They’re spectacles to the world. Ryūji knows it, and he hates it. They’re either something that disgust the vile people they’re surrounded by, or they’re something to watch as if those people have a right. Something to gawk at like a show.
So he keeps himself to a few looks, occasional smiles, and the rare touch. He puts on his clothes— his leathers, his spikes, his earrings, his guns, all of it an armor against the world — and he doesn’t show how much he always wants. He doesn’t show how much his entire body burns for Rin. He doesn’t show that he’s desperately in love, and that Rin can have anything in the world from him.
They save it all for private moments. Occasionally when there are a few trusted friends, but mostly, it’s just for solitude.
In the quiet of their room, they can do anything. Be anything.

Summary
The road to hell is paved with good intentions.
The battle doesn't end when the portal is destroyed, instead it just gives rise to a new one. Satan may have left many injured and dead, but it's the aftermath that has the greatest consequences. The Grigori are all too eager to have a pair of scapegoats for their mistakes that led to the incident but the Cram School students are not about to let that happen. Of course, nothing is easy when you're running, especially when it's not just from a physical threat.
So what happens when you do stop running?
