When we meet again

Summary:

Lance couldn't be happier for Keith than when he told Lance he was picked to go on the Garrison's Kerberos mission. Only a few months later, when it was announced that the mission had failed and all members were reported dead, Lance felt as if his world had ended. He didn't want to believe that his boyfriend was gone. So when Shiro showed up in an alien spacecraft, very much alive, Lance knew the garrison lied, and his boyfriend may still be out there. And he was going to find him, if it was the last thing he did.

Work Text:

Lance shot up from where he was lying on his bed, dropping his phone next to him as he turned to face his boyfriend. "You got selected to go on the Kerberos mission?"

Kieth grinned, his dark eyes sparkling. “Yup. Me, Shiro, Matt, and Professor Holt.”

“Oh my god, babe, that's incredible!” Lance stood up, crossing the room to where the older boy was sitting on his desk. He gently grabbed Keith's face and leaned in to kiss him.

Keith laughed softly, taking Lance's hands in his own. “I have you to thank for this. You're the one who helped me get my shit together.”

“You're not giving yourself enough credit,” Lance replied, brushing some of Keith's hair out of his face. “They could have picked any two students for this, and yet they picked Matt and you.”

Keith smiled, joy shining in his eyes.

“When do you leave?” Lance asked as he stepped away, dropping into the desk chair.

“In a few weeks. There are still a lot of things that need to be done before we can head off.”

“Then I will have to make sure to spend as much time with you, the most amazing boy in the world, before then.”

Keith laughed. “Only if you don't prioritize hanging out with me over your schoolwork. You can't let your grades drop if you wanna become a fighter pilot.”

“Yea yea yea,” Lance said, waving a hand at him. “I got it.”

Kieth smiled at his boyfriend before standing up and walking over to Lance, planning a kiss on his hair. “I'm going to bed. You should too.”

“Goodnight babe.” Lance replied with a smile, pulling him down to kiss his cheek before he walked away.

“Night sharpshooter.” Keith said as he disappeared into his room.

Lance watched him go, eyeing the homework that sat on his desk, previously forgotten. With a deep breath, he stood up. It was too late to start studying now. He stood up, stretching his arms behind his back before walking to his dresser. He yanked one of the drawers open, grabbed a clean pair of pajama pants, quickly changing into them, tossing his dirty clothing into a corner. He flicked the light switch on the wall, and the fairy lights Keith had hung on the walls blinked to light as Lance flopped onto his bed. Pulling the blankets over him, he shifted into a comfortable position before soon drifting into sleep.

~~~
Two weeks passed in the blink of an eye. Before Lance knew it, the day the Kerberos crew would depart had arrived. Lance was sitting on some steps, staring up at the ship while Keith stood to his side.
“You gonna miss me while I'm gone?” Keith asked, tilting his head to look down at his boyfriend.
Lance turned, pulled out of his thoughts by the question. A small smile spread across his face before he answered. “Duh. Why wouldn’t I?”
Keith stretched his arms behind his back, bending backwards slightly. “If only we could call each other while I'm gone. But rules are rules. We’ll just have to tell each other everything when I come home.”
“Yeah.”
Kieth turned to face the younger boy. “Hey, are you okay?”
Lance nodded. “Just thinking”
“‘Bout what?”
Lance pulled his knees up and hugged them. “How much I’m gonna miss you. You're like, my only friend. And what things are gonna change. They already reassigned my roommate. Some guy from Hawaii named Hunk. He’s starting after break.”
“Wow, that didn’t take long.”
“It's gonna be weird not having you as my roommate.”
Keith nodded. “Yeah, going from seeing each other every day to not seeing each other for over two years. That's gonna be a change.”
“Yeah.” Lance said with a nod.
Keith lowered himself to the ground, leaning against his shoulder. “Hey. It’s gonna be fine.”
Lance smiled a little. “I know. I’m just really gonna miss you.”
Turning to face his boyfriend, Keith gently rubbed a thumb across Lance's cheek before gently kissing him. “I’m gonna miss you too.”
“Keith!” Shiro called from where he was standing closer to the ship. “It's time to go.”
The boy groaned dramatically, dropping his head back. Standing up, he pushed his hair out of his face and held a hand to Lance, pulling him up.
“I’ll see you in two years?”
Lance smiled, wrapping his arms around Keith and hugging him tight. “Yeah.”
He wasn’t authorized to stay for the launch, so once Keith walked away, he turned and headed back inside, walking down the hallway to the dorms. It was weird seeing half the stuff missing, devoid of Keith's things. With a light sigh, Lance settled onto a corner of the couch, turning the TV on to the Garrison's stream of the launch.
