I’ll Bring Him Over For Dinner.

Summary:

(First Fanfic so please bear with me)
Tsukishima Kei is definitely, absolutely, 100% NOT in love with his best friend Yamaguchi Tadashi.

Sure, he thinks about him constantly… maybe even think about how his smile makes his eyes crinkle up a bit. Sure, he wants to spend all his time with him. Okay SURE, he wants to MAYBE introduce Yamaguchi to his family over dinner.

But that’s beside the point!

Or: Tsukishima spends a whole lotta time losing in an argument with his own feelings.

Basically it goes: Tsukishima in denial, argument, accepts his feelings, invite him for dinner, THAT part, and comes back to him during the time skip!
Hope you enjoy!

Notes:

Yeo! This is my first ever fanfic on Ao3 so do not be hesitant to critic me or bullying me into posting! Feel free to express how you feel in the comments! -Appl_pii out!

By the way the first two chapters ARE a little fast paced but I promise I’ll make it a genuine slow burn afterwards!

Chapter Text

“I’ll Bring Him Over For Dinner.”

Chapter One.

(You can skip to the end of the canon scene)

*Hinata and Kageyama were practicing Hinata's ball control in what they assumed to be an empty park at night. Kageyama served at Hinata powerfully*

Just as Hinata was about to pass the ball back to Kageyama, Tsukishima caught it with one hand. Hinata, clearly confused and maybe a little pissed, looks up to find himself with a tall, blonde haired boy that has a shit-eating smirk plastered onto his face. Tsukishima chuckled to himself and brought the ball to his side.

Tsukishima:Wow. You’re really doing this outside?”

“Are you the first-years that stirred up trouble on the first day?”

Practicing almost late at night with t-shirts in cold weather had to be a whole different type of volleyball-obsessed. Looking down at the bright orange-haired boy, his eyes seemed to widen with both displeasure and curiosity.

Yamaguchi stood next to Tsukishima and giggled looking over at the two boys.

Yamaguchi: “Heh. T-shirts? Chilly.”

Bantering with the eccentric shortie and the egotistical “King Of The Court” wasn’t necessarily amusing but at least something to do to pass time.

Kageyama asked Tsukishima how tall he was with that constant glare on his face. Not surprising considering the fact that Tsukishima was towering over them, proudly even.

Yamaguchi: “Tsukki is 188cm. He’ll be 190 soon!”

It didn’t bother Tsukishima that Yamaguchi seemed prouder of Tsukishima's height than he was. He was even bragging about it. Tsukishima felt some sort of comfort in that, even if he didn’t want to admit it. Tsukishima scowled at Yamaguchi but there was no heat behind it.

Tsukishima: “What are you bragging about, Yamaguchi?”

Yamaguchi
: “Sorry, Tsukki!”

Without even realizing it, Tsukishima's eyes softened but only a bit. There was that voice again. Annoyingly familiar. He always apologized in that same gentle voice. It was annoyingly effective. Not that he cared or anything…

After calling Kageyama “King” one too many times, Kageyama grabbed Tsukishima's collar but then backed away with a suck of his teeth. His backing away only gave Tsukishima another way to further poke and prod at him with his past that flame hair over here didn’t know about yet.

Kageyama stayed quiet with unspoken annoyance and started walking away before Hinata decided to defend him. It reminded Tsukishima of Yamaguchi a bit. He can’t seem to put his finger on why though.

Even if getting the two students mad was Tsukishima's goal, they were getting a little too worked up over a simple sport.

Tsukishima: “Let’s not get so intense. Let’s do this cheerfully, for fun.”

“It’s only a club activity, after all.”

That seemed to hit a nerve.

Hinata
: “What do you mean only?!.”

Tsukishima
: “I mean, literally. See you later.”

He turns to leave. The banter was getting repetitive. Tsukishima nudged Yamaguchi to follow along. He was getting tired of disputing with two airheads who take volleyball way too seriously for his liking. It’s draining. I mean, who gets that offended over a sport? It was below him to wonder. A couple of steps into walking out of the park, the orange haired boy shouted:

Hinata: “Hey, stop! Who are you guys?”

Slowing down to answer, Tsukishima coolly said:

Tsukishima: “First-year, class four, Tsukishima Kei.”

And of course Yamaguchi follows up smugly with:

Yamaguchi: “I’m Yamaguchi Tadashi.”

Tsukishima
: “We're your teammates starting today. But enemies for now.”

“Looking forward to seeing the King's tosses.”

He flashed another one of his provoking smirks directly at Kageyama as he kept walking.

Yamaguchi: “Later!”

Tsukishima turned to leave again, walking a bit faster than usual. He doesn’t get upset easily but there’s something about those two that didn’t sit right with him. They were blaring, obnoxious, and just overall spontaneous (mainly Hinata). That’s everything he didn’t like summed up in two people.

Yamaguchi footsteps were heard from behind him.

Good. He should stay close.

Once Yamaguchi was almost walking next to him, he had a slight frown on his face. His eyebrows furrowed upwards and eyes slightly wide, leaning a bit towards Tsukishima before asking:

Yamaguchi: “Tsukki, wait up. Is something the matter?”

