Oh Aurora this is some grade A whump my dear. I am such a sucker for plans and procedures. I think it does so much to building the world you’re working in. This set of lines is killer: “Dick didn’t like falling./ Or he did./ But not like this./ Not when it felt like dying.” GIRL! You’ve go so much emotion wrapped up into this – the fact that the boy likes the fall – but only when he can control it – and he cannot right now – it’s just… it smacks.
While Dick’s section hurts – I think Bruce’s hurts even more. You do such an amazing job of detailing how his thoughts are changing and turning – and how he’s losing his cool nature. I always love it when you bring Clark in too. My heart sunk with the like “At the cowl his boy had never wanted to wear.” – Because yes. Always that – Dick doesn’t want to be Batman… so to be hurt as Batman makes it almost worse.
SERIOUSLY – the personification of consciousness was fucking brilliant. And the idea that no matter what – Dick would still be a hero, it feels so good and right and correct as characterization.
I love the dueling perspectives – and I love how much more you can tell by doing that. This was another wonderful bit of whump with such a soft ending! Thank you for sharing!
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am so glad to hear that! (and sorry for the late replay - this comment was open on my dash for two days now but I just couldn't get down to answer it) I did my best - and I knew from the get-go that it wouldn't be a 1k prompt, but I also didn't count on this universe and this fic becoming this big. Dick Grayson is one giant tradegy folded into another - he still loves fly like nothing else in the world and at the same time there is nothing he fears more.
Dick is a sad noodle boy who is very confused (and who was written by a very sleep deprived me) it was harder to make it really gut-punchy---- Bruce fearing for his kids lives however? Yeah, well that is the good kush. I made Bruce a rather good dad in this, but even this Bruce knows that Dick still can't give up the Cowl - not yet - so instead he is just even more guilt ridden then usual when it comes to injury and pain!
Integral part of any Dick characterization: Dick always gets back up - figurative and literally!
Thank you soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much for your wonderful and heartfelt comment! <3<3<3<3<3<3
