all I can see is you

Summary:

So Kim Seungmin loved his family, maybe would go as far as say that he adored them and the little peace they'd created for themselves. And he absolutely loved just observing that peace, smiling a little dumbly at the two people who meant the world to him, even if it meant that Minho would send him wry smiles with an eyebrow raised when he caught him.

But what was even more endearing was that the more he observed, the more he noticed a pattern, little things that Yu would do that just screamed Minho to Seungmin, who had been married long enough to the older man to recognise his little habits and influence on their son. It was honestly adorable (and definitely hadn't led to a little cry at how he was their son, like they had raised him, and now he was like a mini Minho and if that wasn't just the cutest thing ever, Seungmin didn't know what was).

Or, five small moments where Seungmin notices their son, Yu, is a lot like his father, Minho, and the one time Yu is like him

Work Text:

Kim Seungmin loved his little family. The one he and Minho had fought so hard for, even from the beginning of their relationship, just so that they could be themselves, together.

He really felt like everything fit into place after he met Minho. He had always said he didn't believe in soulmates, and he still didn't, that kind of thing was more suited to Minho and Jisung anyway, but he couldn't deny how right everything felt after Minho. They just worked, they understood each other perfectly, in a way that didn't need words. And even if they had some bumps in the road as they went, predominantly from his side of the family that had not been happy that he had a male partner and the crying sessions that followed after they cut him off, they still pushed through. It admittedly took Seungmin a little time to accept that just because some people were too narrow minded to ever understand, didn't mean he couldn't live how he wanted. But Minho had been by his side the whole time, always there to pick him up out of his vicious spiralling. Always happy to fight for him and Seungmin knew he'd drop everything to do the same for him too. Because they were devoted to each other, in their own special way. He had never been happier than on their wedding day. Except for maybe one day.

Because everything truly became perfect after they adopted Yu. Their darling baby boy. Not that he would appreciate them calling him that anymore at his 'big teen age'.

Seungmin was truly proud of how far they'd all come, and he knew there would most definitely continue to be things that stood in their way, but he knew that as long as they had each other, they would power through, because that was who they were.

But then Seungmin soon found that he couldn't stop himself from noticing it. Not that he was complaining, he absolutely loved it, felt like he was only falling head first more in love with his silly little family as he watched them.

.・。.・゜✭・.・✫・゜・。.

The first time he noticed it, it wasn't even anything big. It was at their weekly weekend movie night as a family.

As tradition demanded he was quick to change into his fluffy pochacco pyjamas, pairing them with some silly cat paw fluffy socks that Minho had been way too excited over when he bought them, but at least they made him happy. He wriggled his toes a little, huffing a soft laugh at the way it made the little paws on the socks wiggle, before making his way downstairs, knowing he'd find both Minho and Yu already waiting for him.

And as he predicted, they were both sitting there on the sofa, in their matching sets of fluffy sanrio pyjamas, kuromi for Minho and chococat for Yu, cuddled up with Dori and Doongie, Soonie lounging like the king of the house on the back rest. Seungmin smiled, happy that the whole family was already gathered, then made a move to head to the kitchen, ready to make his usual hot chocolate before he would join them.

"Kim Seungmin. Sit down."

"Wait, but I–"

"Papa. Sit down."

Seungmin looked over, making eye contact with a smirking Minho, who was clearly amused by their son's antics. He slowly made his way over to the free spot on the sofa, making a point as he dragged his feet a little, before flopping down next to Yu, draping some of the blanket over his legs.

He was surprised, then, by Yu who leaned over to very casually hand him an already made hot chocolate, in his favourite mug and when he looked down to check, yep, those were the exact amount of marshmallows he liked to add in it too. Even when he took a tentative sip of it, it was amazing. It was a perfectly made hot chocolate, exactly to his standard.

He shot Minho a look, narrowing his eyes playfully and wiggling his eyebrows, silently trying to tell him 'ha! Caught you! You made me a perfect hot chocolate exactly the way I like it because you love me' with just his face.

He watched as Minho's eyes widened, head shaking a little from side to side as a look of innocence crossed his face and his raised his hands a little.

Seungmin's expression flattened, unimpressed, as he raised an eyebrow at his husband.

A small frown made it's way across Minho's face as he shook his head a little more insistently, gesturing a little with his eyes towards Yu.

