She didn’t take the hint and instead leaned forward into his space and said in a low voice, “If you kiss me right now, I will be in your debt and I would really, really appreciate it.”
His drink stopped halfway to his mouth and he looked at her askance. “Are you serious?”
“As a heart attack.”

“I look mad because I am mad,” he said amiably and with a smile so that he didn’t frighten her. But he didn’t need to worry about that because she just smiled up at him, showing off a missing tooth.
“My daddy makes me count to ten when I’m mad,” she said with a deep sigh that told him it was probably a frequent occurrence for her.
