Will looks at the people on the table—Mrs. Wheeler with her camera and perfect white smile, Lucas and Dustin beaming at him with excitement, Jonathan and his mommy at his sides like a warm reminder that they would always be there, and finally over to Mike, standing in front of him over the cake, smiling and looking at him with shining brown eyes.
“I wish to always be with the people that I love, with my family.”
Will closes his eyes and blows the candle.
Will doesn’t have a memory of a bad birthday, because as far as he can remember, Mike was always at his side.

He liked people more than he liked places; he always had, and right now, he was in one of his favorite places with his favorite person in the world.
He swallowed with some difficulty, shifting on his spread knees a bit in a way that made them splay open even further, the stretch of his thighs making him groan, eyes fluttering. There was a hand in his hair, just resting there, occasionally scratching gently at his scalp, ruffling his curls.
