He stood at the front door, ready to knock on the house whose address he had checked and double-checked hundreds of times. He knew the names of the people who lived there, Sodapop and Darrel Curtis, even though there was no chance that they knew him. At least not on sight. He couldn’t blame them either, he was still getting used to his own name.
Ponyboy.
Even the thought of the name felt foreign to him. He couldn’t imagine what it would be like to say that name out loud or to respond to it but he would learn soon. Because, once that door opened, he would finally have a name. He would no longer be Twelve, the experiment with his number tattooed on his wrist, he would become Ponyboy Curtis.

"'You seem to want that 𝙟𝙪𝙨𝙩 𝙛𝙞𝙣𝙚!' Pony's hand came harder down onto the tomatoes, furiously cutting in choppy, frustrated squares. 'Feels like all I ever do is 𝙘𝙖𝙪𝙨𝙚 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙗𝙡𝙚𝙢𝙨! 𝙏𝙝𝙖𝙩'𝙨 𝙖𝙡𝙡 𝙄 𝙙𝙤! 𝘼𝙡𝙡 𝙄 𝙙𝙤 𝙞𝙨—'
A hot pain stabbed through his finger. With a sharp yelp, Pony scrambled, the knife flying out of his hand and clattering against the table with a clash. The tomato fell off the cutting board. He ripped his hand away and held it tightly against his chest. 'Damn it, 𝙤𝙬—'
With a gasp of pain, he looked at his hand. At first, it didn't bleed. But Pony saw the large gash in his finger that was deep, deep, deep from the knife.
In a split second, blood bloomed into the cut, bled over his skin, and ran down his hand in thick, red drops."
Or: Darry and Pony get into a fight as they make dinner together. Pony (like a dunce) accidentally cuts his finger. Darry, obviously, is worried sick.
