Happy First Father's Day, Ilya!

Notes:

Work Text:

It was a lazy June Sunday afternoon. Shane shut the back door as quietly as he could, with his hands full of bags and boxes that he had been shopping for all morning. He had awkwardly juggled everything from the car to the house, finally setting the various items down with a sigh of relief. He quietly tiptoed to the hall just outside of the family room.
Just as he suspected, Ilya, still wearing his comfortable dark green pajama pants, was gently rocking Misha in the rocking chair, softly humming to him as he brushed his fingers through Misha's soft curly hair.

Making his way back to the kitchen, Shane prepared his items, placing them where he wanted them, then moving them around until they looked perfect. His final touch was the card placed exactly in the center of the table. Nodding his head in satisfaction, he tried to wipe the excited smile from his face and casually sauntered into the family room.
Ilya looked up as Shane entered the room. He held up one finger to his mouth and gestured to their infant son.

"Look at our little one. He's asleep. He's so perfect."

Shane leaned over to kiss Ilya before kissing Misha.
"He really is. He's adorable. I have a feeling he's going to look just like his papa when he grows up.

Ilya beamed. "We promised each other not to find out!"

Shane laughed softly, reaching out to hold Misha's hand in his.

When Ilya and Shane had decided on having children, they interviewed surrogates until they found one that would be willing to carry both children for them. The agreement was that both men would donate, and they didn't want to know whose sample had been used for which child. They just wanted children with both of their DNA
It was fairly evident as to whose DNA ended up in their firstborn, though. He had Ilya's nose and eyes, and his light blonde hair was already starting to curl and resemble spun gold.

"Let's put him to bed. I have something to show you in the kitchen."

"Shane. What did you buy for the kitchen?"

They walked quietly to Misha's room. Ilya passed the baby to Shane, who laid him down in his crib. Ilya adjusted the curtains and picked up the baby monitor to carry with them.

"Shane! What is all this?"

Ilya tried to take everything in at once. Shane had festooned the room with balloons bearing sayings such as Cool Pop, Best Dad Ever, and World's Best Dad; there was a cake that read Happy First Father's Day, two brightly wrapped gifts, and a card neatly centered on the table.

"Shane." Tears were shining in Ilya's eyes. "It is your first Father's Day too. I have nothing for you. In Russia, Father's Day is in October."

"It's okay." Shane encircled Ilya's waist from behind, resting his chin on Ilya's left shoulder. "Mom and Dad have something planned for us for tonight. I just wanted to make sure you knew how much Misha and I appreciate you, Papa."

"Ah, I cannot wait for our son to call me Papa and you..." Ilya hesitated.

"Probably DaDa to start, then Dad or Daddy. I don't care."

"It will be one of the best days for us." Ilya twisted in Shane's arms to face him. He placed a gentle kiss on his lips. "Ya tebya lyublyu. I am luckiest man alive."

"Open your gifts before you make me cry." Shane urged.

Ilya sat down on one of the kitchen chairs, pulling one out for Shane. He picked up the top gift and carefully pulled back the paper. His smile lit up his face. "I love it! I will wear it tonight!" He laid the T-shirt on the table and ran his fingers over the words.

"This Awesome Papa belongs to Misha". "Thank you, Shane."

Shane gently pushed the other gift towards Ilya. "You're not done."

Folding the paper back, Ilya opened the box to reveal the gift. Tears started running down his face. He picked it up and studied it before holding it to his chest. "Where did you get this?"

Shane smiled as he ran his fingers over Ilya’s cheek to brush away the tears. "Mom found it on her camera. She forgot she had it at the hospital when Misha was born.
The framed photo showed Ilya right after Misha was born. The nurse had just handed him the infant and had shown him how to hold Misha to bond with him. Ilya was gazing at their son intently, tears running down his face. Shane was leaning over his shoulder, a broad smile on his face as he held Misha's tiny hand.

"Moya semya, Shane. Our little family. Thank you. It's not enough, but thank you."

Tears overtook him again as Shane hugged him tightly. "Thank you, Ilya. I never imagined my life being like this."

"Happy Father's Day, Papa Ilya."

"Happy Father's Day Dada Shane."
