Work Text:
Ever since the start of their studies at UA High, Class 1-A had encountered unexpected peril time and time again, yet as hectic as their lives were, the calendar remained the same. Since the class was not allowed to leave the dorms without a good reason because of the recent increase in villain activity, they had to spend their summer mostly on campus.
Fanning herself, Jirou leaned back on the couch. It was around 8:00, and already she felt as if she was melting. She could normally sleep until ten or eleven, but because of her sweaty limbs sticking to the bedding Jirou failed to fall back asleep. Alone she was not, for nearly the entirety of Class 1-A was up as well.
"If only we could leave the dorms…" Mina sighed. "Then we could go to a pool or, better yet, the beach!"
Toru shook her head, or so Jirou assumed. It was not like she could see.
"I guess there's still the school pool… But that won't work. The other classes already have it reserved for the entire season…" she added.
The morning heat was already starting to drain everybody's energy. It was predicted to get way worse during noon though, meaning they had to come up with a plan, and fast. Meanwhile, a couple of other classmates had joined their discussion.
"There might still be a couple of fans in the storage room. Maybe we could stick 'em in?" Kirishima suggested, using his white headband to wipe the sweat off of his forehead.
"It's a reasonable idea," Iida responded, "but there's not enough fans to cover the entirety of the common room. It's a start, though."
Beside Jirou sat Kaminari, who used his hand to shield his eyes from the sun beaming in through the window.
"If only UA thought of installing some curtains here…" he muttered. "Say, do the air conditioners still work?"
Wordlessly, Sero got up from his chair and walked over to the nearest air conditioner, which was mounted on the wall. He pressed the button, turning the machine on.
"Yup."
As Sero moved on to turn on the rest of the units, another suggestion came forth.
"Maybe Yaoyorozu and I could make ice packs for everyone," Todoroki proposed.
"It's possible," Momo responded. "But… I'm afraid my body will overheat from all the strain I'd be putting on it…"
"I could cool you down with my ice."
"I'd rather not be an ice cube, as tempting as it sounds right now."
Jirou used the small towel she brought with her to wipe sweat off of her eyebrows. What irked her the most at the moment was actually her quirk. Since her earphone jacks were also flesh and skin, it produced sweat just like the rest of her body. It felt like her ears were leaking. Horrible.
In the corner of her eye, she caught sight of Kaminari wiping under his nose every few seconds. He'd forgotten to bring fabric to keep himself dry with, so he was forced to utilize his sweaty hand instead. His breathing sounded somewhat heavy compared to the rest of the class, likely because he sat directly in the sunlight. Just like the rest of their class, it was evident that Kaminari lost a good amount of sleep because of the ever rising heat.
"Hey," Jirou called, catching Kaminari's attention.
"Hm? What's up?"
"Here."
Kaminari's tired expression shifted to one of confusion when a towel landed in his hands. Jirou had brought two just in case one of them got soaked, but they proved useful for this scenario as well.
"Ah, thanks! Are you sure I can borrow, though?"
"Would I give it to you if I wasn't?"
"Fair enough."
"Just… Make sure you don't overheat."
"I won't, I won't. You do too."
As Kaminari began using the towel to wipe his sweat, Uraraka turned to Midoriya.
"Remember when we got some popsicles from the store, but the pack was way larger than we expected?"
"I do," Midoriya answered with a smile. "And if memory serves right…"
He got up from his seat and made his way over to the kitchen. Gripping the handle, Midoriya opened the freezer and slid the bottom drawer open to find the popsicles they saved. It had been in a massive pack, so there was more than enough to give each of their classmates at least one.
"There's a lot here!" he reported, grabbing the carton and shutting the fridge.
Everybody watched in awe as their classmate approached them. Several factors already helped keep them from suffering, but this… This was different. These small pieces of goodness were a lifeline, a light in the dark. Not only did it bring a much needed cold to the heat tormenting their exhausted bodies, but it also brought joy. It was feeble compared to the other precausions taken to fight the upcoming, scorching heat, yet it was a wonderful addition.
It gave Class 1-A hope… Popsicles.
Midoriya reached into the box and handed everyone present one while ensuring those absent would still be able to get it if they desired so.
Jirou felt relieved. It didn't solve much of the heat they were enduring, but it still was nice. A smile she didn't bother removing settled on her face as Class 1-A enjoyed their popsicles and being together.
"Eek!"
Jirou turned her head sideways to see Kaminari holding his head while quietly groaning. One glance at his popsicle told Jirou all she needed to know.
"You idiot," Jirou scolded, placing a hand on his back. "That's why you don't bite it off!"
The common room felt cooler with each passing minute. Kirishima, Tsu and Ojiro had gotten the fans out of the supply room and plugged them into the elecrical sockets. Cold air filled the room more and more, relieving the class from feeling like an oven meal.
Jirou, patting Kaminari's back, wondered what the future held for them. Happiness? Misfortune? Both? It didn't matter at that moment. They were here, right now. Whatever lay ahead could wait; Class 1-A was living in this moment, together with their companions, enjoying their summer to the fullest.
