Oooh, thanks for this comment! Yes, I really wanted to imagine the jewel as sentient (because in Final Act, it clearly is), and I definitely imagine it being, if not malevolent, definitely self-serving, and Kagome is definitely a means to an end for it. Thanks for reading this!!
