Work Text:
In front of Juni stood a tombstone. Etched onto the stone was the name of her friend.
Juni imagined Yeondu looking just like the dead she often saw in movies. She would be laying on her back with her hands clasped on her stomach. Her serene face would be free from blemishes and her eyes would be closed as if she were sleeping.
But Juni knew the truth. She knew that Yeondu's body had been damaged beyond recognition. There was barely a body to bury or incinerate, there almost never was in the Aberrant Corps.
"That uniform… are you a friend of Yeondu? Are you also here to visit her?"
Juni whipped her head around and instinctively wiped her face. A middle aged woman with a bouquet in her hands stood halfway up the incline in front of her. The sunset sky bathed her in a harsh shadow and her face was plastered with signs of aging, but Juni recognized Yeondu's eyes in them. A family member, most likely her mom.
Juni froze, it was like Yeondu had returned from the dead. Well not really. No, this was a Yeondu who was never forced into the Aberrant Corps. A Yeondu who never died and grew up.
"Ah no um… I think… I think I got the wrong person haha…" Juni finally stammered as she unconsciously picked at her fingernails, and then quickly whispered. "I'm sorry, I'll just leave."
Juni barely looked at the woman as she hastily walked away—but she could feel Yeondu's eyes burning into her back. She didn't want to look back, less she accidentally made eye contact. She could just imagine it—the woman peering at Juni with scrutiny and disdain as she thought; Why couldn't it be her? It was the same question Juni asked herself every night.
It was night by the time Juni stopped walking. It was only until she got back to HQ that she tried to calm her beating guilt ridden heart. She didn't visit Yeondu again after that day.