Seungmin paused, tilting his head slightly to the side in question.

"You're going to miss the start of the movie if you both keep making eyes at each other."

Minho spluttered a little as Seungmin choked a little, huffing a breath, "yah! We were not 'making eyes at each other!'"

"Yeah, I will have you know that I was actually trying to explode him with my mind."

"'Course you were, Appa…" Yu sent a very unimpressed look to both of them, stroking Doongie who had moved onto his lap. Seungmin noticed that there was a little bit of a flush on his face, immediately causing him to connect the dots. Yu had made him the absolutely perfect hot chocolate. It was then that he had the thought, how similar their son was to his appa, always watching for small things that would make someone else happy without outright admitting to them. Then the sound of the beginning of the film started to fill the room, causing Yu to gasp, quickly turning to stare determinedly at the screen. "Now come on! Focus, it's starting!"

Seungmin let out a little chuckle, amused, sending a quick glance over at Minho who had a similar expression on his face, sending Seungmin a short look that definitely was supposed to say 'I told you so' before they both moved to snuggle under the blanket, settling in for the evening together.

 .・。.・゜✭・.・✫・゜・。.

The next time Seungmin noticed was definitely… Bigger than the first time.

They had decided to go out one evening, when Seungmin and Minho found a time that coincided with both of their quite chaotic work schedules, to a nice restaurant they'd all had their eyes on for a little while.

And it had been a really nice outing to start with. They'd all semi dressed up, trying to make it feel special even if it was just a random regular evening in reality. They'd quickly been shown to their table, Yu had immediately been very excited by all the different food options they had on the menu and he ended up spending quite a bit of time, much to both his fathers' amusement, carefully attempting to pick out what it was that he wanted to try the most. Eventually they all got around to ordering their food, Minho even offered to pick for Yu at some point, but they got there in the end.

It was then, as they were settled, happily talking amongst themselves as they waited for the food that he had heard it.

There was a family sitting not too far away from them, the mother trying to keep her daughter entertained as the father swilled a cup of wine next to them.

The daughter had looked up, noticing them sitting not too far from them, pointed, as children tend to do, before not so subtly asking her mother, "where's that boy's eomma?"

Seungmin froze a little, looking up at Minho and Yu who thankfully hadn't noticed the little girl pointing right at them. He could hear the mother startle, spluttering a little, clearly unsure as to what to say as she stared at them, a judging streak in her eyes, before the father scoffed. Loudly. Seungmin barely had time to brace himself for what the more than slightly tipsy man would say next.

"Don't look at them, Da-hee. It's utterly disgusting."

The little girl just seemed confused, "why?"

"Such an affront to what is natural. We wouldn't want them spreading their disease to you."

Seungmin could hear him continue in his rant, using some horribly colourful words in front of his young daughter, who just looked increasingly horrified at the response to what had been a somewhat innocent, if not uneducated, question.

He took a steadying breath, ready to suggest they instead actually go somewhere else, maybe just take the food they ordered home and eat it there instead, but he looked up to see two twin faces that were clearly fighting to stay neutral.

Minho had an expression that to anyone else could have seemed unbothered, but Seungmin knew his husband, could see the ire burning behind his eyes, how it was only one hair away from exploding right in front of them. Yu's face had similarly fallen completely blank, but once again Seungmin felt like he could feel the murder in his eyes. They looked like two feral cats, staring unblinking at a threat, waiting for the right moment to attack.

Seungmin cleared his throat, desperately trying to break their death stares with this other family, "maybe we should leave…"

He succeeded in his goal to some extent as both Yu and Minho's heads snapped towards him. Immediately there was outrage from both of them, hissing out words to Seungmin while sending glares to the table next to them.

"Leave? Why should we leave–"

"–We haven't even done anything! They're the ones being so fucking rude–"

"–We're just enjoying our dinner and he's being a homophobic piece of shit–"

"–How dare they talk about us like that–"

"–If anything they're the ones that should leave."

Seungmin sighed, feeling his chest tighten a little, he probably would have been amused by the display if not for the reason for it in the first place. The way they reacted in exactly the same way as each other, the red hot fire of anger burning in the same way within both of them, neither hesitating to stand up for themselves and the ones they loved. He watched as their server started to approach them, their food in her hand, looking a little awkward while Yu and Minho were still spitting insults to the family opposite them under their breaths. Seungmin just put on a strained smile, accepted the food as the server put it down, feeling a little bad for her.

