Itadori, Fushiguro, and Kugisaki had been at the carnival for a few hours now. Their first summer break as friends was one of the best any of them had ever had before, especially Yuji. He had always been a bit of a loner, his summer breaks usually spent watching television, sleeping, and playing some sport if he could muster a big enough group for it.
It was getting darker, the cheap speakers around the grounds cutting out slightly, though it was definitely clear they were talking about fireworks in ten minutes. The three were sitting down at a table underneath an unneeded shade. Megumi held a large, shared cotton candy stick, Nobara and Yuji taking more than three thirds of it together for sure, even though Megumi was the one who paid for it. He never really minded though.
“Hey, you guys!! We should go ride the Ferris wheel!” Yuji exclaimed, sounding just as hyped up as he did when they first got here. Megumi had no idea how he did that so often, he’d been dead on his feet for a few hours now, fully exhausted.
“Absolutely not!! Do you even know how rickety that thing is? What if it gets stuck?” Nobara snapped back.
“Seriously? You know it won't!”
“You don't know that!”
“Fine! Megumi, will you at least go with me?” Yuji asked, wrapping his arm around Megumi’s. Nobara looked at Megumi, a small smirk forming on her lips. Megumi told her about the weird feelings he felt around Yuji. He was only trying to identify it. When he settled on the fact he really did like Yuji, Nobara always teased him on the fact. Sure, she was a little mean, but she wasn't cruel. She would never tell, and Megumi respected her greatly for it. He still never had a day he didn't regret telling her, though.
“...Fine.” He replied quietly, gaze averted. The darkness of the swiftly approaching night hid the slightest taint of pink on his face.
“Great! I’ll go get us a spot in line.”
Megumi watched Yuji get up, walking to the Ferris wheel queue. Nobara was snickering, clearly finding the situation Megumi was in hilarious.
“Oh, shut up…!” Megumi whisper-shouted, not wanting to draw any attention, but needing his annoyance to get across to her.
“What! Its perfect, don't you think? Just like the movies, where the two love interests kiss under the fireworks at the top of the Ferris wheel.” She kept her voice down a little, but the god awful tone she always used made Megumi want to disappear. He should have declined Yuji’s offer at this point.
“No it is not! That's not gonna happen! Just shut up!” He always got defensive about this. The more she brought it up, the more she teased, the more frustrated and humiliated he got. He heard his phone buzz on the table, quickly picking it up. Yuji: hurry up it's starting !!
He looked back and Yuji, who was also looking at him, the two locking eyes perfectly even with the decent distance.
“Okay, gotta go.”
“Tell me how it goes.”
“Shut up.” Megumi grumbled, handing her the almost gone cotton candy stick.
Megumi joined Yuji in line, having to awkwardly ‘excuse me’ and slide past some people. Another announcement through those same cheap and poorly sounding speakers. Five minutes. As cheesy as it sounded, as embarrassed as he got by it, the movie scene thing didn't sound so bad.
The two got onto the Ferris wheel seat. It wasn't fully enclosed, though there was a back to it, basically no one behind them would see them. And that only made Megumi more nervous. He never got nervous, not like this.
Megumi checked his phone. They would start in 3 minutes. He tapped his fingers on his thigh, waiting for the Ferris wheel to actually begin. Yuji noticed.
“You scared, Fushiguro?” He said, turning to face him. “I mean, there's really nothing to be scared of. These rides aren't that dangerous.” A quiet, though very noticeable creak in the cart proved him wrong immediately. He awkwardly laughed.
Megumi stayed quiet, his mind still stuck on Nobara’s words. He looked to the side, both trying to avoid Yuji’s eyes and admiring the view of being so high up.
The Ferris wheel continued to ascend. One minute, Megumi thought to himself. They were the second stop at the top. He finally looked over at Yuji, knowing the fireworks were about to start any second now. He notices Yuji’s face, looking a little worried now.
For the first time that night, he actually smiled. Not just a small, unnoticeable grin, a real smile. But Yuji didn't see it, so it didn't count. He looked away, seeing the fireworks begin to start. It was suddenly cold, given the fact of it being later and then being so much higher up now.
