Work Text:
miku leaned against the window of the train, looking mindlessly out into the starry sky. her hands clenched into fists in her lap, remnants of the deep stress from today.
things had.. seemed to work out, between saki and the rest, now that she's revealed her feelings. still, it was.. nerve-wracking. but it was over, now. thank goodness.
she sighed, breath fogging up the cool window, and closed her eyes, hoping to let the rumbling of the train lull her into mindless sleep...
her eyes snapped open at the sound of someone walking across the train, a jolt of surprise dulling into relief at the sight of a pink-haired woman.
"luka. are you okay? it's pretty late.. you should be sleeping." miku mumbled, shifting slightly to face luka as the other woman sat down beside miku.
"hehe.. i'm fine. i wanted to make sure you were okay. it's late, you should be sleeping," luka echoed miku's own words back to her, sending her a soft, teasing smile. "still anxious from today?" miku hesitated before nodding. luka was always too perceptive to lie to.
luka stayed silent, only moving closer and looking out the window as well. miku tried to focus on the stars again, but the warmth of luka, the places where they were touching and the sparks that seemed to radiate from them, was much too distracting.
"you cold?" luka broke the silence, voice way closer than miku had expected warm breath tickling over her ear and clearly smiling.
"UH- uh, ahem.. s-sort of? weirdly cold on the train tonight, huh..?" miku coughed, trying to hide her flushing face.
it got a lot harder to hide her blush when luka wrapped her arms around the shorter woman, pulling her closer and basically onto her lap.
"is that a little better? it's easier to share body heat, right?" luka asked, one hand carding through miku's hair while the other was around miku's midsection, keeping her comfortably pushed against luka.
"ohghmhylkj" miku said, eloquently. luka chuckled at that, and miku could feel it rumbling in the taller woman's chest, a deep and soothing sound.
"the train really is calming.. i see why you sleep here sometimes," luka said in a low voice, just barely loud enough to reach miku's ears. miku tried her hardest not to be pathetic and in love over the way luka's voice deepened and got just a little bit rough. "it's lovely to see all the different stars.. almost as good as laying on the rooftop, mm?" as luka spoke, the hand in miku's hair drifted down to play with one of miku's hands, caressing it in a way that didn't really help miku stay normal about this whole situation. seriously. what the hell was happening.
"y-...yeah, it is.." miku spoke again, voice unsteady and wavering as she tried to contribute even a little to the conversation. "sometimes i like, uh, sitting and trying to find as many constellations as i can before the train leaves a stop."
"ooh, how fun~ maybe we'll play tonight. or perhaps we should just try to sleep.." luka hummed with a slightly amused tone. "goodness knows we need it after today."
miku slumped against luka, an involuntary sigh leaving her. "..feels awful we couldn't help much. i'm glad they sorted it out — they're strong, of course, and they love each other — but.. i wish we had been able to do something." she left out the part where she felt guilty over just standing and watching. it wasn't necessary.
"hm… you did everything you could, miku." of course, luka knows anyways. she has a habit of hearing the unspoken words when talking to miku. "you were there, you listened to each of them, and you supported them when they needed it most. some issues you won't be able to help much with.. but i know they all feel better knowing you'll always be there for them, miku."
miku didn't speak for a moment, letting luka's words sink in. she blinked back tears, childishly not wanting luka to see how much that had affected her, but all the stress and worry of the day was spilling out. luka didn't say anything, just squeezed miku and held the shorter girl as she quietly cried. a sign that miku wasn't alone.
a few minutes passed like this before miku stopped crying. subconsciously, one of her hands had moved up to clutch luka's hand, thumb rubbing over her hand self-soothingly.
"..sorry, luka.. didn't mean to do all of that so suddenly." miku mumbled, voice hitching with the remains of tears.
"no need to apologize, miku. i'm glad you had a chance to let it out. you can't bottle up your feelings, you know.. we just saw the consequences of that," luka lightheartedly chastised miku, squeezing her hand softly. "do you feel better?"
miku nodded silently against luka's chest, too tired to speak. luka laughed quietly, shifting a little to look at miku's face.
"you're sleepy, huh? lay down. i brought a blanket." luka gently pushed miku to a laying position, draping a blanket miku hadn't noticed over her with a truly terrifying fondness. miku tried to wonder how luka had planned ahead for this, but thoughts were more difficult to form when she was so close to sleep and there was a hand petting her hair soothingly.
"..goodnight, luka.." miku forced herself to whisper, eyes closing despite herself. "..lo'e you."
luka froze, one hand pulling the blanket further over miku, before she smiled ruefully. "..love you too, miku." after a moment, luka leaned down and pressed a kiss to miku's forehead, pushing some hair out of her face. "sleep well."
miku drifted off easily after that, calmed by the hand in her hair. luka stayed seated next to the blue-haired woman for a while, before pushing herself upright. she walked to the train door, casting one last look back at the peacefully-sleeping woman. luka couldn't help thinking miku truly was beautiful, lit by the moonlight and shining brighter than any of the stars in the sky above.
luka stepped off of the train, watching it chug away from the station until it was just a dot in the distance. even if it were far too late for any sleep now to be restful.. she didn't regret spending her night by miku's side. she leaned against a pillar and smiled, still remembering the warmth of miku pressed against her and the sleepy smile miku had given her. yes.. without a doubt, that was worth it.