Thankfully for him, the sight of food was enough to interrupt the impromptu insult session, both Yu and Minho stopping each of their tirades to dig into their much awaited food.

Seungmin hesitated though, feeling a little like their night had been ruined a little by the whole debacle. His appetite had depleted a little and he could still feel the angry stares of the other family burning on his back. He tensed even more when he saw the more than tipsy man call over the server that had just served them, glaring at them as he started to whisper to her.

"Yeobo."

At the sound of his husband's soft voice, and the pet name that was rare to hear in Minho's dulcet tone, Seungmin whipped his head around to look at him from his spot at his side. He had a knowing look in his eyes, like he could see through Seungmin completely, in fact he wouldn't be surprised if that was the case with the way he always seemed to practically read his mind. Then a soft smile spread across his face, he gently put a reassuring hand on Seungmin's thigh, before he gestured his head to the table opposite them.

When Seungmin looked over he could see the server vehemently denying whatever the man was asking about, abruptly shaking her head, a deep frown present on her face as she responded calmly to him every time he spoke to her. The man clearly was not happy with this response as he started gesturing towards their table violently and raising his voice, drawing the attention of the rest of the patrons in the restaurant.

Eventually, another worker from the restaurant came over to the table, also talking to the man calmly but with a frown on his face. The man, outraged at not getting his way, stood up suddenly and dragged his wife and daughter away, sending their table dirty looks before they left the restaurant altogether.

Minho gently squeezed Seungmin's thigh under the table, moving to whisper softly in his ear, "see it's all been dealt with. Get out of your head a little, puppy, nothings been ruined. We're okay. Let's just try to enjoy the rest of the evening, yeah?"

Seungmin nodded, looking over at Yu as he happily ate his food, who looked up at his father mid-bite, smiling brightly. Seungmin felt the tightness in his chest release a little, the tension leaving his body slowly. Minho was right, he didn't need to preoccupy space in his head for someone's harmful bigotry, not when this time was reserved for his family. His family who were both watching him, twin soft smiles on their faces with hints of concern in their eyes.

Seungmin let a genuine smile spread across his face as he joined them in eating their food, thoughts of any negativity pushed to the side for the rest of the evening.

.・。.・゜✭・.・✫・゜・。.

Once the thought got stuck in his head, he felt like he couldn't stop noticing it, couldn't stop mentally cooing over how similar his husband and his son were, even if just in the smallest little ways.

One day, Seungmin had been on a walk with Yu, both on their way back from grocery shopping, when, as they walked past an alley by their apartment, there came a pitiful meow.

Yu immediately stopped, holding out the plastic bags in his hand to Seungmin, "Papa, could you hold these for me please?"

Seungmin huffed a breath, making a show of playfully rolling his eyes, even though he was pretty sure that Yu was no longer paying attention to him, and took the bags offered to him, fiddling around so that all the bags fit in his hands without digging too much into his palms.

When he turned around to face Yu, he was only somewhat surprised to find that he'd already amassed a little group of stray kittens all vying for his attention and sniffing his pockets as he crouched down. Seungmin felt his heart melt at the sight in front of him, he probably would have tried to take a photo for Minho if he hands weren't currently busy with the bags.

But it was only when Yu pulled out a tube of churu from his pocket that the image of a mini Minho really seared into his brain.

He huffed out a surprised laugh, "do you always carry a spare churu around with you?"

Yu, not glancing away from the kittens for a single second, nodded, "of course, it's always important to have some on you, just in case. You never know when you'll come across a cat," he said, his voice completely serious.

Seungmin's heart was going to explode out of his chest from the cuteness aggression suddenly coursing through his veins. If it wouldn't have been thoroughly embarrassing he probably would have started crying right then and there becuase Minho did that all the time. It was such a Minho thing to do and here was Yu cuddling the tiniest kittens Seungmin had ever seen, a look of pure joy on his face, giggling as he fed them the treat. Seungmin was going to evaporate from the intensity of the emotions flowing through him at that moment.

The kittens eventually got bored once there was no treats left, giving some small licks to Yu's fingers before they were stumbling back down the alley, and not a moment too soon as well, Seungmin was starting to lose the feeling in some of his fingers (not that he was going to be the one to interrupt Yu with the cats).