There’s that soft and kind-hearted tone he always used with Tsukishima. Yamaguchi always asked if there was something wrong. He was often right. Not that he would ever admit that. Tsukishima sighed and slowed down to match Yamaguchi's pace.

Tsukishima: “Guys that are intense for no reason get on my nerves. That King… and that Shrimp…”

Yamaguchi's look of concern deepened a bit while looking at him before looking forward. Still walking, he nudges his shoulder against Tsukishima's a bit as if to say “It’s fine”. Yamaguchi was never the type to lash out at Tsukishima. Never. He was always there to calm him down or just stay by his side quietly. Tsukishima has been with Yamaguchi long enough to know that Yamaguchi has picked up on his disdain towards loud people or noisy things in general.

Walking out of the park in silence, Tsukishima brings his hand slightly up to point at a convenience store that he was originally going to before heading back home.

Tsukishima: “Let's stop here to buy some snacks. My parents are out of town so that means there isn’t really dinner to eat.”

Without a second thought, Yamaguchi beamed and nodded.

Yamaguchi: “Okay, Tsukki! Want me to pay? What’re we buying?”

Tsukishima: “I’ll pay, Yamaguchi. Stop trying to be nice.”

“Chips, maybe some juice, and-“

Yamaguchi cut him off.

Yamaguchi: “Strawberry shortcake?”

Tsukishima nods. A slight smile formed at the corner of his lips when they entered the convenience store, grabbing a mini shopping basket at the entrance.

Strawberry shortcake was Tsukishima's all time favorite dessert and of course: only Yamaguchi knew.

Yamaguchi walked over to the snack aisle a bit bouncy and pointed at some chips. Tsukishima tailed behind him with the basket and stood close to him. Yamaguchi, asking over and over “this one? Or this one? These are good too..” It made him look like a giddy kid. Tsukishima didn’t mind his indecisiveness and slipped in the chips Yamaguchi liked in the basket quietly.

The basket got a bit heavy with straight junk food. One strawberry shortcake, Doritos, Pocari sweat, and two coca colas. Normally, Tsukishima wouldn’t eat this much junk food or junk food at all at this time of night… but tonight was a bit different. Tsukishima's parents and older brother were out of town for a family reunion while Tsukishima decided to stay back. He claimed it was for “practice” but he knew he didn’t care that much about the sport. The real reason was being able to invite Yamaguchi over to spend the night without any distractions.

Yamaguchi just happened to be free.

That’s all.

Now paying at the cash register, Yamaguchi takes the basket to place everything on the counter as Tsukishima gets his wallet out.

He simply paid and walked out with two bags of junk food. It doesn’t matter, it was the weekend now anyway.

Yamaguchi offered to hold one of the bags and Tsukishima let him. Walking side by side to Tsukishima's house, it was surprisingly hushed, even if it was night. No cars, no people outside, and only the sound of faint music coming from inside stores they were passing by on the sidewalk. It was… nice.

Yamaguchi: “Tsukki?”

Tsukishima hummed in response. He was subtly glancing at him from the corner of his eye, now a little more aware.

Yamaguchi: “What are we gonna watch when we get to your house? I know some good romance and horror movies!”

Tsukishima looked at him faintly and just shrugged. He didn’t mind movies as long as they weren’t overly sappy or maybe even too nerve-racking…but if Yamaguchi liked them, maybe he wouldn’t mind.

Tsukishima: “You can pick whatever. Just don’t let it be too cheesy or too scary.”

Yamaguchi nods and smiles like he always does.

Yamaguchi: “Then let’s watch the conjuring! I heard it’s really good! U-uh… why are you looking at me like that..?”

No.

Tsukishima scowled and stared at Yamaguchi. His eyes were somewhat wide as if to say “Seriously?” Even he has his limits. He catches himself being a bit too dramatic and just sighs.

Tsukishima: “You do know how scary that movie is, right? *another sigh* but if you think you can handle it without crying, go ahead.”

Yamaguchi snickered and lightly bumps shoulders with Tsukishima. His laugh was light and maybe a bit teasing.

Yamaguchi: “Tsukki, are you scared?!”

He laughed a bit harder when Tsukishima's nose crinkled up and cringed. He shook his head as if the very thought of him being scared from a movie offended him.

Tsukishima: “Are you stupid? No, I’m not scared and not going to be scared from a cliche horror movie like the conjuring… Fine! We’ll watch it but I’m not scared so don’t even ask.”

Great vocabulary Tsukki.

Tsukishima huffed and Yamaguchi's grin melted into a kinder smile as he nodded, his laughter dying down slowly as they kept walking. It was quiet but… a quiet that was comforting for Tsukishima. Although Tsukishima was slightly turned away, he wasn’t annoyed. The soft pink tinging his ears and cheeks weren’t something Yamaguchi should get to see.

He was a little scared… only a little. Maybe a little more than a little! Well he did say he doesn’t want to watch a movie too scary but what can he do now?

His internal thoughts were interrupted by Yamaguchi's voice. Of course it was Yamaguchi to do so. Tsukishima hated how easy it was to recognize his voice. That same tone that always brought him back to reality.

Yamaguchi: “Sorry, Tsukki!”

Tsukishima rolled his eyes.

He was definitely not looking forward to spending the entire night with Yamaguchi.

Definitely not.
