(9. Soothe / soothing, 1,030 words)
--“I told you to put sunscreen on.”
Ilya turns to look at Shane over his shoulder. His very burnt shoulder. He crinkles his nose, which almost makes Shane smile. Almost. “I did. You would know, you were there.”

Summary
(14. Radiant / radiance - 1,242 words)
--
Shane had never given it much thought, becoming a parent. Not that he didn’t want to be one, it’s just…it was more like it was always somehow included in a future plan, even though that plan had morphed over the years. He thinks about how, at one point in his life, he thought his future was something that was supposed to be typical, that it had a specific definition of normalcy that was just right at his fingertips but always out of reach—a suburban home with a wife and two kids and a hockey career.

---
“How are your ribs? I can’t believe you played with those bruised ribs.”
Ilya remembers letting out a breath of a laugh at that, mostly air leaving his nose because, “Whoa, you can’t?” because when was the last time either of them thought twice about sacrificing little pieces of themselves for a job they gave everything to?

Summary
(18. Constellation(s), 736 words)
---
Shane likes to think of himself as someone who follows true to whatever plan is constructed from the ground up. That’s why his mother as his agent works as great as it does—she comes up with the plan, he enacts it, he breathes life into it, he checkmarks whatever is put in front of him and he does it incredibly well. He’s built an entire existence like this; breaking things into parts, figuring them out.

Summary
(22. Fall - 1,217 words )
--Shane smiles just a little as Ilya stands there at the edge of the lake, arms crossed over his bare chest, staring at what he’s brought out from storage like they’re about to sprout legs and walk into the water.
“So we stand on them? Like surfboard.”
“Or you can kneel.”
Ilya’s eyes lift to him, a smirk pulling the corners of his mouth, and Shane already knows what he’s going to say before, “I know you know how to do that—maybe you can teach me.”
Shane rolls his eyes but a soft laugh bubbles up and out of his chest as Ilya reaches for him, tugging him closer by wrapping his hands along his waist. “Stop.”
Ilya presses his nose directly into Shane’s cheek, “No.”

Summary
(23. Dip - 1,321 words)
---
There’s a dip on Ilya’s body that Shane is obsessed with—it’s on his arm, right on the inside of his right elbow. He loves the bow of his cupid lips, or the back of his shoulder, or planting kisses somewhere in his curls, but there’s just something so tender about the inside of his elbow. There’s a mole that Shane always brushes with his nose when he goes to kiss him there. Ilya’s slightly ticklish, which Shane didn’t really know until he started paying attention to this area; a small breath of a laugh leaving his nose or the quiet squirming of his hips; it draws butterflies behind Shane’s ribs every time.Series

--“You need to change your voicemail.”
Ilya blinks at him, half way out of the shower, dripping wet. He’s got a towel partly around his body, his curls are full and bouncy and barely dried, and he’s staring at Shane like he’s grown a third head.
“What?”

Summary
(30. Meant to be - 1,347 words, NC-17)
Shane has always had a thing for Ilya’s lips, possibly since the first moment he met him. How can he not? There’s the cupid bow, of course, but it’s not just that—his skin is soft and inviting and Ilya knows how to kiss. He remembers the very first time like it happened yesterday; Ilya’s hand on his chin, fingers stroking under his jaw, the way his tongue slipped between his teeth to roll against his own. Ingrained in his memory.

Summary
(4. Smile, 1,371 words)
Sometimes, Shane knows that he’s not the best at reading social cues or the in-between of lines for what someone says versus what they might mean. He comes by it honestly; tries to figure his way through it like anyone else might. He knows that by having a mask of his own that he wears for certain occasions, that others do the exact same thing. Everyone has their layers, their insecurities, the things that make them tick. Shane doesn’t often show people who he really is, for a variety of reasons, it’s just easier to allow others to see who they want to see. Ilya, he learns, does this so seamlessly that it’s difficult to figure out where one mask begins and where another ends, where his skin really is.

Summary
(9. Cliche, 714 words)
--Ever since Ilya’s been little, he feels like he’s lived his life in a series of misunderstandings, quiet and submission. He remembers moments with his mother before she died that never felt like that, that were warm and consistent and soft. He was allowed to make mistakes, to let his guard down, to not swallow down unwarranted feedback like glass in his mouth. He’s been a part of this reality for so long that he thinks it’s the only one he’ll ever know—and he’s been okay with that.