Yu stood, turning to Seungmin and taking his bags back. He looked up at his father, his eyes a little narrowed at the (undoubtedly incredibly fond and gushy) expression on his face, "what?"

"What?"

"You've got a weird look on your face, Papa."

"No I don't," Seungmin turned and started walking in the direction of their apartment, "come on, your Appa will be waiting for us by now."

He didn't need to turn around to know that Yu probably had a smirk on his face as he followed after him, he'd probably get teased by Minho when he told him what happened too, but he couldn't find it within himself to care, his love for his family flowing through him happily.

.・。.・゜✭・.・✫・゜・。.

The next time he has the thought, as he'd started dubbing it in his head, was once again at another family dinner, although this one was just the three of them in their apartment, a meal that Minho had cooked in front of them.

Yu was telling them about his day at school and somehow they'd got onto the topic of one of his newer friends, So Geon. And then he just kept on talking about Geon, getting increasingly excited as he went through every detail he could think of, retelling funny stories about him and laughing at jokes he told him earlier in the day. Seungmin didn't think he could ever remember a time where Yu practically gushed about another person in the way he was over Geon, the spark that seemed to light in his eye as he continued on and on.

He was so sucked into his own stories about the other boy that he kept on getting distracted from his food, which was an uncommon occurrence for him, both Minho and Seungmin kept having to nudge him to continue eating before it got too cold. And even when he was eating he seemed to keep trying to talk, Seungmin had half a mind to be worried that he might choke as he went.

Seungmin looked to make eye contact with Minho, who looked very amused, a smirk on his face between his own bites of food. He wiggled his eyebrows at Seungmin, looking like he was trying very valiantly not to burst into laughter. He cleared his throat before turning back to their son, "sounds like you have a crush on this boy, aegi."

That immediately shut Yu up, frozen as he stared up at them both, a deep flush spreading out across his face as he continued to just sit there in shock.

"I– No–" he let out a huffed, short laugh, like he couldn't believe what he was hearing, "it's not a crush!"

Seungmin had to try very hard not to laugh abruptly at the constipated look on Yu's face, when he looked over at his husband, he saw he was also in a very similar predicament.

"No, seriously! Why would I have a crush on him? He's such a puppy, you both know that I much prefer cats, and he's so excitable and clingy. No! I don't– I've never even thought about him like that! That's so stupid! Why– Why would you even think that? He's just a friend, a new one at that! I'm just excited to have met him, that's all!"

As Yu continued trying to come up with believable excuses and reasons why he "definitely didn't like Geonie like that", Seungmin couldn't help but think that this practically tsundere reaction of his reminded him very much of someone else. He turned his head to smirk at Minho, nudging his foot teasingly under the table.

His husband caught the look and also immediately froze, his eyes narrowing as a scowl took over his face.

Yu was having almost an exact reenactment of the reaction their friends had always told him that Minho had had whenever someone asked if he liked Seungmin. And even thinking back to when they first got together, when Seungmin had confessed to him, Minho had tried ever so hard to be nonchalant about the whole thing, as if he had been doing Seungmin a favour by going out with him in their university years. At the time, Seungmin had thought it had been genuine, that he had to work hard to deserve to be with someone like Minho, but after all these years he knew better, he recognised it for what it really was.

And here Yu was doing the exact same thing. Seungmin knew it and Minho knew it too, from the way his ears were turning as red as Yu's and was completely avoiding eye contact with Seungmin.

"No, seriously, it's really not at all like that, Papa."

Seungmin continued to smile knowingly at his husband, slipping his hand onto his thigh and squeezing slightly as Minho continued to try and hide himself in his suddenly very interesting food, "sure it's not, Yu, whatever you say."

.・。.・゜✭・.・✫・゜・。.

Seungmin had for once finished earlier at work than either Minho or Yu, allowing him to go home early, taking some time to just snuggle with the cats on his own as he tried to get some work done before he needed to pick them both up from Minho's dance studio.

Yu was always the one who finished his school day first, so he would head over to Minho's dance studio after school, which was not too far away. Seungmin, as the one who tended to finish the latest, never really knew what they got up to there, he sort of left it as bonding time between the two of them. Not that they necessarily needed bonding time, since they always seemed to team up to tease Seungmin whenever they could. But even so.

