't understand why you're being so patronising."
"Because you're being purposefully obtuse, babygirl! Like, Jesus fucking Christ, Edwin, I know Niko sees this stuff differently, but…" He sighed for the thousandth time, exasperated. Then he laughed incredulously. “I can’t believe I have to tell you this shit, but there isn’t one fixed way to be ace!”
Edwin kept glaring at him.
A loud groan escaped Thomas. “For fuck's sake, it’s like having queer 101 with you-"
"I really don’t think you need to be so mean."
"Actually, yes I do! Because tiptoeing around this isn’t getting us anywhere, and neither is-" guilttripping, he was about to say, when he was blessed with a new stupid idea, so he cut himself off.
Thomas crossed his arms over his chest, and looked at his boyfriend with all the sternness he could muster in this absurd moment. “Look, are you trying to make me feel guilty for not having sex with you?
“What?” Okay, maybe Thomas went too far because Edwin appeared genuinely hurt by the nonsensical accusation. “I’m not, I can’t believe you’re even asking that-”
“THEN I NEED YOU TO GET NORMAL ABOUT SEX! NOW!” Thomas ran his fingers through his hair; just a moment ago he thought he was frustrated, but now he was getting really exhausted. “Edwin, I mean it. I really don’t want you to feel bad about jerking off. Damn, I’m happy you can take care of yourself and you're not trying to make me do the work for you! So why can’t you take my words at face value?" Thomas looked at his boyfriend, to make sure that the man was listening.
Although King tried to be understanding about Edwin's doubts, and he got that Edwin was trying to be respectful, he couldn't help but perceive his reservation as condescension… And he decided to tell Edwin about it, too.
Thomas scoffed. "You don’t need to treat me like a kid just because I’m asexual. And I’d like it more if you weren’t second-guessing my own choices and decisions." He narrowed his eyes to give him a pointed look. "If I had any issues, I would tell you. Like I'm doing it right now."
After a few beats of silence, a pained grimace appeared on Edwin's face
"I feel like I keep mucking it up all the time," Payne complained with a sigh. At least now his words didn't have that self-pitying quality that was driving Thomas crazy, as if Edwin was feeling bad about as much as breathing in his direction. Now it seemed more self-aware.
Kudos for the insight.
“So just fucking ask! Or even better, believe my words!” It was hard to believe that this usually bright guy needed everything spelled out for him. “Seriously, if I knew you were being a dick, I wouldn’t put up with all that… but I guess I realise that you merely think with your dick, and then you overcompensate for it by trying too hard,” he said with a smile a bit too fake to be merely teasing.
Edwin winced, visibly displeased at the words, and he looked as if he would love to argue, but Thomas was getting tired of this conversation. Still, he didn’t want his boyfriend to sulk, so he lost the edge and nudged Edwin gently. “Come on, don’t be mad. I’m just trying to make sure we're good.
Payne pursed his lips, but at last, he nodded. "Very well then. You made your point."
"But did you get it?"
A tiny huff escaped Edwin's mouth. "Yes, I do believe I did."
"Great." Thomas smiled, and stretched out to kiss his boyfriend - just a quick press of their lips to reassure each other that things were good between them. When he pulled away, there was a smirk on his lips. "Oh, by the way, if we're gonna have this conversation again, I'll absolutely play the oppressed minority card.”
The words made Edwin snort. “Well, at least you’re being upfront about it.” He wrapped his arms around Thomas' waist to pull him in an embrace. “I appreciate that.”