He looked over at Yuji again, noticing how he shivered. He told him to wear more than a T-Shirt and shorts, but he never listened. He looked away for a moment, focusing on the fireworks in front of him. He suddenly felt something press against his side. His eyes widened slightly.
“...Itadori, what are you doing?” He sounded… not mad, just cautious. More than usual.
“Cold.” He replied, a short, quick word. Almost too quick.
Megumi nodded, his gaze going back to the fireworks. Itadori’s head was now on his shoulder, their hands brushed against each other's, but not holding.
As the Ferris wheel began to lower, moving them down from the top, Megumi was beginning to accept the fact Itadori was either too stupid and shy to take a hint and make a move, or didn't feel the same. And he was okay with that. As the ride fell to a stop, the fireworks still continuing, Yuji had moved away. The two stepped off the ride as it came to a halt at their turn.
“Dude, that was so boring! Tell me not to do that next time.” Yuji said, stretching as they walked around the booths of games they assumed Nobara would be at. After a few minutes they found her, including the few prizes she won. Surprisingly, she let the two pick something. Megumi picked the smallest one, and Yuji picked the largest one.
“Let's go home, I'm tired.” Nobara said, noticing Megumi’s expression. She couldn't tell if he had a huge weight off his shoulders or something exciting to say. Either way, she couldn't wait to hear about it.
The group found their way to the car, somehow convincing Yuji to drive. Megumi sat in the passenger seat at the front, Nobara behind Yuji in the back. Megumi was tired, his head resting against the window. He listened to the music Yuji played, glad it was something more relaxing than not.
The carnival was about twenty minutes away from their apartment complex. They all lived in the same building, though only Megumi and Yuji were next door to each other. Megumi drifted in and out of sleep, getting home quite fast, he felt Yuji shaking him awake, the fact of it being him waking him faster than it would if it were Nobara. He quickly opened the door, stepping out of the car. He stretched his limbs a little before he finally met Yuji at the front of it.
“Goodbye Kugisaki!!” Yuji yelled across the small parking lot, waving her away. From a distance, most people would think they were dating, but when you were inside the circle it was very obvious they weren't. Both swore up and down on it, and it was definitely… believable. Megumi always thought they seemed sibling-like. It was funny sometimes.
It was a little awkward now, just him and Yuji standing there in front of the car. Yuji had his hands in his pockets, swaying between balancing on his heels and his toes. Yuji cleared his throat, signaling to go up to their rooms.
Megumi’s mind was still on the Ferris wheel scene. Why did he do that? Sure, he was cold, but that was just… so weird coming from Yuji.
“Fushiguro.” Yuji’s voice almost made Megumi freeze up. It was so firm, so unlike Itadori.
“What?”
“Can I tell you something?”
“...Sure?” Megumi was very confused now. Yuji was being so strange. They were finally at their homes, again, right next to each other. Yuji looked around, trying to see if any one was around. Sure, it was dark, but it was still pretty early in the night, so it wasn't a low chance of people being out. He ultimately saw no one though. He leaned in slightly and just.. stared. Stared...? What was he doing?
It was awkward, and it made Megumi feel… uncomfortable? Not really. He wasn't sure. It was definitely a more positive feeling than uncomfortable, but he wasn't able to pinpoint it. They maintained Extended, almost longing eye contact, a hint of fear sown into their gazes. Yuji hesitated for a moment before carefully pulling Megumi in, capturing his lips perfectly. It caught Megumi so off guard, but he loved it so much.
He swiftly returned the kiss, trying to not go very far. The idea of making out was great, maybe just not in the hallway of their apartment that probably had cameras.
The kiss ended after a long moment, but it only felt like a second to both of them. Yuji quick stepped back a foot or so.
“...sorry. Just- just talk to me tomorrow.” He said, quietly retreating into his room. Megumi was left out there, standing in the hallways, trying to process what had just happened. He soon got over it. He knew that Yuji would probably act like nothing happened in the morning or act like the whole world ended. Either way, he knew that things would work out. He just knew it.
He pulled his phone out of his pocket, going inside his own home as well. He opened Nobara’s contact.
You're gonna wanna hear this, Kugisaki.