But today Seungmin had only had a half day at work, so had taken the opportunity to drop Minho off at the studio, meaning he would also need to go pick him up lest he be stuck on the bus. Which wouldn't be an issue, but Seungmin would have to deal with both Minho and Yu's whining about how he couldn't be bothered to go get them and didn't he love them? He did, very much, but not enough to live with their complaining on his one so far good, free day.

He took the time when driving over to the studio to bask in the peace a little before he was joined by the chaotic loves of his life.

When he arrived, he had half expected for them to be waiting for him, whining about how he took forever to come over, even though he had been very careful to time when he left so that he'd arrive half an hour after Minho's last class ended. But there was no one, so he parked the car and made his way inside.

He hadn't been in Minho's dance studio for quite a while now, but he thankfully still remembered his way around, waving to Yeji as he walked past her at the front desk.

When he made his way to the room Seungmin knew Minho used for the majority of his classes, though, he stopped. Through the window of the door he could see both his husband and his son dancing together, both their gazes focused on the mirrors in front of them. Every now and then Minho would stop them, going through a move slowly with Yu, making sure he completely understood it before they would move on and the cycle would continue.

Eventually they stopped, taking a small break, Minho saying something before giving Yu a high five and sneaking his hand round to ruffle his hair when he wasn't looking, causing him to bat his hand away, a disgruntled look on his face.

Then they started up again, going through the entire choreography together with music that Seungmin could faintly hear through the wall. Seungmin was stunned. He of course knew his husband was a brilliant dancer, and both he and Minho had been over the moon when Yu had mentioned wanting to start too, but to see the proof of both of their hard work right in front of him was a different matter altogether.

They were both amazing, their moves perfectly in time with one another, confidence oozing off of them. Seungmin felt like he couldn't breathe, pride building up in his chest to the point of overflowing. His beautiful husband who adored to dance, who had cried in Seungmin's arms when he didn't pass the auditions to dance groups in university, who had decided to become an even better dancer despite that. And his son, who looked at Minho with such awe as they danced, who had the advantage of youth and flexibility and had grown to be almost as his good as his father in such little time. Who was so like Minho in so many ways. They were absolutely stunning. His two dancers.

Before he could get too misty eyed and emotional about the whole thing, the music came to an end, as did the dancing from the two inside the room. As they both picked up their water bottles, taking big gulps as they caught their breaths, Seungmin knocked gently on the door and entered.

Minho looked a little surprised to see him standing there, while Yu just let out an overjoyed "Papa!"

"What are you doing here, Kim Seungmin? We would have been happy to take the bus."

Seungmin let his expression fall flat, rolling his eyes as he responded, "yeah right, yeobo. Now are you ready to go?"

Minho smirked before nodding, turning to pick up his things, Yu quickly doing the same before excitedly making his way over to Seungmin, chatting away happily about his day as they made their way over to the car. Seungmin smiling and nodding along with what he was saying as Minho threaded their fingers together, insisting he be the one to drive since Seungmin had played taxi for them all day. Seungmin huffed a laugh letting them both do whatever they wanted as they made their way to their home.

.・。.・゜✭・.・✫・゜・。.

Seungmin may have thought he was subtle in his little observations, but Minho saw through him. Had done so for the longest time, since they'd met all those years ago in university. Observing from afar had always been his thing and he saw those disgustingly fond looks Seungmin was trying to be sly about. Minho saw the similarities Seungmin was seeing himself and drawing between him and their son. What Seungmin didn't see was what Minho saw, which was the way Yu was similar to him too.

Especially in a moment like now.

After months of Yu coming home from school and going on and on about his crush (that definitely wasn't a crush), Geon, they'd finally invited him over. And Yu was buzzing happily about it as soon as it had all been decided a week ago, except now the day had actually arrived and it was a couple of hours before Geon was set to arrive, Yu was buzzing in panic.

He'd gone over every corner of the house making sure it was all clean and collected in the way he deemed presentable, had made a list of foods that were apparently Geon's favourites and, when he worried that Minho would still get the wrong ones, just ended up going to get them himself. He was being extremely nit picky about everything, down to how the cushions were placed, which seemed excessive, surely Geon wouldn't notice that, Minho had thought as he witnessed Yu's stress culminating in him picking pillows up just to put them back down exactly where they had been before.

