Summary
Tav and a company of unlikely misfits seek a cure for their Illithid parasites. Well, most of them. Astarion isn't so willing to let these little tadpoles get away, particularly when that would mean returning to a life in the shadows and beneath his master's thumb. He needs an ally who favors him above everyone else for when push comes to shove. Tav is too trusting. Astarion hatches a plan.

Astarion knew the potency of lust. He knew there was no greater shroud for judgements made against self preservation than the heat between one’s legs. But he also knew the shroud did not last forever, daylight and time always exposed the enchantment for what it was eventually. And once he’d lain with her, gave her all that his body and rakish charm offered, the enchantment would begin to unravel. It was the promise he had learned: the wanting and being wanted that held all the power. It was easier to convince someone they wanted what they didn’t have rather than to convince them to continue to desire that which had been already given.

Tav and Co enter the Shadow Cursed Lands. It is worse than Halsin had warned them. Tav doesn't want to talk about it.

And so, with the chain of love, Astarion held her. She was a bit like a dog, her loyalty easy to earn and hard to lose. But he was not to be a cruel master like the one he’d known. He would let her love him, and use all his knowledge and experience to play the part of her prince for as long as required. It didn’t matter, really, in the end.
