Work Text:

Kris' eyelashes flutter as they blink slowly — open, closed, open again — at the beating, pink heart bubble atop the head of Susie's mii.

When the island had first been made, they hadn't intended to add anyone they actually knew in real life. It was supposed to be an amalgamation of random fictional characters that they and Susie shared a deep interest in, in addition to a bunch of random creaturesque things to spice the drama up.

But then, after handing their switch over to Susie for her to supposedly make 'Long spongebob squarepants', they'd been given the gift of a Susie mii.

Their heart rate had picked up in response to it, their chest going all tight when they'd seen her smile as they gave her a, quite frankly, hideous outfit. And from then on, things had just gone further downhill as they caught themself making other friends or members of their family.

They worry their bottom lip between their teeth as they kick their legs back and forth, eyes still zoned in against their switch. Some part of them wants to just— exit out of the game. To just restart this day's progress over fresh, erasing the brand new outfit they'd gifted to Asriel and the slice of cherry pie they'd shoved down their own mii's throat. Because, like, what do they do?

If Susie's mii has a crush on them, should they let her keep it? If Susie's mii has a crush on someone else, would it be wrong to turn her down? If she doesn't have one on them, should they just scrap it all and start again?

With shaking hands, they circle the left joystick of their nintendo switch, angling it downwards towards the bubble after allowing it to circle up, down and all over Susie's room for a couple minutes. They slam their eyelids completely shut, their heart beating heavy in their chest, and keep one ear open for any lines of dialogue.

It's quiet. Their breath catches in the back of their throat, and they crack one eye open to check for what's happening on screen.

.. They'd forgotten to press the 'A' button.

Their right hand raises towards the buttons of the joycon, running over all four options, before falling softly over the 'A'. But there's some kind of barrier there; something in their head that prevents them from slamming down against it without a second thought. They huff, closing their cracked-open eye again, and go for it.

Susie's mii is eerily silent for a couple seconds. They're painstaking — like driving a knife into their chest, without the actual harm of an actual knife in their flesh. Then, in due time, they hear a robotic lecture crawl from their switch's speakers, and it's like the world just.. pauses.

They can't hear the fan in their bedroom anymore, and the breeze from through the window doesn't tingle against their skin. The scent of their mother's home cooking no longer irritates their nostrils, and—

"I think I have a crush on Kris."

Their heart almost stops.

"Do you think we'd make a good couple?"

They barely get to register the request before their eyes are wide open again, their cheeks flushed as they flick between the response options. 'Yes! Go for it!' feels so tauntingly bright, whilst 'Not really..' feels like it's making a mockery of them.

They flick between them for an irritatingly long moment, before eventually deciding to close their eyes again and leave it up to fate. They flick their joystick back and forth a couple more times, then press the 'A' button against whichever one it landed on.

Their stomach feels heavy as they await the response — the probable rejection, not helped whatsoever by the stupidity of their avoidance. Their fingers run down the smooth plastic of their controllers, their lip now bruised from the excess battering they'd been giving it.

Then, raised above the silence — "You don't think it's a good idea?"

Their heart sinks, the joy from earlier swiftly dragged through the mud and replaced.

They blink rapidly at their screen for a moment, whatever else it is that Susie says fading into the background, before scoffing under their breath and turning on their side. The Nintendo switch remains tightly encased in their palms, but they can barely even bring themself to look at it.

.. This is stupid.

That was the decision they'd made — to let fate decide for them, to take it out of their hands. And now they were mad because their plan had fallen through? What were they, stupid or something?

They grimace. Now that they think of it, that— Yeah, that kinda was stupid. If they wanted theirs and Susie's miis to fall in love they should have just let her!

A grumble bubbles in the back of their throat and rolls out of their lips, and for a brief moment they consider freeing their grasp on their switch and hurling it as far as possible across the room. If they've any luck, it'll crash and break onto the floor.

But instead, they choose to exit out of Susie's house, not wanting to look at her any longer, and instead pick up their own mii. They toss them back and forth, keeping their head grasped tight within their virtual, all-seeing hand, before flicking them in some random direction.

Completely unintentionally, Kris' mii ends up planted flat on the floor in front of Susie's mii. They tumble, look kinda stupid for a moment as they wince in pain, before staring up at her. Suddenly, three, straight, yellow lines form above their head.

Their eyes widen as they click onto the interaction, hope bubbling in the bottom of their stomach and spreading out across their chest as they watch it play out. It's probably the most they've actually stared at the screen across the last couple minutes, as opposed to cowardly tightening their eyes shut.

Their mii has a short, sweet interaction with Susie. They have a conversation about one of their stupid pieces of island lingo — something about 'kissing the bros goodnight', or whatever, before the interaction comes to a swift end.

The hope building inside Kris' body fizzles out, leaving them with a rather dejected expression as each of their miis friendship levels rise. But then, just like they'd prayed, the cutscene doesn't stop.

Susie's mii turns her back, but Kris' eyes don't drift away from her. A whirlwind of pink lighting and hearts and soft, ambient music crash in all at once, and Kris suddenly knows they've won.

Their mii begins to blush, pushing their hands upwards to stand still at their chest. They blink rapidly from within the confines of their tiny little screen, and when the words, "I think I've got feelings from Susie," play out of their switch's speakers, they almost punch a fist up into the air with glee.

Thank you, to whichever God is out there and keeping an eye on them — no matter how little they may believe in you.