Summary
(12. Award, 1,774 words)
---Ilya thinks, at this point, he should know when to push buttons and when not to. But sometimes he can’t help it. It’s a bit of a kneejerk reaction, to piss someone else off when he’s not feeling his best. His team has been bothering him lately with their losing streak and…of course he loves winning, at being the best, and he can’t quite figure out what they need to do to turn that story around. It’s the combination of people, sure, but it’s also just morale. Which is so fucking low it doesn’t feel like something he can pick up with his hands, at least not alone or all at once. It gives him a headache that sits right behind his eyes.
And then, combined with that, he misses Shane.

Summary
(20. Golden - 1,057 words)
--Shane understands that this is all part of it; this perfectly well-orchestrated plan that they came up with two years ago at the cottage. On good days, the distance between him and Ilya is minimal, mostly because Ilya is only two hours away and the drive is so quick and easy at this point that it’s practically become ingrained in his being. He could do it with his eyes closed, and it’s certainly a lot closer than Russia. But on bad days, when they’re both traveling, or worse when one is home and the other is not, Shane feels that separation like a physical ache.

(22. Watch, 1,375 words, NC-17)
--
Ilya presses himself against the back of Shane’s body, lining them up perfectly as they wait to grab the bartender’s attention. It’s last call, both of them are a little buzzed and Ilya’s past the point of keeping his hands to himself. Not that he was doing much on that front earlier, either, but he knows that Shane prefers a little less PDA in public. Which is usually just fine with him—how they act around eachother is something that is wholeheartedly theirs. They’re so used to being in the public eye that it’s thrilling to keep to themselves. There’s handholding and cheek kisses and brushes of hands along a back or neck or shoulder, but nothing like this.Series

Summary
(23. Surround(ed), 1,134 words)
--Ilya isn’t going to pretend he isn’t tense the first few times he spends around Shane’s parents. He tries very hard to keep his shoulders loose, an easy smile on his face, allowing Shane to lead conversations and respond only when he’s brought into the conversation. His back is like a rod straight down his spine; he knows this. Because at one point Shane guides his hand down while rubbing circles, pressing on certain muscles until he relaxes. Ilya’s gaze finds his boyfriend’s and Shane’s soft smile conveys a silent message—it’s okay.

Summary
(24. Asleep - 1,172 words)
--Shane never thought he would be this person.
When Hayden told him once while sharing a hotel room that sometimes he had trouble sleeping in strange places because he missed Jackie, Shane had just smiled at him in that sort of whimsical way where he thought it’d never apply to him. He gets it, down to its most technical parts, that it’s about not being in your own house with surroundings and routines that you recognize. It’s jarring to always spend time in airports, travel buses, airplanes, random hotels in cities you do not call home. But it’s been so ingrained in him at a young age that he kind of just…does it automatically. Like breathing.

Summary
(26. Emotion(al), 1,548 words)
--Shane has seen many different versions of Ilya over the years—parts of him that stick together to build an overall picture. A piece of stained glass, a mosaic; bright colors and shapes refracting off of one another to tell a story. There are feelings that are more nuanced, that live directly under his skin, but Ilya, if anything, lives his life loudly. It bleeds into everything he does.

Summary
(27. Silence, 996 words)
Ilya has never been someone to seek silence out. He’s got enough going on inside his head that being in a quiet place just makes those voices that never sound like himself that much louder. Voices that mimic his father’s disappointment, his brother’s disgust, that echo a version of himself which is ugly and hated and self-distructive, telling him that he doesn’t deserve anything good. Silences also remind him of words that his mother never said, comfort that feels weak, promises that are never kept.
He enjoys hockey rinks and games and clubs and not being alone, places in which he can’t hear himself think, where the running commentary can’t slither through the rest of his body like ivy; grip hold.
It’s not until he meets Shane Hollander does he learn that silences can be kind.

Summary
(28. Clap, 1,319 words)
--
Ilya is not usually someone that backs down from a well-placed chirp. Words at the ready live behind his teeth; it’s all part of a perfectly constructed barrier he’s built for himself over the years. But he also knows that it’s pointless to allow others to get under his skin, especially since there are better ways of spending his time; like getting underneath theirs. His chirps never wander into something personal; why do that when he’s got plenty of things to comment on that has everything to do with the sport they share? There’s a reason that he’s one of the best players in the league, and Ilya knows it. He doesn’t shy away from letting others know it too. Just because he’s on Ottawa’s team now doesn’t change that.Series