Seungmin and Minho had been told to stay at the kitchen island, no longer allowed to touch anything as apparently they hadn't been meeting Yu's standards and he just had to do it himself instead. As they continued to watch, listening to Yu go over for the fifth time his itemised list of what he and Geon would do when he arrived, Minho couldn't help but poke Seungmin, an eyebrow raised in amusement.

No matter how much Seungmin tried to deny it, this behaviour of Yu's was just so Seungmin like that Minho couldn't stop the chuckle that he let out as Yu went rushing from one room to another. Seungmin had done exactly this the entire time they'd dated, everything always having to be perfect, always in the order he'd created in his head, for whatever occasion, whether that was meeting Minho's parents or inviting their friends over for a party after they moved into their new apartment. He'd even acted this way as they prepared for their wedding, all the way up until their wedding day, and don't even get Minho started on the day they'd adopted Yu. Seungmin had gone into a full blown panic mode, even though they'd been preparing for months, he was somehow convinced they'd forgotten some tiny thing that would cause Yu to hate them forever. Minho liked to laugh about it now, but he couldn't deny that he had been in a similar state of panic that day too.

Seungmin turned to look at Minho, his expression immediately souring at the teasing look on Minho's face, "don't say it."

"Puppy, look," Minho crooned.

"Please."

"He's just like you, jagiya."

Seungmin sighed, head falling down to the island in front of them, he whined, muffled, "am I this bad?"

"Aw, Seungminnie," Minho ran his hand through his hair, playing with the ends of it, he'd need to get a haircut soon, "you're worse, baby."

Seungmin grumbled, although Minho could see the exasperated smile on his face even as he tried to hide it in his arms.

Of course, when Geon actually arrived in their apartment everything was different. Yu was suddenly a lot calmer, all bright smiles, a light pink colouring his face as they talked excitedly together, rushing to Yu's room.

Minho and Seungmin laughed in amusement at their son, Minho moving to finally get started on the food since Yu was no longer criticising his every movement, Seungmin staying seated, both of them knowing he was a horror in the kitchen, as he settled in to watch him work. Definitely not ogle his arms as he chopped vegetables.

It was as he was plating the food that Yu suddenly came rushing into the kitchen, Geon nowhere to be found.

"Papa! Appa!"

Seungmin startled, sitting up as Minho immediately put down whatever he had in his hands, "what? What is it? Is everything okay?"

Yu gasped for breath, "Geonie just asked me to be his boyfriend."

There was silence as Seungmin and Minho tried to process the information Yu had just given them, before the kitchen exploded into sound.

"Oh my god–"

"Wow, finally–"

"What did you say to him in response?"

"You better had said yes, young man, I swear, I see the way you look at him–"

"Wait a second, did you just leave him in your room on his own?"

Yu looked flushed and a little overwhelmed, but most of all he looked so happy, a big smile on his face as he looked at them, "I said yes," he took a deep breath, tears seeming to well in his eyes, "I have a boyfriend. Geonie is my boyfriend."

Both Minho and Seungmin quickly moved to envelop him in a big hug.

"Don't cry, aegi," Minho whispered softly into their son's hair, "can you imagine how embarrassing it would be to go back to your Geonie in your room with your face splotchy from tears?"

That got a chuckle out of them, before Seungmin was whispering, "oh no, too late."

Minho was about to ask what he was talking about when a little face peeked around the doorway, "…Yu?"

Yu sniffed, rubbing his eyes with his hands before pulling away from his both his fathers, "yeah, Geonie?"

"'You okay?"

Yu smiled, wide, "yeah… Yeah, I'm so happy, actually." He huffed a laugh, a stray tear falling down his face.

Minho smiled at them both, "why don't you both get situated in front of a movie or something and we'll bring your food over to you, yeah?"

They both nodded, Geon more shyly than Yu, before they were dragging each other, giggling over to the living room.

Seungmin watched them go fondly, before he slid behind Minho, wrapping his arms around his waist, "they're cute, aren't they?"

"Too cute. Its gross actually."

Seungmin smiled into Minho's neck, "they remind me of us, a little."

Minho huffed out a laugh, "yeah?"

"Yeah."

And to be fair, Minho could see it too.
